I love that you made this video. I'm right there with you, Kevin is the greatest death metal drummer out there and just a great guy on top of it. I used to do merch/tech for Daath and watching him every night was an absolute treat. He was on point every single night, full speed. I did a couple Daath tours with you so, while I have the chance here, thanks for dragging me all over Europe and the US all those years ago, Rob! I became a fan of Chimaira on those tours and still play your records pretty regularly today.
Alex "grind" Pelletier of Despised icon is a lot like him, always utilizing The whole kit with tons of feel, blazing speed, and complementing the song super well...and just underrated as well
@@RobArnoldWorld Theyre pretty heavy but anything from "the ills of modern man" album is great. i bet you guys played a show or 2 with them over the years as well!!
If Chimaira return, I hope its Andols. But if not, Kevin. Then Ricky. Austin is super tight, but he overplays everything. Too many flashy cymbal parts etc and it totally detracts from what made Chimaira great - the simple groove and interlocked feel of the drums and guitar.
The Imperial Ambition is a song on dissent which has some of the most powerful shockingly heavy drumming ever. I remember jamming along to that in my bedroom circa 2006.
Great video, Rob! Love this type of content! It's creative! For me, my first two introductions to Kevin were first that famous Slayer audition session and second the fact that I realized he was in Chimaira's self-titled album haha! I really love how intense Kevin was playing with Slayer...like if I ever want to see a drummer playing as if he is so fucking angry, and is a psychopath who wants to take someone's head, I'd go watch that video haha. I've been fan of Chimaira since 2007 when my friend in high school in Iran and I heared Resurrection for the first time, and we were blown away. But somehow I missed out on the fact that Kevin played on the album before. When I realized that, that dude who plays drums on that album is the same intense dude from Slayer video, I HAD TO check that album even more seriously. I think for me, he was the first drummer that somehow made me believe that drummers could also "riff". That "call and respond" thing that he does in the bridge of Save Ourselves is what I call a drummer "riffing"..because it's as if he's playing two things at the same time...there is a beat that he is playing and a guitar/bass riff on it, and then the measures in between, it feels like he's playing something extra (those kicks) to respond to the call of that guitar/bass riff. I'm a huge fan of Kevin and he is one of my go-to drummers and one of my faves. As soon as I hear his name mentioned somehow, I know I have to go check that thing out. Just recently was watching an Ola Englund video and he mentioned that for his band Feared, whenever he has new ideas, the first person to share with is Kevin...and I was like "holy shit, another band that Kevin was in and I missed? haha", so I jumped and ran and immediately listened to Feared's albums. Amazing cymbals work in this video by Kevin, btw!
Right on Sid! I agree with everything you said, and I remember Kevin putting emphasis on those "in between" kicks and stuff. He said it was Vinnie Paul that inspired his thinking on those things!🤘
I had Kevins DVD available in the early 2000s- it had double bass tips and his slayer audition tapes...simply amazing ..his playing on the Dying Fetus albums was groovy and brutal
You got me with the intro. Was hoping for some sweet death metal drumming in rural Texas. I also thought for sure the video was going to be his audition for Slayer, but this was awesome as well. One of my favorite drummers of all time, and of course he plays on my favorite Chimaira and SFU record 🤘
Rob I hate when RUclips takes you off of my rotation so quick. Anyway glad I can just search back out and catch up. Enjoyed this vid and yes he killed that track!!!!
I LOVE this clip!! I never get tired of watching it. Very masterful accent work and part construction. Definitely not a “typical” extreme metal drum sound. Very slept on band as well. There’s a bunch of footage of Kevin playing Chimaira and a few other bands songs on RUclips. Maybe reacting to some of those would be cool!
