- When there’s an emergency on board, there’s one team that’s on duty 24/7. Damage Controlmen. As a DC, you are a Navy firefighter and first responder, responsible for saving the lives of fellow Sailors. Whether there’s a burst pipe on the mess decks, or an explosion on the flight deck, you’re there to keep the ship and its crew out of harm’s way. Learn more about life as a DC at bit.ly/2wGoip1.
Every Marine an Infantrymen, every Sailor a Damage Controlmen.
The main issue with this rate is you gotta train and teach other rates how to be a fire fighters on the ship. And most aren't interested in learning.
I teach sailor's that I'm working with and I can agree with you. It comes down to your home your on the ship and if something goes down the only people you have are those beside you. Fighting fires isn't a hard task until you have a bunch of little accidents that people make like not disposing hazmat properly and then it causes a big casualty. I came in the navy as Epact with experience as a firefighter in the civilian side. It is honor to serve and protect all of you. The Navy has improved it's defensive damage control! Hooyah!!
Not the Ship I was on. Everyone was involved. the ONLY Sailors i ever had a problem with were Ensigns.
I'm pregnant.
I don't feel like working.
@@benfultz4463You've obviously never written an operational report before but please do go on...
Probably one of the hardest enlisted jobs. DC's deal with actual possibilities of death...
Hey I ship out on //and I was wondering if you know what a damage controlman dose on a daily or the day to day deployed
@whosbait8895 edit your post to remove the date (OPSEC)
But DC's are incredibly important to the overall safety of everyone during emergencies. So they do a TON of drills...all day and night. Think of them as "emergency vehicle and personnel" There's more that they do, but they are definitely a 'no nonsense rate' and that's due to the nature of their work
So, you'll wear a red coveralls and be maneuvering to all areas of the ship
We definitely love our DC's and always need more good ones - do great things out there
@@bmyers6831 This helped a lot thank you so much.I will do my best
as a volunteer firefighter of almost 6 years, i have experienced watching people i care about die in front of me. its not fun at all, but the key is to communicate with your peers, and they will help you through it. im still seeing flashbacks from something that happened 3 years ago but Igot through it and anyone else can too. even if something happens, you'll be ok :)
I was in for 20 yrs , fought all kinds of fires floods etc. ! one improvement I see here is the scott air pack, vs the old A3 And A4 oba that we wore.
A friend just retired after 20 years
Please keep uploading these
Agreed
I'm going to talk to a recruiter wednesday. This is the rate im hoping to be able to get into!
the school is alot of fun!
You’ll also learn basic damage control in boot camp and it is so much fun
@@gus452 hell yeah I'm ready! I ended up getting equipment operator!
Jacolby Kirkhart ahhhh EO, you’ll be a seabee
I ship out next week and DC is my rate! 😀👍🏽
I was a BT then switched to HT and I absolutely LOVED fighting fires. I was ALWAYS #1 Hose man. HT-3 Tom Fast always had my back. Once the Chiefs berthing was on fire and once e entered the space, We worked our way to the Rack that was ablaze and everything around it was on fire I yelled over the noise "It's the Chief master at Arms rack. Lets wait minute and he looked right in my eyes, grinned and nodded and we let it burn for a few minutes and then commenced to putting out the fire. when we got back to the HT shop, after our equipment was all stowed and we sat there having a smoke. Ht-1 said That was a pretty good job guys. Fast leaned over and said "Ask Beer what stunt he pulled?" I just laughed and said "We took our time to make sure we did it right"
God bless you folks. Back in the day, we were all firefighters, not the gear you have today. OBA’s(they were explosive), mechanical foam(yeah, the stuff made from animal blood), sea water 1 1/2” hoses and if the fire pumps worked, the the p-250 gasoline fire pump complete with rigid suction hose with a foot valve, hoped they worked, at least they did when we needed them, thank you PMS, no, not that PMS(planned maintenance system, PMS and R div)HELL, it’s been 40 years, I hope they’ve improved since then. It can get really REAL when you’re 130 miles offshore and sitting on top of 3000 feet of ocean when shit hits the fan.
And above all, thank you for what you do for us and each other. Keeping each other safe keeps all of us safe.
Former MM2, Gearing Class DD GUY.
1977 USS OKINAWA (LPH-3) (2) Shipboard fires, one forward ship, Boatswain's Locker, other Marine's barracks (just other side of bulkhead of engineering living space, where I was, got too hot to the touch!)5 days out at sea, 5,000 miles away from port, en-route to Pearl Harbor, 1230 hours, jumped out of our racks and fighting fire with OBA's on, ankle deep in fire-main (sea water).
I’m thinking about joining navy to do this to the people who are in it is it worth it and should I join go become it?
Is there CWO for this Rate?
Anyone notice this the same ship we’re on during battle stations 😂

When you’re back in civilian world do you have to go through any fire fighter Academy or are you basically a certified fire fighter when your time is up?

as a volunteer firefighter, trying to join the navy, would love that job. im going to meps on monday. do they have normal structural firefighting as well as ARFF and boat fires? whats the minimum asvab score for that mos?
Hi There- Typically one needs at least a score of 32. Additionally, a score of 50 is considered competitive.
There are study guides and tutoring programs available for the ASVAB, although recruiters are not allowed to provide coaching or tutoring. I can't tell what is real and what is battle stations. I went through boot camp before that simulator was built. (2001). We had this building where the walls were painted to look like bulkheads, and we had to use our imagination.
Just went through it, so easy to tell
@@michaelglover2871 I guess that means the guys at great lakes did a fantastic job then haha. The building they have there now really I'm quite impressive.
So basically any rate in the navy? Im an EM and ive done pretty much everything shown in here.
Jay Jay EM MM EN DC HT are all Fireman jobs
The DC rate gets advanced training though, not just the basics
Gus Rousonelos agreed
Every sailor is a fire fighter, DC/HT are the Advanced teams. While others head to firelockers to gear up, DC/HT have a rapid response team that run to the fire till the other teams are ready.
As a former HT/ rapid response team member I can tell you we train everyone onboard to assist in fire fighting. The main fire fighting force is the DC/HT as advance training is apart of those rates daily jobs.
@@qp2qp226 As a DC, does any of the training or knowledge you acquire while serving in the Navy be of any use if you were to pursue a civilian firefighting career afterwards? Saw a guy saying you're better off going into the air force for that.
Ohey, CVN 77
...fire fighting gear has come a long way since the Cold War. 41 for freedom!

How difficult is the mechanical "handy-work" element to the DC Rate? I'm good with basic car maintenance and Carpenter work as a civilian, but not much else.
I'm just nervous about taking up this rate.
You don’t weld at all. A DC man is specialized in putting out fires and maintaining the condition of firefighting equipment. Your primary task is to fight fires and control flooding. It’s also your responsibility to teach other rates about DC, as everyone is required to be basic DC qualified.
