"Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Although its literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. However, steampunk and Neo-Victorian are different in that the Neo-Victorian movement does not extrapolate on technology while technology is a key aspect of steampunk.
Steampunk most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retrofuturistic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or of the modern authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld, Stephen Hunt, and China Miéville.Other examples of steampunk contain alternative-history-style presentations of such technology as steam cannons, lighter-than-air airships, analogue computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine.
The first known appearance of the term steampunk was in 1987, though it now retroactively refers to many works of fiction created as far back as the 1950s or 1960s."

Now THIS IS dark steampunk, this sounds like something's wrong. Like that steampunk world didn't go the way it was supposed to go, like a fallen dream and now everyone suffers the consequences of it.
This reminds us something that we, steampunk lovers tend to forget or not even think about....that Steampunk doesn't necessarily mean a better or brighter world.....but it can actually end up as a total nightmare.
I highly prefer the idea that a steampunk world would be horrible. If you think back to the Actual Victorian era, the working conditions within factories is god aweful. A video game that I think portrays mild dark steampunk well is Dishonored, although like I said the steampunk elements are pretty mild. It's mostly Victorian themed.
Most steampunk worlds should be dark.
Like Blade Runner, but everything runs on coal and clockwork.
@@ChiggaChiggaBruh frostpunk though not entirely steampunk has a dystopian outlook towards a potential steampunk fallout.
@@WAanik Frostpunk - 100% steampunk (if we do not take into account the hints in the trailer of the second part)
One day someone will see the potential in this genre and make something amazing. Its like an un tapped gold mine.
Edit: To everyone who is or was working on a project just know I'm rooting for you and and am excited to see what wonderful things you will bring into this world!
Closest thing that I can think of is Snowpiercer
Oh dude, I'm working on a novel RIGHT NOW. That's why I'm here, for the vibe music haha
@@jestice7596 be sure to let us all know when it's finished
@@Lubble- If I remember, I will come back here and comment when it's done haha. I'm hoping it will be published one day sooo...
@@jestice7596 looking forward to it
The Victorian era is my favorite era to look at!
May would agree. The late 1800s saw the rise of industry, mega capitalism, neo imperialism and progress. Unlike today but like all centuries before the path of advancement and perfection is paved on so many corpses. And perfection is relative not total. I hope we learn from all that. "To see the savage thing Wild and Free..."
Agreed. We need to see more steampunk Sci Fi in today's world
Mine to,I like that time, things where build and make to last
Steampunk is future, which happen too early
@@filipnovak2544 That's the interesting way to put it.
I imagine the image in the video is of the inner working of some monstrous clock tower, looming over the cold streets of old London.
I'm getting Mortal Engines vibes from this comment

Steampunk: The best sub-genre of the science fiction genre.
Edit: I've recently researched the Sub-Genres of Science Fiction, And while they are Objectively better to most, Steampunk is better for me since I like to revisit the past and Steampunk has a unique aesthetic with Pipes, Cogs, boilers, etc as well as having colors that appeal to me with dark colors of the Victorian Era, but I can see how most people would like Cyberpunk.
Lucky Top Hat Studios you mean cyberpunk
*DieselPunk
All above have tits, might as well like all of them
Chillwave is better aka “ Synthwave “ or what you may call Cyberpunk in reference to steampunk,
Gorgeous ambient. The perfect kind I expect from the Cryo Chamber.
Unusual for steampunk. Darker, slower, more gloomy.
This music helps me write. It's very inspiring tbh.
me too :)
Me three :)
32:00 to 38:00 are insane!!! Those "screams" and "moanings" sounded like the portal of hell ahahahaha i really liked it, cuz i'm reading "Dracula" by Bram stoker and this part match very well with my feelings
My favorite part of the song.
Gloomy in a Lovecraft-ian way !!!! I'm in love !! ^^
I’m reading too. I’m reading “Death’s Mistress” from The Nicci Chronicles. Music like this goes so well with fantasy novels
I imagine a w40k hive city noble driven insane, mumbling incomprehensible nonsense as the final attempt to call for help while the hive city itself is being consumed by a full-blown demonic incursion, and his personal chamber's doors are about to be broken down by possesed mob.
Imagine, in an alternate world, Charles babbage really built his mechanical analytical engine, and you find yourself in the heart of a steam powered computer, millions of gears, cams, pipes, axles, pistons, and chains, seem to go on and on, and then, you find a lone mechanical teletype... waiting for a command... what do you do?
What do i do?.....Let my Curiosity drive me. And see what happens next.
It took me so long to find something that was not the typical happy shiny bubbly steampunk music you find on youtube. SO GLAD i finally found this!
Just the thing to listen to whilst reading Perdido Street Station. It fits the New Weird genre as well.
This was so much better than I expected of a steampunk theme. Extremely well thought out sound scaping. Thanks again for all effort you put in this!
Just looking through the track list for this compilation has me all kinds of excited. Thanks, PROTOU and Simon, for putting all of this together!
God, this sounds like some sort of mad world. No laws. Society has crumbled. Everyone is at a level of misery, hate, fear and insanity. Love it.
SSSSSSSSSSSSTEAMPUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry, I couldn't hold my joy inside, I love you
Listening to this and reading about WWI is very fitting
"I think you misunderstand the gravity of coming events, Mr. Holmes"- Lord Blackwood
How I love this kind of music... I had been listening to Heralds since one year ago and now I can say it's one of my favorites albums.
Wonderful, we've been waiting for a gorgeous mix like that
Cryochamber is a motherlode of good music!
Cryo yall never cease to impress
Wasn't intending to work, but got a day's worth done, within the hour this was playing. Totally kept my mind in the right place.
This is the best dark ambient compilation I ever heard, especially second composion. Please, make more something like this
It's always nice when you find some great steampunk related content. I like this.
Wonderfully spot on. My manuscript thanks you again, Cryo Chamber!
Oh yes, the World War I flavor of steam punk, not the Victorian with gear glued to top hat. Finally.
Been waiting my whole life for this

