  • In this video, we look at how Klaus Meine of the band Scorpions has held up vocally over a long and amazing career! Let's watch now!
Klaus Meine - Scorpions - Singers Then And Now
The goal of this series is not to make fun of people, to show a picture of them in their youth and then mock them in their older age.
The goal is to showcase how voices have sustained over time. And who has taken care of their voices and who hasn't, and what was the result. And what could've been done differently for those that did not take care of the voices.
Could they have sustained their voices? And can they be rehabilitated now? Some singers (few) are just gifted with great genes and have been able to sustain their voices on their own. This is a rare exception. The rest of us mere mortals have to work at it, just like we have to work at our voices to get range, pitch, power, control, longevity, stamina, and so forth.
In addition, it's just really cool to check out the incredible careers of these artists and marvel at their singing.
So today, we are looking at none other than Mr. Klaus Meine!

Imo he’s one of the best for longevity. The dudes 73 years old after all. Like wow. The Scorpions are 50 years old so they’ve done countless tours, concerts and miles - Ultimate Respect for Klaus - Legend.

Saw Scorpions in 2018. and Klaus was amazing on vocals, he really nailed it! One of the rare singers who could sing that well in that age.

Klaus might be 70 years old and i still think his longevity is among the best. 2015-2019 his live perfomances are still very good. Love that guy to bits and he+scorpions have given so much to rock genre

I think Klaus held up very good. He started singing in late 60s and never stopped working !!!! He had vocal trauma, came back from it and singing 40 years after that!!! They started tuning down like 10 years ago and thats completely ok. Most important he has the same tone, he doesnt sound like old man. And If anybody wants to hear why Klaus had vocal trauma - listen to their song Virgin killer.

Yes, he has admitted to intentionally practice "screaming" to rough up his voice, thinking it wasn't hard rock enough. Obviously learned his lesson, but it's amazing that he really does still have it! Or I should say, has it again. 🤘

It's not that extreme as it seems with the chosen A/B comparison. Klaus still has power and his golden voice. He lost some higher registers, but that's normal due to constant touring and age. He still holds up well and his voice is in good shape!
Saw them 2012 and 2015 live, both great shows! And there are videos from more current shows which prove that.
By the way, they will do a Vegas residency in March and will kick off their new world tour there. 😎

He’s 73……He was still sounding Tip top in the early 2000s… However, when I saw him in Atlanta around 2010… There was a noticeable difference… But he still sounds better than most singers out there… He’s been singing since the 1960s scorpions first album was 1972 50 years ago. For an elderly man who has screaming his throat out for 50 years, I would say he sounds better than pretty good… He has just aged

I'm 51 now and have listened to the Scorps since I was 12. Even when signing in a lowered key, I love the sound of Klaus' voice. And man, Matthias and Rudolf on guitar??? SO good.

  • @aleccopile

For a 73-year-old, Klaus is still doing alright 👏. Yeah, maybe he's lost a little power, but he's still better than most rock singers his age. Obviously Mick Jagger is older and still on the road, but Klaus Meine has to do more difficult material vocally. The Scorpions have worked their asses off. They've really been touring every year for 50 years. They must be in the top 10 bands with the most gigs.

I've alway thought of Klaus Meine as a German version of Dio, with a dash of Stephen Wright.
He had an instantly recognisable voice back in the day for sure. The Scorpions have secured their place in the history of hard rock, and sold millions. I don't know why they are still doing this.

One of my favorite bands. Saw them in late 80s in Buffalo, NY Monsters of Rock tour. They were the best sounding live band of the 12 that played including Metallica. Also saw them in 2018 in Phoenix. Klause sounds much better than your first "now"clips portrays but he has lost some of the Highs he had.. Pitch was spot on just not the high high notes and I still have clips on my photo from the concert to prove it... Love this band

In my opinion, post vocal surgery, his voice is actually clearer than it was previously, 1990’s He had a natural raspiness to his voice, I feel it’s ever clearer now. I heard Scorpions in Las Vegas in April, 2024, priceless!

