Always interesting when companies update the load data, you pretty much have to start from scratch unless you have older batches of powder that you have a tried and true load with
@@unclejim2330 Jim, with respect to your problem with bullets bulging the case and not chambering, Lee makes a bullet sizing kit. However, yours are polycoated so you may risk marring the coat.
Great point about powder changes over long terms. It changes lot/lot more subtly but who knows from 2010’s to now? I’m still working through my powder collection from 10y ago so I’ll stay with 9.0gn load for 180’s. I hope you don’t use 231 for 10mm. ;)

I like Power Pistol in my 10mm loads. I've never used Longshot for 10mm, but if I do, I'll know I need to work up a good load in spite of what my older manuals may say. We should always work up loads. Thanks for the video.
Soooo glad I came upon your vid. Found an extremely accurate load using HS-6. After trying various loads of Longshot, came across an extremely accurate longshot loading with increased speed .. >1300fps. Thanks again.
I sure remember the max load being 9.5 grains and my Lee manual says so as well. I emailed hodgdon about this late 2020 trying to find out if Long shot powder changed or if they just backed the charges down and they never replied. I have went to the 9.5 max with a 180gr bullet and was pushing over 1440fps out of a 6" barrel. I now stay right in the 8.2 grain range for "hot" loads and 7.7 grains for plinking loads. All I push is PC lead.
So I have the exact barrel as you do. The alpha wolf 10mm 6" and the chamber is super tight. I use the Lee factory crimp die and it does iron out the case some where the bullets are seated. I think it is because of your .401" sizing and the tightness of this barrel. I just crank the Lee FCD down to 1 turn (crimp setting) and go to a crimp of .421". This DOES decrease the bullet diameter right where the crimp is but does not effect the overall diameter of the bullet from start of ogive after the crimp to end of ogive. Once you get the FCD you'll notice what im talking about, you'll clearing see a shiny spot on your brass the whole length you have your bullet seated to. I been thinking about trying a .400" sizer myself. I have gotten zero leading even pushing my 182 gr (Lee 175- TC) bullets to over 1400 fps sized to .401" but I'll be interested to see how they do sized to .400''.

I’ve had problems like that before on different brass so the brass that works I make a note of it and if you use lee factory crimp die it’s going to size your bullets quite a bit that’s why I don’t like it great video thanks for sharing

Im looking in both the 2016 manual and the 2023 hodgdon annual manual. Both list longshot at 9.5 grains max for the same bullet which is the 180 sierra jhp. Also same pressure and velocity.
If you’re having trouble with the bulge on the case you need to run them through your crimp die which fixes that every single time even if you don’t crimp it or have a very light crimp! Yes you just mentioned at this very moment you were going to get a Lee crimp die that’s what I use and it irons out this issue!
I load 10mm with Vectan BA 6.5, there's no load data for it and their idea of the burn rate is way off (I split a Super Blackhawk cylinder with it), I use Federal primers because they're the softest and I see how the brass fits back in the chamber. Also chronograph while I'm at it, I don't like any binding on re-insertion into the chamber when I'm flying blind.
Funny, I was looking for a .400 sizing die just the other day. Wish Lee made one. My PC bullets seem to like being .001 under what you'd normally size to with lead. I found that Lee factory crimp die was sizing down the bullet even more with the case around it. I'm guessing it's not good for the pressure when that happens but I haven't see any warning signs either. Good luck and safe shooting on your quest for hot 10mm reloads.
@@unclejim2330 I went to a .451 sizing die for my 45acp after finding problems with the "standard" of .452. Thinking of contacting Lee to see if they can make me a .400 for my PC bullets. May need to do the same for the 9mm as well.
A 10mm neck turning video would be entertaining, but a Lee FCD will fix the problem.👍 That’s crazy about the change in powder…should have just rebranded it…that’s not safe. 🤦🏻♂️
I updated all my die sets to include Lee Factory Crimp Die for the sizing ring. I found using the FCD will even your chronograph numbers. Hope that worked out for you.
10mm and 357 Sig hot load info For those of you mad scientists who reload and want to make 10mm and 357 Sig great again….. Fwiw I found on some forums (YMMV) 2 loads which, in THIS gun (10mm G40 Klone 6.61” LWD compensated barrel + 22# RSA in a 6” longslide) “are supposed to” do 1400fps with Hornady 180gn XTPs. CCI LPP’s, Starline brass, heavy Lee FCD crimp, and coal is 1.260”. Hodgdon powders used were: 9.7gns Longshot And 17gn Lil Gun. NOTE: these are over max published loads and flattened primers, they ran in MY gun AS CONFIGURED. They ejected 6-10’ away. They were accurate enough at conversational distances. I’ve shot them and they are confy to shoot IN MY GUN AS CONFIGURED. The compensator makes a huge difference! I dont have a chronograph so I am estimating the velocities based on what forum shooters reported from their guns. Point being….to me it was worth it to try carefully building up these loads. Shot at approx 5,000’ elevation. Likewise in 357 Sig I use the Speer GDHP with Hodgdon Longshot 9.5gn, federal small pistol primers, asst brass, the Speer GDHP 125gn JHP coal is 1.140” COAL, shot the load in 5.5” G35 compensated (LWD comp) conversion barrel is 1643fps as per what other forum shooters got, as I have no chronograph these are estimates but were safe in my gun, also safe in G23 with threaded and compensated (LWD comp also as were the above 10mm and 357 Sig longslide) 4-1/2” barrel, and unknown velocities. YMMV! I really enjoyed this video, and appreciate your making it.
@@unclejim2330 it was doing careful work to get there and by using reloading lore from other cartridges gleaned over the experience I have directly acquired. But it can be done (1400fps 180gn XTPs in 10mm) as there are videos out there showing chronograph results. I really did enjoy your video sir too.
The data hasn’t changed…hornaday starts at a lower load than does hodgdon ..if you look at the data you’ll see that the hodgdon data tops out at 34600 psi at 9.5 grains…the hornaday does not list psi for any of it’s loads…I have shot them at hodgdon’s max without issues and hornaday’s start loads again without issue…your results may vary
I use the Lee FC on my 10 mm loads. I shoot starline in my revolver and a mix of everything in my semiauto. I can feel that Lee FC die working harder on some of those that others. I don't have any Longshot, I thing that I have everything else, LOL. I will send you some MP 402-160hp, if I can ever get some more cast up.

