    #4 reason to use retron is save on wear and tear on the original system. #5 would be bypassing the battery backup for games that are no longer working. among other things.

      That's great thinking! My mind never even went there. Lots of people worry about working batteries in games like Pokemon Red and this could absolutely help them save those files.

    I enjoy my Retron 5 Beach Edition. I use it for Japanese games with English patch also RPG to use save states. I do have original Hardware with the retrotink 5X with Retro HD cables except for the NES that only use composite. Also you can use mclassic to upscale from 720p to 1080p.

    These are some of the reasons I use a Retron 5 for playing retro cartridge based games. Granted my experience with playing them is using ny Retron 5 with a system patch that Hyperkin released a year or 2 after the Retron 5 was released and you need an SD card to be able to install the patch, so not everyone's experience with the system will be as good as mine has been.
    1. The Retron 5 is really convenient to play many different kinds of systems of games in the same machine, including handheld games which you would need console accessories for like the Super Game Boy for the Super Nintendo, or the Gameboy Player add on for the Nintendo Gamecube.
    2. You get to play games in HD clarity and being able to see the pixel art and animations in HD, which is really nice and does make a big difference when playing the game on a larger screen.
    3. You can use Save States with your games. This is probably my favorite part of playing on a Retron 5 compared to original hardware. Many older games didn't allow you to 'save anywhere' and continue from right where you left off. Many used save points like in RPGs for many years, and others allowed you to save whenever you wanted but you'd have to start at some checkpoint or hub location when you wanted to power up the game again and continue on. This can mean time spent backtracking or trying to find save points, but with save states you no longer have to worry about that.
    There are also games like many platformers or racing games where it's hard to continue from where you left off sometimes or if you need to take a break and don't want to leave the console on in pause mode.
    Save states save you plenty of time and frustration compared to playing those old games on the original hardware without them.
    4. You can use your preferred controller for any game you want. Sega Genesis controllers for example didn't have d-pads that were as good as what Nintendo controllers had, so using a Super Nintendo controller for all your retro gaming needs is quite great and works with basically all the systems you can play with on a Retron 5.
    5. You can rebind and customize the controls for the controller however you want, which a decent number of older games may not have allowed you to do in the options menu.
    6. You can take screenshots, which for some people will be a really nice feature and for others won't matter. But otherwise it may be difficult to get high quality screenshots of games that would normally operate on really old hardware.
    7. It's a legal way to play something with the video quality and quality of life changes that emulation can bring. And it allows you to take advantage of having a big physical collection of games.
    8. Can potentially allow you to play with more than 2 players for games that support it, like NBA Jam. Otherwise you'd have to buy some sort of multitap accessory or console link ups to do that.
    9. A Retron 5 allows you to play imported games without needing to mod your console. Not something many people will use, but for some it's a really nice feature.
    10. With the Power Base Converter accessory that was available for the Sega Genesis, you can play Sega Master System games on the Retron 5, and in HD clarity too which would otherwise be really difficult to accomplish. And there are some notable games that were released on the Master System, such as the first entries in the Phantasy Star and Shinobi series of games.
    11. While it doesn't work with every game, there are some homebrew cartridges that have fan translated versions of games on them that work with the Retron 5 if you have the system patch installed to provide massive improvements to how many games are compatible with the system.
    I've tested and played cartridges with fan translated versions of Front Mission, Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Live A Live, Bahamut Lagoon, and Secret of Mana 2 on it and they worked fine. Some kinds of fan translated games didn't work on it like some of the Super Nintendo Fire Emblem entries and the first game in the Star Ocean series, but all official games worked on my Retron 5 flawlessly and enough fan translated cartridges worked to be very satisfactory too.
    ---
    If there's one thing I dislike the most about the Retron 5 it's that the pin connectors on the console game cartridge slots are too tight, I don't want to have to worry about it doing any damage to the cartridges which was never a problem with the original hardware where games would always slide in without much resistance or effort needed to get them into the cartridge slot.

    • @JaysConsoleCorner
      @JaysConsoleCorner  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
      One thing I didn't mention was price. I did get mine used, and it was a few years ago. When I did, it was for around 100$ CAD, and when I tested it, I was able to bring them down to around 80$/90$ because the controller had buttons that didn't work.
      It's not a system I see very often, so I'm not entirely sure what it goes for theses days. I'm not entirely sure where you can find them brand new if that's how you would prefer to find it. But because I see them so rarely out in the wild, you'll have to just make a judgement call on the system, at whatever price you can find it at.
      If you do decide to pick one up, I hope you enjoy it!

