  • Should the average user buy the cheapest M2 Mac Mini? There are so many videos that talk about the M2 Mac Mini from the perspective of a Video Editor, a Photographer or a Creator - and that makes sense - because it’s a very capable computer - but I want to look at whether this new Mac Mini is a good value for the average user.
And because there are more configuration options, let’s talk about what the Mac Mini is, What you get when you buy it, which configuration option you should get, and what else you need.

Just bought the base model M2 Mac Mini w 8GB RAM. I have it connected to a 36” SONY TV. Fantastic for web browsing with lots of tabs open and equally great for streaming movies. I’m a tech professional and always do “more RAM” but could not justify Apple’s insanely high price for 16GB RAM. $400 (teacher pricing) for the Mac Mini and another *$200* for the add’l RAM?!? No thanks! 8GB works awesome for normal everyday use!

As a long time user that's always had a top of the line MacBook Pro (currently my work computer is an MBP with Intel i9 with 32GB RAM), I'm realizing that we are at a point that even these baseline M2s are insanely powerful. I could literally replace my current MBP with a 16GB MacBook Air (or Mini) and still see improved performance.
What a great thing to experience.

Well I bought the M2 Pro Mini with 16gb RAM and I'm very happy with it. With 3 years of Applecare it came out to $1588, and I think I did very well with it. With my old M1 I had browser tabs locking up on me while running other apps and that was not good. Then too I needed a lot more GPU than the M1 had for Second Life. My M2 drives 2 monitors, a 32 and a 70 inch and mounts my 72tb disk array, 2 keyboards, 2 mice and it just plain rocks! I'm so very happy with it :)

You know what we need from tech tubers like this guy? Videos that answer the "should I buy.." question about previous versions whenever something comes out. Like, now that the m2 is out, m1 is obviously even cheaper (right?). So should I still buy _it_? Is _it's_ performance still inline with every day use (or better) requirements of today?
Edit: Don't get me wrong though, I still want "should I buy..." videos about stuff that just came out, but instead of just making one video every time something comes out, make 2. It's a win-win for everyone 😁.

I've bought a base m2 Mac mini a week ago, and it's been great. I'm use it mostly casually to browse the web, write some essays for my university, some photoshop and illustrator as well. I also like to edit and render simple video clips (usually about an hour long) of me driving my car, at those tasks it's absurdly fast. As for games, I enjoy playing some civ VI and it's fine for that if you don't expect 4k 144 fps at max settings. Given that I got it with the student discount (2900 PLN, about $650) it's one of the best purchases in my life. Good work Apple, for real.

My daily work, on the job and personal, is Adobe CC. I agree with you, this is good for most folk. Even professionals who are primarily 2-D design based, the base model M2 is a great buy. Even though I could afford the Mini Pro or lowest Studio, I don't regret the decision. And Sidecar with my M2 iPad Pro 12" works perfectly. The SSD speed isn't noticeable enough for me to care; plus the hub I use allowed for internal SSD.

@@louisbertini I've been playing with it for a couple days. First impressions are that at this price point, you are getting a great computer. It's a small form factor setup with a pretty powerful processor, built in wifi. I would not hesitate to use this for everyday use. This can easily handle daily tasks (Office, email, web browsing, and more). If I were using it fro everyday and storing documents, I would purchase a 1TB external drive and if I were doing anything more multimedia intensive, I would step up to more RAM and possibly to the M2 Pro processor. I do wish they gave you a couple more USB ports. The worst thing I have to say about this computer is it does not come with a keyboard and mouse, there are cost effective alternatives out there but if you go for the apple keyboard and mouse, you can expect to add another $200-$300 to the price tag, which I think is a bit much. With the purchase of the keyboard, mouse, and a monitor, you are adding at least $300-$350 to the price tag which puts you at almost $1000. I found mouse and keyboard combos cheaper and would recommend going that route instead of the mac keyboard and mouse setup

If you get the M2 Pro chip - you can go up to 4K/240Hz over HDMI. The regular M2 chip can go up to 4K/60Hz. Hope that helps.

The other day I went to a store just see the RAM usage, there was no mac mini display piece, so I tried it on M2 macbook air. I opened few apps and activity monitor. It appeared that with just 4 apps open it was using around 5 GB of RAM. So, I am definitely going to buy 16GB RAM versionof mac mini. I am not yet able to decide, whether to go for 512 GB version. Does that write and read speed matters for normal user?

