Recorded at Palasport Nuovo in Modena, Italy on 16th and 17th November 1993.
Additional recording and production at Real World Studios, Box, UK & Guillaume Tell Studios, Paris, France
Secret World Live is a film of a Peter Gabriel concert in 1993, as part of his Secret World Live tour to support his sixth solo album, Us. The show is performed across two stages: a square and a circular stage, bridged by a conveyor belt. It was released on VHS, LaserDisc and DVD. An album of the same title with a similar track listing was also released.
The film received the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video.
The film has been remastered and became available on DVD and Blu-ray on 2 July 2012 in the UK and 24 July 2012 in North America. The new release also contains the song "Red Rain" that was not present on the original releases.
Paula Cole (born April 5, 1968) is an American singer-songwriter. Her single "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1997, and the following year she won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Her song "I Don't Want to Wait" was used as the theme song of the television show Dawson's Creek.
Lyrics
In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail
No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my name, I've changed my face
But no one wants you when you lose
Don't give up
'Cause you have friends
Don't give up
You're not beaten yet
Don't give up
I know you can make it good
Though I saw it all around
Never thought I could be affected
Thought that we'd be the last to go
It is so strange the way things turn
Drove the night toward my home
The place that I was born, on the lakeside
As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground
Don't give up
You still have us
Don't give up
We don't need much of anything
Don't give up
'Cause somewhere there's a place
Where we belong
Rest your head
You worry too much
It's going to be alright
When times get rough
You can fall back on us
Don't give up
Please don't give up
'Got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
Going to stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
And whatever may go
That river's flowing
That river's flowing
Moved on to another town
Tried hard to settle down
For every job, so many men
So many men no-one needs
Don't give up
'Cause you have friends
Don't give up
You're not the only one
Don't give up
No reason to be ashamed
Don't give up
You still have us
Don't give up now
We're proud of who you are
Don't give up
You know it's never been easy
Don't give up
'Cause I believe there's a place
There's a place where we belong
As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and with 1982's Security, he began to move into the mainstream; "Shock the Monkey" became his first Top 40 hit, paving the way for his multi-platinum breakthrough So in 1986. Accompanied by a series of groundbreaking videos and the number one single "Sledgehammer," So became a multi-platinum hit, and Gabriel became an international star. Instead of capitalizing on his sudden success, he began to explore other interests, including recording soundtracks and running his company Real World. By the time he returned to pop with 1992's Us, his mass audience had faded away and he spent the remainder of the '90s working on multimedia projects for Real World.
Following his departure from Genesis in 1976, Peter Gabriel began work on the first of three consecutive eponymously titled albums; each record was named Peter Gabriel, he said, as if they were editions of the same magazine. In 1977, his first solo album appeared and became a moderate success due to the single "Solsbury Hill." Another self-titled record followed in 1978, yet received comparatively weaker reviews. Gabriel's third eponymous album proved to be his artistic breakthrough, however.

Back when the world was NORMAL!!! Paula Cole has a stunning voice and looked AMAZING in that dress!!
What do you mean by "World"? Russian's weren't having such a great time in '93
For some backstory on Paula Cole´s performance, taken from the wikipedia page: "he brought Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor onto the tour as guest vocalist, covering Askew's keyboard parts with Jean-Claude Naimro of Kassav'.[2] O'Connor left suddenly in October, and American singer-songwriter Paula Cole was quickly recruited to fill her position, earning high praise for her performance.[5] The core of Gabriel's touring band was composed of long-time collaborators bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, drummer Manu Katché and violinist L. Shankar. This was the first time that Gabriel used in-ear monitors on tour.[6]
A few days after Cole joined the tour, the show was filmed and recorded in Modena, Italy, to produce the concert video Secret World Live."
So considering the short amount of time Miss Cole had to prepare for this performance, you have to bow in awe.
Sinead O’Connor and drama?
Without doubt, two of the best voices in music. Paula was completely unmatched by anyone else.
I watch a lot of concert performances on the ol' RUclips. I can't think of a female performer who is more perfect in presentation than Paula Cole was at this concert
The beauty of this performance is that Paula genuinely doesn't realise how utterly amazing she is !!!! Sublime.
