India-China Rivalry And Why It’s Not Just About A Disputed Border |

  • The notion that China does not see India as a rival is nonsensical, argues Sumit Ganguly, Professor of Political Science at the Indiana University in Bloomington, who has co-authored a book titled ‘Sino-Indian Rivalry’. Speaking to StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale on ‘The Gist’, Prof. Ganguly said China is increasingly concerned about Indian growing closeness to the United States and that the India-China and US-China rivalries have become interconnected. Security analyst Major General Dipankar Banerjee (Retd) who was also part of the discussion was of the view that although India’s infrastructure along the boundary with China has got a significant boost, the China challenge will remain so India needs to be prepared in multifarious dimensions.

That doesn’t give a right and walk over to china .. they wont .. i know you would probably say with confidence that china is too advanced and strong for india.. there are way too many factors and there wont be a large scale outright war without global implications.. on battles for this silky dispute , china will be challenged seriously .. even considering a limited war and even with greater *numbers* in all respects .. preconceived notions ate bad for thinking minds .. is that a Chinese proverb?

It’s funny, you say that. Nobody in India cared about China before Galwan, trust me. There is no jealousy at all because if today China’s is high in GDP, that is admirable, and Indians are humble and willing to give credit where it is due..but what people hate is China’s utter duplicity and expansionist policy. Also know that things change (chest thumping of being ahead is silly) and India will in the top three soon, and may match China in 15-20 years. Because of ageing, China won’t grow like this forever. Being ahead doesn’t mean that China’s duplicity will not be challenged by righteousness countries.

For friends in India, China started to open and reform in 1978. At that time Chinese per capita was 5 cents a day while India's was on $2 a day. And now China is $12000 a year. And China these days is totally and completely preoccupied with the goal to attain $20000 by 2030 and $30000-40000 by 2040, with the overall view to achieve $50000-60000 by 2049. And anything else will be by the way, to facilitate this goal to attain Developed status by 2049. It took China 8 very painful years to build the Nanjing Yangtze River bridge in 1968. But now, China leads the world by far on infrastructures. And no one is even close these days. Now China pioneers on 4th generation nuclear power plants, as well as the first nuke powered container ship. On defence, when India deployed 200000 troops on the border south of the lake few years ago, China only stationed 2-3 border brigades. A leader has to have the ability to deescalate and defuse tensions and hostilities when needed while being prepared to respond appropriately. These days the biggest dilemma of US defence specialists is not the aircraft carrier killers or the stealth nuke powered submarines. They are scratching their heads because a war against China will abruptly end after few weeks if very lucky. Or otherwise only days when supply runs out. Specialists in UK concur on the same conclusion. According to US experts China is building 200 times more navy vessels than the US every year right now. And if the US wishes, China can oblige to increase these to 500-1000 times. China is most definitely racing against China only. There is no one else, even close.

A group of figures stood out from Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's remarks at an annual press conference on Thursday as offering a sobering reminder of challenges to prop up the economy amid the raging pandemic.
The rare mention indicates the government's focus on average folk wellbeing that has inevitably taken a hit from the virus onslaught, analysts said, expecting the eye-catching numbers to be translated into massive growth opportunities for the world's largest developing nation.
China is a populous developing nation with an average per capita income of 30,000 yuan ($4,196.33) per annum, but *600 million people have a monthly income of only 1,000 yuan. With 1,000 yuan, it might be difficult to rent a home in a mid-sized city*, which is now compounded by the coronavirus outbreak, the premier told reporters, noting that people's livelihood is of utmost significance post-COVID-19.

One speaker said it correctly. A real concern is that India continues the approach and mindset of British colonial power. Looking at what India has been doing since its independence, it annexed a small state (Sikkim) and has been bullying all neighbors, meddling internal affairs of Bhutan and Nepal, occupying the land that Britain invaded and conquered from small kingdoms and countries, fighting wars with China and Pakistan. Yet, India tells others that it wants to be a world leader. People India needs to think really hard on what roles India wants to play on the world stage.
For the boarder disputes with China, British colonial power invaded China, Chinese government at the time rejected the British occupation of southern Tibet and other lands, and reaffirmed Chinese claims after WWII in 1945 and published the official map of China in 1947 when India was not yet an independent nation. India today still occupies the lands that British colonialism took illegally.
De-colonizing is a right thing that India should and must do and respects the neighbors for the world peace and Indian prosperity.

