It really doesn't bother me when you go off camera. I like that you are learning a new skill at the same time as I am learning. I love that you can make something that looks complex and beautiful out of a simple cane. Thank you Donna
Ms. Donna you are amazing! Thank you for showing us how you create your beautiful body of work. I enjoy your teaching methods and all your little things that make you , you! The humming or the bbops and oopsies. All of it make you even more amazing and cool in my book. Certainly makes me feel better about all my eccentricities and stuff. Thank you!!🎉❤❤❤
You really weren't that far off screen. I already see that the logistics part is improving for you. It is a huge learning curve, and you are doing marvelously! So please give yourself grace. We are here, learning from a Master, who is kind enough to share her skills and talents with us! That is amazing to me! Thank you for being willing to DO this!!
I'm so glad you are doing youtube videos for us, Donna. The deft precision of your movements as you handle the clay signals your experience and expertise. And your explanation for how and why the cane develops the patterns is so clear. Thanks.
I am so happy that you decided to join the tutorial world. I have many of your books but watching you do a project is so much better. You are a great teacher because you have an idea in your head of what you want to do and if something goes off-script you make the best of it which really helps beginners like myself that have tried to follow the instructions but something went wrong somewhere and frustration sets in and I feel like the whole project is worthless. Watching you, you just go with the flow and say well let's see what happens really helps. Thank you so much for your help with doing the videos. You have done amazing things with Polymer Clay. I can only hope to be a better clayer with your support and instructions. Keep up the good work
Hi Diane, so glad you're enjoying the tutes! Yes, I decided when I started this channel that I was not going to make everything perfect, that mistakes are opportunities, too! It's easy to think that every day is great for someone else but that's just not true for anyone, right? Keep watching, my friend and enjoy. Cheers, D
Thank you for sharing! I’m learning so much and getting so many ideas from your videos. Just watching your hands move as you handle the clay is so helpful for me as I am beginning.
Donna you are way TOO hard on yourself ! You knowledge and skill is AMAZING. We should be honoured that you take the time to share your knowledge with us. I look forward to learning more from you 💞
Donna! I’m so glad that you’re doing tutorials here! Your knowledge and talent is amazing! I’ve always been fascinated with canes, and now I’m learning how with your help. I’m also a RUclipsr and I can’t figure out how to do many things to enhance my videos. I’ve almost gotten to 500 subscribers! Now I’m more excited to make more of my own canes instead of buying them. Huge thanks! 😊
Just a very brief look at the beginning of this, i am struck with how perfectly beautiful these canes are. And i do mean PERFECT! It’s wonderful to see and so inspiring. I do make some of your designs with your clear very detailed and clear instructions. Such beautiful art, great teaching. Thank you so much.
It's a real treat to see you work on screen. Your work is beautiful, & I started my polymer journey with your books & learned such a lot. You have such a flair for colour & shape..thank you ..
Wonderful. I actually like your style of teaching. It lets us realize that things change and nothing is totally within our control. I am just so glad you started teaching I am learning so much from you.
Love the black and white series , awesome canes , you have helped me improve with all these wonderful tips, so glad you have your own channel now ! Look forward to future tutorials! Good luck with learning RUclips , I'm am one of those challenged with video recording and pasting links and the rest of those technological wonders.
Keep doing you! I love your style of talking to us while you create, it’s like being in the room with you! This black and white series is awesome! Can’t wait to see what we do with our canes in the end!!!
i have no problem when you drift off screen i am still learning skills from you , you are very clear with instruction but also explain that you could change your direction of where you are which encourages us to try different styles thanks donna for sharing your expertise with us have a great week!
Really love your style and I appreciate your changes when you make tutorials. It shows people you can put your own twist on a tutorial, I try to always do that. That's wonderful about clay .. you can! I dont care if you go off camera, stop being hard on yourself! Your doing an amazing service to us
I LOVE YOU, DONNA! I've worked with polymer clay in the past (I'm currently working with precious metal clay) but I've been looking for ways to incorporate affordable color into my work and I think polymer clay is the way to go. I've learned so much from your videos! You're an awesome teacher and a gifted artist. Joined your Members Only classroom and it's worth every penny!
I saw someone working under their camera and they marked little X’s in the four corners as a guide to not drift beyond them or they would be off camera. Simply look through your camera and mark your work field . Hope that helps! I made this cane and it came out awesome! Thanks Donna!
