who’s telling anyone to upgrade every year. there’s a big majority of people who buys an apple thingamajig and keeps it for years. and it’s good for the used market as well.
I don’t understand people who change their phones every year. Or people who buy new cars every year or two either. All my tech and vehicles are preowned, and at least 5+ years old. They’ve got all the same features as the new crap, and they work well for what I need them for. At this point upgrading them would just be more money on one thing and one thing only- vanity.
I had an old 11 pro that was my moms old work phone before they got her a new one, that thing worked perfectly until about january when i dropped it (in the case) and the back glass shattered
Legit bought a 12 mini off someone for super cheap, battery still above 80% screen is flawless and I paid 1/10th the cost of a new iPhone here, thing works like a champ still.
Same! I'm a professional photographer and impressed with camera phones now! I'll never personally shoot a professional gig with my phone but if I go on vacation, I'm not going to bring the full setup like "maybe my 70-400 will come in handy!", nah, phone is perfect!
Pff, I'd rather just get a small, cropped sensor mirrorless camera and stick with mid-tier phones. Cheaper and lasts way longer than a flagship phone with the "good" cameras. Plus, even a budget mirrorless will beat the snot out of the best phones and doesn't rely on heavily processed trickery to get your picture.
The only thing I'm waiting for, and I thought Red was going to do it, is for the camera bezel to be replaceable. Imagine being able swap your own preferred camera mount to it to use pro lenses. If we could get mechanical zoom on a modern phone, you almost wouldn't need a DSLR.
The SEs are heroes. So glad Wade shouted out the SE3, it really is amazing that Apple keep making them. As my corporate worker phone, it is simply perfect for what it needs to be.
For me it was the graininess of the video that told me when the camera was different XD they all had some graininess but all different kinds or flavors if you will. funny enough the cleanest looking one was the iphone 7 but thats probably more to do with the studio lights and that its his dedicated filming spot. The new max wasnt bad but its zooming (he was saying lens changing i guess) was horrific.
Hi Wade Nixon, I wonder if I can use your channel idea, for my own use it is fine if not but your comedy and style of getting nuggets and demolishing them is just perfect, thanks.
Dank, something you can do is configure a phone using apple configuator, it takes a bit of time but you can configure it to either be in only one app, or only allow certain apps and disable features! This would be great to literally disable everything, have photos the settings app and the camera and that's it.