How could you possibly know that?
Gabriel got the best young female vocalist he could get, and in turn Paula Cole got the promotion she needed for success in her career.
Peter Gabriel is already an icon and I wasn't expecting less from him but Paula Cole took my breath away a few times. Never heard of her before. She was able to drew applause over Peter. That's something.
Sinéad O' Connor was the planned female or co-vocalist for this tour. However, she left whitout any apparent reason very few weeks before it started.
Then Paula Cole, almost unknown at the time, appeared like an angel to replace her. Few reharsals at the speed of light and there she was to give her best.
She was and stood superb in all senses, and thanks to this opportunity she had the chance to show that she was not only a great vocalist but also a magnificient musician.
Sinead was a freak and unreliable, from what I've seen. 'love Kate Bush's version on the album, Paula does an awesome job here-kudos to her. The album, So, was huge in my life. Just epic and full of great songs. Still.
@@pasodeminick My personal favourite was with Kate Bush for this song. I just think Kate has a way of creating more depths.
But your commentary on Sinead follows the usual path, so in that regard you are in good, safe company.
For me, I think that she would have "achieved a solo career" regardless of Prince, because she had a soul like Kate's voice that could hold you, and you can feel the power portrayed in the voice.
Sinead just had a lot more demons to control, which meant that she was not the reliable performing monkey that some people wanted her to be. And that has brought her a lot of contemptuous ridicule and mockery.
@@Roger-go6jc When someone is right, all you have to do is recognize it. So I did and just deleted my second comment about Sinéad. She was great and I have to admit that dealing with mental health issues is very far to be a reason to question her.
@JRC Paula Cole “almost unknown” ?? Take it you are under 30? Wow 😂. That’s like saying Kate Bush was almost unknown until StrangerThings made her famous, lol.
@@twilightzone47 In 1993 Paula Cole was almost unknown. It was only after the Secret World tour that she recorded her first record (1994). By the way, I was listening almost everyday to Bush Hounds Of Love when I was 15 or 16. I wish I would be under 30...
For sure Secret world is the best Peter's show ever. It just worked so great with Paula and the others. This is one of my most favourite concerts ever produced. Simply amazing.
I didn't see it mentioned in the comments and many of you may know, but her story of how she came to be on this video is pretty amazing. She had just recorded an album on a tiny boutique record label. Peter leaves a voice mail asking her to join him as a singer, she flies to to Germany for 1 rehearsal, 1 soundcheck, and then thrown out before 16,000 fans. 3 or 4 days after, made this video. If you're good…you're good.
@Paul LeCain… thanks for the background🙏🏼. Paula has a beautiful voice and I feel it’s never fair to compare voices, as each singer is unique. She sang her part of the song with so much feeling, it was perfect❤
There’s always one person who has to comment on these videos with some made up obscure shit.
So then you gotta give!
@@seycas118Well said, agreed 100%
@Paul LeCain what's your source for this story?
Never understood how Paula Cole did not have more singles etc. Loved her singles.
Honestly, I think she doesn't have any more singles because she hasn't accepted modeling her art to meet the demands of the market. Paula is authentic and wonderfully talented!
We have NOTHING like this today!! Unimaginably sad....
We don't even have guitars anymore. It's all DJ mix console and loops.
This should be the anthem song for 2023
Absolutely true 👍
I was at this concert. It was just incredible. Paula as a backup singer to Peter was awesome.
How I wish I’d been there
goosebumps all over when Paula has her solo, she is so amazing
Extremely beautiful and inspirational
One of the best songs ever! Paula did a phenomenal job. This song reinforces how music touches and moves the soul.
Paul, what a beautiful voice. Such a gift. Peter of course is a musician's musician, and knows great talent.
At that moment, Paula Cole was probably the most attractive woman on the planet.
probably , you have right 🙂
and the Solsbury hill the beatifull song
And she wore combat boots!! Love it ❤️
Everyone wore combat boots back then. Paula was so , is so, unique: a mix of wild child and purity at the same time. She is just very true to her musical self.
