The main issue with this rate is you gotta train and teach other rates how to be a fire fighters on the ship. And most aren't interested in learning.

I teach sailor's that I'm working with and I can agree with you. It comes down to your home your on the ship and if something goes down the only people you have are those beside you. Fighting fires isn't a hard task until you have a bunch of little accidents that people make like not disposing hazmat properly and then it causes a big casualty. I came in the navy as Epact with experience as a firefighter in the civilian side. It is honor to serve and protect all of you. The Navy has improved it's defensive damage control! Hooyah!!

@whosbait8895 edit your post to remove the date (OPSEC)
But DC's are incredibly important to the overall safety of everyone during emergencies. So they do a TON of drills...all day and night. Think of them as "emergency vehicle and personnel" There's more that they do, but they are definitely a 'no nonsense rate' and that's due to the nature of their work
So, you'll wear a red coveralls and be maneuvering to all areas of the ship
We definitely love our DC's and always need more good ones - do great things out there

I was a BT then switched to HT and I absolutely LOVED fighting fires. I was ALWAYS #1 Hose man. HT-3 Tom Fast always had my back. Once the Chiefs berthing was on fire and once e entered the space, We worked our way to the Rack that was ablaze and everything around it was on fire I yelled over the noise "It's the Chief master at Arms rack. Lets wait minute and he looked right in my eyes, grinned and nodded and we let it burn for a few minutes and then commenced to putting out the fire. when we got back to the HT shop, after our equipment was all stowed and we sat there having a smoke. Ht-1 said That was a pretty good job guys. Fast leaned over and said "Ask Beer what stunt he pulled?" I just laughed and said "We took our time to make sure we did it right"

God bless you folks. Back in the day, we were all firefighters, not the gear you have today. OBA’s(they were explosive), mechanical foam(yeah, the stuff made from animal blood), sea water 1 1/2” hoses and if the fire pumps worked, the the p-250 gasoline fire pump complete with rigid suction hose with a foot valve, hoped they worked, at least they did when we needed them, thank you PMS, no, not that PMS(planned maintenance system, PMS and R div)HELL, it’s been 40 years, I hope they’ve improved since then. It can get really REAL when you’re 130 miles offshore and sitting on top of 3000 feet of ocean when shit hits the fan.
And above all, thank you for what you do for us and each other. Keeping each other safe keeps all of us safe.