I got the regular M2 Mac mini with the highest available unified memory 24GB RAM and 512 GB storage.
It works fantastic , buttery smooth opening multiple apps , and also FCP video editing is too smooth to work with.
I didn't needed a M2 PRO Mac mini as it too overkilled for my needs . Also I don't need those extra ports as I always use only 1 single external monitor.
One question - I am new to Mac mini . When all my works are completed, what is the sequence to poweroff ?
do I need to switch off External monitor first or M2 Mac mini first ? . No idea what is the correct way to switch off .

Tempting, but not for me. For photographers who do journalism and events, Adobe's Denoise AI is of incalculable value, as it can make photos of people that were shot at ISO 16,000 look like they were taken at ISO 100. Now then, the cost of entry is $400 to $800 for a GPU that can process those photos in 5 to 10 seconds. As of this writing Apple and Adobe have been "discussing" for six months without results how Apple can fix the bugs in the M2 neural engine that prevent it from delivering that level of speed. So, no, I will not buy into an ecosystem where I must wait for a single provider to pay attention to a need that is of stratospheric importance for my work. Apple, in my disgruntled opinion, is looking exactly like the indifferent corporate Big Brother that it parodied in its famous "1984" Super Bowl commercial. I bought my first desktop computer in 1983, and since then I've seen many tech giants humbled when they ignored their users. I'm very happy that Intel is eating Apple's lunch, offering us the opportunity to build a $2400 PC that far surpasses the fastest M2 machines at a fraction of the price.

I’m an average user, I don’t do editing or gaming at all. But I definitely want my Mac mini to last as much years as it can. So, should I buy the 16gb unified memory one? ☺️

I was in the EXACT same position as you. I completely understand with the amount of information that says "go get the 16GB" while you don't know if it's worth it. (RUclips people test a lot of good things, it makes their standard so high and influence other people that don't actually need it)
My answer after reading your use case:
Absolutely get the base model and use the rest of $200 to upgrade your peripheral. Like I did, and it feels so great.
Future proofing is certainly a thing, but once you make the most out of your mac for the first 3 years, it'll feel worth it.

Absolutely disagree with you that the base Mini is a good purchase. Not enough memory and storage. Furthermore, if it dies then the whole thing has to be replaced instead of just the dead or defective piece (something worth considering). External hardrives are slower than Internal NVMe 4th generation. It's been noted that the 512GB is also slow like the 256GB version. Regardless of what the average user does with the computer, I suspect buying one that will last - more memory and storage will serve a person better over an extended period of time. At least 16GB of unified memory and 1TB of the faster NVMe storage will serve a person better now and in the future. One final thing, I believe people at this spectrum of the price range would not consider Thunderbolt accessories and stick with regular USB-C equivalents that are much cheaper and probably won't notice in their regular computing liv es.
That's where a regular PC Mini style or regular PC desktop you can always replace a defective or failed piece. Can't with the Mac Mini. Also, with the prices Apple charges for memory and storage upgrades a person is getting the potential of a more powerful PC options that offer the potential for upgrading and repairability and more functionality beyond just video content creation and RAW photography. However, the person interested in a Apple is better served with the M2 Pro. A better computer for a little more money (Apple fans shouldn't care too much about paying Apple premium pricing), and get a computer that is efficient, packaged elegantly and powerful for what it is. By a little more money, I mean the M2 Mini optioned out to have similar memory and storage as the M2 Pro Mini.
As of for the Mini vs PC comparison, I don't care about the portability of either. If I did care about portability then I would be looking at a MacBook Air M2 laptop. As for energy efficiency it might not be as important to someone shopping for a desktop vs one shopping for a portable computer. As for someone wanting a desktop that is portable that person is part of an insignificant percentage of buyers where this is an important purchase criteria. I would say the same for those that buy mini-tix computers to carry with them for LAN parties. Regardless of how portable tthe mini desktop is you still need a monitor and a keyboard - so much for portability at this point.
Neither promoting Apple or PC. Just stating the obvious and my personal opinion that the base Mac Mini M2 is a poor purchase choice. The rest is base on your preferences, wants and needs. For me, desire and preference is a computer where I only have to pay $275 for 32GBs of memory and get a 1TB NVMe 4th generation 2280 drive. Upgrading by 32GB for memory and upgrading from 512MGs to 1TB with Apple pricing is $800 . MacOS and "build quality" are already included in the base pricing so the upgrade is just for hardware with no value added to justtify the over $500 difference in upgrade upcharge by Apple in comparison to buying the items outright of a PC build.
