The more interesting thing is how the egg stealer somehow manages to sneak past both dogs since toby and abby still spend the nights in the permaculture.

Morgan said that he found her outside of her fence three times but i'm guessing only once with the camera on. It is way to short of a clip to account any intellegence over instinct and likely what you describe of her wanting to convey information in such a way to her owner is just anthropomorphism. It still would be very nice to see the complete footage of her trip down.

I’d suggest maybe Abby having a companion dog for the top part of the farm, a dog that will want to stay with the cattle and in turn will make her want to stay too.
I live on a farm and have raised a lot of dogs. Abby picked up a scent and followed it. That’s what she is suppose to do. Any foreign scent should be investigated and she did that. She just needs to learn , to return to place, once done.
I watched a video on the Girlswithdogs channel, who bathed a 9 year old Akbash/Maremma mix sheep dog. Looked a lot like Tobydog. Beautiful pups you have!

It’s a collar similar to her e-collar except you draw a boundary in the app, and when she gets close to that boundary it beeps to give a warning and if she tries to cross it she gets a correction. The boundary can be almost any shape so it’s very customizable.
I love the acknowledgment of the filming process, it always tickles me thinking how many times the person had to go back and forth to set the shot, film the shot, retrieve the shot, possibly repeat - all for us to enjoy a fly on the wall perspective.
Isn't Abby just doing what you want her to do, but considers the whole farm her responsibility to monitor? maybe that's what you really need. Nose to the ground, occasionally licking because she is identifying a smell, and staying where she knows you go. She might be doing more than you even planned.
My thoughts also! I thought maybe giving her access to the cattle lane so she can come down towards the barn, eventually training her to a perimeter. Some LSG aren’t fenced in and know their boundaries, maybe she’ll be one of them?
Agree. Dogs have different responsibilities built in. Abbies' may be the whole farm. Large farms have multiple dogs, some stay with their animals, others protect perimeters.

My family owned a generational farm in rural VA until 2001 when my dad sold it. I'm reliving my youth and love of the farming way of life through you. So my experience is more with young foals, not calves so much, I think the same logic likely applies. Spend a lot of time sitting on the ground near baby B, don't really focus on her too much and just kind zen out. Give her time and she'll very very likely get curious and approach you. I really can't stress how much it helps to get down on their level. Never walk directly towards her, but instead move in diagonals towards her so she feels like she can get away, and also just let her approach you for the first several months of her life. With Abby getting through the fence, I'd first try adding a string of wire between the two she slipped between and making sure it's hot enough to zap her if she tries to go through it. Otherwise, get one of those invisible fence collars for her.
Not sure if I’m the only person that thinks this, but I think your eggs disappearing could be the result of snakes eating them. Would be hard to see them on game cameras. They also usually regurgitate the egg shells
He has no snakes in his area large enough to eat duck eggs. Maybe bantam silky eggs but duck eggs are several times larger. Then there is the fact that geese, ducks and chickens will attack and kill snakes making his farm an unwelcome environment. My guess is something in the weasel family, small, secretive and easily overlooked and capable.

Morgan, pls ask your vet about the safety of Abbey consuming hair/fur from the cattle. Would hate for her to get a blockage and need surgery. It's $$$ and the blockage can be deadly.
Yeah, she reminds me of a general farm guard dog that I know, that has his territory "bubble" on a arount 1,5 mile radius around the farm. Good thing she is fixed tho, that other dog fathered several litters.
Hi Morgan, if im allowed i would want to give you a small tip for dogs in their teen age who struggle in life/ testing the limits which helped me a lot. But please dont think i want to offend you. English isnt my native language so im a little bit scared that what i write/ how i write it may sound unpolite or different to what i mean. But im going to try because maybe the tip ive got will help you too. Stop petting "Teen-Abby" so much in general and please here attention everytime she wants to. You dont have to show her continuously that you love her at that age, she knows you love her (you can see that nearly every time she comes close to you/ approaches you). But dont get me wrong i dont say you shouldnt show her love anymore, just not so often. What you want is (i assume :) ) a independent guard dog who knows her dutys and boundaries. And if she did something wrong, tell/ show her that she did someting wrong and normaly continue your work. Dont pet her 2/5 minutes later but also dont hold a grudge, just behave normal. I thought several times if i should write this because i think you treat Abby a little bit too "small child like" as i did with my dog, maybe this will help you. Thank you for your videos, you doing your daily chores on the farm is my favorite thing to watch while eating dinner 😃
Don’t worry that was good. You weren’t in the least bit offensive. Great advice. Abby definitely seeks more attention than Toby, but they grew up in totally different situations. Toby was alone most of the time and never had to fight for attention or food with other dogs around. Abby came directly from her mother and siblings right to here with another dog so she kept all those behaviors. I think your idea is a good way to deal with her. Just work as normal around her and don’t give her affection every time she looks for it, especially if she is aggressively seeking it. Giving attention in that state just rewards it. It’s funny but, you almost have to do the opposite than if she was a pet. She would be a great pet though.
Abbie and her escape antics make me smile. You may have to invest in a long range Invisible Dog Fence. Abbie is one smart dog to figure out how to climb fences and hurl through the electric fence.
Yup, that's probably the only way. And putting up a different type of fence next to the wire fence would basically make all the work making that fence be for nothing 😅
We had to combine fence types: Invisible Fence to keep the working dogs restricted to our property, and moveable pasture electric fence to confine the livestock. Working dogs would still brave the Invisible Fence shock if wolves or coyotes took off with a duck, goose or chicken.... And eventually returned with the retrieved livestock and would wait by the gate to be let back in. 😂

