Whitney, is the pop version that sounds so free and healthy and she basically sang it as written, with very few flourishes unlike today's singers who tend to oversing our anthem, like Mrs. Flemming - she sings it as almost as written. What a thrill, after sitting through so many tired old versions of this song. I would actually listen to it if it always sounded like that. Renee was asked by a naïve interviewer before the performance if she was nervous about hitting the high notes. She gracefully said she wasn't bothered by it. I guess she really wasn't!
Right. Those who's not interested in opera or classical singing may find her unknown. But she really is one of the biggest name of opera soprano in her time, she's quite reliable.
This was very classy. Whitney is my favorite singer and her version was one of my favorites...Rene...opera version is on point....I have added it to my favorite list...
Renee’s Kennedy Center Honors tribute sent me here! I’m not really an opera fan but I can’t believe she was the first opera singer to sing Star Spangled Banner at the Christmas Day of all Football Sundays! Brava
After some voice lessons I came back to this video. She is beyond magnificent IMHO. Of course, I have seen other videos of her singing and loved her in them too.
So The Star Spangled Banner can basically only be performed correctly by classically trained opera singers and Whitney Houston. I wish whoever is in charge of this for events would understand this.
In my opinion, this is the best performance of the National Anthem since Whitney Houston did it in 1991. Brava, Renée. You're talented beyond measure, and I feel honored that you would sing our national anthem.
Trevor Jefferson Renee's rendition of the National Anthem was wonderful! By what standard do you judge that it was, "Not received well by the crowd"?? As a Broncos fan, I think the National Anthem was the best part of that Super Bowl!!!

Well yeah this is probably what will you consider an opera version of The Anthem. Whitney Houston sings A blues version of The Anthem. Whitney's vocal dexterity goes Way Beyond this. It's also a Goosebumps hair standing on end with a tear in your eye version.
It’s frustrating to hear all these folks saying that Whitney’s version of our anthem is so much better than Renée’s. IN MY OPINION, Renée’s version is MUCH better!!! A big plus for Renée is that she is still ALIVE to sing it!!!

@Iron Phoenix I absolutely hate them too. Classical music for the win! Here's my video commentary about the superiority of classical music. ruclips.net/user/shortsmWrlt-5LQi0?feature=share
I’m a great fan of Fleming and have many of her CDs and DVDs. She sang beautifully here, but I hardly recognized the arrangement as the Star Spangled Banner. Nonetheless, she’s better than any pop or soul pretender who grunts and screams her way through the national anthem.
Ms. Fleming is a marvelous Opera singer and a terrific Jazz singer, too. This is not her song (for this listener/fan). The SSB is a bravura pop singer's fantasia (See: W. Houston), requiring a mix of youthful enthusiasm and golly-gee awe, plus a giant pair of lungs to belt it out (also see K. Clarkson). Otherwise, it lends itself well to folksy renditions (See: Dixie Chicks *gorgeous* btw) or something more precious (See: A. Nevill). Today this might work in an oddly, sincerely non-campy way with a Joan Sutherland or a sweeter, lighter voice a la Kathleen Battle. Ms. Fleming- not so much.
Very powerful, classy and dignified. The national anthem is not supposed to be sung like a pop song (Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, etc). It takes a classically trained opera soprano like Rene Fleming to sing it with clarity and succinct the original way it was meant to be. No interpretation or embellishments here. Just simplicity.
You Are No Authority about what is "supposed to" happen. Pop can still be dignified and respectful. Whitney Houston may not have been "classically" trained but I'm sure Renee Fleming knows how good THAT was.
There were So Too interpretations and embellishments here because It Is Not Written with the extra high notes, and even more relevantly it is written IN 3/4, but ever since Whitney, stadium performances tend to set it in 4/4 because THAT sounds more dignified (and is also easier for performers to hear&feel). This one VERY weirdly starts out in 4 but moves to 3 for the final chorus. When Whitney started this trend, she stayed in 4 for the whole thing.
Renee Fleming nailed it...... No one else has ever come close.
