My youngest son is living in a DHS property because he and his partner are unable to get into the property market. They have tried for months to have issues with thier property fixed, but nothing happens. They found out the other day there is one person to cover the area where they live. DHS has a lot to answer for because they refuse to act on complaints from private property owners who have DHS tenants next door like I do,and the cops aren't any better. I have lived in a DHS property, and I kept it neat and tidy so I know what it's like to deal with them when something needs repairs. Those houses sitting empty makes my blood boil given the housing situation we have. Watching from Victoria.
With the amount of homelessness and rental stress... its a crime to have these homes abandoned and not looked after for people that need them.

Tim, you should raise an invoice for the Department, then send the link to this video to show that they haven't been maintaining their properties. Maybe they're not aware that there is a housing shortage in Australia. Thank you for stepping up to the plate for your community! very much appreciated.
I am a widow . I was quoted more per month than I spend in food and utilities to have someone maintain my yard. I have to do a section at a time, but I try. Point is laziness or unwillingness isn't always the reason someone's yard is not well kept. Seniors, widows, disabled and limited income, we struggle .
Nice to see you bought a flail mower, I saw you tried one a few weeks back, I'd like to think my comments on them a couple of months ago inspired you!
FAC's (houso) wont do anything these days until they redo the inside . They are Hopeless at maintaining properties or fixing them up .
They get companies to do a tender then they pick the lowest ones to do the work which in most cases is dodgy as . Quick enough to take the rent not quick enough to fix things

Now all you need is some sort of an attachment that picks up the grass right after it is cut. Ever see large farming equipment? Maybe like a small trailer pulling a large vacuum behind you... like a train.. haha JK

We're in a social housing crisis and soooo many houses are sitting abandoned that could be renovated and inhabited.

As someone on Disability Assistance & have been homeless who waited 20yrs for Housing Placement it is heartbreaking seeing all these houses vacant & neglected,
especially knowing I am a lucky one & there are still so many people needing a home who would look after it.
Nice work with the new machine...what a beast!

I absolutely agree with you. So many people need housing these days. I know so many people who live in their cars etc. It really bad that money comes before the everyday Australian family.

What a huge difference. As you said, the new machine laid down massive amounts of shredded grass but it also is handling stuff you've been working on a solution for, for a long time. Love how nice the edging and trimming looked on the paving.
The new machine certainly performed well in the front. Looking forward to seeing you tackle the back with it.

You’re the best!
That’s my old house, I moved out of there over 2 years ago and it’s still empty. It had termite damage, had mice problem, mould everywhere, asbestos, the whole house needs to be demolished. Housing refused to fix any of these issues and we got a transfer under medical grounds, we cleaned it out before we left but I think there’s been people squatting in there from the flats across the road from the shops up the road.
Pretty sure in a previous blog, the neighbour's mentioned the previous tenants moving out.

That machine is a beast! I’d be complaining too, especially if there’s red-belly blacks around. Whether the place is up for demolition, or not, it’s not safe for the other residents. Good job, Tim 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Empty Housing Commission houses. In the area I grew up in, they emptied almost all of them over the course of a couple of years, then knocked them all down and built new suburbs.... For about a decade before that time, any house that needed major repairs remained empty once the people moved on.

You mentioned that the cicadas were disrupting the audio to some degree. I am just glad that you don't play music while you are talking. The cicadas barely make it through to us as we watch. I think it is safe to say that the flail mower is a success. I along with your other subscribers can't wait to see the full video of this site in the coming days (or weeks).
BTW, where is your videographer? Was he there for this?

It’s not worth throwing money at the housing commission houses to make them habitable Tim, they’ll be due for demolition which is ridiculous with the housing crisis we are currently in. Good on you for helping out, tell the neighbours to put in their requests for clean up in writing and make sure they mention the snakes and the danger they present as danger to public safety they cannot ignore. Some places in USA there are people that bring their sheep to your property to eat the tall grass.

It’s crazy to me that there are so many abandoned houses too. I’ve heard stories of families living in tents in holiday parks, where both parents have full time jobs, because there is no affordable houses to rent. The average cost of rent on the GC now is about $900 pw for a 4 bedroom house. 😮
Does pm mean per week?! OMG. My house payment is only $550 per month on 2.5 acres and 1836 sf up and down.
Hmm, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. You caught me out, mate. Didn't try and look today. Sand everywhere though. Tax more do less. Here we have road cleaners sent out before leaves even fall then they wonder why road drains are blocked at this time of year. Still, by this time next week, I should have a fully serviced motor with a new DAB receiver. Just need something for RJM now 😂

Funny that the counsel that doesn't maintain those properties is the same one that's up your butt about maintaining your nature strip. I think we have the same city counsel here in the States. That was amazing how the flail mower just knocks it down. You weren't kidding about how deep that is. It's going to be awesome when you're done!

The outside of the home looks in good condition. It has potential, maybe someone who flips home (investor) can remodel it and sell it for a good price (?). Can't wait to see Tim's amazing makeover.

@@deborahgallagher-vu5hl The State Government is either going to redevelop the block, as they are doing in lots of estates. Or it is scheduled for a refurb before a new family is moved in.
@@scottwilliam6141 That's promising. How long is the develop going to take? People need housing now. Here in the USA home prices are skyrocketing, people just can't afford them. Rents are out of peoples incomes and they are on the verge of homelessness. Three and four generations are living in one house. I hope things get better soon.
Don’t know if it applies to this particular case but a lot of these older housing commission homes have asbestos and it is extremely expensive to rectify. They really need knocking down and to be rebuilt but again - money.

It's called NSW Housing Dept. Tim! A department f the NSW Govt. that needs a rocket up it's A#$$.
I live in Govt. housing in SA which is managed by individual Housing Associations, and we the tenants are responsible for maintaining the properties with the Associations conducting regular inspections. If the Associations fail in their management of the portfolio, they get the properties taken away from them and then they go to court to pay for any shortcomings.

Given the recent investigation of the Guardian into homelessness in Australia and the lack of public housing, I'm shocked to see your insights about how many houses are left unused. Is it worth a special hashtag to bring those to the front and allow somebody to write about it?

@@timthelawnmowerman I've written to the reporter at the Guardian - maybe he can make a story out of it. His reports on early deaths in homeless have already started being discussed in parliament.

I can answer the housing issue with them left empty. they use to be maintained and fully run by the government.These homes are on larger old lots, they were signed to a independent organization to take over the care and what not inspections, accounts and maintenance some years back. The contract basically is that if someone is in there it must be maintained, on top of that if the place is vacant for 10y of being untended then the land is signed over to this organization under the conditions of development and that one of the houses on the developed lot is placed on the the department of housing rental assistance scheme. the old house have issues pipes roofs etc so are left abandoned for that long time till signed for development.
I am in WA and this is something that happened probably close to 20y now 15y at the least, It was on the news that it was rolling to all state's eventually. so if its a large lot this is likely the reason. there listed for sub division and development and its just a waiting for that to happen, the other homes on the lot are sold as private.
This is what happened my way, Id be rather sure this would be what you might be seeing. its mostly units now this way.
Homeswest sold of so many, and don't maintain what they have. And that doesn't include the houses they sold to long-term tenants.