Abby has always been an escape artist. Remember how she'd jump out of her pen when she first arrived on the farm ? How she'd jump over the fence separating her from the birds when they were in the Hoop Coop ? Yeah, this girl is unstoppable.
Best way to train her , is to put her on long lease near her shelter with food and water for 7 - 8 hours a day for few weeks and electrify the fence where she escapes
I´d say you need a meshed fence on the outside of the pasture, like the one, she wandered down to get to her fence-exit. Maybe not with wooden posts, but just with a mesh to prevent her from leaving the farm.

Surprisingly, it's a lot more than you think because working is not the same as playing fetch and in the case of a LGD it's a full time job all on their own.

Abby treats the cows just like she treats the geese & ducks. The difference is the cows accept her wanting to be close & interact while the feathered critters don’t.

Abbey may be the boss lady in the top pastures but she only wants to come home. Morgan you raised her with Toby dog. If you wanted to seperate them it should have been done earlier. Abbey will continue to find a way back to Toby and you. That is her training and she has not forgotten. While Toby is chill, Abbey has become the ALPHA dog. She sees her responsibility to guard the whole farm and her humans that she adores.
Abby Dog might be bored with how chill the cows are compared to the birds. Abby also seems to know her way around the farm. I think she's a great perimeter guard.
Aww bless Abby... that little Hairy Houdini! One thing I did notice... Was that an egg or a mushroom at @18:10 on the ground? Maybe chasing a predator or an egg thief perhaps... Might also be where she got that infection on an old wire or thorn or something. On the plus side, she won't be jumping through the fence with that flashlight on
As others said, it seemed like she was following a scent. It also looks like she did a circuit around the perimeter of half the farm. That might not be a coincidence. If she is looking to find suspicious critters that should not be on the farm though, it could be dangerous for her. Good luck, I hope you find an easy and effective answer.
Haha, leave it to Abby to find some new mischief to engage in. She might just need a bit more shelter, and things to do when the cows are so chill since she is used to all the honking and activity
Abby dog must feel very isolated when kept constantly in the pastures with the cows. She knows she's far away from Toby, the cats, and, most of all, you and where you spend most of your time. She does need to visit the home area as much as possible so she feels part of the family.
She's a work dog, is in her DNA do feel "confortable' away from the owner and around the livestock. Its Just a matter of time and training. If you see livesdog Guardian dogs who work with cattle that grazzle in open fields, the stay away from humans like day...weeks, just following the herd.
Working alone with a herd may be a breed trait, but not all dogs within a breed have the same dispositions. Abby has always seemed more socially inclined.
Her staring down at the farm from the pasture is not her looking over her farm, it is her longing to be back with her family, Toby, cats and people. Worst decision ever to separate her from the lower part of the farm and her familiar surroundings.
When giving a dog a command/correction, say their name then a command. Abby, leave it. Don’t have a conversation. She’s working. I think you talk enough that Abbey knows it is not all directed at her. Speak her name using a consistent tone for commands and she will learn that is when you mean business. No sing-song voice, be firm. Save the conversation for break time.
Morgan, I don't know if this would help, but we did the following with our dog (border collie/newfoundlander mix) on a fenceless property. My husband and I each morning and at the end of the day took our dog and walked the perimeter without stopping. We reinforced our property boundry with her and we praised her for "securing the perimeter". We had almost an acre with roads on 3 sides. Eventhough we had lots of neighbours walking past and cars, she always stayed on our property when she was outside with us.
When you made the video showing you making the fence I knew there would be problems with it eventually. Although time consuming and expensive, I think the fence around the bird yard and permaculture orchard would be something you'd want given the fact that your cows, chickens, and Abby are all in that pasture.
maybe feed her by the cows, close the leak and after some time build in a passage where Toby and Abby can go through but not cow or ducks, so there can go to the cows and down how they want. ( like 20 cm or more fence, a gap where dogs can go throu but above fence again) i just remembered...a dog door does it as well....omg
I believe that Morgan doesn’t want Abby out with the ducks and geese while they free range in the permaculture orchard. So giving her a passageway defeats the purpose of moving her up top to guard the chickens (who are enclosed in poultry netting) and the cattle.
It's been quite a while since I checked in to your channel. I have to say that you now LOOK like a farmer...leaner, more weatherbeaten, and developing a sun squint. Looks good on you.
The way I see it, she is a very smart dog that needs a lot of mental stimulation. The easiest solution is to do regular walks with her to new places. Let her expend her curious and exploratory energy. And also patch the fence so that she doesn't phase through it. Her POV looks like something I would do if I am tired of the small apartment and streets that I am grew up in and I would explore new places sometimes to the chagrin of my parents. I gotta admit, your audience enjoys watching Abby confuse you 😅
I think that would not be wise. because she may think it's ok to continue exploring by herself, and could run into a wild animal. Her running loose should be discouraged.

