    *This is *NOT* a cheap livestream setup. It is for a business which provides value to customers via livestream. However, in the video, I do cover less expensive options. If you're trying to livestream for the first time, use your computer or phone's in-built camera. My first suggestion for higher quality is to add a USB microphone like the RODE NT-USB Mini for about $99: ruclips.net/video/lM020uMNeJs/видео.html
    Also, if you don't want a big microphone in the frame, that is perfectly acceptable. I'm not saying you must. However, since this is not a narrative film, but a live broadcast, it is generally considered acceptable for the microphone to show in frame. In fact, in some ways the very prominent microphone helps the viewers understand that this is a live broadcast in an unconscious way.

      @@curtisjudd I agree; you can't judge someone's gear. I have had people say the same thing to me about my cameras and lights - overkill. But as a pro, like yourself, you need the equipment to get the job done. There are no excuses. I can't tell you how many young photographers I have partnered with on assignments that want to travel light and thus leave gear we later needed at home. I tell them if you're going to travel light then go on vacation, on this trip we have work to do, and we need to make sure we have what we need when we need it. In this video, you were showing YOUR set up, not everyone else's.

      Brand new to this, but I have begun assembling a decent set up. I am currently not planning on doing live broadcasts (though live may be a future option). Current plan is doing recorded multi-cam presentations with screen capture . Am I correct that I would not need a time code device like a Tentacle if I am using the ATEM Mini *Pro* in a studio setting? Am I also correct that the plain Mini does not provide time sync?
      Also, I have a MixPre 3 II...am I correct that this won't feed directly into the Mini? Would I need to use a Tentacle to sync the Mini with the MixPre? Or is there another option?

    Thanks again for your comments during the live. In case anyone’s interested to know this, if you are using Wirecast and you have a suboptimal MAC (I.e. don’t have high specs) you might be able to avoid too many dropped frames/excessive CPU usage by switching from X264 H.264 output to Apple H.264 . I went from 92% CPU to 50% on average by making that change. Edit: thanks for that clap tip! I didn’t think of that and it will come in handy for my darkroom streams.

I ended up checking eBay twice a day and last week I was able to snag one up and get it shipped in 2-3 days buy it now for the normal retail price. So you might check eBay. There are “back ordered” listings but every once in a while a listing will pop up for them. The one I found was at the bottom of scrolling the first page when looking for ATEM Mini. The seller had about 20 of them. Good luck! They are a great piece of gear.

    That's a real nice setup Curtis. For my streaming audio I use a RODE Rodecaster in Stereo mode. I have an ATEM Mini, but since it is only really 1 camera for myself, I've never thought it would be much use. My streams usually involve bringing guests on and for this I use Skype video with NDI enabled. I then setup a shot in Wirecast for guest and myself. I switch between camera shots using Streamdeck. Wirecast is what encodes everything. I have an iPad as a shot too, usually slides from Powerpoint. I record locally to HDD. But with all of this going on I find that the Skype + Wirecast tends to really tax my system. Do you bring on guests via video? If so, how do you handle that?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 года назад +2

      Hi Gary, thanks for the details on your setup. I usually use Skype to record locally using Ecamm Skype Recorder though I haven’t been happy with what it does to frame rates. I think Skype doesn’t like 23.976 so everything gets a bit choppy looking. I have not had good luck doing interviews as live-streams - probably my internet connection. The 10-core iMac hasn’t had any issues keeping up but it’s a 10-core Xeon so it’s pricey.

    • @GaryStockton
      @GaryStockton 4 года назад +2

      Curtis Judd Thanks Curtis, yeah biggest challenge for me has always been guest audio, in many cases they don’t have a decent microphone or have Skype on their phone and best we can do is have them wear earbuds. I got the ATEM mini to shoot some panel discussions at the company, and I think for multi-cam editing on the fly it will be super useful once everything gets back to normal. They built us a professional studio with sound booth, control room all decked out with blackmagic designs hardware, we saw it.. then we had to work from home after that, so we can’t wait to get back. Your iMac sounds like a beast.

