Growing up in Phx, I always know this tunnel for 2 things. 1. Holding your breath and making a wish. 2. Almost every day on the traffic report hearing "crash in the tunnel..."
Honestly the main reason now is because cars have auto lights. Cars lights end up turning on so it looks like they are breaking (which they aren't), but it causes a chain reaction and others start to break thinking the first cars are breaking. I see it every single time in there. It's pretty funny and frustrating at the same time. It never fails that going in there the traffic will slow down.
Wow! I remember the days of cars without DRLs but to see it in video is strange. When you see SO FEW cars on the road AND none of them have their lights on during the day, times were sure different 33 years ago!
Well....... I have lived in town my whole life. Over 50 years. I have never walked on the park either. Just haven't. There is one day a year that the Margaret Hance deck park is busy.
The biggest cause is idiots who tailgate. I'm sure we've all see that line of 4 or 5 cars off the side because they were all following way too closely, and the first car needed to brake, and they all bumped into each other. 3 second rule! (5 in rain)

Terminal 4 at the airport opened in August 1990 too, as did Superstition Springs Mall and the 60 freeway out to Power opened that summer too. It was a big year with lots of big hair. Hottest on record but it also snowed. I was 6 but just old enough to remember how awesome 1990 was. Nobody cares. There, saved someone the effort.
I was there on opening day. I have driven through it thousands of times and only had 1 accident. And it was nothing more then a hit and run tiny fender bender.
Now only druggies live in the deck park, maintenance is non existent on the black hole, pigeons roost in every nook and cranny. The tunnel is ridiculous.
Totally, the 4,777,000 people in the Phoenix metro area should all just be riding on surface streets today, wouldn't that be great? And the wonders NOT completing that stretch of the 10 would have done for our economy! Yeah, huge waste of money that we certainly never recouped.

I remember when I was lil driving with my parents I would try to hold my breath ,when going in the tunnel
now the infrastructure cant withstand the new traffic, and goes to show how much these on ramps and exits east of the tunnel fuck up traffic so much

Yep. And in my city, they raised it above the ground and decimated a park and a Black neighborhood to build it.
Back went Phoenix was special and an amazing place. Now its a copy of LA and its suburbs, crime and over crowding.
