- In Israel, only a small minority of young people refuse to carry out their military service, which is compulsory for both men and women. These conscientious objectors, known as "refuseniks", have always been stigmatised in a country where the training is considered a rite of passage that forges national identity. But since the October 7 Hamas-led attacks and with Israel on a war footing, those who refuse to serve are accused of being traitors. FRANCE 24's Andrew Hilliar and Mélina Huet met with young Israelis who are ready to go to prison to uphold their principles.

They are here, who refused to kill innocents
But Hamas kills and kidnaps innocents.
It’s great to hear there are still some Israelis with integrity & compassion. Thank you.
🤣🤣
Now if only Palestinians have integrity and compassion and stop supporting the terrorist group Hamas
@@lorenzomizushal3980 to be one (Palestinian) does not automatically imply the other. In the Oslo Accord in the 90’s the 2 state solution was agreed to by Yasser Arafat, head of the PLO, and Yitzak Rabin, Israel’s PM, who was later assassinated by an extremist who opposed the Oslo Accords, not a Palestinian
I think there are more than is reported. Netanyahu has for many years courted and got elected the Ultra Orthodox and far right forces to justify his government’s agression
@@luisecawthorne1025 This is an important piece of the history that needs to be remembered. Peace is the only answer
Well done. Hopefully, more young people will follow their lead and become conscientious objectors. The best way forward is peace, with equal rights and equal protections for all
When flowers arose from swamp.
Salute to your humanity and bravery brothers and sister. 💐
these two brave kids are very brave and inspirational
They calledit what?
A democracy in middleEast?
😂😂😂😅
Jesus responded, “What appears humanly impossible is more than possible with God. For God can do what man cannot.” -Luke 18:27
I thought it was difficult being a left-winger in one of the most conservative states, but its nothing compared to what people in Israel who question & critique their government and military go through. I have tremendous respect for the people refusing to take part in the IOF, they are risking so much and show true bravery.
Its sad that such a majority of Israeli society are apparently so far-gone in their extremism and dehumanization of others that even expressing sympathy for children being bombed, displaced and denied basic aid is enough to get you suspended or fired from your job, socially ostracized, even criminally charged.
Israeli government and military: "Support us, we are the sole beacon of democracy, freedom and human rights in the middle east, therefore we are always the good guys!"
also israeli government and military: Sends conscientious objectors (conscientious objection is a human right) to prison.
Thank you for your humanity and your courage to speak up
Bravo vous avez raison de refuser de faire partie de l'armée d'occupation
Good humans will not hurt other .. Because They are truly holy and religious
Thank you for doing the right thing! You stuck to your principles and refused to be complicit in the opression and muder of inocentes!
This is democracy !!!
That takes extraordinary courage.
Ironically, the term “refusenik” comes from Jews in Cold War Soviet Union times who refused to accept Russian authority. Now both countries need conscripts for their military. 😂
Thanks for that. I thought the term had its origins in the beatnick literary movement in the 1950s. Counter culture in the US.
Adding ‘Nick’ to a verb turned it into a slur. Kinda the way that snowflake is now. 🤘
@@jiff80 it has a more almost Yiddish spelling though with “nik” as I think it was partly meant to (this is MY expression only) to de-genderise it, because in the Slav languages “ov” is male and “ova” is female, and the name often has a middle part which refers to the family, eg GORBY is Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. The “patronym” as its referred to is someone from the male side of the family
Congrats to these young Men.
Why does the headline refer to them as "refuseniks"??🤦🏿♂️
Because that’s how they’re called in their language
@@supernova7848 what language is that?
@@fradiavolo9293 Hebrew
It might also come from the 1950’s Beatnick social movement in the USA. They were anti materialistic, artists & writers. It also let to other counter culture movements.
Adding the ‘nick’ became a way of making that label a slur.
Staying Human
Shani Louk was a peace activist and refused to do service in the IDF.
We could see how Hamas treated her in the videos of Hamas last year.
These young Israelis give me hope for the future of Isreal.
👏🏼🧐 #StandYourGround 💯
That’s not how a democracy works. A country shouldn’t oblige its citizens to do military service. That’s not how democracy works. But wow, she’s first of all a good Jew refusing to become violent and harassing others. These are kids after all, they should be free to do what they want without any consequences
It actually can. Because there is duty and there is right. Military service is a duty. And you should not expect to get your rights with our serving your duty. The reason most democracies don't do that is because they have enough population that they don't need to forcefully enlist people. But a country like Israel , I would expect military service to be a duty.
With that being said I do admire the ones that refuse to enlist because of counciusness and their desire not to hurt Palestinians. That is courage.
🤣🤣
Take away his citizenship
for refusing to join the army? Thats a bit much.
@@madcat789 If you want to be a citizen then you need to follow the responsibilities of being one
There are dozens of things that they can do in lieu of military service and still supporting their country and fellow citizens! Community Service, working abroad in hebrew School to help local teachers in foreign countries, etc. Plenty of religious people (and I don't mean the Ultra Orthodox) do other things such as Sherut Leumi, where they never have to pick up a gun.
AND it is not just Jewish Males who we expect to do their national service! Israeli Arabs, Bedouin, and WOMEN are also expected to pull their weight!
Not a good idea if everyone refuses military service who'll defend the country against terrorists like Hamas
Why? If the man, any man, does not wish to join the military, by his right as a free human he does not have to be compelled too. To do so violates his civil liberty.
As I didn’t do military service my opinion should be taken with salt but I do think it adds a level of social cohesion that does more good than harm. Social contract theory seems to me broadly correct and if you want to have the benefits of Israeli citizenship, that should not be entirely cost free.
Weird situation. These people are nutjobs in Israeli society, but given the situation that puts them on par with most of the West. You'd think they could leverage their perspective with the rest of the world .
That's because Israeli society is nuts.
Cowards that refused to serve their country. Knd of like the old Vichy French who collaborated.
Hé is antisemetic i guess
Why is European so soft hearts of Israel? But Palestinian is drying with food and medicines water just they're talking
These are great men! Peace And Love to real HUMANS
