Gatti: The Three Concertos (First Recordings)

  • Composer: Luigi Gatti
Artists: Orchestra dei Ducati, Fausto Pedretti (conductor), Orchestra del Conservatorio di Mantova, Luca Bertazzi (conductor)
Not the conductor Daniele Gatti (though he has been known to compose), or indeed the great Gatti-Casazza, moonlighting from his wheeling and dealing around La Scala: but Luigi Gatti, 1740-1817: a long-lived, prolific, almost completely unknown Classical figure whose name is largely remembered, if at all, for its tangential appearance in Mozart’s life and letters. Leopold and Wolfgang first bumped into Gatti in Mantua, in 1770, by which time he was already a respected Abbé, ordained and in charge of music and musicians. But it was when Gatti snared the post of Kapellmeister at Salzbug Cathedral that he crossed the family; for Leopold had coveted the job for himself, and indeed had no mean claim to it, but the city’s Prince Archbishop would not hear of it, and indeed demonstrated his distaste for the Mozart family in perpetuity by relieving Wolfgang of his responsibilities as a court and church composer - and the much-needed salary that went with them - with (according to the family correspondence) ‘a kick up the arse’.
So, Gatti: Here are three delightful Classical concertos, in period-instrument performances, made live in Mantua and Milan. The scores have been dusted off and freshly edited, and reveal a musical voice not circumscribed by time or place: he adjusted to the new, more complex, post-Classical style led by Hummel in the decades after Mozart’s death, as the Piano Concerto shows.

      Mr Gatti's music is charming!
Thanks a lot for posting. 👍
I love discovering little known musicians!
The Hummel in the description is Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778 - 1837), isn't he?

Well it’s about time somebody re-discover’d Gatti’s music - after all he was the long-sought after Kapellmeister of Salzburg after Mozart’s unceremonious firing by the Archbishop in April 1781 when the court was visiting Vienna - his music is fluent, intelligent & full of charm - everything that Archbooby Colloredo could possibly ask for in a Kappelmeister -and more than anything else, he gave nobody any trouble and quietly did what he was told - and it would be unfair to Gatti to compare his musical work with the brightest (tho’ tragically brief) shining star at the time making his name world-renown’d from his new home of found-freedom in Vienna having ditch’d provincial Salzburg for good…

Obrigado!

Except for the Concertone in D Major, I never had the chance to listen or know the other 2 pieces. Galantissimo, cosí stesso dunque capriccioso, I would say. Pitty the recordings are ensemble rather than concert by concert, but overall, excellent. Seems here and there like TARTINI, doesn´t it? Greetings from Portugal.

These concerti need to be played but, sadly, we can expect the 200,000th rendition of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik or some other threadbare warhorse.

Do you want to be deliberately vague about the instruments that will be featured? The solo instrument in the middle concerto was not what I was expecting. Astounding is the mileage you cover both in terms of the instruments and the periods in Gatti’s career represented in this one volume. And if you don’t want me to, I won’t spoil it for the new listeners.

Go figure. Fads have made us bury every memory of highly gifted musicians like this one, while bringing fame to many inferior ones.
A minor nit to pick: noting which instruments the concertos are for (and the soloists on this recording) might be a good idea for the presentation; I for one would be grateful also for the composition / première dates (even if approximatively.)