Thing is, if you load .40 you can use the same powder and bullets but with much less powder, however, .40 cases are just really cut down 10mm with a different headstamp. If you load up to 10mm powder amounts you are WAY over, yet if you don't get high preasure signs with max 10mm loads, then how will you get any preasure signs with .40 that is loaded up to the 10mm power?
Out of curiosity what is the longest COL that your gun will accept? I've been experimenting with loading bullets 'long' to leave more room in the case for more powder. My 10mm is single shot so I am not worried about magazine compatibility.
Get a Redding GRx die and run the oversized loads through it, even completed loads. The Dillon dies don't size far enough down. I've also had great luck with Mighty Armory sizing dies.
I've used Longshot for years. The burning rate on the charts is faulty. It burns way quicker than shown. Because of this, I've had a number of very bad experiences with it. From my data, the safest thing to do when loading with Longshot. Is to use Accurate Arms #5 data when loading with Longshot. Don't pay any attention to either the burn rate or data given for it in the loading manuals. The are wrong! Very bad things can happen, if you use them reloading with Longshot.
The 2020 Hodgdon reloading manual still list 9.5 grain of longshot with the 180 grain sierria bullet as the max load. Your velocity with your bullet is way to high for the amount of powder you are using. The max load of 9.5 grain of longshot is only 1287 fps and 34600psi per Hodgddon with the 180 grain bullets. Something isn't right here.
I’m sticking with manufacturers data. all I can say is my chrono don’t lie, it’s a 6” barrel, lead bullets are faster, and I’m at 7.000 ft. I’ve found lots of funky info in manuals like 5.7 OAL. 🤷♀️
You probably already found the answer, but I emailed Hodgdon a few months ago about the change in load data. They stated there was a change in pressure testing equipment that revealed pressure issues.
Last time I checked their max loads for 180gr was nearly identical for the 40s&w and the 10mm. I wonder why they didn’t change the data for the 40 as well
I noticed the data change too a couple months ago. I swear it list 9.0 for a minute as max on a 180 jacketed before going to 8.2. I was loading 9.5 with a 180 fmj and getting 1335 fps out of my Kimber 1911. I found this a little much and settled on 9.0 yielding 1250 fps. What I find ironic is the data for 40SW and 357 Sig is unchanged. Something else, max charge for 40SW 180 jacketed is 8.0 and 8.2 for 10MM. Seriously? And why 8.4 for a 180 coated cast? I speculate there had to have been some bad reports using a 9.5 shot. .424" didn't sound like a big deal until I measured my loads. Most of my 10s are S&B brass and measured .4205" using a .400" bullet. I did find one Starline, .4215". Generally speaking, I'm not a FC crimp die fan. The idea of swagging/sizing a completed cartridge doesn't address the underlying issue. Knowing how tight LW cuts their chambers, it's probably the path of least resistance. I actually have a 40/10 FCD because of the same problem in 40. It is now a dedicated push through sizing die that I run all my 40, 10 and 357 Sig brass through after cleaning.
I've had similar problems when hand loading 40 S&W cartridges. To bring cases back to or near factory outer dimensions I used a Redding G-RX base sizing die kit and resizing lubricant. Since you hand load all that is needed is your loading press. A catch can is sold separately but you can make one out of an empty water bottle that performs quite well. Lee is making some of the same kind of product, the Bulge Buster, in several calibers. Another issue I had was with a case gauge being so tight in tolerance that a .400 caliber bullet would not pass through the gauge. I since then bought another and found it adequately machined for meaningful purpose. As a subtle reminder, to anyone hand loading cartridges, a SLIGHT flaring of the case mouth will add in seating bullets. I just read below that 'baranski' mentioned the Redding G-RX sizing die. I just hate being redundantly superfluous. Good video. Shame on RUclips for the eradication of your library.
Lee Bulge Buster works well for the ‘Glock Bulge’ removal especially on picked up range brass (never can find all of my own) at a very affordable price for the process. Now should you use it for the 9mm, it is recommended to use the 9mm Makarov sizing die to bring back the dimensions. All other calibers you use the sizing die, for 40 S&W, 45 ACP or 10 mm. Once in a while you sometimes have to run it through a couple times to fit the check gauge, but not many and then a few just won’t fit, which I toss those out. Always nice to have the check gauge, so you don’t have a batch of reloads that don’t cycle. You can always check them in your pistol barrel to see if slides in and out freely as an alternative. Best to all who reads this!