    Another well presented run through. Thanks Curtis. I was looking at the Blackmagic multi-cam switcher with interest. I don't need it yet as I'm ony at the stage of producing my first few vids for youtube. Live streaming video is a great technology and in everyone's reach. You basically have your own multi-cam live TV show. I can't wait to try it, but for now I must stay on course. I have a couple of good iPhones, a Sony A6400/16mm Sigma combo, a DJI osmo pocket with the freewell wide angle adapter plus a very old Panasonic GH 1 with a very good second hand Nikkor AI 50mm 1.2 adapted to M4/3. I think all of these cameras can use hdmi or have adapters. The only one I'm not sure of is the Pocket Osmo. So I have great autofocus and tracking, a handful of cameras and pretty good lights. I think I can film with what I have. Microphones are a little thin on the ground tho. An old AKG ATR55, a Rode Video Micro, one Rode Wireless go a Tascam DR-10L plus lavalier mic and I have a Zoom F6 recorder. I need the obvious : better shotgun mic but I also need to record small groups of musicians, like 2-4 at a time mostly acoustic. I know I'm gonna need a couple of instrument mics. I really like the cheap and cheerful Russian pencil mic you mentioned recently. That would be an excellent choice for now provided I shock mount it/them...

    • @curtisjudd

      I think that for most audiences, HD for live stream is sufficient in 2020. If you're doing something that requires or benefits the audience in 4K, then the cost of streaming goes up substantially. Totally do-able, just requires much more expensive switchers, encoders, and a very solid connection to the Internet.

    One thing that was a big deal for me and some other folks that I've helped out with their work setups during COVID was to get the mic physically decoupled from the desk. I initially used a desk-mounted arm (not a tiny little USB-mic stand, thankfully) to "boom" a hypercardioid mic in a Lyra shockmount above the camera's field-of-view, but the desk itself resonated at ~40 hz when I hit it or typed too hard. I could suppress the resonance's fundamental adequately with my ATEM's HPF, but the first and second harmonics (80 and 120 hz) were still doing violence to my sound and I couldn't fix that without coloring my voice. Moving to a wall-mounted arm made my setup much better.
    I have a dual-monitor setup with the camera peeking between the monitors and the mic boomed out over and in front of them, about 9-12" from my mouth (basically the tightest boomed position I could achieve staying outside of the camera's head-and-shoulders FoV). A hypercardioid mic works well there, because the extremely nasty reflections from the monitors land much closer to the HC's nulls than to a cardioid's 180 deg null. Like you I have a MixPre between mic and camera, and I often use NoiseAssist to attenuate fan/environmental noise.
    I used my BMPCC4K because I can control it from the ATEM (also overkill, though I'd kill for that dual-pixel AF in your C200. I've considered switching to my 1DxIII more than once for that reason. Instead I've decided to try to focus on staying reasonably still).
    Using something like my SM-7B at a couple inches would be a major improvement to sound quality (especially because reducing working distance would allow much better ambient rejection, including those pesky monitor reflections). I use the boom-style mic because I use my setup mostly for meetings and work-related streaming, and having a monster mic in the FoV would come across as a bit pretentious. The idea for work is to look and sound good without looking like you obsessed over it or threw obscenely expensive gear at it, even though you did.

    I will start to live stream on my RUclips channel (Photography lighting tutorials :) and I have a quick question. I also have the Shure SM7 and I want to connect it to my Canon 5D Mk4.
    My plan is to connect the SM7 to my Universal Audio Apollo Twin to get the gain up, then get hold of a cable with two 6.3mm that will send out the audio to the 3.5mm input on the Canon 5D Mk4.
    Do you think the simple Canon audio input will destroy the audio quality too much?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 года назад +1

      Hi botvidsson, I haven't worked with the 5Dmk4 personally, but I think it will probably work. One challenge you'll need to consider is that your Apollo will output a line level signal and the Canon takes a mic level signal. So you may need an attenuator cable something like this: bhpho.to/2V4D4Dr

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 года назад

      Hi Rainer, the ATEM Mini Pro has 2 mic/line switchable 3.5mm stereo inputs on the back which would be the most direct way to connect. You'll just need to adapt from whichever type of cable your mixer or controller outputs. So if you've got two 1/4" TRS balanced outputs, you'll need a dual 1/4" TS to 3.5mm stereo TRS adapter cable. We demo-ed one of those here: ruclips.net/video/3yhwLUtyCOU/видео.html