I had the chance to listen to Scorpions in Athens in 2018 and Klaus's voice was actually better than the "Now" I saw here... No matter how Klaus Meine’s voice has evolved through the years, what a great band anyway, right? Man, songwriting-wise they’re just flawless! 🙏🙇‍♂️
By the way, Ken, please consider doing Graham Bonnet. His natural voice is exceptionally powerful, though I don’t think his vocal technique is very refined. Still, he’s charismatic and smart. To me he remains one of the most original rock vocalists ever. I would love to see a “then and now” video by you about him. Thank you!

    • @mantelmann13
      @mantelmann13 2 года назад +1

I think that the Scorpions are highly overrated and just had the benefit of an early start. Boring songs, questionable personalities (if you believe the media) and that "business" vibe around them. Milk the cow as long as possible. I wouldn't watch them for free. Not even in their prime. But that's just my personal opinion.

    • @DrZorrow
      @DrZorrow 2 года назад +2

@@mantelmann13, well, a matter of taste, I guess. The older I get, the more I enjoy simpler stuff, provided it’s just well crafted. Yes, it does get formulaic sometimes, but still prefer that to artificially intricate prog music and endless self-indulging solos. That’s why I find Dream Theater overwhelmingly boring. I like The Scorpions better. But well, to each their own, right? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I love the Scorpions. I have for years. What some people don't understand, a lot of these guys are in their 70's. They have been doing this for 40-50 years or more. People age, vocal cords age. The first thing you notice is they can't reach the high notes like they used to. I love Klaus and I think he still sounds amazing for his age.

I like that " I wouldn't be super wow'd by it" lol. Very little impresses me now, I know too much ha ha. I will say I had the pleasure of spending about 10 days on the road with the Scorpions. I believe it was 1988. It was Savage Amusement Tour. Kip Winger was opening, awesome guy. My friend Peter was their road manager. I went to Tacoma Dome, Seattle WA and Peter said come thru Cali with us. Well, I certainly wasn't turning that down lol. Next was Cow Palace in San Francisco, Orange County after etc. They were all awesome, great energy. Kip was a baby and doing the ballet thing. Some great shows. I think Klaus still sounds good considering or at least to general public he would. We are way too picky because we know too much. Ann Wilson sounds so screamed to me last few years, doesn't hold notes anymore and her voice is gritty and weighted, but hell rockers seem to like it better.

Klaus was/is fantastic! Scorpions 🦂 are our ( wife, daughter, and I) favorite band of all time. Especially their clasic stuff with Uli Jon Roth. Can’t believe the Scorpions 🦂 just released another new studio album just this past couple of weeks. Can’t wait to hear it.
Interested in your take on Barry Gibb of the BeeGees. Doing a then/now since he is back to singing again. Years of singing in that high falsetto must take so much training and preparation.

Klaus is an all time great. He's done it all. He's 73 now. In his prime he was incredible, one of the best and he had that band rockin'. Singers have one of the only jobs where criticism of performance due to age is bashed unmercifully. They are like Boxers, who might be a close second, not all of them know when to hang it up. We've seen it all our life however. When singers get older, they lose what they had in their youth. It almost seems like a natural thing. Can you run like you did when you were 21 @ 60? Can you see the same now or do you have to wear glasses to read? How's your hair doing? Can Magic Johnson play basketball as good today as he did @25? Does he suck now because he can't? I'm not disagreeing that there are ways to keep your voice in good shape as one ages, but for the greater majority, age catches up to all of them (us). We should simply appreciate what they did and be proud that we witnessed it first hand. Give 'em a break, this is their passion, their career, their life and it's hard to age gracefully on stage in front of everyone. Love the analysis Ken!

