    • @Cujobob
      @Cujobob Год назад +96

      The SSD isn’t a bottleneck for almost anyone. This has been thoroughly tested. The RAM is the limiting factor on this device. Unfortunately, this channel does a horrible job running a scientific test.
      I forget the name of the channel but it’s been tested like for like with other models and controlling for just one variable. The RAM is the issue which dramatically effects performance. The SSD isn’t a problem because you’re rarely copying something to your desktop that’s so large that it’s really a factor (especially if you’re working with a 256gb SSD).

    • @brachiator1
      @brachiator1 Год назад +8

    • @Minsetti

      @@Cujobob But the lack of RAM wouldn't be such a huge problem (although it still is a super limiting factor) if the SSD was faster for swap usage. Remember the "unified memory" Apple was advertising a couple of years ago with M1 systems and how they were supposed to work fine with low amount of RAM because of extremely well optimized swapping on fast SSD's?
      Well now the whole unified memory thing is just garbage because of even slower SSD's than before.

      I know for people who watch videos like this that the SSD speeds are likely a deal breaker (myself included), but I can assure you that this base model is still plenty fast enough for the majority of people who will use it for internet browsing, streaming and light file management. For many people, transferring 40GB of files is rare and when they do it, the slower SSD speed in this base model is still drastically faster than the old HP or Dell they bought from Costco.

The specs bump from the M1 chip is not that great plus it has been more than 2 years since the M1 Mini was released. They are doing this because they can. For those who are not power users, just get the base M1 Mini at discount price, it would be a better deal than the M2 Mini.

    It's not expected, thanks bro for this teardown and giving us insights ❤️❤️ even though slowing down SSD is not greatly affecting day to day general activities but the read and write speed in higher benchmarks n photoshop is drastically low. But again Mac mini is meant for general n not pro consumption and the price has also reduced. So I think it's justified....
    Last but not the least, bro I love yr channel!!🤩🤩🤗❤️

    I have been struggling with the idea of building a computer versus buying a computer mainly for video and photo editing. Not only did I have to put that idea on hold due to Covid. I looked at acquiring the Mac Mini M1 but it was expensive with all the add-ons. I find your channel one of the best with up-to-date advice to potential consumers about Apple computers. Keep it up.

    It's so disappointing to see the slower ssd speeds on these new computers. Thanks so much for all the work you guys do in bringing these videos to us. :)

    Overall I'm happy that the Apple is producing their own chips now and we have many options on the market, even though some of them are not perfect at least there are options. Intel Macs were really unnecessarily expensive for what it offered, especially compared to non-Apple options.

    Love your detailed and informative videos. It’s a real shame the base model has a slow ssd but I feel like 512GB should be the bare minimum a computer comes with these days. I’m very interested to see how the M2 and M2 Pro compare to each other as a music maker!

    I lucked out and bought the 512MB version which is twice as fast (I think it clocks in at 3182 Write and 2850 Read). Looking forward to a Max Tech review of this machine to confirm, update or refine those numbers. I ordered it the day they released them so I just fluked out. I figured 512MB was a good size for my system drive and I have a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD in a matching dock below the Mini. It’s a phenomenal machine.

    My plan is to get the M2 version and upgrade the memory to 24 and the hard drive to 512, but waiting for them to be released to see how they are. Looking forward to your tests once you get the ones you ordered.

      Why not get the M2 Pro Mac Mini base model instead of M2 24/512? You gona lose some memory but you'll have much more CPU power for a short price difference. Think about it because MacOS can handle some tasks using the SSD to hold memory data. And with the faster CPU the OS will get things done faster, that in other words maybe can compesate the memory difference. idk, maybe this is smth that you can think abt.

      @@washingtonpaiva6947 you only get 2 extra efficiency cores and more GPU cores. Unless you do alot of video editing, I'd rather go for the 24GB ram, which means more apps being open at any one point. The M2 Pro only makes sense if you max it to 32GB.

    As you said, “not everyone needs to 512”, that also applies, “not everyone needs that SSD speed “, $100 lower still works better for a lot of users, and if vs m1 mini, spending $100 extra, you get 512 SSD vs 256, and m2 chip, and other upgrades.

      Exactly this. Personally, makes 0 difference to or from. Running all data externally and don't write a lot to internal drive anyway. Since most coding, design and music production is so light weight in terms of writing. That saved money is far more appealing.
