Making an Anvil Stand

- This video demonstrates the making of a portable steel anvil stand. Often blacksmith's anvils are mounted on heavy fixed bases. If you want to move the anvil around, those stands aren't much use. So here blade smith Walter Sorrells shows the making of a much more portable style of stand.

Walter, I've been a blacksmith since 1967 professionally. I learned years ago that with lighter anvils if you place a piece of heavy metal under the anvil and fasten the 2 together it functions like an anvil with a much heavier weight. I have 2 anvils, one 85 and one 100 lbs on stands like yours with heavy metal blocks underneath and for forging they act as 125-140 lb anvils. And they are still oveable around the shop.
Agree 3 legs are for uneven floor.
I welded 1 /2" washers so I can anchor into my gravel floor
Thanks
I can't even make one sit or fetch.
So glad you made this. I was totally eyeballing it in your last video. I'm doing my first blacksmith project this year
Looking forward to this.
Perfect timing! Just got a vevor, AND I have a micro-shop, with plenty of 2" pipe, and a Flux cored mig welder, who I lovingly named, Althea :)
Looks good..!
If you need extra weight in your stand you could easily lay some sand bags over your cross pieces between the legs all while keeping it portable!
Thanks for the video...
Great job, inspired me to upgrade my stump stand!
Great job and a good creative idea to save money 😎🥰
Thanks again for sharing your time and talent! KANSAS
Very cool. My anvil sits on a tire (placed on my balcony) - no doubt less ideal ;)
Improvised mine out of 6x8 lumber originally. Would like better also do a table for grinder and hand work. Unfortunately have to wait on wrist to finish healing
Nice job! Do you think putting sand in the legs would stabilize the slide? Might hello continue to reduce any remaining ring? Thanks for the video!
I like the simplicity of it and will be fabricating a three leg stand soon due to uneven floor and my current 4x6 base rocking slightly. If you wanted to weight the stand would you try and put the weight lower down or up right under the anvil? I have a 70lbs anvil and want to make a base of at least 50lbs.

I always heard the anvil should be your fist height. Your video actually showed it though. A hand with a hammer is roughly a fist below you.
Locking wheels/castors
Seems like a good idea at first. But I’m not so sure whaling on something with wheeled ball bearings is good over the long term.
If you add a couple of "speaker magnets" on the underside of the flat horn and on a side or two will deaden it even more. Just saying.
MASTER PLEASE FILTER THE WELDING FLAME THANKS
wher do you source your anvils?
Where can you buy this anvil and what is the price?
eBay, Amazon or from Vevor. The cheapest I’ve found is eBay. The black version, which has a slightly harder surface, is about $275-$285 shipped. But it either comes in a flimsy box or naked with just a shipping label. Mine should be here this Thursday, Jan. 19th.