I'm loading 9.2 Longshot w 185 Extream Penetrators @ 1189 fps & getting no overpressure signs at all. New Starline brass & CCI 300 Primers. At 9.4 it starts flattening primers & @ 9.5 it popped a primer. ( 10 round batch before I dropped back to 9.2) XDM-E 4.5. My G20 gen 5 cannot handle these loads at all w/o jamming every 3-4 shots. Buffalo Bore 200 & 220 Hardcasts are blowing out gen 4 Glocks all over w/o full case support bbl & spring replacements. After that they work great. Usually blowing out through the mags. Some are getting cracked slides w/o upgrading to 22-24 recoil springs. 😢 Unfortunately, the Glock rep says they have no intention of making stronger springs for the gen 5s ( which are flimsy to begin with) & you can't use gen 4 aftermarkets. Too short. Am getting 1250 w 180 grain Berry's copper coats @ 9.2. To make matters even worse, my TH10 handles them all beautifully except for the last round which usually jams at a 45° angle going into the chamber. No problems with the light loaded factory SAMMI crap in either the Glock or the TH10. The XDM-E 4.5 eats everything. Been 100% reliable. The Longshot I'm using is relatively new. Purchased last April. Personally, I think Hodgdon is just downloading to cover their insurance factors if they haven't changed their formula. An NRA atty friend told me 20 years ago that ALL the load manuals were printed 10% light to make up for gun mfgrs variations. Insurance factors. If that's still true I don't know but in today's world nothing would surprise me. Here in Alaskas grizzly central we load everything as hot as possible. We START at the max load & work up. Us old timers were loading for bear long before Underwood & Buffalo Bore caught up. I was running 320 WFNHC @ 1300 FPS in the 44s & only then in the Rugers because they double charge test fire their units before selling them. No other brand revolver hand gun could handle that power. Sako USED to do the same w their rifles. But that was 40+ years ago. For the Marlin 45/70s we ran 420 WFNHC @ 2100 fps. I dropped a LOT of big bears w 1 shot w that load. Today, B.B. is pushing a 430 WFNHC @ 2300 fps. Best install a super mag Kickpad for either of those bruisers. Rubber grips on the 44s was pretty much mandatory too. With the 44 reloads case life was 3-4 before junk bucket time. Double crimping was a must too. 1st a curl with a squeeze on top of that to prevent slug jump.