it's an advertising tactic to make you feel suspense during the unboxing and make them more rigid and feel more high quality and expensive, it makes you want to keep the box because it feels wrong to destroy or throw something like that away. i agree with you though!
the fact that even in the places they're doing USB-C it's at *2.0 speeds* from the freaking 2000s, unless you pony up for the pro, in 2024, is absolutely criminal. It drives me insane!
Fuck you and USB-C. The only reason I picked up an SE3 recently instead of anything newer is because it was the only one without that god awful port. USB-C is a scam, the speed is not worth it for the casual user given the fragility and just shit user experience. I was an Android guy all my life but switching to USB-C made me ditch it.
@@plushifoxed I don't get it. Are people actually connecting their phones to their computers as a second hard drive or something? AFAIC, it's a charging port, with maybe a bit of service mode utility thrown in. What else would you even do with it these days? @GreySatyr I've got a 14 Pro Max, Which I upgraded from an 11 Pro. Probably will wait till the 17 or 18 comes out, still got a tonne of mileage on the 14 left to go!
Sure, but the iPhone 16 is a vast improvement over the iPhone 10. You can say the same about every OEM, but nobody cares about them. I know one person who still uses a Galaxy S10E, and someone else who only just upgraded from a Galaxy S9 this year to a different phone. Nothing noteworthy is happening anywhere. People need to make peace with the fact that phones now are good enough that you don't need to buy new. Besides the battery degradation, you can buy a Pixel 6, Galaxy S21, iPhone 13, without really worrying about it being useless in 1 year.
you don't like fishing your phone out of your pocket, accidentally switching the content you were listening to, and then having to listen to 10 seconds of an ad before you can switch back?
Exactly. No bezels is one of those harmful trends I don't want to plague every phone, right next to curved screens. Thankfully for me Sony isn't doing that, they may be slow in upgrading their phones but that's a good thing for features like this because they're seen as unimportant. Another thing I miss is the lack of front cameras because nowadays they just put a hole in your screen. My previous phone had this on the side and it bothered me. Thankfully, again, Sony isn't doing that, they put a larger bezel on top to house the front camera with unobstructed screens. Seriously, their phones aren't the best of the best and newer releases are overpriced, but if you want a modern phone on an older design consider an Xperia. Their camera bumps are also tiny compared to a lot of phones now. They also have nail-removable sd card slots and a 3.5mm headphone jack on top of being waterproof.
The camera he is currently using cannot record in 4K at 60 FPS. It only records in 4K30, 1080p60, 1080p30 FPS, or 720p30. I would rather use 1080p60 over 4K30 any day.
I really agree with you on the "why would you want better?" thing. I just got an Android model released late last year for *200 CAD.* It has a thumbprint sensor, a long battery, a camera that can do 50MP, and enough RAM to let me switch between apps without needing to reload any of them. It's so good, I can't see why I'd ever need better?
this same mentality also applies to "real cameras" my daily driver is a panasonic LX-100 a compact camera from Sep 2014, 10 years ago! and it still takes great photos because I don't do high speed sports photography or astro photography or anything like that that really pushes the technical limits of the sensor or lens. I just take landscapes and urban photos, at human scales, that has honestly been a solved problem since the 60's. so my comparatively fancy camera with ultra high iso compared to film or my one finger optical zoom control so I never need to swap a lens out. it's all just quality of life features; most people that use a camera really could use old equipment and some good technique and still get amazing shots.
Yeah i also got a sony cybershot 10 years old, and whenever i go touring i still use that, over phones. I've got a vivo T2 pro, known for their camera, and it still takes worse photos than the cybershot.
Yeah I loved my camcorder 20 years ago. My mother in law has a significantly newer one that records to a memory card. Though of course you can't just chuck it in your pocket it is still pretty small and light.
I think Z flip is kinda getting that vibe in design, can use like portable camcorder tho a lot more portable these days n decent quality videos tho not so nostalgic
