    Second year ERC student here. Despite the somewhat infamous reputation of ERC's general education requirements (GE's), the Making of the Modern World (MMW) series is really the only notable feature. MWW, however, is a fairly unique animal - I don't think of it as a pure history course, but rather a cultures/global interactions series. The whole series is 5 classes, MMW 11 - 15, with the second two classes being worth 6 units (2 more units than standard). Note that the first three classes in the series MUST BE TAKEN SUCCESSIVELY, do not skip MMW 11,12, or 13 unless you want to wait a whole year for the class to be available again. There are several professors who teach the series and you are encouraged to jump between them, but it isn't unusual for students to pick their favorite prof and stick with them. If you enjoy, or have some talent for, writing then MWW will be an interesting challenge. If you absolutely despise writing or reading about historical cultures then maybe pick a different college.
    Edit: Fixed some information that was out of date. Thanks Chang.

    So to sum up:
    Revelle- GE's require one of each science. large windows, right next to academic buildings, Asian food, far away from everywhere. No one likes this place.
    Muir- coffee shop, Hawaiian barbecue, vegan food, GE's aren't terrible, 20min of walking away from beach, near the middle of campus
    Sixth- newest dorms, concrete floor is made of concrete floor, dining hall has five stations, GE's are easy
    Marshall- dorms divided between residence halls and apartments, pizza, GE's are ok
    ERC- Everyone hates their MMW writing course, international students and allegedly near the good parties, Latin American food, next to a gym, relatively far
    Seventhy- far from everything, all dorms are apartments, sushi, GE"s are pretty good,
    Warren- Dorms are far, Mongolian food, all food is halal, all the engineering buildings are there, so good for the engineering majors but not great for everyone else

    Hi, Sean. Great Video. My son got in UCSD Sixth college. Really liked your video. We also opted colleges randomly not knowing the details. We are much inclined to accept UCSD over some very good other collages he got in. The issue is he didn't got his major Computer Science, instead got it as undeclared. Is it possible for him to change the major to CS if he acquired the pre requisites and staying in sixth college, will in anyway help him in that?

    I’m a Junior Transfer in ERC and I definitely didn’t do my research on the colleges because after completing the transfer MMW series I have to say that these courses are some of the worst the school has to offer. In reality it’s a writing, history, and philosophy class all wrapped up in several useless readings and assignments. I definitely recommend people to consider a different college, even the dorms are the on the most north point of campus making everyday another speed run.

      @@oeowowowowiei6412 I genuinely don’t like the MMW courses at all, I think overall the college is fine but I think if you have better options available you should go with that. Now it isn’t so bad that you’re gonna drop out, it just feels like a waste of a class. If you’re a freshman you’ll be basically taking this course six times since UCSD is a quarter system. If you’re a transfer you’ll take it twice. I think ERC as a college is fine and you might enjoy the courses so I would go with whatever you think is right, plus if you’re a freshman you can possibly transfer colleges.

    • @seanthesheep
      @seanthesheep  2 года назад +1

      Yeah the GE requirements are a lot different for transfers; I think Revelle is the best for STEM majors followed by Muir based on what upperclassmen have said

    • @jheaespares2981
      @jheaespares2981 2 года назад +5

      Hello fellow transfer graduate here! The amount of GEs/lower division classes you will be taking as a transfer will depend on how many ucsd-required classes you weren't able to take at your CC - for example, some CCs don't offer a class or two especially if a lower div requirement from ucsd is super specific and exclusive. If you've completed all your IGETC requirements during your time in CC, you won't have to worry about re-taking them once you transfer to ucsd.
      *However*, some colleges have GE requirements and tracks for transfers (i.e. Marshall has a writing course requirement for all students, etc. - not talking about DOC btw) that are specific and unavailable in CCs so those would be the GEs you will have to take at ucsd on top of your required major courses (lower and upper div courses). When in doubt, ask a department/college counselor. Let me know if you have other questions!

      I also got into Revelle for this fall, I just accepted our fate as Inter-transferring to another college to UCSD still requires us to do 2 years of Humanites( arguably the worst part of revelle’s GEs) even so only ur best bet is to transfer to sixth after doing the ICT to transfer. Though I found a good perspective where people said humanities helped them especially for graduate school for a master or even PhD.

    • @seanthesheep
      @seanthesheep  2 года назад +6

      Congrats on the acceptance, and Muir is really good!
      GE-wise, their writing program is short but apparently quite rigorous. It's only 2 quarters long (other colleges are 3 or 5 quarters long), but the first one has 3 essays with increasing difficulty, and the second one has a 10-page research paper. Other than writing, the other GEs are very light compared to other colleges.
      Dorm-wise, their exterior is kind of grey and depressing, but on the inside, I heard they're somewhat nice; they also have an ocean view. The dorms are among the oldest, but their apartment building is fairly new, if you get put in there. More importantly, Muir is basically at the center of campus, so you don't have to walk as far as others do to your classes.

And the writing courses weren't too bad if you have some background in AP English classes or just try. In addition, Muir's location is great in terms of its relative distance from everything including Sixth nicer restaurants while also being really close to the math, chemistry, and humanities building. Its also only 10 mins from the center hall and price center/library which is actually pretty great compared to colleges like Seventh. Congratulations on your acceptance, but, uh, Revelle isn't that good.
      GE-wise, Revelle perhaps has among the most GEs. They require you to take five quarters of natural sciences (including one of chem, phys, bio) I believe (I might be wrong here). They also have five quarters of writing classes (other colleges have two or three), and the writing classes aren't that easy either, including a five-page paper on the Bible. UCSD only lets you transfer colleges if you can show that it lets you graduate a year early, and most of these transfers are from Revelle apparently.
      Their dorms are the oldest on campus, though their insides were renovated in 2014. Their apartments are new and have an ocean view. However, they're right next to the Eighth College construction, so it's quite noisy. They're also at the southwestern corner of campus, which is rather far.
      Revelle is a bit better if you're a natural science major, and their GEs are pretty nice for transfers I think, but otherwise, it's not good.

      Also, Marshall's writing program is really nice because it has contract-based grading, where at the beginning of the quarter, you can write very easy requirements for an A as part of your contract, and then you just need to show improvement to get an A. In contrast, Sixth's writing sequence grades based on how good your essays are

    is warren any good ??

    • @seanthesheep
      @seanthesheep  2 года назад +3

      Warren is an okay college.
      Dorm-wise, it's pretty bad. The dorms are very old. The suites are pretty big, and the suite bathrooms are like public bathrooms with not that much privacy compared to other colleges. Warren itself is also very far from everyone else.
      GE-wise, they're not bad, especially if you're an engineering major, in which case you have 6 fewer courses to take compared to non-engineering majors. Their writing sequence is also pretty nice; it's only two quarters long, and they have contract-based grading, so at the beginning of the quarter you can just put simple requirements for you to get an A, and then you just need to show improvement to get an A.
      Because their GEs are very good for engineers, and all the engineering buildings are in Warren, Warren is pretty much entirely of engineering majors, so Warren has a stereotype of not taking showers and smelling

      @@metalkent1460 Changing majors is very easy (just a single click of a button) and instant, with some caveats.
      Popular majors (engineering, computer science, and biology) are capped, so they have an application process that usually involves first taking some screening courses, and only a number of people are let in.
      Also, when you have a certain number of units (like junior/senior year), you'll have to submit a quarter-by-quarter plan if you want to switch majors

      Seventh College is a good college overall; it has very light GEs compared to other colleges. When you live on campus for the first year or two, you'll be far from the center of campus though, but at least you'll get an apartment, which has a kitchen