Abby was looking for you and perhaps Toby. Toby and Abby may be different but she definitely is bonded to Toby. I hope she can visit Toby, you and the farm some of the day. She cracks me up. Definitely my spirit animal. Abby seems very exposed to the heat up there. Toby has several shady areas to rest during the day. Abby only has that little shelter. Perhaps the forest area is a bit cooler for her?
You need to consider getting either goats or sheep to eat down all of the overgrown grass around the bird areas. There might be snakes hiding in the tall grass that are eating the eggs.
She's looking for the egg thief. She knows one is out there. Her hunting that area leaves her scent on the foliage. It's lets predators know shes there. How's your frog pond?
My favorite thing about how you treat Abby and Toby is much like a parent and their two very different children. I admire how you are finding their individual strengths while making sure they are safe. With Abby finding a way out reminds me of a parent working really hard to set something up safely and then their toddler coming in and saying NOPE. I'm glad that Abby found that loophole. That way you can keep her safer better.

Abby is social. She doesn't have a livestock guardian dog's personality. She craves company--yours and Toby's--and while she is drawn to interact with the cattle, being left up there, from her perspective, constitutes exile from where the real action of the farm is. When she sits at the fence line doing what you have called "looking over the farm," what she's really doing is trying to figure out when she's going to be included in "real" life again. Now she's figured out how to make that happen.
100% agree with this. Abby doesn't want to stay up there alone, plain and simple. I also thought the exact same thing about her "looking over the farm" - more like, how do I get out of here to be back with everyone else.
I have learned that from the ages of a few days old to around 6 months, calves go thought this fear period. I just ignore them and continue just hanging with the herd.
I just LOVE ABby. She is a bit of a rebel. Toby is the A student who is a bit boring and always held up as an example while Abby is communicative and loves to do things differently. Which gets her into trouble. She seems to crave affection and I think up there on that hill all by herself won't be the right thing for her. A few hours, sure. But she needs stimulation and interaction. She has bonded with the cattle, but Toby, you, and all the other animals are her pack, too. She looked like she was on a mission. Might be good to take both dogs into the woods from time to time to let them mark the territory and to get to know the smells of, other predators. That's a whole new book for you. Rebel Aby explores the forest. Rebel Aby gets into trouble. Rebel Aby charms the cows. Aby's night alone on the pasture...I mean even I could write a few chapters there. ;-)

Glad you're allowing some pond time, I know the birds are appreciative being how much they love it. Morgan do you have raccoons anywhere near the farm, I ask because they can't resist eggs. Toby is such a mellow guy, but don't try and get too close if your a predator, that's when Toby let's them know he's not messing around,lol. I'm sure farmer-dog trainers would have good ideas - but I'm thinking something with a collar with sound - but I don't really know how that would work because she did get over the higher fence. It's a puzzle - Abby is little puzzle.

So Abby can groom the cattle but Morgan can't (except for a couple). That was adorable footage!!!

Owls can go after duck eggs. Other birds of prey can also.

But im going to try because maybe the tip ive got will help you too. Stop petting "Teen-Abby" so much in general and please here attention everytime she wants to. You dont have to show her continuously that you love her at that age, she knows you love her (you can see that nearly every time she comes close to you/ approaches you). But dont get me wrong i dont say you shouldnt show her love anymore, just not so often. What you want is (i assume :) ) a independent guard dog who knows her dutys and boundaries. And if she did something wrong, tell/ show her that she did someting wrong and normaly continue your work. Dont pet her 2/5 minutes later but also dont hold a grudge, just behave normal. I thought several times if i should write this because i think you treat Abby a little bit too "small child like" as i did with my dog, maybe this will help you.

