I've never seen Stephen so disjointed in an interview. He was properly starstruck. Love it
I feel like he gets this way not just when startstruck but when he's rewriting the interview to maximize something that's going really well. But also that.
Colbert was supposed to interview him for 20 minutes, and we ended up sitting there for 55! He just had so many topics he wanted to cover!
I thought it said disappointed at first, and was like What?!
I know i would be, but he's doing a lot better than i would do if i was to meet Sir Paul McCartney.
Robert Piper wow what a treat lol
Holy shit... McCartney, Clapton and Townsend standing in the audience at show watching Hendrix! 🤯 I doesn’t get more epic than that! I could watch a 2 hour interview with these 2!
Adam R Actually, it would be more epic if John was with them.
And what about this? It would've been great!! but Paul was "exiled" in Scotland by then....
www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/jimi-hendrix-sought-paul-mccartney-for-supergroup-with-miles-davis-65515/
What was Keith Richards doing - baking cookies??
I said it once and I'll say it again: This man is full of stories. His grandchildren are so lucky. They can hear his stories whenever they want.
Macca is the only person who can tell a story about Hendrix, Clapton and Townsend and not be name-dropping 😃
Paulie having showing a picture of his grandchildren readily available in his smartphone is the most grandpa thing I've ever seen a grandpa do.
I love that Stella and his other kids never put their kids on social media then Grandad Paul shows them to the world hahaha
Yeah but one picture that you can't even see that clearly isn't too bad I don't think.
Aww....Ioved seeing him being so proud of his grandkids. Cute.
I Know!😀 💘 Sir Paul McCartney. God Bless.
Paul McCartney is a living legend! It’s like watching Mozart or DaVinci, we’re lucky we have him to share his peace and love 💕💕💕
Super Sonico - A living idiot!
@@dylanalan2890
Clueless much?
Dylan alan Thanks for talking about yourself but you know what we aren’t interested!
The best part is that he is just a great guy. I’ve been a fan since 1964 as a little kid and my dad let me stay up to watch them on Sullivan Because he thought it was a once in a lifetime thing. He compared Yesterday the song to Mozart. I was only 5 but that statement always stuck with me.
@@tdoggo7614 Your dad also sounds like a great guy. :)
Aww bless him. Stephen is all over the place in this.
The fact he manages to cover it and carry on sitting next to someone who clearly has such a massive impact on him is testament to just how good he is.
Carry on Mr Colbert.
Even in the Ed Sullivan Theater
in earlier segment w/ mccartney, colbert brings up mccartney losing his mom at 14 yrs old. mccartney says "eventually I found music ... and John" (who lost his mom at 17).
colbert has been (heartbreakingly) open about losing his dad and two brothers in a plane crash ... and how much that (per colbert) "messed with" his head.
#reasons
It's AMAZING to me how HUGE Sir Paul McCartney is and ALWAYS seems to be the MOST humble guy. ❤
He really does, don't know how he does it but he does.
“Strawberry Pills Forever.” 😂
Joan Rosseel BRUH IM DECEASED 😂😂😂😭😭😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
OMG ☠
2:55 Stephen Colbert can die happy now knowing that he made Paul McCartney genuinely laugh.
No, he made old "Sir Paul" (William) laugh.
Oh my god when he laughs he literally looks so young and sweet my heart😩💕
Great sense of humor. He's just a brilliant guy.
Re: Watching Hendrix: "I was there, Clapton was there, Townsend was there" HOLY FUCK!!! I'm amazed that they were able to fit that much musical genius into the Saville Theater!
and that's what they called "Tuesday" :)
George Harrison was there too