@@Wonderland2097 I had one of those and it was not good, no SD slot, no headphone jack, locked bootloader, no USB-c video out, no removable battery. So it lacks most features of a basic smartphone, not to mention camcorder features, even my 18 year old Sony has optical zoom, night vision, swapable battery, microphone input, good build quality. and honestly it still has pretty decent video for a lower resolution camera, it's clear and sharp for 480p video. But I do agree that they could make flip phone into a great video camera if they actually tried, although not with the folding screen as that failed in just over a year on mine, so not getting one of those again.
i bought the 15 because of exactly what wade mentioned with the cameras. it's fast, it's simple, and it's with me at all times. i don't leave the house much due to anxiety and general busyness, so i don't have much opportunity to go out somewhere for the specific purpose of photography- but i _love_ taking photographs. so usually the only time i have the opportunity to be out and take pictures is when i go to work, or have errands to run. there's a lot of pretty things to see just going about your daily life. since i'll always have my phone with me, i can take photos anywhere at any time and capture some really spectacular moments and scenes. i don't have to carry around a big heavy expensive single-purpose camera and spend tons of time setting it up and learning how to make it work. by that time a lot of the moments i capture would already have passed. with my phone it takes just a single second to whip it out and line up a shot, and click, i'm done. i would consider myself an amateur hobbyist, and for a person like me, it's perfect. it rolls all my media needs into a single device with little to no maintenance. that being said, i probably won't buy another phone until this one literally dies on me. he's exactly there's no reason to buy a new phone every year- it's hyperconsumerism at its most blatant. we're getting to the point that manufacturers are struggling to come up with any new or flashy feature that will have people come running. i'm of the mind that things, especially tools, should be used until they physically cannot be used anymore, and then recycled or passed on to someone else who _can_ make use of them. i know that happens a lot with the aftermarket of phones, which is good. but buying a new phone every year, at this point, just seems like a pointless "flex" for people who feel like they need to show off their wealth or posessions- like leasing a new sports car every year.
I love my iphone se, touch ID is a million times better then face ID, I really hope they keep making the SE line because I never want to let go of my good ol' touch ID
@@adre2194 Nope, they haven't even tried an under-screen scanner. Only hope we have is when they make all buttons like the camera slider the power key gets one.
This is why the mini iphone is the best iphone ever, its the same size as the old 5’s but its got the modern screen, better cameras, and it can still fit in your pocket
Yeah sure but the difference is quite minimal. It's in-between the current and first gen SEs. Combined with how much bigger the screen is despite it the tradeoff is worth it.
Bit late but, I'm a film student grad and optics nerd and just to say the zoom lens you have on your Sony is absolutly nowhere near the optical quality and sharpness that you could get from the very best sony lenses avialable. A more basic zoom lens from the general master range would optically be significantly better. Theres websites out there such as optical limits that explains optical characteristics of lenses and tests a whole host of different lenses. Of course I know you most likely have more than one lens its still good to know. Would also be nice to see the sony be used for main channel vids, I understand you want to use the iphone as camera equipment now but I wouldnt rely on it in the long term (please note I come from a classically taught videography perspective). I've used DSLRs and mirroless camera for short films and its insane how good they've become. To be honest an iphone 10 years in the future will most likely still be no match for todays full frame camera. Iphones have their time and place, and I'm glad that it works for you and that you enjoy using them.
Yo I got a sony alpha 100 from my father. He got himself a new one It is hella fun doing adjustments to settings and seeing what happens to the photo. It makes it much more fun and worth getting a good shot compared to how easy it is for somone unexperienced like me to make „good“ photos with an iphone. Anyways idk if you can help me but i was wondering if I really get more invested and interested into photography, do you think getting lenses for the alpha 100 makes more sense or going for an newer model (without going in debt) because of evolution in technology?