I met Kevin once at a Chimaira show on August 21st, 2004. My friend and I got there early. We were hanging out behind Harpos in Detroit as people were taking equipment in. I spotted this shorter dude with longer blond-ish/light-brown hair and stopped him. When I used to smoke cigarettes I preferred full-flavor, but all I had was a pack of my Dad's shitty Alpines which tastes like your smoking a pack of strong mints, in the worst way. That nicotine though... had to have it. But, I wanted a full-flavor cigarette so I stopped this guy and asked him if he would trade me cigarettes and I explained to him why. He agreed, and we traded fair and square. I gave him a shitty Alpine, and he gave me a full-flavored Basic. As soon as he lit the cigarette he made a nasty facial expression and said, "Well now I know why you wanted to trade". Me, laughing, asked if he wanted to trade back. He said, "no it's fine dude, nicotine is nicotine". I said, "Cool. So you in a band or something?" He said, "Yeah, I'm the new drummer for Chimaira". My heart started racing a bit at that moment because at that time, that was the band I was there to see, and I hadn't realized they picked up a new drummer. This was just before I really started to get into death-metal. I said, "Dude that is awesome! What's your favorite song to play by them?" He said, "Well, I'd have to say 'Power Trip' because it's a faster, groovy type song. I like playing the faster stuff." I said, "Very cool, love that song." He said, "Yeah man, well I used to play drums for a band called Dying Fetus, you heard of them?" I said, "Yeah of course, although I haven't listened to much of the music." He said, "All good man, I'm just used to that kind of drumming; blast-beats all over the place." I said, "Fuck yeah, that's cool." Soon after finishing the cigarettes we parted ways and he went to set up and I was psyched I got to meet the drummer, Mr. Kevin Talley. Once I got home, I would start digging into Dying Fetus. Behemoth and Black Dahlia Murder came onto my radar around that time too so I quickly fell in love with death-metal music. I saw Kevin a few years later playing for Hate Eternal. He is a fucking beast of a drummer. \,,/ \,,/

Great video! Talley is definitely under-appreciated. Not sure how he didn't get the gig with Slayer, after Lombardo left. I was never a big Misery Index fan, BUT...they managed to have two of my favorite drummers with Talley and also great (and also under-appreciated) Adam Jarvis. His stuff with PxDx is so good.
Kevin Talley is definitely one of the best death metal drummers ever.. I agree Rob.. you should know, you worked w that dude and the songs you guys wrote w him are some of chimairas best stuff.. andols is a badass drummer too.. every drummer chimaira has had are all incredible drummers.. they have to be, to be able to play that shit, lol.. Love Kevin's drumming, especially with Misery Index. That video is a masterclass in straight up power! A band i was in used to cover DEFECTOR at shows. Awesome riffs and good lyrics too!
Dude - I just recently hired Kevin to do drums on a single I'm working on. It sounds sick too dude - he killed it. To be honest tho man - lately you have been a big influence on me. I have always loved Chimaira but for some reason I've really noticed how smart you are with your riffage.
Hey thanks Jake, I really appreciate that man! And I'm stoked to hear you're working with the mighty KT! Please tell him I said hello if you get the chance, and stop back to leave a link to your song whenever the time is right!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld Hey man! I know it's been a minute since I mentioned the song... but its finally out! You can listen here is you would like! ruclips.net/video/0EAtgdBjH8Y/видео.html
Kevin Talley definitely has a unique style to his playing, it stands out on anything. I gained a lot of respect for him when he filled in for The Black Dahlia Murder in 2005 or 2006, and had less than a day to learn their set list. Then he did it again with Hate Eternal, which I think they opened for Chimaira, if I remember right. Either way, not many, if any people could do that on such short notice. nothing but respect for Him
I bought his instructional DVD back in the day. It was great. It was full of great drumming info but funny at the same time. I believe he was drinking bud light through the process so he progressively got “happier” throughout the video haha. I need to find that dvd!
Kevin is a legend. And maybe he is better than Andols, but Andols was the best drummer for Chimaira. Btw, as an old school Chimaira fan, this channel is pure gold. It's great to know about you, Rob, and watching your videos is entertaining and fun! Keep up the good work! You rule! Cheers from Spain!