Are you running 180gr or 200gr bullets?
I'm at 1260fps with 200gr FMJs with a 10.0gr charge of HS-6.
At 9.3 grains of longshot and a 180 xtp, im averaging 1225 from a 4.5 inch barrel. No pressure signs.

Your 40 would shoot this bullet fine, the only difference is the 10 does it casually and can take the heat. 👍

On line is the newest update and always work up loads with a Chrono and check brass. If you go in the 9’s use new Starline brass. 🤭

I ran into the same drama. I use QuickLOAD also and estimated 8.2gr. Turns out that was the sweet spot.

10 is snappy but it was mild compared to a mid size 357 revolver. 👍
I've got the lyman 50th edition and they don't even have Longshot as a listed powder for any of loads.

@@unclejim2330 it was doing careful work to get there and by using reloading lore from other cartridges gleaned over the experience I have directly acquired. But it can be done (1400fps 180gn XTPs in 10mm) as there are videos out there showing chronograph results. I really did enjoy your video sir too.
The data hasn’t changed…hornaday starts at a lower load than does hodgdon ..if you look at the data you’ll see that the hodgdon data tops out at 34600 psi at 9.5 grains…the hornaday does not list psi for any of it’s loads…I have shot them at hodgdon’s max without issues and hornaday’s start loads again without issue…your results may vary

I use the Lee FC on my 10 mm loads. I shoot starline in my revolver and a mix of everything in my semiauto. I can feel that Lee FC die working harder on some of those that others. I don't have any Longshot, I thing that I have everything else, LOL. I will send you some MP 402-160hp, if I can ever get some more cast up.

With the thicker rounds, i put them in the sizing die with the decapping pin removed
I started putting range brass in a gauge as I size them and put aside bulged ones no more issues with the tight chambered barrel. 👍
Thing is, if you load .40 you can use the same powder and bullets but with much less powder, however, .40 cases are just really cut down 10mm with a different headstamp. If you load up to 10mm powder amounts you are WAY over, yet if you don't get high preasure signs with max 10mm loads, then how will you get any preasure signs with .40 that is loaded up to the 10mm power?
10mm brass is thicker/stronger and longer so less pressure in the same amount of powder.

Out of curiosity what is the longest COL that your gun will accept? I've been experimenting with loading bullets 'long' to leave more room in the case for more powder. My 10mm is single shot so I am not worried about magazine compatibility.

You should check the Hornandy manual
They don’t have lead Bullets so I check all data and of course the powder manufacturers updates. 👍
Get a Redding GRx die and run the oversized loads through it, even completed loads.
The Dillon dies don't size far enough down.
I've also had great luck with Mighty Armory sizing dies.
The Lee bulge buster would be cheap and fast on the APP. 🤷♀️

I've used Longshot for years. The burning rate on the charts is faulty. It burns way quicker than shown. Because of this, I've had a number of very bad experiences with it.
From my data, the safest thing to do when loading with Longshot. Is to use Accurate Arms #5 data when loading with Longshot. Don't pay any attention to either the burn rate or data given for it in the loading manuals. The are wrong! Very bad things can happen, if you use them reloading with Longshot.

The 2020 Hodgdon reloading manual still list 9.5 grain of longshot with the 180 grain sierria bullet as the max load. Your velocity with your bullet is way to high for the amount of powder you are using. The max load of 9.5 grain of longshot is only 1287 fps and 34600psi per Hodgddon with the 180 grain bullets. Something isn't right here.
I’m sticking with manufacturers data. all I can say is my chrono don’t lie, it’s a 6” barrel, lead bullets are faster, and I’m at 7.000 ft. I’ve found lots of funky info in manuals like 5.7 OAL. 🤷♀️
Corporate Lawyers your Chronograph will tell you ! I use 8.6 of LS with 220gr Hardcast with WLP and 8.8 with 200gr

You probably already found the answer, but I emailed Hodgdon a few months ago about the change in load data. They stated there was a change in pressure testing equipment that revealed pressure issues.

