I've always been fascinated with Poland's history. Imagine how much of a powerhouse in Europe Poland could've been if the Poland Lithuanian Commonwealth still existed and didn't go through the hardships of the 1600's and 1700's. I'm also from Owen Sound Ontario and in WW2 the small town was chosen by the Polish government in exile and the Canadian government as the location of a training camp where a group of Polish officers would train a group of Polish immigrants from Canada, the USA and a few from Cuba to serve in the Polish army in Europe. The soldiers trained here took part in and some died at the Battle of Monte Cassino. My grandparents live a short walk from the remains of the shooting range where the troops practised.

I've always been fascinated with Poland's history. Imagine how much of a powerhouse in Europe Poland could've been if the Poland Lithuanian Commonwealth still existed and didn't go through the hardships of the 1600's and 1700's.
I'm also from Owen Sound Ontario and in WW2 the small town was chosen by the Polish government in exile and the Canadian government as the location of a training camp where a group of Polish officers would train a group of Polish immigrants from Canada, the USA and a few from Cuba to serve in the Polish army in Europe. The soldiers trained here took part in and some died at the Battle of Monte Cassino. My grandparents live a short walk from the remains of the shooting range where the troops practised.

Germany and Poland are almost ethnically pure, but that's due to ethnic cleansing, which was all the rage throughout modern European countries. The few refugees that have set up shop in Germany are but a minority, and cannot seriously be characterized as an invading force, for obvious reasons.

History teaches us that in reality, Poland had to wait until 1918 to "reappear" on the maps of Europe.

Even Italy was still under Austrian rule, but dragged by the enthusiasm for the great changes that were hoped for, the patriotic songs praising liberation multiplied.
The most popular was precisely that of Mameli, a real incitement to insurrection.
In what will later become the Italian anthem, the verse is found: "the Eagle of Austria has already lost its feathers, already the blood of Italy and the Polish blood drank with the Cossack but the heart burned them".
Austria of the Habsburgs (of which the double-headed eagle was the imperial symbol) was in decline (the swords sold are the mercenary troops with which the ranks of the imperial army were full) and Mameli summons the people one last time italics to give the coup de grace to the Austrian domination with a parallelism with Poland. Between 1772 and 1795, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, together with Russia (the "Cossack"), invaded Poland. But the blood of the two oppressed peoples, the Italian and the Polish, can turn into poison through the uprising against the foreign oppressor.