Sony still puts headphone jacks and SD slots in their flagships. They even record 4K120 out of all three rear cameras and have a physical shutter button.
Yea, USB C only offers bit perfect music vastly better. Current Bluetooth is completely indistinguishable for 99.9% of the population from anything else. And a tiny dingle can make normal headphones usable on USB C. Headphone jack is definitely needed.
The IPhone 7 twist is gold! Very well done :). Honestly, My rectangle of choice is the Iphone 6. Had it since launch and it's still going strong. Since I'm debating to start making little vids, I am now looking into a new IPhone, so thanks for the review. Have a great day.
I love how in the EU the AI features won't be available until further notice because of privacy laws, so this phone has a huge chunk of "features" missing. (I'd be looking for the off button anyway if I were to actually get one)
Maybe it's an age thing but i slowly care less and less about phones, their "features" and tech in general, and my smasnug xcover pro with its replacable battery and headphone jack from 2021 still works well enough despite me duct-taping the volume buttons back in, also since quite some time really every phone, even the budget ones "just work" so in my opinion spending more than 400€ for a phone these days is just nonsense. Greetings from Austria.
When we were younger the leaps and bounds phones were improving every year was genuinely incredible. These days the phones we have now already do just about everything we need them to, so the only "improvements" are silly gimmicks and privacy violations lol
I think we kinda got everything we need in a phone now. As long as the phone can last long enough and I can access the internet that's enough for a usable phone nowadays
Honestly after the smasnug note 9 came out, i stopped caring about phones. It had every single feature - minus high refresh rate screen. It was perfect
As a user of a iPhone SE for about 2 years, I can tell you my biggest gripes with it are 1. Screen to body ratio is absolutely awful by today's standards. The size of the phone as a whole is great, but the screen size isn't good. 2. Lightning. All of my other devices use USB-C, it sucks having to carry another cable just for one device. 3. It tends to get hot, like the cooling isn't nearly enough for the SoC. 4. Battery life isn't the best. The battery is a fine size, but the SoC is much less efficient that modern iPhones. 5. The speakers are really not as loud as they could be. However, there are some good things, like 1. It's still getting updates. 2. It's still reasonably fast. 3. Fingerprint reader. 4. It does have 5g. 5. It can do 4K30 (not 4K60 btw)
My 13 also had issues with keeping a decent temp at the end of its life. It often got so hot it wouldn't charge. If anything that's one of the things I've liked the most about the 16 Pro. The cooling improved drastically.
As a fellow SE user im so glad to see that thing get some love. Its genuinely the best phone i've ever had and i don't want my phone to do more than it does, like i just dont need it to.
I’ve loved my SE. I haven’t been a fan of the lack of a home button, and I love the form factor. Its smaller size is more comfortable to me, and the super sturdy cases I use beef it up anyways. All I need is a camera that captures the dumb things my friends and I do, so I’ll keep getting the SE as long as they make them.
I’ve had the SE2020 since new and have no plans on upgrading. It’ll get new back glass and a battery and continue to be my daily. Still love this phone.
What i like to do is buy flagship (mostly samsung notes) and use them for 6 to 7 years. Next month or two im getting s24 ultra, which will be perfect with its 7 years of software updates:3
Absolute perfect explanation of what i do, you do, and anyone that don't need to professionally work with something a new flagship is offering should do
That’s me basically. I’m gonna get a 16 pro because there’s a marginal difference between a 16 and a 16 pro once you get to that price point, I’m gonna use the LiDAR, and I’m gonna keep it for 5-6 years.
@@Ir0nFrog the difference is USB 2.0... which... That's awful, that Apple has done USB 2.0 on a flagship phone from 2024. 💀 (16 and 16 Plus USB 2.0 only).
A dedicated camera button? Amazing! Apple has finally caught up with my old Samsung Intensity II from 2010, though the new iPhone still doesn't have a slide out keyboard
I currently have an iPhone 13 that is on its way to borking it, and am getting a 16 Pro in November. I like my hard to run mobile games and insane amount of photos. I'm getting to a point where the 13 is just not doing what I need it to, but I'm also one of the few people that likes playing really intensive mobile games, and it was run into the ground by being my main device in general for a while there. Edit: I got the 16 Pro. It's a great upgrade that you will definitely feel if you haven't gotten a new phone in 3 years, like I didn't realize how unresponsive my 13 liked to get, and I got the new features from the 14 and 15 alongside a camera that doesn't look like trash when you zoom in. If you have a 14 or 15, definitely not worth it because most of the "new" features for me came on those phones, but a 13 or older, it's a big upgrade, especially in the cooling department. My 13 could not keep a decent temperature at the end of its life.
Finally a take that resonates with me. The main thing with the new pro models is for me, if you need a telephoto lens, you have to go pro. It's the only reason I'm buying a pro. But it's really important. Also as a photographer, the fact that the camera control button is in the right place will be a game changer. Yeah I know you can use the volume buttons, but half the time I end up pushing the sleep button.
i dont disagree with the take of "phone cameras are good cameras too" i just think that a phone camera and a standalone camera have different usecases and design principles. phone cameras are very much about flow and ease of use, which is amazing. but a standalone is more about control. sure its got higher quality but the biggest part is the control you have over it, but more control also means more work and more hands-on things
I have the 2019 SE, and all it ever needed was a new battery on the 4th year. It's still chugging merrily along, not a scratch, nor a crack. Not a hint of lag.
i have the 14 Pro Max, and i still dont feel the need to upgrade, infact i didnt feel the need to upgrade way back on the 12 pro max, only reason i did upgrade to the 14 was cause my battery expanded, there are really people who upgrade their phone each generation and its pointless and honestly id be pretty embarressed telling people i do that.
Ever since Apple released the iPhone 15, I felt it was weird because it came in quite early in my opinion. I thought Apple would release their phones every 2 years, but Apple started releasing after a year or so