I do like the squared tile cane (on your left) it reminds me a little bit of Ginkgo leaves! Thank you Donna, I enjoy your tutorials and all the happy noises, it's like being with you in person - almost! 😉😘
Your new tutorials are fantastic! As far as working off camera, if you widen the field-of-vision and zoom out the lens on your camera to more of a wide angle, it will give you more room to work with. The wider angle will show more work surface. You can also raise the camera up, if you are using a tripod to show more work surface. Don't know if that helps you but wanted to share since I learn so much from you!
Hi Donna. I'm super new to cane making and I just wanted to say hi from little old New Zealand. I am so happy to have found you. You are so awesome! I just love your enthusiasm and your passion for your craft. And you are so knowledgeable and I enjoy your teaching methods and the way you take us on these creative adventures. Thankyou so much. I'm super inspired now! Cheers Mandy
I think you’re doing fantastic, thoroughly enjoying all your videos! I love your playful personality that truly shines through in your videos, makes them so entertaining to watch.
Hi Donna, just found your channel and love it. Had lost my mojo since Xmas but am claying at last. Thank you so much for your videos, so inspiring. Am tackling canes for the first time, but just love the playing. Keep them coming. Thank you.
I am so glad you decided to get on RUclips and even more glad I found your channel. I remember watching you on The Carol Duvall Show and becoming fascinated by polymer clay. I think I bought one of your books. After all these years I am finally going to get some clay and start. My question is since I don't have any clay, how much of the black and white would I use to make the cane? I love black and white so very excited for this series. Also wanted to tell you that my husband was listening to you as you were making the canes. He has to listen to a lot of the people I have been watching and he said I like her the best! Your teaching style is wonderful. You are taking us through your thought process. I have watched countless videos on polymer clay that the person is just chopping up clay and adding paint. I believe I have watched almost every single one of your videos and am learning technique and the why you do something. So thank you so much.
Simple yet stunning. As always another great tutorial. Off to share on my little guilds page where they’re all newbies so this is perfect for them xxxx
Hope your not in the bathroom today!! You made me smile….it was a good example of how to do your presentations.. I can’t use the pc. This is an I pad which I manage. Lovely cane easy to follow. Happy new year to you and yours.Hugs from England.🥰🥰💕🐶🐶🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍
Thank you, Marty! I am very grateful to youtube for making it possible. I wonder how many gb I’ve uploaded (for free! Holy cow). Has to be a lot, kid. 😊❤️
Thank you so much Ms. Donna for sharing your time and master clay expertise with us 🙏😍!! I love anything black & white and am looking forward to what you will show us next 😃well actually I love everything you teach us .. lol !!!! PS: the ring you are wearing is so beautiful, do you have a tutorial for it ?
ty for this tute...this cane reminds me strongly of maori design like in the tukutuku panels in the marae. im off to attempt, i love your work, from new zealand
The RUclipss brought me down a rabbit hole. lol I do a lot of art and I've never seen this before. These are beautiful. Can you please tell me what it is and what you do with it? Thank you.
Hi KB! This is polymer clay. You cure it in the oven. This tutorial instructs how to make a cane. Think sushi - every slice off the block is the same. This tute is part of a series of black and white techniques that will end in several tutorials using them to make neck pieces. Check out the other two! The first starts with several necklaces I made. Cheers! D
I would really like to know how much clay to start with. I can adjust but to see what you have can you share how much you started with. That is something no one does when they start.
I understand, Pam. Regarding this series, I’d say have two pkgs of white and of black. start with one pack of each and you might need to dip into the second. The canes aren’t huge. You should be alright, kid. 😊❤️
Thank you. I try not to make a huge amount so that I dont have a lot left over and use every scrap I can. I recently purchased the black out and hope that will work on some of the small peices that I cant reuse. @@DonnaKatoArt
I don’t really see you go off screen, doesn’t affect the teaching at all! I do have a question! I’ve been making a lot of your black and white series canes, you seem to keep your white so pristine! How!?? And that’s a serious questions- so I have made sure to clean all equipment between black and white, I try to get all the black off of my hands, but it never fails, as I reduce my white turns gray! I can see it when I put the pieces together - ugh! I wear my shirts light, I just can’t imagine how yours are always still pure white as you reduce . Tips! ? Maybe you can do us a short” this is what I do” video?
Might I suggest you mark off your work surface with blue painter’s tape just outside the camera’s view and that will help remind you that you’re off screen. (But honestly it didn’t bother me, I didn’t miss anything critical :)