Paula ist immer noch toll..
What a combination! Peter Gabriel and Paula Cole!! A match made in heaven! I hope these two individuals realize the contribution they made to the youth of the time!
Paula Cole is incredibly classy, beautiful and talented. A real goddess, here
Kate Bush comparisons are pointless here. She doesn't try to mimic, she sings the part in her own style and its beautiful.
Completely ❤
100%
Paula is so much her own voice. Her clarity, heart and soul stir mine. Heaven. And with Peter. Pinch me! Moves me to my toes. ❤
I just love both singers ~ love the purity of Paula Coles voice!
Wow, 30 years have passed (I was in college). I really needed to hear this now. Amazing song. So beautiful!
The two of them had great chemistry in this concert, and I really enjoy her singing throughout.
Paula - best singer for PG ever.
Manu - best drummer for PG ever.
And where do we even begin when discussing Levin & Rhodes????
Peter and Paula...A dream duett.....I love it, because the song is 30 year´s old😘😘👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Paula wow! So beautiful
I remember this concert very well, loved it, spectacular. But didn't understand then and still don't ... what's with the unfeminine combat boots?! so mannish, why?
@@37center ummm...they look great!..and have been a form of female fashion since the late 70s or earlier. often part of an ensemble that is both feminine and an expression of the working person..personally i think its a good look. and she owns it.
@@timn4481 yeeeah that's feminine, and men give birth.
@@37center Doc Martens. They were fashionable at the time.
Love the boots. They look sexy as hell on Paula. Saw her with Peter in 1996with white dress and boots. Wow
Man watching Peter from Genesis to solo what a journey. This lady has a beautiful voice.
How can you not love BOTH Kate & Paula's versions. The song in it's self is so powerful. Peter is no slouch either.
So happy for Paula that she got this gig!!!!
Cole just kills that song! Yes, I like Bush even more, but Cole makes it a wonderful experience, and way cute to boot.
Paula Cole has an absolutely amazing voice. This song really shows off her talent.
This is just an epic performance..... the whole band is just amazing.......
Awesome female solo... just stunning and with so much heart.. An excellent choice.. So refreshing... not predictable.. So much heart.. She communicated that so beautifully...
Paula is amazing.
Paula! Rockport MA and Berklee School of Music's finest! This gives me shivers.
Paula is beautiful in so many ways ❤
If anyone had doubts about Paula Cole, watch a later video in this tour singing In Your Eyes…….
The best version !
When I saw what you sent me, I looked her up and found this, which reminded me of us. Please know that I have always, will always love you and want you by my side❤. You are forever a part of me and like this says, there’s a place for us❤❤❤thank you❤🌹
This is how angels sing.
She really did a great job.Amazing performance!❤🌹👍🏼
Paula Coles range is incredible
What an incredibly beautiful woman.
Don’t be embarrassed.
This is a concert and not a beauty contest.
@@ottschi63 I predicted as I wrote my comment that there would be ‘one’ and here you are. I don’t recall there being a rule saying one has to be at a beauty contest in order to be struck by physical beauty. Why should I be embarrassed. You should learn to logic.
The original studio version is amazing...the Willie Nelson cover with Sinead O'Connor equally so...but this one is the bee's knees, the best of the bunch. Makes me shed a tear or two the way Paula sings her parts. Bravo
Makes me cry. Such a deep connection for me and paula cole has a hardline to my heart.
Paula Cole was brought in at the last moment when Sinead O'Conner became unable to continue the tour. Here you can see she is tense and concentrating very seriously on her parts. When Peter gives her the nod of "well-done", her face brightens immeasurably for the rest of the song. She definately put her own stamp/interpretation on the song. It's not useful to compare to Kate Bush or Sinead. All have their merits. Very cool!
Peter dodged a bullet not getting Sinead.
This was my first time seeing Peter live. Literally the best show I've ever witnessed. It's as if he sat in every seat and experienced it from every angle in order to make it the best experience possible for his fans. Just magic. The DVD lived in my player for at least a year, I'll never tire of him as an artist.