Last time I checked their max loads for 180gr was nearly identical for the 40s&w and the 10mm. I wonder why they didn’t change the data for the 40 as well

I noticed the data change too a couple months ago. I swear it list 9.0 for a minute as max on a 180 jacketed before going to 8.2. I was loading 9.5 with a 180 fmj and getting 1335 fps out of my Kimber 1911. I found this a little much and settled on 9.0 yielding 1250 fps. What I find ironic is the data for 40SW and 357 Sig is unchanged. Something else, max charge for 40SW 180 jacketed is 8.0 and 8.2 for 10MM. Seriously? And why 8.4 for a 180 coated cast? I speculate there had to have been some bad reports using a 9.5 shot.
.424" didn't sound like a big deal until I measured my loads. Most of my 10s are S&B brass and measured .4205" using a .400" bullet. I did find one Starline, .4215". Generally speaking, I'm not a FC crimp die fan. The idea of swagging/sizing a completed cartridge doesn't address the underlying issue. Knowing how tight LW cuts their chambers, it's probably the path of least resistance. I actually have a 40/10 FCD because of the same problem in 40. It is now a dedicated push through sizing die that I run all my 40, 10 and 357 Sig brass through after cleaning.

I also found this interesting. How can the 40 and 10 be so close? Seems like either the 40 data needs to be lowered or the 10 data is wrong.
I've had similar problems when hand loading 40 S&W cartridges. To bring cases back to or near factory outer dimensions I used a Redding G-RX base sizing die kit and resizing lubricant. Since you hand load all that is needed is your loading press. A catch can is sold separately but you can make one out of an empty water bottle that performs quite well.
Lee is making some of the same kind of product, the Bulge Buster, in several calibers.
Another issue I had was with a case gauge being so tight in tolerance that a .400 caliber bullet would not pass through the gauge. I since then bought another and found it adequately machined for meaningful purpose.
As a subtle reminder, to anyone hand loading cartridges, a SLIGHT flaring of the case mouth will add in seating bullets.

Lee Bulge Buster works well for the ‘Glock Bulge’ removal especially on picked up range brass (never can find all of my own) at a very affordable price for the process. Now should you use it for the 9mm, it is recommended to use the 9mm Makarov sizing die to bring back the dimensions. All other calibers you use the sizing die, for 40 S&W, 45 ACP or 10 mm. Once in a while you sometimes have to run it through a couple times to fit the check gauge, but not many and then a few just won’t fit, which I toss those out.
Always nice to have the check gauge, so you don’t have a batch of reloads that don’t cycle. You can always check them in your pistol barrel to see if slides in and out freely as an alternative.

I'm loading 9.2 Longshot w 185 Extream Penetrators @ 1189 fps & getting no overpressure signs at all. New Starline brass & CCI 300 Primers. At 9.4 it starts flattening primers & @ 9.5 it popped a primer. ( 10 round batch before I dropped back to 9.2) XDM-E 4.5. My G20 gen 5 cannot handle these loads at all w/o jamming every 3-4 shots. Buffalo Bore 200 & 220 Hardcasts are blowing out gen 4 Glocks all over w/o full case support bbl & spring replacements. After that they work great. Usually blowing out through the mags. Some are getting cracked slides w/o upgrading to 22-24 recoil springs. 😢 Unfortunately, the Glock rep says they have no intention of making stronger springs for the gen 5s ( which are flimsy to begin with) & you can't use gen 4 aftermarkets. Too short. Am getting 1250 w 180 grain Berry's copper coats @ 9.2. To make matters even worse, my TH10 handles them all beautifully except for the last round which usually jams at a 45° angle going into the chamber. No problems with the light loaded factory SAMMI crap in either the Glock or the TH10. The XDM-E 4.5 eats everything. Been 100% reliable. The Longshot I'm using is relatively new. Purchased last April. Personally, I think Hodgdon is just downloading to cover their insurance factors if they haven't changed their formula. An NRA atty friend told me 20 years ago that ALL the load manuals were printed 10% light to make up for gun mfgrs variations. Insurance factors. If that's still true I don't know but in today's world nothing would surprise me. Here in Alaskas grizzly central we load everything as hot as possible. We START at the max load & work up. Us old timers were loading for bear long before Underwood & Buffalo Bore caught up. I was running 320 WFNHC @ 1300 FPS in the 44s & only then in the Rugers because they double charge test fire their units before selling them. No other brand revolver hand gun could handle that power. Sako USED to do the same w their rifles. But that was 40+ years ago. For the Marlin 45/70s we ran 420 WFNHC @ 2100 fps. I dropped a LOT of big bears w 1 shot w that load. Today, B.B. is pushing a 430 WFNHC @ 2300 fps. Best install a super mag Kickpad for either of those bruisers. Rubber grips on the 44s was pretty much mandatory too. With the 44 reloads case life was 3-4 before junk bucket time. Double crimping was a must too. 1st a curl with a squeeze on top of that to prevent slug jump.