Awesome dude. Fantastic drummer. Back in 2011 my band, Animus Divine, opened for Kevin, Rob, and Matt when they were playing with Six Feet Under in Tucson Arizona at The Rock. Anyways we had tshirts that night and I hooked Kevin up with one before their set and he wore it during their entire set 🤘. I thought that was the coolest shit ever....well that and smoking a doobie with Chris Barnes that night as well. Great fucking night and even better show. Chimaira and Six Feet Under are some of my favorite bands. Good shit Rob 🤘🤘👍✊🙏.
Killer dummer indeed, a beast behind the kit and as I posted in another of your videos, I think he did an amazing job in selftitled album. A class act. My favourite metal drummer is Gene Hoglan, I follow him since Dark Angel era and man, that guy really deserves his nickname, "the atomic clock" Of course, there's other metal drummers like Tomas Haake or Joey Jordison that are in the top of the game too, but Gene's kick drum technique is flawless.
I took Kevin to his first deathmetal show! It was to see melevolent creation. Dave on drums! He was drumming with us then took off to Dying fetus. I agree w you on his drum skills!
Hey Rob To some up Kevin in one word. Masterclass. For me Kevin did a fine job on the self titled album. And after seeing the live video that you shared back last year. Kevin is an animal behind the drum kit. I did listen to Impossibility and the self titled after this and both Kevin and Andols have there own style of playing. Same can be said for Austin. All three are without a doubt a talent in there own field of drumming. So maybe one day you can do something with Kevin again Rob.
@@RobArnoldWorld Well tell the video gods to hurry up lol. As always take care of yourself, stay safe and have a nice week Rob. See ya very soon. Cheers
Funny story. I'm standing in line at the Gothic in Englewood CO during the Jager Tour... I turn around and guess who's handing out little hand made flyers? Kevin Talley. Hahaha I think I was the only kid who religiously watched Nothing Remains on Music Choice Comcast on-demand every day like a lunatic.. Because I recognized him instantly. Hahahaha.
that video in the start is the one i show people when i tell them about kevin talley...that video and the one with his audition for slayer...when jeff gives kevin props you know you are witnessing greatness as talley kill every song they play....i would love to meet and chat with him as i have been shouting about how great his drummimng is since dying fetus.
I saw nothing Pete “Commando” Sandoval did not inspire as The Godfather of Death Metal drumming with Morbid Angel, Derek Roddy took it to the next level... Talley is great, much respect... Pay homage to Pete Sandoval, the innovator
Guy is an animal. I really like Andols style, he always did more left-field stuff that caught your attention. Talley is just a jackhammer. No matter how chaotic it looks and sounds, it's always metronome-like. Both top notch drummers. My personal favourite in Metal is Gene.
I love Dying Fetus and Ive always said that the best drummer in the whole world was Kevin. This is crazy!! Now of course is Trey Williams for me the number one 😉. Love it! Love you Rob 🤘❤🤘
Kevin taller es uno de los mejores bateristas de heavy metal. En su etapa con Feared junto a Ola Englund se lució. En las tomas con Slayer igual, un grande entre los grandes.
Overthrow, their first, was killer too. But I gotta say with all Kevins greatness aside, Adam Jarvis is a god damn monster. I've seen Misery Index live twice. One of the few bands to ever come to this part of the world, and man I gushed over that dude. He is a crazy perfectionist and had the pleasure to shake that dudes hand and had a good chat with him and Jason. There can never be one GOAT lol. Misery Index is a class act and every release is just good quality straight up killer death metal and has made their stake in it's history IMO. If you haven't Rob, check out some of Adam's drum vids, he looks hilarious when he plays lol.
I remember this video. Guys got tremendous power at high speeds, he has a bit of an ugly/stressed form too, which for some reason I like alot, as it adds to his unique style.