I saw them in 2009 and it was a cool show. then I went back and watched one of there 80's concerts like world wide live and you are talking about some of the best rock vocals of all time. Just Amazing!!!! The scorpions always showed up to play a great show. Unlike Aerosmith and Van Halen, Iron Maiden who had up and down careers the scorpions maintained such a high level for soooo long. If they don't hold the record for performing the most live rock concerts I would be surprised

How about an episode about Bob Catley of Magnum. He becomes 75 this year, he is still recording, still touring (if possible) and I don't think that he lost very much of his voice. And what make it even more interesting: In an interview he claimed that he doesn't do any vocal exercises! :-)

I have trouble believing that anyone in their 70s is going to be th same as they were in their 20's & on, regardless of how they take care of themselves. I believe what your saying Ken that vocal health can be preserved, absolutely, but only to an extent. There's going to be some changes, there has to be. No matter what occupation or skillset, you just don't see people in their 70s competing against those in 30s or 40s. Golf is th closest I can think of where people in their 60s still can do quite well. Anyway, if you do Glen Hughes in th future ( ik you luv him) there's some great footage of him singing live w/Myles Kennedy, from I think 2016. He sounded really great & you could tell Myles was starstruck by him🍻

I saw Scorpions in 2007, the first and last time they came to Mumbai. Even on that show, then drummer James Kottak was giving more than significant backup on the high parts. And Klaus was singing well within himself, though not as much as here. Bad Boys Running Wild was second on the setlist, I think, and some in the pretty sparse crowd actually asked him to get louder until they realized this was gonna be it.
It was still a fun show. He was incredibly lively and funny. But you could tell he was off his best.

My first big concert. Saw them in the 80s, the 90s and the 2ks. Always good. One thing that was very noticeable when I saw them. They sounded pretty damn close to how the album sounds. Alot of bands couldnt.
Hard to believe the Scorpions formed before i was born and im in my 50s. Klaus is 74 in a couple months. So I can cut him a lot of slack. particularly since I know he has been known for so many years of of giving it his all. Rudy still looks to be in great shape. Klaus though is looking a bit weak as you you say Ken.

Great video Ken! He has a distinct voice. I looked for Christian bands that had not just the sound, but the vocalist sound as well......the closest a came was a band called Creed (before 'that' Creed), that also happened to be German.

Even tho he didnt sing that many of the old songs anymore, i would love a then and now comparison of steve perry. he did some live stuff the last couple of years and sang some classic journey ballads.

Age catches up with us all . My all time vocalists cant really do it any more but who can do anything like they could when they were 21 , I know I cant lol .
Part of the attraction for me when I was part of the NWOBHM was Klaus' accent , also loved udo and Michale Kiske for the same reasons.
You have already covered some of my favourite vocalists in Joe Lynn Turner, Steve Scott Soto, Lou gramm, Sebastian bach & David Coverdale .
However I would love to see you do more on my favourite vocalists from Bands such as Thunder , Magnum (Bob Catley is my all time favourite ) , XTC , Hard Rain , Breaking Point, Kingdom come & BNL !
Great video , love as always !

Very interesting series this. For his age I think Klaus does fine. Way better than Jon Bon Jovi. A lot of songs are now in lower keys. He did lose some range and agility. But I would go and see them anyway if they ever came to my area.
If we can request something I request to see a takedown on Bobby Kimball.

I think he is 75 now. He was still really good about 10 years ago. It sounds like it's time to hang up the gloves now. He had an amazing voice for a really long time.

Ahh yes! Ze Scorpions! I tend to agree with you Ken, that Klaus Meine's voice is definitely not like it was back in the day. Yet he did carve out quite a niche in the hard rock (& perhaps heavy metal) genre & in my heart ad well! As always, I appreciate your integrous & qualified critiques of vocalists from then & now. Keep up the excellent work my friend! Rock on & peace out!

He's still doing amazing for his age, most singers have to drop quite a bit as they get older, Klaus has barely dropped at all compared. I think the pandemic may have been an issue for him, due to the lack of touring etc, because he seems to be slowly improving from his early after pandemic live performances. I'm no professional singer but if there's music playing I'm always singing, I had a break of a couple of years when my kids were small though and that really set my range back. :)

I think first and second was post mixed or something, mayby that's half playback, that "now" stuff was 100% live, he was tired, but still this songs are hard to sing for random human, his voice its still clear and amaizing, greet from Poland Ken🤘

I think he lost a bit over the last 10 years, but for his age he still sings really well, especially compared to a lot of other singers his age. And in the 70s, 80s and 90s he was undoubtably one of the best rock singers of all time.

I think the sharpening from the past was a bit too harsh, so it is missing now. But honestly if they still sing live, I can live with that.
