if anyone from Argentina is reading this, please tell me - how is the Argentina team in the Rugby World Cup being received by the Argentinian public and the media? Is there hype behind the team?
The reason I ask is I've never seen the Argentine rugby crowd get so passionate like they did here - it looks like how the amazing Argentinian fans acted as you won the FIFA World Cup. Also, I think the rugby team plays the game in a very Argentinian way: passionate, aggressive, skillful and wily!
I'm from Scotland and I think like most rugby fans we want to see more rugby nations be consistently strong and challenge the traditionally stronger rugby nations. For this to happen, it usually needs the support of the public so watching the scenes from the fans in this match was great!
Hey Mate, Argie here, there's a little more support than in prior world cups for sure, but it is nowhere near the likes of football. Unfortunately, rugby in Argentina is still 100% amateur at all levels, other than the sevens ironically, so we are doing quite well for a small group of professionals playing in Europe. Losing our super rugby franchise was huge as there were plans to have one or two more before 2030 before COVID-19. Now it seems we are getting one back for the 2026 season. :)

it is still polarized, I would say the majority of the people do not care, the second care and are supporting them and last there are the people who still hate rugbiers who are a small minority right now, if los pumas want rugby to get popular they have to win the world cup, there is no other option, if they win the next year the profesional league gets created and people would feel proud of playing rugby, because right now the majority of the people in Argentina see rugbiers as losers the majority of people do not respect them and even ashame anyone who genuinely likes rugby

Shout-out to Izak van Heerden ( my Afrikaans master at Durban High School in1965). He was sent to Argentina by S A Rugby Union to raise the Pumas to International standard. Izak would be very satisfied & proud of the Pumas.

The Pumas nickname is the result of an error made by Carl Kohler, a journalist for the then Die Transvaler newspaper in South Africa, while following the team during their first overseas tour ever - to Southern Africa (to Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and South Africa) in 1965. He tried to devise a catchy nickname for the team similar to existing international team nicknames such as All Blacks, Springboks, and Wallabies. He asked Isak van Heerden, the then coach of the Natal Rugby team who was asked by the SARB to assist with the tour, for ideas. They saw a picture of a type of lion with spots on the UAR crest. Kohler was aware that the Americas had jaguars and pumas, and as he was under pressure to submit his article, made a guess and called them the Pumas, instead of the actual jaguar. The mistake stuck, and was eventually adopted by the Argentines themselves (although the UAR crest continued to depict a jaguar[8] until 2023).
I did not know this, but it illustrates how deep the relationship is with the Pumas.

@@sebasvega5782Estas equivocado. Todos los clubes de rugby de Argentina son amateurs, y es justamente de esos clubes amateurs que salen los jugadores que conforman los Pumas. Claro está que la mayoría juegan en Europa, pero para llegar a Europa, primero se destacaron en los clubes amateurs de Argentina ya que es ésta nuestra base de donde salen nuestros jugadores. Estos jugadores recién juegan de manera profesional cuando llegan a Europa o cuando ya están dentro de los pumas

No hay que traducir literalmente porque se pierde el significado de frases coloquiales. La traducción sería algo así:
"oooh, come on, Argentina, put some hustle in it, that we'll win".
O "oooh, come on, Argentina, put some guts, that we'll win".
O "oooh,come on, Argentina, grow a pair, that we'll win"

Cualquiera de las tres frases expresan lo que queremos decir, en cambio, lo de "put some balls" no significa eso en inglés, e incluso, en deporte, se puede confundir con una petición de que se pongan balones en algún sitio.

En la epoca de los 70's y primordialmente en los 80's, los pumas eran un equipazo y le ganaban a todos, solo les falto a los All blacks, que empataron. En el 87 cuando se hizo oficial el profesionalismo, el rugby argentino siguio siendo mega amateur y cayo en picada, el resto de los equipos del hemisferio sur y el norte se nos escaparon mucho.
Soñemos con la final, y sino, en el peor de los casos tendremos revancha con Inglaterra por el tercer puesto. Pero que lindo seria una final contra ellos.