I can definitely see that 😂. I don't think I've seen anyone with a picking hand as strange as his. Tosin Abasi has major hitchhiker thumb, and Willie from Lamb of God is pretty unique too.
Kevin is definetly an awesome drummer. He is not the fastest...but he has a unique style which cannot be put up against "speed"...cause speed is just one of the "spices" one can use as a drummer..meaning...speed does not define how good of a drummer one are...however >style does ;) Thaanx for awesome video man.Greetings from the NorwegianDrummer,Stefan :)
I've always found it baffling that Kevin didn't become more of a "household name" in the drumming world. Dudes a fucking powerhouse, hard working guy, and has tons of personality in his playing. It's a shame the Slayer gig didn't pan out because a Slayer album with Talley would have been amazing.
Dear @Rob Arnold, thank you for this share! Curiously, I've seen this video before and I'm completely agree with you, Kevin pull it off greatly!!! On a side note, why did he leave Chimaira? What happened between him and the rest of the band?
I think there were some personality clashes going on in the band, and then right at that time Andols said he wanted to come back to the band. So it kind of just happened.
I would have loved to hear a Slayer album with Kevin on drums. his playing sounds like a mixture of Lombardo and Boston. Great drummer, how many times I've drummed to the live video of Notting Remains I can't say how often, I love this song 🤘🤘🤘

Edit after the watch: Kevin is a monster, loved this. His work on the self titled is some of my favorite drumming. Cool to see a raw video of him rippin it up! 🤘
Oh right on Chris that's awesome man! Those were good times for sure!👊
ABSOLUTE beast! I don't know much of him but he brought what was needed. Thanks for sharing Rob! Hope all is well.
Alex "grind" Pelletier of Despised icon is a lot like him, always utilizing The whole kit with tons of feel, blazing speed, and complementing the song super well...and just underrated as well
I'll have to check him out!
Hell yeah. I still say Andols has some of the best feet in the game.
Agree but I think I've as much chance as getting in there as Ricky does.
Oh fuck if Chimaira returned that would be sick
The Imperial Ambition is a song on dissent which has some of the most powerful shockingly heavy drumming ever. I remember jamming along to that in my bedroom circa 2006.
Dang! Dude is a machine. The drums sound awesome and we not even hearing the micd up. Bet sounds killer in the mix. 🤘😀
Link in the description if you want to find out!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld Just heard the song. Wow, super fast song and really heavy. 🤘😆
Rob, I love this sort of vid. Kevin's a big boy in the drumming game. Good on you for giving a mate some praise.
Met him when he was with Battlecross, he was a great dude. Drank a beer and chatted all things metal for a good 20 minutes after the show.
Slayer really goofed when they didn't let this guy sit behind the kit for them 🤷♂️ holy hell!
I agree with you Slayer should of given Kevin a spot in the band.
Nah he wasn't a good fit
I have some tracks with Kevin Talley that I recently dug out of the archives and started retracking guitars on
The slayer tryout video is awesome too
Great video, Rob!
He said it was Vinnie Paul that inspired his thinking on those things!🤘
my all time favourite death metal drummer. his drumming on dying fetus and misery index is the best ever
😎🤘
Rob I hate when RUclips takes you off of my rotation so quick. Anyway glad I can just search back out and catch up. Enjoyed this vid and yes he killed that track!!!!
I appreciate your diligence! 🤘
Awesome video , saw it years ago and to this day i love showing that performance to my friends . Great choice Rob 👍🏻😉
🤘
So you in a band or something?"
He said, "Yeah, I'm the new drummer for Chimaira".
My heart started racing a bit at that moment because at that time, that was the band I was there to see, and I hadn't realized they picked up a new drummer. This was just before I really started to get into death-metal.
I said, "Dude that is awesome! What's your favorite song to play by them?"
He said, "Well, I'd have to say 'Power Trip' because it's a faster, groovy type song. I like playing the faster stuff."
I said, "Very cool, love that song."