Many people see US-India relations 'improvement' as a direct result of the US wanting to use India as a nuisance (balance some say) to China's obviously disconcerting (to US) rising comprehensive national power. The US and the west in general more or less tolerates India just for that. It's not a sudden show of love for Indians. How long will that last?

Xi ruined China's economic momentum with purges and autocracy. West is shifting their factories from China to India, Vietnam, Indonesia etc. So this trend will last for long as Xi is going to Mao path after 4 decades of China following Deng Xiaoping's liberal economic reforms path.

The US is so desperate and frustrated that it is too late and the US has simply given up to race. If India is still keen to race ahead, then perhaps the US can still serve as a nice and easy target to work on.

India -China rivalry? Jaishankar has made it clear there is no such question. Smaller economy cannot take on a bigger economy even in the crucial field of defense of one's territorial integrity. He had made this clear in his media interview sometime ago. Many would tend to agree with him from a pure pragmatic rationalistic point of view. In fact some would more then agree. Hence Modi's abject surrender, "Koi Ghusa Nhi ". But his media team is on a war footing elsewhere. A propaganda of impending war with China doesn't stop. This is however enough to fool foolish people. To be someone's rival one has to pass a few tests. Modi has backed out.

China believes that for India to be truly independent there needs to be a civil revolution and political blood needs to be shed. This will define what India is including its character language, culture etc.
From that a new social contract would emerge between the Indian people and its rulers.
Similar to the Chinese revolution which replaced monarchy with Communism.
Only then will China accept India's role in the Global world order. Till then they will view India as a continuation of the British Empire.
The above is from articles in the Global Times.

India - China border dispute is a gift from British imperialists. They knowingly included much of Chinese territories within India without any discussion with the Chinese.
The border dispute is serving their interest.
The USA is desperately trying to halt China's rise by cutting their market access. Huawei is one case, others are Chinese EVs, photovoltic cells etc.
China will definitely surpass USA GDP but it will be delayed due to various sanctions and trecherous behaviours.
It is easy for the USA to romp home India exploiting border disputes.
This is all happening failing to compete with the Chinese technological progress through innovations.

"As to the Chinese Government official's statement made in 1847 to the British representative that this section of the boundary was clear" ( Letter of Chou En-lai to Nehru 8th Sept, 1959).
It is clear from the letter that Aksai Chin boundary was well defined but Chinese changed their mind after Nehru surrendered Tibet with the Panch Sheel agreement of 1954.
1842-Aksai Chin Agreement with independent Tibet during "China's century of shame" is similar to 1858-The Treaty of Aigun & 1860 -treaty in which Russia obtained over 900,000 sq.km of Chinese territory. All 3 agreements done during that period are legally valid.
On the Eastern Sector, McMahon Line, frontier between Tibet and Assam in British India was negotiated between Tibet and Great Britain at the end of the Shimla Conference (October 1913-July 1914)
Both the agreements are well defined with then independent state of Tibet.

China could subdue other nations but not India & that changed the world:
(1)When Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was awarded Nobel Prize in 2010 in Norway, China banned imports of Norwegian salmon fish, Norway’s major export & Norway pleaded helplessness.
    (2) In 2012, China took control of Vietnam’s Paracel Islands & Vietnam could only protest,
    (3) In 2012, China refused to vacate Philippines' Scarborough shoal island violating an agreement negotiated by Obama & Obama abandoned the US Security Treaty Partner Philippines.
    (4) In 2013 China established “East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone” over Japan’s Senkaku island & Japan only protested.
(5)That encouraged China to stealthily occupy Spratly Islands in April, 2015 to get control of strategic Indo-Pacific oceanic passage,
    (6) Instead of demanding China's withdrawal, Xi Jinping was given welcome visit to White House where on Sept 25, 2015 he promised not to militarize illegally annexed Spratly Islands.! Xi then militarized them within 2 yrs.
    (7) On the Afghan front, China bled US & Nato in blood & treasure through its proxy Pakistan, got strategic CPEC access to Indian Ocean & finally handed them humiliating Afghan expulsion.
    (8) China clandestinely helped N. Korea get nuclear-missile capability to hit US mainland converting it into successful Cuba of 1962.

