  • In today's video we will have a look at a Mac Mini from 2012 and see if it is still usable in 2020. I'll go into the ins and outs of what is inside this 2012 Mac Mini and see if it can be used as a cheap entry into the Apple Ecosystem and be used as an Apple Workstation. Check out the video to see if this 8 year old Mac Mini has the ability to be upgraded to the proper specs for use on a day to day basis, run Catalina OS, and editing within Final Cut Pro X in 2020!

Awesome video; thank you! You answered every question I had; will upgrade my two old minis which are underperforming. My kids are using them for school and Chrome makes the machines so laggy. I also want to say that in my opinion, you did not over-repeat too much as someone else wrote; not everyone is such tech savvy and sometimes explaining the same thing more than once, using different words, gives us the confidence to really decide whether an upgrade is worthy or not.

I went with $250 Mac mini 2014 i5 1.6Ghz, 8GB of RAM and 250GB SSD on eBay but mainly to for everyday use on Catalina (like word processing, web browsing) and Airdrop to import and upload videos from my iphone. If I were serious about video editing, I would go with minimum 2018 base mini model and expand storage and upgrade GPU using external thunderbolt 3 ports, which this Mac dominantes over older versions with expandability. If you need Mac for one time or temporary project it may be worth to look into renting dedicated Mac in cloud from providers like Macstadium if you have fast internet connection with high upload speed.

How well could it run Logic Pro X (can switch to 9 if its way better) and Final Cut (imovie will actually do all I need, but just in case I want more) really want this mac mini to really be an intro pc to mac OS/ editing (audio and video) and DAW learning. Getting a midi keyboard soon, Logic has an amazing library which is why I hope I can run X). Thanks again!

Late 2014 i5 2.6 GHZ with 8 GB RAM and Iris 5100 graphics. Both have standard Hard drives (NO SSD) but I intend to edit with external hard
drives...I know the 2012 could be improved by replacing the HD with the SSD but I don't intend to edit internally...but as they are right now,
which system would be OK (I know they are basic computers) for FCP X with 1080p footage mostly (I use a Canon C100mk2 and a Canon 90D
mostly or exclusively)- Can I edit the footage as is or do I have to convert ALL to prores LT ? which Mac Mini would be the better one for FCP X? I just
want to learn it and do some projects..1 hr total length max.. if I installed a SSD in the Mac Mini 2012 would that make a difference? Even if i edit to an external drive.

This is a great idea, purchasing an older mini and the upgrading it to a more modern machine. I have a question about this approach though, would I be able to also connect two monitors to a 2012 mini or even better a 49” ultra wide monitor from Dell, LG, of Samsung? Some people said that one would need an external video processor (I could be wrong with the terminology) to use the entire screen as the mini can handle something of that size. If that is the case, what would a good external devise like that cost? I think it would still be cheaper to get an upgraded 2012 plus an external graphics processor as opposed to just getting the 2020 mini. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm more of a less is more type of person. not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination. I also love trying to get the most out of what I've got in my hands. I use a Microsoft surface pro 2 for my day to day, out and about tasks and I have a (late 2012) mac mini in which I've installed an SSD and two 8 gig 1600Mhz ram sticks. the surface pro 2 runs a 4 core i5 and the mac runs the 4 core i7. and before I upgraded the drive and ram, this thing ran like trash. it couldn't get out of its own way. but now it runs fantastic. I'm a windows user first, and even now, I'm still getting used to, and learning things about the mac that I've never known before. your question of, is it worth it to purchase the older mac ie. (2012) model today? the answer would have to be split, yes... and no. if your intention is to have a computer that will do anything you need it to do out of the box without hassle. no, I wouldn't suggest the 2012 mac mini. now, if your intention is to take that mac mini and replace the HDD with an SSD and double the ram for, at or around 200-400 dollars in total and have a kick-ass little machine. then yes definitely it would be worth your money. both my surface pro 2 (200$ used) and my mac mini (free then upgraded SSD and ram 150-250$) will allow me to edit high-resolution raw photos with ease. they will both allow me to edit high bitrate videos out of my Sony A5100. they burn through 4k30 and 1080p60 GoPro footage without breaking a sweat. if you own one of these mac minis and don't appreciate its performance. don't go out and buy a new mac or PC. break the seal on that B**** and "build" your own new mac mini for a 10th of the cost.

which runs well with Premiere CC and still FCP 7!!.So I would like to install FCP X on one of my two Mac Minis (I'm spoiled I know)- one
option is a Mac Mini late 2012 i5 2.5GHZwith 16GB RAM and Intel Graphics 4000- and the other one is Mac Mini
Thanks for any help you may provide.

@@DylansDecoded much appreciate man! I will definitely go with the Mac Mini 2014-it will do just fine with FCP X for 1080p...I do some freelance videography and 4k is nice but my clients don't demand it...yet! I want to learn FCPX soon...I know the Mac Mini 2014 is harder to upgrade (no RAM upgrade I know) but it's possible to upgrade the hard drive to a SSD- I wouldn't do it myself! I watched a couple of videos on youtube and I think that should be left up to the experts! I'm considering getting a 1tB SSD drive from Western Digital or Samsung and have a computer repair person replace it for $100 Cdn which is not much. I think there is a lot of life left in the mac minis and there are many uses for them. I may use my 2012 as a media centre for sure. Even if it only outputs 1080p over HDMI. Thanks a lot for the response!