EXTRAORDINARIA PAULA COLE!!!. lo mejor que podia estar junto a Peter
Love Peter Gabriel's music... but this visit was for Paula
No, Paula is not Kate Bush. What she is, is AMAZING. Wow!
Absolutely beautiful ❤️ please don’t give up ❤️
I saw this show in Philly
Absolutely amazing
Omg Paula is absolutely outstanding. Way to go girl 👍🙏👏
Brought a tear to my eye. I remember the economic collapse in the rust belt and the midwest of the 80s. This kind of grief was everywhere.
This was a song that captured a time, and its mood. Well said!
Unemployment in Alliance Ohio in the 80s was over 25 % at times and that was among the people that did not move away ....
This entire concert kept me alive while working in Tokyo one summer, 3 months. I had the DVD, and I went out and bought me a Steinberg Spirit at the music store in Makuhari, with a Line 6 Pod 2.0 and some headphones. THis is one of the greatest live shows ever choreographed, filmed, and recorded!
That night she was a Goddess.
She's pure
She does an amazing job.
It’s beautiful .. and I love Paula’s singing .. stunning song !
It's sure not Kate
Well that was a surprise. Came up on my RUclips. Gabriel and Cole what a perfect match for this number.
ich finde den Song so extrem schön bis heute sind solche Songs einfach unauffindbar diese zeit damals war eine meine Schönsten Zeiten die Musik damals war und ist unwiderruflich die schönste Musik.
Saw Peter perform live several times, this never gets old, great performance of both
You are one lucky person to see him live. It’s on my bucket list if he ever comes to Ontario , Canada 🇨🇦
Absolutely beautiful.
Fantastic performance…
big song for me.... brings me back and still speaks to me in day
WOW. Awesome vocals from both.
Since discovering this vocal performance a few months ago I find I have to listen and view it every couple of days. Astoundingly perfect!
A poetic conversation 👏🏼👏🏼
Power in her voice
While I love what Kate Bush did with this song and the motion she put in her version. Paula is so beautiful in this version. She Reminds me of Eva Cassidy in some ways.
Full body goosebumps from this one, and it's not even my favourite number from this time.
Was für eine Frau, was für eine Stimme 💗💗💗💗💗💗
Absolutely Beautiful ❤️……..
I don't know how many times I've watched this concert, but I keep coming back for more!
Paula Cole OWNS THIS SONG. Just make this the official video of Don't Give Up. you know it's true !
Their facial expressions at the end of song, they know they nailed it !
It's not true. Kate Bush owns this song. Everyone else is second place at best, although Paula makes a really good second place.
Paula was never interested in playing the Game. This vocal shows how stunning her voice was.
goosebumps all over my body❤❤
Never heard of her until this very moment. Great voice.
That's fun. First listen.
Paula Cole is stunning.
Far better than K. Bush
Unbelievably gorgeous, thanks for that ...
Beautiful clear voice of Paula contrasts with Peter.
02:21 made my whole body goose the bump
INCREDIBLE! 2023?!
This tune runs through my mind when everyone around me are losing their minds. Great tunes let us see different angles on the lyrics. Tough times are universal. You may now place your selector switch on full auto. The down range area is no longer clear!
Music is a healer, I needed to hear this so much today!
This is far more than a song ,it’s us all of us ,we have been there,,the strength of two……
Never knew who Paula Cole was but my goodness Peter Gabriel could not have picked a better and moe classy lady.
Perfect fit and my goodness they need to do a new tour together!
She had actually replaced the late Sinead O'Connor just days before this show was recorded.
Trying to not give up. This helps a little. 😢
HE knows how good it was. That's all that matters...
what did happend with 30 years? , Well I´m still love this song.
cause peter is timeless..
@@navagugutzer101 yes, and old fashioned me prefers kate bust alongside

This is a stunning version of an astonishing song 😌🙏🏼
That voice, love it
Just simply wow. !
A masterpiece of Musik 🙏👌🌏
Visto il concerto al Palasport di Firenze!!! Insuperabile!!!!