I use a 7, Never broke anything on it, the small size lets the cases acrually work, and, as you said I can open it as I take it out. Only issue I ever had was overheating on big apps (I don't even use many apps anymore anyway)
I wish Apple had classic iPhone refresh options as such: iPhone Classic (one camera, up to 256gb); and iPhone Classic Pro (two cameras, standard and zoom, up to 512gb). Thumbprint sensor, headphone jack, standard features, because it’s classic.
I just noticed that Wade over here was recording with an iPhone 7 or 8 plus. Edit: I've just seen that he revealed that he used it to film this episode lol
i actually like keeping the packaging bc phones can get effed up so easily, so when i change phone i always keep the old one in its box and then if a friend for example gets their phone stolen i can give them my old phone. I just think the box can make them feel a little bit better, like its new to them.
Hey Dankpods, maybe try some camcorders, they have the same idea of pick up and shoot, internal zooming and often stabilization, would be interesting to see if they are usable for your style of shooting.

Im upvoting your comment on a Snapdragon 855 phone from 2019. it's still just as fast as any phone today in real world use.
who’s telling anyone to upgrade every year. there’s a big majority of people who buys an apple thingamajig and keeps it for years. and it’s good for the used market as well.

Apple will replace the battery for a very reasonable price.
As a photographer, I fully endorse phone cameras. The versatility, the quality, ease of use, I could go on and on but I think it speaks for itself.
Same! I'm a professional photographer and impressed with camera phones now! I'll never personally shoot a professional gig with my phone but if I go on vacation, I'm not going to bring the full setup like "maybe my 70-400 will come in handy!", nah, phone is perfect!
Do go on I want to know more please
Pff, I'd rather just get a small, cropped sensor mirrorless camera and stick with mid-tier phones. Cheaper and lasts way longer than a flagship phone with the "good" cameras. Plus, even a budget mirrorless will beat the snot out of the best phones and doesn't rely on heavily processed trickery to get your picture.
Please do go on
The only thing I'm waiting for, and I thought Red was going to do it, is for the camera bezel to be replaceable.

Biggest problem with the SE. No USB-C. The fact Apple is selling phones in 2024 without USB-C should be illegal in and of itself.
the fact that even in the places they're doing USB-C it's at *2.0 speeds* from the freaking 2000s, unless you pony up for the pro, in 2024, is absolutely criminal.

I miss bezels because it stops your idiot phone from thinking your pressing your screen when you’re just trying to hold it.
you don't like fishing your phone out of your pocket, accidentally switching the content you were listening to, and then having to listen to 10 seconds of an ad before you can switch back?
Just use a case.
I use a case so I don’t have that issue
Most phones have an edge rejection feature to prevent that

It's the way to have the full DankPods experience!
@pax1217 🤓 to correct you, it was actually an ipod camera (I erm acktually'd myself so you can't)
This is especially true for interchangeable lens cameras since the lens is what actually creates the picture, and good optics are timeless.

It can do 4K 60 just tap on the top right and click on 30
On mine it just switches between 30fps and 24fps
Well, now im confused, because Apple’s website says it can do 4K60, why cant mine?
Its because i was using the Most Compatible formats. It will not record 4K60 in the most compatible format, it uses the High Efficiency format.
My 13 also had issues with keeping a decent temp at the end of its life. It often got so hot it wouldn't charge. If anything that's one of the things I've liked the most about the 16 Pro. The cooling improved drastically.

