A true survivor! The rust in the middle of the doors is due to water getting behind the sticky (maybe not so much now) anti drum pad stuck on the inside. Not an easy fix so I guess it's best to leave it. Perhaps some anti rust wax spray inside the doors would be a good idea. I had a first year Ford Escort (UK) with the same problem.
I would want to find front and rear seats which would fit this car. Id also fix the door panel. Sure, the car has gone to the moon and back. But the interior doesn't need to look as it does.
every day i cross paths with a couple of them. still slugging along, smoking just like its the 80's. The diesel versions have survived, but the gasoline ones have mostly all gone to the scrapper.
Yup, my late friend Frank Van Agen had a green '79, he traded it in at a VW dealer on an ugly blue late '80s model. It had 426,000 miles on it and it still ran perfect. Frank and his brother Vic owned Van Agen sod farms in Bancroft, Michigan and Frank lived in Roseville. He drove the roughly 80 miles back and forth every day- accounting for the high miles. One day Frank and I were having lunch and he told me how he was out delivering sod and seen his old car parked across the street at an engineering firm, so he took a walk over and asked to speak to the owner. The new owner was bragging to Frank saying how he can not believe how good the car operates having over 126,000 miles ! Yup, the VW dealer apparently represented the car as having only 126K. Frank never said a word.
I had a 1979 VW Diesel Rabbit. It actually averaged 52 mpg, city and highway, when diesel was eve cheaper than gas. These cars weren't available with factory A/C - which I why I traded it in for a GTI when they came to market.
Would like to see the x4dr version.. tried to start the twin engine lawnmower and bad carburetor but with the intake off and squirted gas , it seemed to fire
Marc, i bet there is some kind of sponge in those doors where they rust out. In Germany these were gone by the early 2000s but some much earlier due to salt. Why not repair the rust? Engine will outlive the body. Btw how would you fix hanging doors? Cheers to you, keep it up
I love that old diesel rabbit. Really shows how insane the habit of changing your car every two years really is.
Most people don’t do that, though.

The yellow Rabbit is back! That car must run forever...humanity's existence depends on it...
I knew those were good engines...but I've never heard of one at over 600,000 miles.
OMG...I had one JUST LIKE THAT 40+ years ago. Same color, 2 door, etc. Love that gauge pack under the radio.
"seat is a little worn"
That car will probably outlive humankind. Keep changing the oil, and they are immortal.
I had one just like in college, same color. Had the Jimmy Carter four on the floor. Routinely got 50+ mpg with it. Absolutely fantastic design.
Fantastic, cheap set of stretch seat covers would help.
Just like the "Eveready Bunny it keeps going, and going, and going"....
You should make a Playlist of just this car😊
Hey that's not a bad idea

Love the license plate , probably pretty close to 711 miles per gallon too or maybe just per tankful! lol 😎
One of the best cars ever made
Just about to watch this video looks nice thanks for uploading

What a great story !
This thing has a million kilometers!?
That's amazing.
Heck that Rabbit is now getting broke in!!!!!!
Love it. with regular service that engine will keeeeeep going. The rest of the car might not go the same distance
Had one in the 80's. 57 mpg on daily commute.
That car is a Portland classic. Portland is where I see the most of old colorful cars (especially Toyotas, vw and Volvo) great to see
We had three of them. Excellent cars- each 250 k miles and sold.
"rolled over 6 times"...yea, right.
Parts Place Inc in Michigan may have body panels for those ole Rabbitts and Sciroccos' etc
When you could say a VW for life !

Sorry, if you really baby it you can get 52 hwy but no where close to that in town. I've owned several of those for many years.
When you first got into the car and panned the camera over the dash, I could SMELL that funky odor.
😁
Every VW of that era had that same leathery sort of smell- I do miss it !
The owner needs to take action now to rectify the rust problem’s, before it’s too late !
It may already be to late...

Hey Stella 🐶
I drove a VW diesel for 8 years. Noisy and slow, but would always start, even at - 10 degrees.
Until the owner dies. the second owner doesnt give a shit and scraps the car after minor inconvenience
I love that thing, what kind of oil does he run?
Delo 400
@@2stroketurbotranslate to English/// delo 400/// job 400..

Should be named “Pigpen”
take care of the surface rust areas, fix the interior and keep driving it
Where is your shop at sir?
Owner is “religious” about keeping up regular maintenance. The car has made it over 600,000 miles and is going strong. Not a coincidence.
I had a 1979 Rab Diesel, 2 piston rings broke so it smoked like a Banshee and ran away once
My friend had one. It kept blowing head gaskets. Does this one have that problem?
No, second or third cylinder head though
Alloy head on an iron block. They have always cracked easy. The gaskets go out from a warped head or not keeping the head bolt tight to specs.
Back when volkswagen made decent cars...
I had a rabbit diesel and ran the wheels off of it
Till the owner pops his clogs 🤐
Yup.
normaals goljaars xd
What no AC? never mind just scrap it already