Imagine being one of Sir Paul McCartney's Grandkids... ❤😭🎶
Well, we kinda are all family of his. And of rocks, water, trees, etc. I mean, a cosmic bang occured a while back. Everything, us included came out of that.
@@bakkermaarten007 including Chapman too then
When you see Stephen acting like he did here, you really get a grip of when he really loves a guest on the show. Starstruck is the mildest expression for this, but beyond lovely to see! :-)
Lol
I think the "Gran on the Run" Is a perfect complement for "Grandude" and could actually fly!!
Paul’s music since 2001 is massively, underrated! Check out “Chaos and Creation”! Paul is a phenomenon.
great album, great comment.
Second this!
Memory Almost Full and New also have some jams!
Those stories with all those legendary names must be overwhelming to colbert... Poor Stephen
MC cartney is the live half of the greatest influence on music in our time. John and Paul changed it all. Also never forget the additional impact of George Harrison. Amen.
It’s teeming buckets of rain outside so after a long night shift I get to curl up under the duvet with Paul McCartney and Stephen, who could ask for more! 😁💖💖💖
My husband is Grandude to our grandchildren as well and got this book as soon as it came out to read to them.
And how is it ???
see my comment! my dad too! i thought he was the only one. :)
Colbert couldn't take that load at 1:46, Clapton, hendrix, and other legends, he had to geek out
Lovely interview, and of course McCartney is a living legend, etc... but I love his current music, from 2001 up until now he has been delivering some amazing albums, and he barely ever play those songs or talk about them. I wish someone would once in a while interview him about the last 15 years of his musical career.
Nataniel Costard totally agree with you!
Indeed, he never stopped making beautiful music.
Nataniel Costard Chaos and Creation is amazing.
Correction: THE living legend.
Wings was a weird and fun band too that, as is usually the case, got way too much crap. If they can now drag out stuff like the pina colada song and make it famous from blockbusters, you'd think someone could mention anything but the beatles to this dude in at least one interview.
I officially still love my first crush, Paul McCartney!❤️
@Jackie Beans you really know how to pick a crush...talent, charisma, charm, humor, looks, health, stamina, grace, humility, and best of all, longevity. At 13, you picked out a legend.
ditto. i was 10 & totally in love in 1963.💖
It is such a treat to see an icon be so comfortable in his own skin, so aware of his place in the world, and have graceful humility. .
Might be one of the few times I’ve seen Stephen truly star struck by his guest. He was so clearly effected by Paul; loved it. ☺️
PAUL is simply the best! He makes the World Great Again!
This was a wonderful little interview, and I'd love to see more like it. Apart from the gray hair, one forgets (or at least I do) how old Paul is, because he still seems cooler and more worldly than pop culture heroes one-third his age. Telling stories about seeing Hendrix play the Beatles latest music with Clapton, Townsend and who knows who else in tow. I cannot imagine... !
I am deeply humbled and overwhelmed with joy this holiday season and I hope to fill the entire world with light as love as much as possible! I can not imagine a world without her majesty the Queen, or Sir Paul McCartney! I really hope I die before they do because I simply do not want to live in a world that is absent of these precious historic deeply profoundly loved and cherished simply astounding beings. I cried my eyes out thinking about that this holiday!
i just love the way he talks and i love his smile he is unique a really unique and lovely person n i love you paul you are a gift to the planet
Literally best interview of 2019 I'm just surprised when he introduced him he didn't say Sir paul McCartney
Very, very timeless, funny and charismatic Soul!!! I love he is humble and genius!!!! thank you to be here with us!!!!
I had a crish on him when I was 12! Paul was the "cute" one. John was the "smart" one. George was the "spiritual" one & Ringo was THE drummer! What a time it was!
I had that same crush on Paul and I was only 11. I think of Ringo as the nice but forlorn guy wandering around in the scene from "A Hard Days Night" as the song "This Boy" plays. I later loved all of them in their own quirky and individual ways and we all grew up together, enjoying the amazing songs and transformations along the way.
I was a George fan. But my daughter was raised on Beatle music and l just took her to see him live in San Diego 3rd row center. I wanted her to have the experience of seeing this living legend in the flesh and singing Hey Jude together. It was just awesome beyond belief. 3 solid hours. And he’s 77!
I reas this as ”and Ringo was.......... The drummer!”
Great interview... funny book names at the end BUT (and I'm definitely being a Beatles geek here), Help and All You Need Is Love are Lennon songs :)
I saw McCartney a few years ago... brought my 5 year old daughter (who is a Beatles fanatic...the first music she ever heard was Abbey Road start to finish. She was 5 days old. I held her in my arms and sang along with the entire album)..he played for 2.5 hours and was absolutely phenomenal. Many of my greatest memories involve listening to the Beatles either with my dad or my daughters or on my own. I truly enjoyed this interview. Well done Stephen.
I took my boyfriend of 2 years to a Wings concert, 4th row... yes, I paid! He got so jealous of my screaming for Paul, and staring at Paul, who I have loved my whole life, that he left the concert and then broke up with me! 😂
What? I'd have done the same as you, hahah. I mean, it's Paul!
+Joan Rosseel
~ Sounds like a "good riddance" story if ever there was one.
Oh, no! Agree with Spammy it was for the best. :)
sounds like you dodged a bullet with that one. 😊
oh well, his loss, eh?
What is it about the Fab Four that any time I see them I want to cry of joy? I imagine it’s been the same for a lot of people through generations now. I mean, I was born way past their time together and yet I still see very young people in his concerts singing along the Beatles songs.
1:40 even a simple whistle is musical for him. ❤️
My Heart is FULL❕Sir Paul is so gracefully authentic and warm ... The audience was thunderously appropriate in its honoring of this Master's Treasure.
What a momentary respite from whatever the :%€ is going on in the U.S. transitional ZEITGEIST shift❕👎 Thank you Stephen & GranDude❗👍✌
Perfect title for him. The Ultimate Grand Dude. He has a great and real sense of humor.