Don’t worry that was good. You weren’t in the least bit offensive. Great advice. Abby definitely seeks more attention than Toby, but they grew up in totally different situations. Toby was alone most of the time and never had to fight for attention or food with other dogs around. Abby came directly from her mother and siblings right to here with another dog so she kept all those behaviors. I think your idea is a good way to deal with her. Just work as normal around her and don’t give her affection every time she looks for it, especially if she is aggressively seeking it. Giving attention in that state just rewards it. It’s funny but, you almost have to do the opposite than if she was a pet. She would be a great pet though.

Abbie and her escape antics make me smile. You may have to invest in a long range Invisible Dog Fence. Abbie is one smart dog to figure out how to climb fences and hurl through the electric fence.
Yup, that's probably the only way. And putting up a different type of fence next to the wire fence would basically make all the work making that fence be for nothing 😅
We had to combine fence types:
Invisible Fence to keep the working dogs restricted to our property, and moveable pasture electric fence to confine the livestock.
Working dogs would still brave the Invisible Fence shock if wolves or coyotes took off with a duck, goose or chicken.... And eventually returned with the retrieved livestock and would wait by the gate to be let back in.

Abby has always been an escape artist. Remember how she'd jump out of her pen when she first arrived on the farm ? How she'd jump over the fence separating her from the birds when they were in the Hoop Coop ? Yeah, this girl is unstoppable.
Best way to train her , is to put her on long lease near her shelter with food and water for 7 - 8 hours a day for few weeks
and electrify the fence where she escapes
I´d say you need a meshed fence on the outside of the pasture, like the one, she wandered down to get to her fence-exit. Maybe not with wooden posts, but just with a mesh to prevent her from leaving the farm.

Lol I didn't think Abby would be happy being so far away. She is a much more social dog than Toby. If she can see action, she wants to be there. Abby and Toby are decidedly different on the social needs hierarchy. Lolol. Short of a serious physical fence, I doubt you will be able to keep Abby so far away. She's just socially needy.

Surprisingly, it's a lot more than you think because working is not the same as playing fetch and in the case of a LGD it's a full time job all on their own.

Abbey may be the boss lady in the top pastures but she only wants to come home. Morgan you raised her with Toby dog. If you wanted to seperate them it should have been done earlier.
Abbey will continue to find a way back to Toby and you. That is her training and she has not forgotten.
While Toby is chill, Abbey has become the ALPHA dog. She sees her responsibility to guard the whole farm and her humans that she adores.
Abby Dog might be bored with how chill the cows are compared to the birds. Abby also seems to know her way around the farm. I think she's a great perimeter guard.
It always surprises me when Abby grooms the cattle.

Aww bless Abby... that little Hairy Houdini! One thing I did notice... Was that an egg or a mushroom at @18:10 on the ground? Maybe chasing a predator or an egg thief perhaps... Might also be where she got that infection on an old wire or thorn or something. On the plus side, she won't be jumping through the fence with that flashlight on
As others said, it seemed like she was following a scent. It also looks like she did a circuit around the perimeter of half the farm. That might not be a coincidence. If she is looking to find suspicious critters that should not be on the farm though, it could be dangerous for her. Good luck, I hope you find an easy and effective answer.

Abby dog must feel very isolated when kept constantly in the pastures with the cows. She knows she's far away from Toby, the cats, and, most of all, you and where you spend most of your time. She does need to visit the home area as much as possible so she feels part of the family.

I disagree with this. She’s not a family pet, she has a job.
She's a work dog, is in her DNA do feel "confortable' away from the owner and around the livestock. Its Just a matter of time and training. If you see livesdog Guardian dogs who work with cattle that grazzle in open fields, the stay away from humans like day...weeks, just following the herd.
Working alone with a herd may be a breed trait, but not all dogs within a breed have the same dispositions. Abby has always seemed more socially inclined.
Her staring down at the farm from the pasture is not her looking over her farm, it is her longing to be back with her family, Toby, cats and people. Worst decision ever to separate her from the lower part of the farm and her familiar surroundings.
When giving a dog a command/correction, say their name then a command. Abby, leave it. Don’t have a conversation. She’s working. I think you talk enough that Abbey knows it is not all directed at her. Speak her name using a consistent tone for commands and she will learn that is when you mean business. No sing-song voice, be firm. Save the conversation for break time.