He said, "Yeah man, well I used to play drums for a band called Dying Fetus, you heard of them?"
I said, "Yeah of course, although I haven't listened to much of the music."
He said, "All good man, I'm just used to that kind of drumming; blast-beats all over the place."
I said, "Fuck yeah, that's cool."
Soon after finishing the cigarettes we parted ways and he went to set up and I was psyched I got to meet the drummer, Mr. \,,/ \,,/
i meet kevin !on destroy the opposition tour with skinless berzerker gorguts !he was i believe just 18 at the time!hes a deff great drummer and awsome dood!\m/
100% agree! dude is beyond incredible and super talented!
Kevin , Austin , Andols , 3 monsters behind kit !! all 3 with their different style and creativity , i like them all
Fuck yeah Rob, glad you're doing well. Thanks for the years of great riffing.
👊
Kevin killed it on this video bro.. killer video Rob.. thanks for sharing..
Cheers from Cincinnati Ohio USA..
Cheers Shannon!👊😎
@@RobArnoldWorld you bet bro.. thanks for yrs of extreme monstrous metal!! Ha.. taker easy..
unknowingly, i saw kevin perform live for battlecross but i found out about him through a project from ola englund called feared...
Kevin is fecking brilliant on the pots and pans 🤘. Misery index are excellent as well!
Please tell him I said hello if you get the chance, and stop back to leave a link to your song whenever the time is right!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld - oh dude hell yeah! I'd be honored to share it once it's done too! And dude - thanks for all the inspiration dude
@@RobArnoldWorld Hey man! I know it's been a minute since I mentioned the song... but its finally out! You can listen here is you would like! ruclips.net/video/0EAtgdBjH8Y/видео.html
The video i will always watch is the studio performance of Six! F'n epic!
Awesome what a masterpiece drummer, thank you Rob
I just found it a couple days ago, and thought to myself that I need to watch it! Never have, and now I'm even more intrigued!
Awesome brother! And I appreciate that! Thanks for the support!👊
Yup,,,I've watched Kevin jam this probably 2-300 times. He is the king.
Hell yeah
Kevin Talley is solid as fuck, one of the best for sure!!!
Ha! Dude that's awesome! Good times!🤘
Absolute precision
F yeah Rob he's a great drummer, couldn't agree with you more!
Killer dummer indeed, a beast behind the kit and as I posted in another of your videos, I think he did an amazing job in selftitled album. A class act. My favourite metal drummer is Gene Hoglan, I follow him since Dark Angel era and man, that guy really deserves his nickname, "the atomic clock"
Of course, there's other metal drummers like Tomas Haake or Joey Jordison that are in the top of the game too, but Gene's kick drum technique is flawless.
I remember seeing DAATH with Cattle Decapitation back in 07 was intense
I took Kevin to his first deathmetal show! It was to see melevolent creation. Dave on drums! He was drumming with us then took off to Dying fetus. I agree w you on his drum skills!
Awesome man!🤘
Kevin in Dying Fetus and misery index is what comes to mind 😀
Hey Rob To some up Kevin in one word. Masterclass. For me Kevin did a fine job on the self titled album. And after seeing the live video that you shared back last year. Kevin is an animal behind the drum kit. I did listen to Impossibility and the self titled after this and both Kevin and Andols have there own style of playing. Same can be said for Austin. All three are without a doubt a talent in there own field of drumming. So maybe one day you can do something with Kevin again Rob.
For sure Darren, and I definitely hope to work with Kevin again!
@@RobArnoldWorld Yes same here Rob. You both are well matched.
@@RobArnoldWorld What have you got planned for your next video ?
@@619dar I always have many ideas, but haven't committed to one just yet. I wait for the video gods to tell me what to do and then I get to work!
@@RobArnoldWorld Well tell the video gods to hurry up lol. As always take care of yourself, stay safe and have a nice week Rob. See ya very soon. Cheers
And the dude will lay tracks for your songs for a fee
That is well worth it bro
Kevin is a beast! Saw him perform with Hate Eternal. He sounded amazing just like the video.