    (A) No body could physically block the belligerent Communist except India. In 2017, when China illegally entered Doklam to threaten India’s North-East. It was physical blockage of Chinese Communist Army by Indian Army plus rise of Indian people to boycott Chinese goods which made 400 Chinese Managers jobless with 30% drop in VIVO & OPPO sales within 2 weeks, that alarmed nervous China.
Trump finally took hint & in 2018 put 25% tariffs on 6,800 Chinese goods worth whopping $250Bn & sent his Pacific fleet to physically challenge belligerent Communist in the SCS.
    (B) Again when India was under Covid-19 lock down from April 2020, Xi thinking Coronavirus highly contagious, non-treatable & very fatal causing Wuhan-type economic standstill invaded Ladakh. Again rapid blockage of Communist Army by Indian Army despite raging pandemic put spanners in Xi Jinping’s dream of having garden walk into PoK to secure CPEC.
US realized importance of India & upgraded QUAD. India earned its place. Two QUAD countries Australia &Japan are linked through bilateral security treaties with the US. India stands out as an independent nuclear weapons power with large military that does not need the US treaty of mutual defense but can strengthen QUAD both in Indo-Pacific ocean region & by pinning down Communist army along entire 3,500km long Indo-Tibetan border.

But there is not even a competition. This whole 'rivalry' talk is just make-pretend at this point.

No UK and Mogul colonisation, India will not exist like 500 years ago, in this subcontinent, over 700 kingdoms here, so why India still has 780 different languages today.

Indians hate the British and want to become British colonists and enslave the small surrounding countries. The small countries surrounding India are either on the way to becoming vassal states of India or have been annexed by India.

India's economy is 1/5 that of China- hardly a cmpetitor to China.
Will the US support India in a China-India war?
Most definitely- the US will provide just enough supportto stop India from losing.
India's best option is to negotiate the border issue and get on with building its economy.
Otherwise it will be another two generation of low growth.

The ideology the path and the norms between China and India are two very different. In that note india should not be naive to be friend with Chine just for mere short term interest, which unfortunately Nepal is heading into.

Japan, Vietnam, ang even Taiwan have border/ security problem with China, but thouse countries keep and maintain good economy and people to people relations with China... Why India does not have the same attitude, and direct its policy towards win-win cooperation... It's India that makes the condition even more dificult than it should be... India is more emotional than rational (compared to China) and the 3rd parties interest (USA & western countries) jump to it (to devide India & China) for their advantage

Utter Nonsese. Where do you get such Narratives that China feel insecure of India Rise. China is too busy with its OBR, BRICS and SCO whereby Moldy endeavor to obstruct its development. Xi is not bothered with Moldy incompetence and inferiority. There is war when Moldy crosses the thin red line. Moldy shivering in his pants when it happened. Afterall, Moldy sold India Wholesale to the US as a vassal state with all access under the US Corruption Scheme to enrich his deep pockets of corruption. He embroiled India into the US Quicksand Entrapment and dancing under the US Puppet Strings. All said and done. The US Corruption Scheme controls India.

Let's not adapt the zero sum game of the West. India and China were wealthy nations of the olds without having to fight each other. A stable India means a peaceful neighborhood for China. And a stable China also means a peaceful neighborhood for India. From a Chinese, my best wishes to India and may you continue to prosper.
And remember this adage. "To be an enemy of American can be dangers, but to be a friend is fatal."