    Man, I was so hyped for this and years later just went with a tricked out modded OG Xbox for all my retro emulation goodness. I also have a mini and an original SNES in nearly like new condition. I was more into the 16 bit consoles than the NES (that had much love too). I’m just tired of so much stuff I never get to play taking up so much space. Looks cool, but I want it simple and easy to play.

  • @adamwilson1691
    @adamwilson1691 2 года назад +9

    My biggest concern with this thing is that the pin connectors are really tight(or so I’m told). I don’t want it to ruin my games.

    • @JaysConsoleCorner
      @JaysConsoleCorner  2 года назад +5

      I have heard a good amount of people online worry about this, and it's a valid concern. I can only speak to my experience with my particular system. I would say the only slot that would even concern me is the NES slot. The Gameboy slot feels like an authentic gameboy slot, the other systems feel like good 3rd party slots. The NES is the only one that feels like there's tightness, but it never felt like it was going to do any harm. None of my games have ever shown any damage because of the system.
      That being said, this console isn't known for being overwhelmingly sturdy and consistent. It's possible I have one of the better one for the connectors, but from my experience, it isn't something that even crosses my mind when I decide to use it.
      Just be cautious if you decide to use one. Use it for a few months with your cheaper games and see if there's any damage. If not, then you're probably good to play any game you own.

    The thing with Nintendo Switch Online is that while it is a really cool service to play retro games that they offer, the disadvantage is you simply don't own them. You only rent these games for 20 dollars(In Expansion's case, 50). Unless you're willing to pay every year, you're not able to play them. In the Retron 5 on the other hand, you actually own the cartridges that you collect, so the Retron 5 has an upper value in that department in terms of owning and not worry about yearly/monthly streaming service.

      I haven't noticed any major issues with the slots. I would say the NES slot is the most stubborn, while the gameboy slot feels just feels like a regular GB/GBA slot. All the others kinda of feel like any other 3rd party console.
      The NES slot is the most difficult to take a game out, but I haven't noticed any damage to any cartridge. I also wouldn't say that it's extra difficult to remove a NES game. It's more difficult when compared to the other slots, but it's not something that has ever concerned me.

      But its crucial. I can beat tyson every time (no joke, played that so many times to actually learn beat him) mostly he wont even hit me once in the notorious first 90 seconds of the dream fight. Even if i didnt play it for yrs!
      But then, i noticed on modern lcds no matter what hardware i use ( original nes, classic mini, emu via wiiu/ switch, klonconsole of any type) i cant beat him. First i thought i grew too old ( reaction time) but this bothered me so much, until i tried all solutions. Then i found out it depends on the tv you re using.
      Idk if its just mts punch-out!! or if there are more games plaged of this issue. Maybe its not so crucial with others, so you still beat them ( and thus not even noticing)
      But with mtpo there really comes this issue at daylight.
      I think we need more on those input lag topic since its annoying.. imagine u re the mtpo god, blagging all about how you beat him, cuz ppl dont believe then you suck at it so bad ( not even knowing that its your tv cheating on you!)

      That's extremely fascinating. I just don't guarantee I'm the person for the topic. I'm really not that tech savvy to be able to test that type of stuff, or have proper equipment to test it. I have issues with my equipment and videos being 60 frames haha.
      I'm willing to bet speedrunners of the game know quite a bit about it. I know people have been making videos about input lag when it comes to the switch online N64 games, especially Ocarina of Time.
      I will keep the topic in mind though, I have a dry erase board I use for all my potential video topics and I'm definitely going to add input lag to the list. It might just have to wait until I have proper equipment and learn more about the subject.

      @@JaysConsoleCorner yes fascinating and so intriguing! Imagine, you think you lost your gaming skills!
      Cool, good idea. Sure, i m happy for anyone, who finally add to the solution of this. I m also sure, many gamers would be interested in this topic generally, not to a specific game related. Keep up your hard work with your interesting content!

    Who needs the retron 5 when you can hack the Super Nintendo classic add the entire collection of Super Nintendo NES Sega Genesis games you can even add Sega CD and 32X games as well your not stuck to just Nintendo games that’s what makes those consoles classic this console would of been perfect in the 1980’s and 90’s these games no longer are the newest back in those days the arcade ruled the world of video games I would go and buy arcade machines instead of console games

    Simple question.. no lol. Either get a mister, or a Analogue console. I HATED the retron 5. Gameplay was awful. You might as well use a raspberry pi... retron 5 just dumps the ROM

    If the retron 5 can play PS4 PS5 PS3 Xbox Xbox 360 Xbox one Xbox series X it would be worth to play on playing the trash graphics isn’t worth it 8 bit and 16 bit would make me go buy arcade machines what I used to do until the Xbox and PS2 was released