I think you're onto something with videos about influences and interests.
Good stuff to watch ✌️👊.
Glad to hear it!👊
Jesus, that was like a one take and done haha So tight!
I agree rob, I remember the slayer try out footage back in the day.. omg...awesome
Hahahaha.
Haha that's rad man
that video in the start is the one i show people when i tell them about kevin talley...that video and the one with his audition for slayer...when jeff gives kevin props you know you are witnessing greatness as talley kill every song they play....i would love to meet and chat with him as i have been shouting about how great his drummimng is since dying fetus.
Agreed!
That is some insane drumming indeed, fucking hell 💪🏼😎🤟🏼
Killer vid. Getting some influence from marks twitch with the goofy gifs?? haha
Haha maybe!
I saw nothing Pete “Commando” Sandoval did not inspire as The Godfather of Death Metal drumming with Morbid Angel, Derek Roddy took it to the next level... Talley is great, much respect... Pay homage to Pete Sandoval, the innovator
Yessir Pete in THE man!
Guy is an animal. I really like Andols style, he always did more left-field stuff that caught your attention.
Talley is just a jackhammer. No matter how chaotic it looks and sounds, it's always metronome-like.
Both top notch drummers.
My personal favourite in Metal is Gene.
All well said!🤘🥁
I let Kevin know about your video. I used to jam with him before he made it big.
Fantastic video
👊
I love Dying Fetus and Ive always said that the best drummer in the whole world was Kevin. This is crazy!! Now of course is Trey Williams for me the number one 😉. Love it! Love you Rob 🤘❤🤘
Hell yeah!🤘 And Trey is the man!! Toured with him and Fetus a bunch back in the day!
@@RobArnoldWorld woooow I didnt know that! Thats awesome Rob! Two extremely talented musicians together omg! 🔥🔥🤘
Kevin taller es uno de los mejores bateristas de heavy metal.
En su etapa con Feared junto a Ola Englund se lució.
En las tomas con Slayer igual, un grande entre los grandes.
Nice guy to ... had amazing technical ability.
Right on!
I remember this video. Guys got tremendous power at high speeds, he has a bit of an ugly/stressed form too, which for some reason I like alot, as it adds to his unique style.
Haha that's kind of like Marty Friedman for me... One of my favorite players ever, but I'm put off by the look of picking his hand!
Right on Stef! You can say the same about guitar players!
@@RobArnoldWorld that is definetly true for sure.Nothing is worse than a "speedy" fast guitar solo just for the sake of it.
Damn Rob, Talley is FAST! 😨
I heard for the last few years he's been wandering around teaching people about towel safety and proper towel use.
Gah I miss being able to play like that
i really enjoyed the tight picalo snare sound talley did with fetus, i love all that earlier stuff
He was born in Bowie Maryland. My brother knew him.
Ahh! Yeah that sounds correct. I'm pretty sure his family then moved to Texas.
I would have loved to hear a Slayer album with Kevin on drums. his playing sounds like a mixture of Lombardo and Boston. Great drummer, how many times I've drummed to the live video of Notting Remains I can't say how often, I love this song 🤘🤘🤘
I meant a mixture of Dave Lombardo and Paul Bostaph, of course, not Boston 😂😂😂
Awesome man! And I totally agree about the mix of Slayer drummer!
Would love to see a super group consisting of Kevin Talley, Mark Hunter, Dino Cazares and Ryan Martinie
Wow wouldn't that be something!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld thanks for the reply, Sir. I still remember the first time I heard Chimaira!! It was something new, so awesome!!
@@amx1820 Awesome!🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld it was Army of Me, from the Freddy vs Jason OST. Man, your tone was great!!
Hey man, good vid... but we need more Chimaira. Or atleast to maybe know any other projects that Andols if he's doing anything heavy.
