Unagi (うなぎ) is freshwater eel and it’s a real delicacy in Japan. There are many many restaurant dedicated to serving only unagi, and in Tokyu you have plenty of choices. Thanks to my friend David ( / the.hungry.tourist , I went to Obana Restaurant (尾花) which is a very highly rated, some say it’s the best, unagi in Tokyo.
What I like about Obana Restaurant (尾花) is that there are no reservations, so it’s first come, first serve, and it’s one of the classic Japanese food restaurants where you have to arrive early and wait in line for a chance to eat this legendary unagi. I arrived about 1 hour early, and already there were 20 people in the line in front of me. The wait was quite interesting, because as I was standing in line, a festival parade came walking right past.
The restaurant is within an old style Japanese building, with tatami floors, and you sit on the floor with a low table. They first steam the eel, and then grill it, and serve it in the lacquered box the traditional Japanese way.
I’ve had unagi before, but nothing compared to this unagi. It was absolutely exquisite, the most buttery perfectly cooked unagi I’ve ever had. Also, I liked how the sauce glaze was not overpowering like it sometimes can be, but it was light and just accented the wonderful eel.
Obana Restaurant (尾花) is not cheap, but the quality you get is mind-blowing.

A salute to Mrs.Ying Wiens- the unsung hero of this channel
S Max mrs.
S Max mrs Wiens
Thank you!
Mark Wiens Can't believe you replied!!!!
Exactly! I wanted to point this out since many videos. She is a new mom and travelling with a young child , around the world, in new countries must be really difficult. Handling an young child in home itself is difficult, let alone travelling with one. Hats off ma'am! :)
Legend says that one day mark is going to eat a food so delicious that his head will go out of the frame
He did almost during the wagyu mafia session.
Nikhil Joshi Hahaha..Lol
you know he only does that for the views. anyone can be a food credit these days. just use facial expressions and throw in a bunch of adjectives lol
Trevor Nichols Well man anyone can be anything these days, doesn't mean you will be successful, you need a passion for it. We don't watch his videos just to see him do that thingie of his, he's passionate about what he's doing hence he attract a following.
+Trevor Exactly this is how most popular youtubers work now they praise everything regardless if it tastes like trash just to get views. That is why I only sub to channels that I know are neutral and will tell you what they really think regardless of views or dislikes.
The man who went running behind you in the queue made me smile. He looked so happy. Great video as always Mark!
Here's my new hero!!
That cracked me up!!! I had to rewind a couple times 😂
I was so happy that he hot inside as well and was sitting besides mark. Like that sprint was worth it
Understandable, it's worth it lol
The running and smiling made my day. I had to rewind a few times.
Hey Mark! This is Taka from Japan. Unaju is definitely one of my most favourites, although the price of the eels in Japan has rocketed due to the recent fall of their yield.
Anyway, when it comes to eels, there are actually two different styles of preparation here in Japan. One is the Kanto style (the East Japan style). This technic is widely used in Tokyo and the surrounding areas. The other is the Kansai style (the West Japan style), which is very typical around Osaka and Kyoto.
Kanto style eels are firstly cut open from the top side of the fish, gutted and then steamed. After that, they are grilled on charcoal, brushed with the house special eel sauce.
Whereas Kansai style eels are cut open from the belly side and then go straight onto the chargrill, without the steaming process.
While you can enjoy the butteriness and the melt-in-your-mouth texture from the Kanto style, the Kansai style allows you to enjoy the meatiness and the sweet fattiness of the fish.
I personally prefer the Kansai style since I like the meaty texture of the eels cooked in that way.
I think you gotta come here again and make your own judgement.
Very informative! Thank you !
I didn't know that there are two styles! Thanks.
i would prefer kansai style too...man need some meat!!!
Damn this eel was so good his face almost touched the table.
I rate this 85° leaning out of 90°.

I'd like to thank you and Ying for sharing such a wonderful experience. I'd love to travel to Japan and try the foods out myself someday.
Love watching Mark. His diction is clear and so is the overall volume modulation that makes listening pleasurable.
When you took that first bite...that's how I get every single time!
Am I the only person that opens their mouth every time Mark takes a bit as if I am going to get some????? So jealous!
nope. While Mark is eating like a king I'm stuck with a hot dog form 7-eleven -_-
I absolutely love your joy and head-tilt of pleasure when you taste something magical! An inspiration - thank you for taking me on your journey.

As to cooking method, it differs depending on the area.
In eastern part of Japan, it's grilled, steamed and grilled again; in western part, it's not steamed.
When you eat grilled eels in western part of Japan, you can experience different texture!
lol That dude came running.

Love how he doesn't ask for subscribers and likes at the beginning of videos like most youtubers. He shows his awesome video first and then at the very end mentions it. I wish people still did this.
That is such a great food right there man! Love all your vidz!👌godbless
Wow what an expensive meal wow, what did ying think about this meal? Love all your videos my American Brother sending u awesome vibes and good energy.
Thanks Thomas, pretty expensive, but amazing quality, and far superior to any other unagi I've ever had.
Need to draw a giant circle but don't have a gigantic compass? Well, this is what you'll need:

Ultra creamy eel
That looks BEAUTIFUL, putting this on my go-to's!
Unagi is absolutely amazing!!! I would be tempted to order 2 of those boxes!
wow that was expensive.Ive only had frozen unagi which is expensive also but soooo nice, I can only imagine how great this was. Lining up for an hour in the sun would test my patience to the limit :D
Thanks Neil, this was really on another level even from any other versions I've ever had, such amazing quality and expertise in preparation, but really expensive!
I hear ya man and i would have to go for it if there (probably...if the line was short....and not too hot in the sun lol)....btw, david califa sure knows his stuff, some outstanding contributions. I've heard you mention him several times so a big thumbs up to david.
He ordered 2 large portion though. Most Japanese will tell you Nagoya's hitsumabushi taste great than the Tokyo ones and that cost me 30$ for the medium one. I only after the taste and it's heavenly. We ate at Maruya.
Yeah I guess so. I didnt take into account the actual order and only looked at the bill.
And here I am eating tuna out of a can =/
You are still eating good. Compare that with someone eating instant ramen.
@@bollyking hey, don't judge me. instant ramen with a carl buddig and mayo sandwich and i'm good to go...
That umagi was worth the wait! It looks amazing😍
you definitely made my day Mark. 👌
