  • In this video I play around with my nanoVNA to check the response of the telescopic antenna often sold together with the HackRF.

    Thank you for another great video. Very useful information.
    I would like to give you idea for new project. It's actually something what Im playing with right now as a real RF noob :-)
    The project/challange is to get cheap wireless door bell and use the OOK encoder which is included in the Mayhem firmware to ring the bell. I used SDR to find the signal and than Universal radio hacker software to record it and decode it. Once you decode the signal and obtain the bit code you can program the OOK encoder and ring the bell...

    You are amazing teacher. I hope you will do very well in your channel (1M+ subs). Get your HAM licence when you can as you will be a great asset to the Amateur Radio community and electronic hobbiest Good luck my friend. 73

    Have you tried testing these antennas using an addition of a ground plane? When Rubber duck antennas are used in portable radios the hand holding the radio can act as a a ground plane. I did see someone use a VNA with a small fabricated ground plane metal plate and I'm going to experiment myself with one on my Mini1300.

    A random question - in the description of the channel it says you are from france, but are You French or from Nordics?Sorry for this silly question. Just keeps my mind boggling.

    Hey, could you make a havok vs mayhen video? Thank you, i am very curious on those since my hackrf is coming soon:D

    • @therfnoob7697
      @therfnoob7697  4 года назад +5

      Hi! The two are not really in competition. Basically the Mayhem project was cloned from the Havoc a few weeks ago (so at the moment they have VERY SIMILAR functionalities) . The fact is that the Havoc development is stuck, while the Mayhem project basically has collected the individuals/coders that are currently active and can push the project forward. So, basically Mayhem starts where Havoc stopped!
      I hope you receive your hackrf soon and start to have fun! :)

    I am confused here. Is this unit any good for adjusting my antennas for receiving on my Hack RF? I don't care about transmitting at all. When I hear about return loss and all that but that sounds too much like you are transmitting.

    • @therfnoob7697
      @therfnoob7697  4 года назад +2

      Hi FlyMario! The return loss is caused by a mismatch between the HackRF impedance (50ohm) and the antenna impedance at a given frequency f (Z_f). The mismatch causes reflections when you transmit (and these reflections heat up your HackRF and can even damage it). But, symmetrically, it causes reflections also on the antenna side. This means that part of the signal you'd like to hear, is reflected back to the antenna and it's not going to your radio. This means you are losing in sensitivity. So having a good matched antenna is a good thing also in receive mode.

    Is the cable to the "cheap magnetic antenna" playing a role in the chaos?

    • @therfnoob7697

      hard to say, but it's possible. It's definitely a 'cheap cable' :D

    ciao , scusami se ne approfitto , ho letto che sei molto preso, potrei chiederti che tipo di batteria esterna usi per alimentare l'hackrf nel video, voltaggio , etc , grazie ,

      Ciao! E' una powerbank (da 3-4 euro, comprata su aliexpress) USB standard. L'hackRF, funzionando da USB, necessita di 5V di voltaggio. Qualsiasi powerbank USB funziona bene.

      @@therfnoob7697 Intanto grazie per la tua gentilezza, ho visto parecchi powerbank con uscita a 5v , e ne vorrei acquistare uno , tra 1 ampere , 2 ampere o 3 ampere , ce n’è un amperaggio migliore oppure l’ampereggio non conta nulla

    • @therfnoob7697
      @therfnoob7697  3 года назад

      @@rik2128 1ampere basta. Considera che l'hackrf e' cme un piccolo raspberry con output radio da 10mw, quindi consuma relativamente poco! :) la mia powerbank (batteria + adattatore usb che converte il voltaggio a 5v) come ti dicevo e' costata in tutto pochissimi ero su aliexpress :)

      @@therfnoob7697 che dire , grazie per la tua disponibilità , ne aproffitto per degl’ultini consigli :
      1. Nelle impostazioni del portapack , c’è una funzione chiamata AMP è impostata su 0 , e si può mettere su 1 , e tipo il bias che si abilità senza antenna autoalimenta si fanno danni ?
      2. Comprando un antenna alimentata si aumenta solo in trasmissione oppure in ricezione ? In caso me ne consiglieresti una . Grazie

    why do you think the values from the HackRF on the mayhem os for antenna lengths ain't precise? 18:07
    Do you think they just grabbed them out of their a'zz
    it ain't rocket science to measure the length of a given antenna to conclude at what value it would resonate... so likely not there the error is.
    and I also got one, though from some years back..

      yeah it's not rocket science. Of course they suggest good candidate 'lengths' for each frequency, but really the whip antenna will not be particularly good at most of those.

    Hihihihi , so there are many things that we have to talk about :) ....at the end you say 330mm instead of 37.3 :) Anyway this nanovna is a joke I hope you realize it.I make my antennas and test them with a RIGEXPERT AA-600 (google and see the difference) ,Smith chart is important .All of those antennas that you test them are pieces of.....Remember as I said before : ANTENNA IS IMPORTANT !!! You will never ever obtain a good TX-RX with those ....pseudo-antennas.It is a looooot to discuss about antennas .73!

    • @therfnoob7697
      @therfnoob7697  4 года назад +5

      I know I know :) I make several mistakes while I record videos and talk in english, half of my brain is occupied by that!
      Regarding the nanoVNA. I agree that there are better VNA (and they can cost thousands of usd) but the nanoVNA is not a "joke". The S11 measurements are quite accurate, actually (Check out my episode 33 for a proof). In this video I only showed the SWR (which is proportional to the magnitude of the S11) but you can also plot the smith chart (magnitude + phase information). In this video I only talked about the SWR for simplicity, for for those interested I discussed the complex numbers math in Episode 35.
      Regarding antennas... of course here we are talking about super-cheap antennas... of course there are much better ones around. But there are also much better SDR than the HackRF... the idea is to have fun and learn with what we have at hand, and I think the HackRF+nanoVNA are great for learning.
