- “Limooye Shiraz”(Lemons from Shiraz) is an old famous Persian song by Gholam-Ali Ravanbakhsh (Quchan, 1935 - Tehran, 1979), an Iranian singer and actor of the 1950s and 1960s. The lyrics of this song are written by Parviz Vakili, who was one of the pioneers of modern songwriting in Iran, especially because of the innovative imagery he used in his lyrics. The music of “Limooye Shiraz” is by Sooren Alexander Mayelian, an Assyrian-Iranian composer who was especially famous for his creation of new, folkloric pieces.
Sima Bina, a prominent singer of Iranian folk music, has sung "Cho Morghe Shab Khandi" (You Sang like a Night Bird) with the original melody. The music is introduced as a Kurdish folk song of North Khorasan in Iran.
The exact recording date for “Limooye Shiraz” is not known, but most definitely, it goes back to the period before 1973, the year Ravanbakhsh gradually began to withdraw from artistic activities.
Ravanbakhsh had also performed a song called "Limoo Pestoon" (Breast Like Lemon) before “Limooye Shiraz”. The music for both songs was the same, but the arrangement of the music and the lyrics were different. “Limoo Pestoon”’s lyrics are closer to folk songs.
«لیموی شیراز» ترانه‌ای است با صدای غلامعلی روانبخش (قوچان، ۱۳۱۴ - تهران، ۱۳۵۷)، خواننده و هنرپیشه دهه‌های ۱۳۳۰ و ۱۳۴۰. شعر این ترانه سروده پرویز وکیلی است که از او، به ویژه به دلیل تصویرپردازی‌های نوآورانه‌اش، به عنوان یکی از پیشگامان ترانه‌سرایی نو در ایران نام می‌برند. آهنگ «لیموی شیراز» اثر سورن الکساندر مایلیان، آهنگساز شهیر آشوری ایرانی است که بخصوص بخاطر توانایی‌اش در خلق آثار فولکلوریک جدید شهرت داشت.
سیما بینا، خواننده توانای ترانه‌های محلی ایرانی، ترانه‌ای دارد به نام «چو مرغ شب خواندی» که ملودی آن مشابه ملودی «لیموی شیراز» است. او این ملودی را به عنوان موسیقی کردی شمال خراسان معرفی کرده است.
تاریخ ضبط «لیموی شیراز» روشن نیست و به هر حال باید به پیش از سال ۱۳۵۲ باز‌گردد که روانبخش به تدریج از فعالیت‌های هنری کناره گرفت. روانبخش پیش از «لیموی شیراز» ترانه‌ای به نام «لیمو پستون» را خوانده بود. آهنگ هر دو ترانه یکی بودند، اما تنظیم آهنگ و اشعار آن با هم فرق داشتند. شعر «لیمو پستون» به ترانه‌های محلی نزدیک‌تر است.