What is it like to be his grand children.. Wow, what an amazing guy.. Love him ❤
Sir. Paul and that smile on his face
I have loved Paul McCartney since they first came to America, I am 69 now and he is still my favorite singer. Love you Paul.
But it was NOT "Sir Paul" (William) that arrived to America with Fab four, it was the real Paul McCartney.
William didn't join Beatles until late 1966 "as an already set up affair".
Have just ordered 2 copies for our local library. Thanks, Grandude!
Oh, and one for myself, of course.
thanks for these interviews they made me so happy!
Doing his best to be polite at the end there
Yes l was thinking he didn't want his age rubbed in. Grand Dude sounds very youthful. Stephens titles did not.
''Yesterday'' is so ubiquitous to American Culture, in the 1970's, Mad Magazine published a ''musical'' Star Trek parody, and penned a song that was to be sung to the tune of ''Yesterday''. it was the first pop song I learned after leaving my abusive piano teacher, the Beatles saved a little boy from hating music forever. Thank You Sir Paul, George, John and Ringo.
I can watch hours of Paul, so many great stories.
There's a face we don't often see with Colbert. Just blown away by the special personal story he got to hear and be part of, shared in the story sharing that is so special with moments like these. Wow. I just adore this show for sharing these things with the rest of us !!
Ok, going to dream of such a moment as McCartney laughing at Clapton hiding from Hendrix
One of my top favorite artists. My whole life I wanted to meet him. 4 years ago a friend from NBC flew me in to see him I was front row, and he was only 4ft. Away when he sat at the piano, and I felt he and I sang hey Jude together. Shut up I got the pictures!
America fell in love with loving the Beatles. McCartney exhibited amazing talent in not only helping to generate that love in the first place but not failing it ever since.
He still looks 16 and 70 at the same time...
Paul Mccartney is a living musical legend. He's as beautiful now as he was back in the day! Loving the name of the book..."Hey Grandude", how cool is that! Thanks for sharing him with us, Stephen Colbert! Shout out from Jamaica 🇯🇲
3:35 - Ah sweet... Anyone can see that Paul is really enthusiastic about writing the book... A truly creative person, with passion...
Humble genius🙌
A fantastic interview 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Paul is just the best. He always has a great attitude. He's still cool, kind and honest. I love him so much and listen to The Beatles channel on Siriusxm everyday! Love u, Paul. ❤ Uncle Albert is my favorite song.
The Beatles were fantastic. What they accomplished at their ages in the 60's was absolutely AMAZING!!!!
It’s absolutely adorable that he has his grandkids on his phone case ❤️
Mesmerising to watch him!
My father/daughter dance at my wedding, we danced to Hey Jude. I have to get this book for my Dad from my son now.
That sweet movie, “Yesterday”, will introduce a whole new generation to the beautiful brilliance that was/is The Beetles. 💕
Him being so proud of his grandkids is the best part of His Life .
Such warmth
I look forward to getting his book. Again, great interview, I didn't want it to end.
Grand on the Run is actually a great title! That could be a sequel, easily, as active as Sir Paul is.
I'm sure Sir Paul is thinking along the same lines.
I was able to see the Beatles 3 times in Toronto. The greatest thrill in my 74 years!

It's baffling that there is even one. Maybe they don't like being reminded of their age :-) I still remember when Paul was rumored dead, and when the Beatles broke up. Worst of all, I'm still considerably younger than him, and he still looks considerably better than me - not fair!
@@pdoylemi I'm 21 and he looks younger than me!
@@pdoylemi Its not that baffling. I would expect most of them, if not all of them, are accidental clicks. Think about all the people with touch screen devices, including phones. I accidentally click things all the time on touch screen devices. Even on mouse controlled computers, people lose track where the cursor is and click randomly. There really needs to be a confirmation before a like or dislike is registered.

This is so much fun!! That book looks cool and fun.
What a magnificent person and representative of all that is good in music. Great Hendrix story

people underestimating how extraordinary that Jimi Hendrix story was.
Paul, Clapton and townshend just casually hanging out, watching Jimi Hendrix play, on one of the most historical stages in the world, Saville Theatre where the likes of The Beatles, both as a group and individually, Nirvana, Cream, Bee Gee, etc. played.

Yeah, he's still a great looking guy for his age!
I watched all four segments of the interview... non-stop! I just couldn't stop watching... and I thought the recommended titles for future books were absolutely hilarious. What a GREAT way to end a fantastic interview!!
I disagree.
It was tacky and insulting and demeaning to a living legend.
@@fenderstratguy I've revisited the final segment and closely watched Paul McCartney's reaction to the Colbert's 'suggested titles' for sequel's to the book. McCartney seemed genuinely amused by the titles and artwork. That's when it came to me... that the most enjoyable part of seeing McCartney these days is the lack of 'professional arrogance' that he displays.
Hence, I can't thank you enough for your reply. It has truly helped reinforce my support for my original comment!
