Is he grifting himself into Catholicism or some other sect of Christianity? He's partnered with the Catholic prayer app, but he's asking for people to talk about their experience being baptized...almost any non-convert Catholic would have been baptized as a baby and would not have any memory of it.
I remember noticing that Russell Brand "rebranded" himself and seemed to be playing into the hot conspiracies of the time and it got him a lot of views. I think it was the Q-Anon thing. All of a sudden it seemed like he was pushing all of the conspiracy buttons to get views. Anything to make a buck.

As a 'cradle Catholic' I am disgusted at people like him. I grew into atheism in my 20s 50 odd years ago but still hate seeing Christianity being abused by these grifters. And for Brand's information he might think he looks like the standard western Jesus but Josuah, to give him his proper Jewish name, likely looked nothing like the western european version wuth which he is familiar. The late Magnus Magnuson did a documentary years ago and said the Roman wanted poster described him as short, stooped and very dark skinned. So he must have had a charismatic personality to inspire people to believe he was the messiah who would overthrow the Romans. Of course it turned out that, like so many others who made the claim, he wasnt the Jewish messiah but his name was latinised and used to create a relugion which would persecute his people ever after.

Like... on so many levels. Granted, I'm Canadian, so generally by the time a lot of the weirdest elements got up North, I don't know if they broke down in the cold or what, but the church I grew up in and the Christians I knew in my formative years in the 90s, they were reasonably sane people with some beliefs that with more life experience kinda fall apart if you think about them too much. But like... they didn't crave being pandered to. Like, sure there was Christian Rock, but at least early on a lot of that came ouf of the Jesus people USA movement which were like a bunch of pot heads and stoners. Even if a lot of these bands were just youth group friends who were trying to have the same sort of sound as a lot of secular bands, there was still a certain level of authenticity to it.
But it feels like now Evangelicalism and Catholicism in the US in particular seem like they've moved into this post-authentic "If we can't have the world, no one can!" Grift like attitude.
You know, honestly even when I was growing up I guess there was probably more grifting going on than I realized. But there were a lot of people with deeply held sincere belief.
I think blaming Trump for it isn't fair because so much of the seeding of this libertarian-selfish asshole verion of Christianity was sown long ago. But... man, it feels like post 2016, Evangelicals and Catholics have just become the biggest assholes. It's like their whole lives now are as honest as a Kirk Cameron video. Like it's just "This is what we do now, and we refuse to think about why we do what we do, because if we take a second to think... we're gonna feel so fuckin' dirty."
It's a shame too. Because when Christianity isn't this politicized shit show, there's a lot to like in it's teachings. But at this point I feel like the modern Evangelical and Catholic churches are the biggest proof against the existence of God. Like these people all believe that they've prayed and asked God to forgive their sins and cleanse them... then why can't we see that? Why can't we see a movement of Christians being more honest? Standing up against things like wealth inequality, the murdering of civilians? There is no God redeeming the church, because the church just keeps getting worse.
I'm so sad, I was such a big fan of Russel with him giving a platform to Eckhart Tolle and other great teachers. What is happening in the world...

I actually believed in God until I went to jail. Spent alot of time reading books and articles about my purpose on this planet. When they asked me if I felt better and if I understood things, and I replied that I hadn't it shocked them. God's plan was for me to come to earth Serve others, give money to the church, spread the gospel and then spend my time praying, reading Bible versus and accept Jesus as my savior who died for me even though I didn't as him too, then feel guilted into all the aforementioned conditions so I can go to heaven? What a crappy plan. Needless to say they didn't talk theology with me any more