Morgan, I don't know if this would help, but we did the following with our dog (border collie/newfoundlander mix) on a fenceless property. My husband and I each morning and at the end of the day took our dog and walked the perimeter without stopping. We reinforced our property boundry with her and we praised her for "securing the perimeter". We had almost an acre with roads on 3 sides. Eventhough we had lots of neighbours walking past and cars, she always stayed on our property when she was outside with us.

When you made the video showing you making the fence I knew there would be problems with it eventually. Although time consuming and expensive, I think the fence around the bird yard and permaculture orchard would be something you'd want given the fact that your cows, chickens, and Abby are all in that pasture.
maybe feed her by the cows, close the leak and after some time build in a passage where Toby and Abby can go through but not cow or ducks, so there can go to the cows and down how they want. ( like 20 cm or more fence, a gap where dogs can go throu but above fence again)

I believe that Morgan doesn’t want Abby out with the ducks and geese while they free range in the permaculture orchard. So giving her a passageway defeats the purpose of moving her up top to guard the chickens (who are enclosed in poultry netting) and the cattle.

It's been quite a while since I checked in to your channel. I have to say that you now LOOK like a farmer...leaner, more weatherbeaten, and developing a sun squint. Looks good on you.
The way I see it, she is a very smart dog that needs a lot of mental stimulation.
The easiest solution is to do regular walks with her to new places. Let her expend her curious and exploratory energy. And also patch the fence so that she doesn't phase through it.
Her POV looks like something I would do if I am tired of the small apartment and streets that I am grew up in and I would explore new places sometimes to the chagrin of my parents.
I gotta admit, your audience enjoys watching Abby confuse you 😅
I think that would not be wise. because she may think it's ok to continue exploring by herself, and could run into a wild animal. Her running loose should be discouraged.

Abby seems very exposed to the heat up there. Toby has several shady areas to rest during the day. Abby only has that little shelter. Perhaps the forest area is a bit cooler for her?
You need to consider getting either goats or sheep to eat down all of the overgrown grass around the bird areas. There might be snakes hiding in the tall grass that are eating the eggs.
She's looking for the egg thief. She knows one is out there. Her hunting that area leaves her scent on the foliage. It's lets predators know shes there. How's your frog pond?
My favorite thing about how you treat Abby and Toby is much like a parent and their two very different children. I admire how you are finding their individual strengths while making sure they are safe. With Abby finding a way out reminds me of a parent working really hard to set something up safely and then their toddler coming in and saying NOPE. I'm glad that Abby found that loophole. That way you can keep her safer better.

Abby is social. She doesn't have a livestock guardian dog's personality. She craves company--yours and Toby's--and while she is drawn to interact with the cattle, being left up there, from her perspective, constitutes exile from where the real action of the farm is. When she sits at the fence line doing what you have called "looking over the farm," what she's really doing is trying to figure out when she's going to be included in "real" life again. Now she's figured out how to make that happen.

I have learned that from the ages of a few days old to around 6 months, calves go thought this fear period. I just ignore them and continue just hanging with the herd.
I just LOVE ABby. She is a bit of a rebel. Toby is the A student who is a bit boring and always held up as an example while Abby is communicative and loves to do things differently. Which gets her into trouble. She seems to crave affection and I think up there on that hill all by herself won't be the right thing for her. A few hours, sure. But she needs stimulation and interaction. She has bonded with the cattle, but Toby, you, and all the other animals are her pack, too. She looked like she was on a mission. Might be good to take both dogs into the woods from time to time to let them mark the territory and to get to know the smells of, other predators. That's a whole new book for you. Rebel Aby explores the forest. Rebel Aby gets into trouble. Rebel Aby charms the cows. Aby's night alone on the pasture...I mean even I could write a few chapters there. ;-)

I would suggest adding more fence wires to make the gaps in the fence much narrower, and maybe making the fence much taller.
Maybe when Abby slips through the fence into the wooded shaded area is a lot cooler than the sun soaked pasture after all that fur coat must be hot as hades. If Abby can slip through the fence so can the egg thieves.
Also Morgan looking forward to purchasing Toby Dog book for my grandchildren & grand nieces & nephews.

Glad you're allowing some pond time, I know the birds are appreciative being how much they love it. Morgan do you have raccoons anywhere near the farm, I ask because they can't resist eggs. Toby is such a mellow guy, but don't try and get too close if your a predator, that's when Toby let's them know he's not messing around,lol. I'm sure farmer-dog trainers would have good ideas - but I'm thinking something with a collar with sound - but I don't really know how that would work because she did get over the higher fence. It's a puzzle - Abby is little puzzle.
I think she hates being left alone way up with the cows. Trying to get to you is probably how she cut her leg.
