- Lata Mangeshkar fainted while recording a song composed by music director Naushad. This incident happened in 1954 when Lata Mangeshkar was rehearsing with Naushad for a song of the movie Amar (1954) starring Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. In this video we tell the viewer why Lata Mangeshkar fainted and also inform the viewers about an incident that happened between Lata Mangeshkar and Naushad when Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first song with the music director. For the record, Lata Mangeshkar and Naushad worked in Andaz (1949) for the first time, when Naushad took Lata Mangeshkar's voice to go on screen for actress Nargis. Prior to working with Lata Mangeshkar, Naushad usually recorded female vocals with Shamshad Begum.

Rahulji my best wishes to u for giving us so many anecdotes about the music; music directors and so many other things about that golden music era of fiftees.I dont know where from u collect these data's but really speaking I appreciate yr rendering of these happenings.There was a time when I very eagerly used to follow Raju Bhartan of his very authentic revelations of music world of bollywood of fiftees.Can u shed some light as what happened between Naushad &Majrooh that after Andaz Majrooh stopped working with Naushad.

Love your narration!!! 🙌🏻 The energy with which you narrate as if you go back to that era while narrating the incident!! 👌🏻 Once, Dilip Kumar Saahab had made a remark on Lata jis Urdu tallaffuz saying that she was a Maharashtrian & her Urdu would have a taste of "daalbhaat". It was then that she decided to take a formal training in Urdu. Years later when Lata ji reminded Dilip saab of this incident, he had replied that you proved me wrong! That's dedication towards one's work!

Lata jee was finding it very difficult to do that harkat on YE sama... and it took her 19 takes to finally get the harkat done.. Good that someone has shared this story..New singers should try thhis song as it is very difficult to do this harkat on that tempo

What an insight into the past days Naushad was trulty a perfectionist and a hard task master, just imagine he got Lata to sing the song 18 times before he got somewhat satisfied. Continuously singing the same song for 18 times in a row, alongwith the Bombay humidity must have drained Lata Mangeshkar completely , which led to hier fainting while recording.

I don't understand why this song "Tere Sadke Balam Na Kar Koi Gham" from Amar(1954) required 18 retakes.
I cannot figure out what is so difficult about this song. Lataji should have been able to sing it in her sleep. The song "Tod Diya Dil Mera" from Andaz(1949) was a much more difficult song. And so was "Uthaye ja unke sitam", from Andaz(1949). But, perhaps Naushad was trying to get a note or inflection in a phrase perfectly. More about retakes below.
I understand why Naushad wanted to take an Urdu talaffuz test from Lataji before he would commit to having her as a singer in his team. Like you said, he was a perfectionist. And its a good thing that he did, because Lataji didn't have to prove to anybody after that. Certainly not to Khemchand Prakash who was directing Lataji to sing in Mahal(1949) that same year at Bombay Talkies. She spoke and wrote Urdu fluently. Don't forget that Lataji had a genius IQ and an eidetic memory.
I understand why the lack of A.C. would have made her faint. Who designs a studio without AC in Bombay? And substitutes it with a fan? Of course, the whirring of the fan will be caught on the recording and would have to be turned off. Perhaps Lataji wasn't feeling well that day, but if that was the case, she would have excused herself.
About retakes, I am aware that singers are sometimes finicky and voluntarily retake a rehearsal even when the MD okays it, to get a note or phrase just right. For example, Rafi saab voluntarily took 27 retakes of Din Dhal Jaye in Guide(1965), even when MD S D Burman okayed it, because he wasn't getting "aise mein kisko kaun manaye" exactly the way he wanted it. He was a perfectionist.
ADDENDUM
Hi Rahoul, I realized that I need to add a primer on film production technology to explain Naushad sahab’s actions in in1949 in ANDAZ(1949) and his actions in 1954 in AMAR (1954)and how the changeover in technology in 1952 affected his behavior.
Work in progress- means that my edits are not ready to be viewed.
Hi Rahoul, I just remembered. You will find this fascinating, interesting, and very relevant. There was something about the Lataji song in ANDAZ(1949) “Tod Diya Dil Mera” picturized on Nargis, that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Aur phir yaad aya. You will notice that Lataji sings the song in a baser voice than her usual natural voice. She is trying to imitate Noor Jehan’s voice, intentionally, and upon request from Naushad sahab, who wanted her to sound like mme Noor Jehan. Why? Nobody knows. When your director asks you to do something, and especially if you are twenty, you don’t question it, you just do it. He told her “aap apne saheli ko yaad kar ke gana”, she tells in an interview, and she understood what he meant.
You see, to Lataji, Mme Noor Jehan was a mentor, and in time became her very good friend. After Noor Jehan returned to Pakistan, Lataji used to telephone her daily, primarily to inquire about Master Ghulam Haider, who was ailing and also in Pakistan. Notice how these stories are interlinked. Master Ghulam Haider, composer and director, was Lataji’s guru at Bombay Talkies, who had advised her to find her own natural voice and to not imitate Noor Jehan. In reality, Lataji was not imitating Noor Jehan, she can also sing like Noor Jehan.
At the time, the prevalent and influential female singers in Hindi Cinema were Suraiya, Shamshad Begum, and Noor Jehan, who had distinct singing voices but they were all alto, and Lata Mangeshkar was/is a soprano. The alto trio had everybody convinced that that was the norm rather than the exception for females, and people loved them. Even today, Shamshad Begum’s songs are considered charming. But Lataji is really a mezzo-soprano which means that she can extend her range into the baser region, if necessary.
And, that’s what she did with “Tod Diya Dil Mera” in ANDAZ(1949). So, people sometimes misunderstand why Lataji used to sing like a mezzo earlier in her career - because that’s what the directors wanted and that’s what the marketplace liked. Even in her signature song, “Aayega Aane Wala” from MAHAL(1949), she goes into the mezzo range when she sings words that aspirate - which have the letter H like “hai”. Notice that her “hai” sounds like the Urdu “heh” instead of the Hindi “high”. Actually, the Hindi “hai” sounds more like the Urdu “hai” nowadays, depending on whether your Hindi is really Khari-boli or Hindustani as in the Lataji song “Baghon Mein Bahaar Hai “ from ARADHANA(1969).😊😊😊

@@rahjaji Yes. It’s most probably in the interview with Kamran Shahid. Lataji was open with him the most. He came across as very friendly. And I have seen Lataji to be most comfortable with him. They (the Pakistanis) have split that into separate pieces,, for marketing purposes probably, so you’ll have to sit through several interviews. Also, what Naushad actually told her was to “Tum apni Saheli ko yaad kar ke gaana “ and Lata understood what he meant. Also, read the readers’ comments.