I'm scared
deadass im getting goosebumps lol
Tried listening to this just now to lull myself to sleep (and to garner inspiration from it in the meantime) and I scared the absolute crap out of myself with my imagination lool. I love this :) good stuff
Anyone else have an insane Steampunk oc who created a train to help the public but it malfunctioned killing dozens of people and drew them mad?
Amazing dark vibes! It's really calming to listen this during my work or study :)
Great job and thank you for this compilation :)
This mix is so good for brainstorming, the mystery of every steampunk character I have
There is something about "Mechanical Pictures" by Flowers for Bodysnatchers. It's like a movie sountrack. Some very underrated and but secretly terrifying history film in the 1890s. I adore this piece so much
Reminds me a lot of True Detective season 1. That's a very good thing.
I am getting mood and mystery, subtle drama, even a hymn of humanity... but not quite Steampunk, not at first. Agreed.
Really love the atmosphere of this one, and with the picture and steampunk tag it reminds me the weird (in the best way possible) vibes of Garage, bad dream adventure. Def one of my favorites.
Currently boredom-writing my own steampunk dystopian "novel" (it'll never actually get published) and having this on definitely sets the mood
It might get published one day
This truly shows the dark era of what steampunk really means.
Thx Cryo Chamber for perfect atmosphere while playin Demons/DarkSouls! :D
Nice. I love Steampunk.
Amazing artwork!
Thank you!
I thank you, thank you, thank you. This is the best medication for the mind....
This is surprisingly relaxing. I'm falling asleep at my desk. :)
That goes right in my Blades in the Dark playlist
pap this on, crack open frost punk, enjoy your bliss.
Excellent !
"When she woke in the small room - her head groggy and her vision blurred - Tan did not know the room was a cell. Nor did she know the cell was in a vast prison buried underground. She could not have known the only access to the prison was by submarine or that the ocean covered half the planet. She would discover later the planet was on the other side of the solar system from her home, Teregnor. But Tan did know she was a Diviner, and her captors didn't. She could still leach dreams surreptitiously. In fact, she had been for the last three hours. All they knew was to keep watch over this small, Asian girl they had brought in last night unconscious. But Tan was already busy. And what she was about to do - by bringing their nightmares to life - would destroy them psychologically. Because that's what Tan did. She was a Diviner, and you didn't bother Diviners. You either killed them or fled their presence but you NEVER made them angry."
There's something about that narration that just seems off.
Morale of the story: Take no prisoners.
@@inf3cted194 for me it was asian. We are in space. You wouldnt refer to people by country or continent anymore. Youd refer to them by world or by solar system
@@drizzt102 Yeah, but it's more about the way that everything's written as a whole... Not complaining tho.
Wow! Wow! It's so awesome!
Wonderful Masterpiece sound composition 🎉🎉🎉🎉
awesome, brilliant.. so more pleasure i feel...
my mind was drifting
That first song owes a lot, sonically, to the old band Morphine. (They were one of my favorites.)
Wasn't expecting Glossolalia in here. It brings to my mind ghost of a young woman wandering through halls of an abandoned archive with cloud of tape recording pieces floating around her, not a blackened behemoth of a steam engine powering god knows what while devouring more and more coal.
Um glad to be real life steam punk when im an adult im building a steam punk city so who with me!
It's be amazing to walk through a steam punk style city, finding hidden walkways and alley ways, wearing a top hat and trench coat with a cane but inside is a sword, I've had dreams like that alot and honestly it's amazing to think about
I will add, the genre is yearning for a great composer and it is a gap that one of you fine folks will eventually fulfill.
Another fantastic video.
There really should be a 2 thumbs up option for music this good :):)
Listening to this to get me into the mood for running a Blades in The Dark campaign. It's gong to be great ^^
Blades is why I’m here too! Needed some mood music to draw my character to
I like it, I like it a lot.

Skutnik's Submachine games feelings
I'm reading horror stories while listening to this. Damn.
H.P. Lovecraft is strong in this one
It's all fun and games until the night sets in... The clouds are piling up and heavy rain now befalls the city... It's quiet and everyone has gone inside. Yet you continue to sneak around, trying to uncover any secrets this town might hide... People have been disappearing, yet nobody seems to acknowledge that... Everyone just continues as if nothing ever happened... You are not easily satisfied and continue to look for actual answers... This is already the second week... Yet the streets have become more and more dangerous...
(This is the kind of scenario i have to think of while listening)
You stepped off into port from one of the more rusted frigates. Taking a bit job, changing oils and feeding furnaces, the smog of this town brought back those crusting smells. The night fills the dockside. You step into the one dank alcoves to grab an evenings pie. The slick fish grease your insides, as you look along the old causeway. You watch the streets The roads are definitely emptying. Each night the sound of revelry grows more and more tired. The songs sung, grow more and more dissolute…
@Levente Lénárt I'm honored 👌

You know, stereotypical steampunk is often paired with dark steampunk, its just nobody ever notices or thinks about it. Think, for every foot of beautiful brass piping, cog-based contraption, and fancy dress, theres 99 feet of soot covered brick, burnt metal, crushed bone, disease and filth, and people who dont know clothing bereft of stains and soil.
One day i will make a game with this genre

Oddly enough, this is my choice video to listen to while reading Lovecraft's various works. It's just eerie enough, and ambient otherwise. The cult-like mutterings from time to time are quite apt.
