It's interesting that many people talk about "destroying" or "ridding" themselves of something that never inherently seemed to exist in the first place. A lot to think about!
I think is because of self-rejection, this believe that if you reject a part of yourself you'll be better. I'm trying to see what needs are behind that rejection. The ego is me and I love myself, I love my rejection. If I notice I still reject I, I give space for that rejection. At least that is worked to me at conceptual level. At experiencial level I'm a human experiencing life!!! hallelujah motherf*ckers!!! XD. I like to take it not so serious XD.
Eric, I love your profound analogy of the ego to a mirage. Whoa! The implications of this is truly astounding. That quite literally means nothing ever "happens" in reality. Nothing is born and nothing dies. The suffering comes when we believe that there can be a separate person from reality.
For me Ego death was experiencing Nirvana/Annihilation on LSD. Can also happen in meditation. After that you know the foundation of reality is basically nothing and that nothing is also everything. And also this is unlimited potential. But yes, you still have a basic ego to navigate in the world.
Ego = identification with body = personality. Enlightenment = destruction of ego. After enlightenment you are still aware. Aware of what the body does or what happens to it,. But there is no more identification with it. Its not right to say that some sort of ego or personality remains. What remains is more appropriately called an identity.

Im actually not sure what enlightenment is. However, i woke up 3 months ago and today i am at a point where I can see right through my ego. Ego fears being alone, ego is all desires. I am just silently witnessing my ego do its thing. Desire and not desire is simply egoic. I just am. And its heaven. Weird... I am having a daily experience of consciousness that is separste from my ego and its blissful. Is this enlightenment? Or awakening Even asking this question is an egoic desire 😅🤣 I cant say I... because any form of identification isnt true. Even saying I AM, identification. This is what it is: Just that The only thing 'I' really want to do is breathe. Maybe eat. Drink water. Thats all u need. Anything else is a privelege beyond words...

Being present is just looking...that is being aware. Enlightenment is seeing. The difference is the difference between looking and seeing.

@@Aikanarokun What effort is needed to be aware? If the eyes are open and you are conscious, you have no choice but to see (and it is without effort).
