    I am 44 years old. I just watched The Legend of Billie Jean for the first time in its entirety today. I had seen some bits and pieces in the past but didn't think it was really my "thing", or was just like a chick flick or something. I was blown away!!! I thought it was amazing to the point I find myself here watching this video at 1am on a Saturday night. I feel like it was super 80s, but at the same time had a lot of modern components like going "viral" overnight in this internet age which obviously didn't exist in 1985. I'll probably watch it all over again within the next few days. I got chills when she takes her wig off at the end and the people in the background start to recognize her.

      Wow that’s fascinating to hear that you just saw the movie in its entirety at 44. Im 45 and I remember watching this on HBO back in 85 after it went from theaters to cable. Im glad you enjoyed the video and its amazing to know that it was her 1st time returning to Corpus Christi since the movie wrapped filming.

    My sister was an extra in the movie in many different scenes. One thing most people don't know is that this movie was filmed in one of the coldest winters Corpus ever had. People would go around spraying water on the actors to make it look like they were sweating. Peter Coyote was especially nice to the extras. When we all went down town to audition for parts, I was asked if I would mind cutting my hair off. I said no and I had no idea why they asked me that at the time. We lived right down the street from the Dock Side Store. It was a lot of fun.

    • @joel49er
      @joel49er  3 года назад +4

      Wow, that’s a pretty amazing story. How old were you and your sister in 1984 if you don’t mind me asking? I was 7 years old in 1984 and I’m from Robstown so Sunrise Mall was my favorite mall back in the 80s. My father took us too Magic Isles about 3-4 times , there’s a shot of the carnival in the film. Was the Dock Side Store in the Flour Bluff area and if so , is that building still there? I think it isn’t. Corpus Christi really embraces this film because it was entirely shot there. But the sad thing is that the turn out was pathetic for Billie Jeans return to Corpus Christi after 30 plus years. I was disappointed. But thanks for sharing your story about being extras. The movie is a cult classic.

    • @residualaftermath

      @@joel49er Hi Joel, I will just say that I was born before you haha. I went to Magic Isles many times too back before they closed it down. Yes, the Dock SIde was in Flour Bluff. I lived down the road on Claride Street heading towards the Naval Air Station plus many other places in Corpus. I am not sure if the Dock SIde is sill there. I moved away from there in the 1990's. Yes the movie is a cult classic nowadays. My sister attended one of the gatherings in Austin shortly before she passed away from cancer. Everyone treated her so good and yelled her name when her parts would show up in the movie. I am so proud of her. It was hard work being an extra in the movie. She said that Peter Coyote would sit with her and others and bum cigarettes off of them. She told him they were generic and he didn't care. He was very nice to everyone. She said Helen Slater was not too nice to anyone and had a ritual she did before each scene which was to bend over and shake her hair all around. I can understand her being focused on the film and not wanting to talk to too many people I guess. The old mini golf course they showed use to be over on North Beach I believe. My sister knew so much more than I did about it. Thanks for your reply. I am glad to remember all of these things.

      @@residualaftermath thanks for sharing some great memories. I’m sure Helen was very focused since she did graduate from a high school that was a performing arts high school or something like that. Yes, that abandoned golf course was on North Beach in the area where the Texas State Aquarium is now. I’m sure it was a fun time during the filming at Padre Island or around town. Were you guys at Sunrise Mall during the shooting there? Have you ever seen Dead Mall Series - Sun Rise Mall before hers on RUclips? If you haven’t , you should. It will take you down memory lane. In which scenes was your sister in? I’m sorry to hear about the passing of your sister. I met Helen at Comic Con and she was so nice beautiful as well. She was an 80s babe.

      @@joel49er Hi, I will watch the movie again when I can and write down the times you can see her. I know she is at Dock Side when Mr. Pyatt first starts selling Billie Jean items, she walks past the table and is only in that spot for a second. Then she is in the scene where there are two trucks with people heading out to the beach party near the ending. She is in the back of the truck on the left side with her legs hanging out and she is swinging a beer can they gave her. They told them to act like they were partying. Then she is in the ending twice standing next to Keith Gordon and Dean Stockwell watching Billie Jean's encounter with Mr. Pyatt. Another thing she told me is that right after Binx got shot, a lot of people were chasing the ambulance along with Billie Jean and that they re shot that scene so many times that it got dark and was real cold but Helen Slater was so professional about it all. I was not at the mall and am not sure if my sister was during that scene. Yes I did see that dead mall show about Sunrise Mall on you tube not long ago, very nice but I was sad to see the mall was no more.

    • @joel49er
      @joel49er  3 года назад +2

      @@residualaftermath The mall is still there and they want to do something with it. The one that was Padre Staples Mall is now called La Palmera Mall and they fixed that mall up that almost every space there is occupied. They just need to do the same thing with Sunrise mall. It has the movie history. I believe I heard some company bought it and is planning a big revival for Sunrise mall. I believe the escalators with the fountains will stay just because of the movie. One day send the times on the movie so I can see your sister. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks so much for posting this, JC. I was an extra in the film back in the day--in the night scene where Putter and Ophelia see BJ's pic on a storefront TV. Was so lucky to be in town when Helen Slater visited. I paid admission to the Comic Con just to get her autographed photo. I'm not sure if you were the liaison sitting next to her. She was very gracious in her conversation with me, even asking about my line of work. Very down-to-earth person. Being part of the film, for me, was a coming-of-age moment, not unlike the one the film itself depicts--festooned with '80s magic!