One is made for normal people, the other is made for nerds. Many such cases.
Okay, then what about the Sony Xperia?
This
"You dont need it, but I do"
I don't need it, but sometimes when I think of it, I want it REALLY BAD! : )
Don't waste $1800
I have the 2019 SE, and all it ever needed was a new battery on the 4th year.
It's still chugging merrily along, not a scratch, nor a crack. Not a hint of lag.
im honestly considering going back to a flip phone and an mp3 player again, just so i can use good headphones again.
Sony still make flagships with a headphone jack
As an ex Sony sufferer, I still used mine with a type c DAC because it sounded a lot better than the built in jack
I just have a phone with one from 2019 😂 of velvet 5g its pretty great
Just bought a modern Walkman, was thinking to take the leap of faith, buy myself a flip phone and call it a day lmao
"Its so chuckable" 😂
“I don’t need it… I don’t need it… I NEED IT” -Apple simps
i have the 14 Pro Max, and i still dont feel the need to upgrade, infact i didnt feel the need to upgrade way back on the 12 pro max, only reason i did upgrade to the 14 was cause my battery expanded,
there are really people who upgrade their phone each generation and its pointless and honestly id be pretty embarressed telling people i do that.
give him time, dankpods is transitioning slowly.
He's got his hands full with moving PC to Linux. One day he'll swap over the phones.
@@ruinfox4108they made changing a consumable part in iPhone so inconvenient, that u bought a new phone. Tim Coc got u

@@greyw0lvwell, with the change to Linux, maybe he’ll transition another way too
I feel like the entire product announcement surrounding the iPhone 16 could have just been an email
They could have phoned it in.
Still got a 13 and love it. Not planning on upgrading until I can’t get updates anymore.
Wade, what you need is a camcorder not a hybrid camera.
10:30 the greatest plot twist ever
For some reason it feels weird to have the iPhone 16 released
Ever since Apple released the iPhone 15, I felt it was weird because it came in quite early in my opinion. I thought Apple would release their phones every 2 years, but Apple started releasing after a year or so
I really appreciate the dedication to keeping the "broadcast yourself" part of RUclips alive over on Garbage Time, hearing you mention going along for the ride was so gratifying!
" I didn't buy a phone I bought the camera"
Everyone's actual reason for buying iPhone.
I got the 16 pro max for the oled screen and buttery smooth gaming. I’m a trucker and sitting at stops it’s nice to have

7:39 😟 YOU MONSTER 🤯
Thanks for making my Friday evening even better!
i'm eyeing the 16 Pro for its smaller size, same camera modules as the 16 Pro Max, but mostly the upgraded microphone array ... Apple know how to drip-feed this stuff to us
I use a 7, Never broke anything on it, the small size lets the cases acrually work, and, as you said I can open it as I take it out.
Only issue I ever had was overheating on big apps (I don't even use many apps anymore anyway)
I wish Apple had classic iPhone refresh options as such:
iPhone Classic (one camera, up to 256gb); and iPhone Classic Pro (two cameras, standard and zoom, up to 512gb). Thumbprint sensor, headphone jack, standard features, because it’s classic.
I love how most tech channels are making reviews of it, and meanwhile Wade’s just on here bashing Apple
Now it has the camera button the Sony Xperia 1 V has
I just noticed that Wade over here was recording with an iPhone 7 or 8 plus.
7:42 thats how you open a iphone 👍
Was watching this part of the video and my jaw dropped just thinking: DankPods…YOU MONSTER…
This made me die inside😂😂😂😂
I bought a 5yo bottom tier flagship. It keeps on going!
bottom tier and flagship are two very different things

I use a galaxy s10e. Pretty good phone, 5yo and still good
Hey Dankpods, maybe try some camcorders, they have the same idea of pick up and shoot, internal zooming and often stabilization, would be interesting to see if they are usable for your style of shooting.
I haven’t needed up-to-date apple products in years. The only thing I’d consider is getting the latest iPad if they introduce something groundbreaking that my M1 iPad can’t do
nuget 16 pro max

It was cool seeing the third gen SE especially because not only is it the main phone I’ve been using since it came out but it’s also the main camera/microphone for my RUclips channel so it was sweet to see it get used on such a recognizable tech channel like this one
Just get the iPhone 13 Pro max