    The scene on Padre Island that day it was super cold out. I was one of the paid extras that made it to a few different shoots while they were in the city. Everyone was in shorts and tees at the beach and it was in the 50s...,windy and cold.
    Helen Slater drove up in her rental, a new 1984 Red Jeep Cherokee 2 door. That car was the first of the small SUVs released. She actually drove to the two screen movie theater called "THE MOVIES THEATER" and bought a movie ticket from me to see her newly released Supergirl movie.

    • @joel49er
      @joel49er  Год назад

      Wow , she did mention in her Q & A that she had a rental and drove down SPID which felt to her like wide open spaces. She bought a movie ticket from you to the theater to watch Supergirl? Tell me a little more about that, was she by herself , did you recognize her, what happened?

      @@joel49er I believe it was middle of the the week. I recognized her immediately because I had been on a few shoots for the movie as an paid extra in scenes that unfortunately didn’t make the Final Cut.
      Anyhow, In the theater I worked (“The Movies Theater”) I was the ticket sales person since there were only 2 theaters . She drove up and I noticed the brand new red 2 door Jeep Cherokee SUV…it was a new model just released and a first ever of the small SUVs. This is what I initially caught my eye. I was surprised Helen got out of the vehicle. I watched thru a type of drive thru window at my ticket counter , she exited the car and I was amazed she came to see her own movie Supergirl. It was during the day and at a time only a handful of people were in the movie. She paid me I said hello and she went to the other counter for food to take in the theater.
      Out of the 3 locations I visited as a paid extra, I only saw her once at the location. She had a body double person that was in the beach scenes which was a long day and cold shoot. It’s my two minute story.
      The theater was not directly off of SPID, it was about a mile off that main highway. It’s been a long time since I lived in corpus, but if you know the landmark that was a 1950s concrete Corvette, we were right across the street.
      During the late summer of 1985, I moved to Austin to attend the university of Texas. It was my first year and I just graduated from high school in May 1985. I believe the movie was released in 1985 or 1986, because I watched it at a movie theater in Austin. I saw a lot of my friends in the final film and they actually had one or two line speaking parts . The other female high school friends that were paid extras were in the scenes where they cut their hair off like Helen did in the movie to help disguise herself and confuse the police. I believe they paid them around $600 per person to shave their hair off.

      Must have been an exciting time for those who were in the film. It’s become a cult classic. Sad thing was in the Q & A session the turn out was embarrassing meaning that there was hardly any people in the audience. I was disappointed because of that. I expected a bigger crowd than what turned out since Slater hadn’t come to Corpus Christi since the movie wrapped up shooting. But Corpus always loves to claim the movie was shot there. It’s nice to see the 80s through this movie and how it was during the mall years especially Sun Rise Mall. I wish that mall would have the same type of come back as La Palmera Mall and the Billie Jean escalators preserved. But glad you enjoyed and thanks for sharing your memory.

    One more thing. The mall that the Legend of Billie Jean was filmed in was the Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christie Texas. Dan bell did one of his dead mall videos on the Sunrise Mall before it closed. It would have been great if he could have gotten Helen Slater to go with him on that. The Sunrise Mall still exists but is abandoned and the City of Corpus Christi has issued citations to the property owner for abandoning it and ignoring code. It is really quite sad. It would have been great if the mall was still open and they did this show in it. Very depressing what’s happened to our malls in this country. When they shut down it almost feels like it’s stealing our memories. You can’t even go into the Sunrise mall anymore and see where the movie was filmed. At least Dan Bell did a dead mall video on it before it closed for good.

      @@galvestonduck Back in 2018, they did do a thing at Sunrise Mall called “ Walk Around The Mall Like If It Was The 80s”, and of course the Billie Jean thing was highlighted. I live 25 minutes away from Corpus and I work in Corpus but I never hear of anything Billie Jean things happen. He did mention that a some years ago they had someone win a scooter and they showed the movie and Barry Tubb was there. I personally don’t remember that event. Could’ve been before social media. I know the guy that does the Corpus Christi Comic Cons wanted to have Helen Slater do like a reenact the scene and take pictures at the Sunrise Mall escalator but the mall owners denied it because of a mole issue. I know Helen visited the mall when she came back to Corpus Christi and it was her first time back since shooting the movie so it was a long time coming. Sadly, they just began tearing down Sunrise Mall so the escalator is which is a piece of movie history is getting torn down with the mall. It’s sad to see. I had wished that the mall which did thrive the one next to Sunrise , La Palmera would have purchased or the Sunrise owners would have donated the the fountain where the escalator was to the other mall and they could’ve have displayed it on their main escalator. It would’ve been a tourist attraction where people who are fans of the cult classic movie could come and take pictures. Sadly by right now it’s gone forever. I’m glad you enjoyed Billie Jean Helen Slater coming back to Corpus Christi.

      40 years already. I can’t believe it’s been that long. Seems just like yesterday to me even though I was 7 years old at the time. Thanks for watching. Yes C-101 is a real station. It’s still going. C-101 used to be my favorite station back in the late 80s-90s and 2000s before Sirius XM and Apple Music. Haven’t heard it in a while but it’s still a popular station. The only thing that pisses me off is that it looks like they’re not going to be able to save the Sunrise mall. They’ve talked about doing something with it but nothing has ever come to fruition. Especially the escalator with the fountain is still there. It’s not open to the public anymore which is a sad thing then with the 40 year anniversary this year if I’m correct. I think it came out in 1984. But the Sunrise Mall where the movie was filmed was the newer mall back then than a mall across the street from that was called Padre Staples Mall which us called now La Palmera mall. Some buyers bought La Palmera and they transformed it into a beautiful mall and left Sunrise mall out to dry.
