    A metal review channel that does not make me want to gouge my eyes and ears out? Could it be?
    All jokes aside, great review for a great record. I was in the Grand Tetons for Fire in the Mountains in July and I miss that place something fierce. I believe Wintherr himself stated once that he though Burzum lost its way (paraphrasing here, so don't quote me) and wanted to take that sound to its conclusion, which, to his credit, he did. And I think he perfected it with this record.

      Hahaha I'm honored. Yeah I have a lot of friends who went to FitM and they even did a video discussing how great it was: ruclips.net/video/o39d0uuWAjA/видео.html. The organizer said there won't be another until at least 2024 but I absolutely have to go.
      Oh definitely, the Burzum influence is both obvious and explicit. Something I've always appreciated about both PdH and Burzum is that even though overall they're trying to craft a cohesive atmosphere, they don't neglect the importance of a catchy riff.

    I remember listening to Offenbarung through earbuds whilst racing down a mountain during a blizzard...almost killed myself but it was the most exhilarating experience I've ever had
    Great review and great album - I know it's heresy but I sometimes find myself wishing it was recorded in high fidelity so I could listen to it in noisier environments because it gets drowned out unless you turn the volume right up but that ends up destroying your ears

    • @AveMors

      Man, that does sound like a surefire way to make you appreciate the album in a new light.
      I actually don’t blame you at all. He’s really made poor production work well for him, but there’s definitely always room for improvement. Especially since he really does put a lot of detail into his songs. Im Wald has slightly better production in my opinion, but it’s still extremely raw.

      _Steineiche_ has always been his magnum opus and _Im Wald_ (while still solid) was overhyped by Rate Your Music. If anything needs more appreciation, it’s the former

    • @AveMors
      @AveMors  2 года назад +2

      @@Judge_Holden First of all, awesome username. Blood Meridian is my favorite book ever. Steineiche is a really interesting record, especially with that one track that's almost death/doom. I've never heard anyone say it's their favorite so that's really cool.

      The judge smiled.
      Jokes aside, _Steineiche_ is my favorite musical (and perhaps artistic, period) work of all time; I hadn’t hitherto heard any kind of music which would as brilliantly translate into aural form a vision of gradual decay from sonic violence towards what is ultimately pure yet deliberate stagnation. It starts off with a chaotic, 20‐minute blizzard of an ambient black metal symphony that could even be said to consist of four movements (not unlike actual classical music) and for which Wintherr clearly went all‐out, followed by straight‐up funeral doom metal with ambient black metal undertones and production, then a behemoth of surprisingly varied dark ambient, and finally just the bleak and lifeless forest winds with no music barring a brief moment of clarity before it ends with the same desolation in which it began; in other words, the work overall evokes the clear image of a lone wanderer trudging through a cruel snowstorm while struggling to stay alive, then lost within the now calmer snowy forest at nightfall without knowing where to go, and finally freezing to death to become one with nature and the winter but not without a faint glimmer of hope for new life at the very end-even without the need for lyrics (which, I might add, are very poetic and vividly written).
      There is a clear pattern here with the pacing, and structurally it is like the logical conclusion to (and I would argue perfection of) _Hvis lyset tar oss_ by Burzum. Not only that, but despite the demo’s eclectic nature with its incorporation of different genres, none of it feels shoehorned or contrived; each track still feels like it could be a different chapter of the same piece, and cohesion is retained. All the more impressive is that not only was this Wintherr’s first ever work that we know of, but he was also only 19 years old during production.
      As for the legacy of _Steineiche_ as mentioned: surprisingly, on Encyclopaedia Metallum it is the highest rated work of Paysage d’Hiver to date, where it had accumulated an astounding 98% out of 7 reviews-even surpassing the self‐titled demo by 1% (although it has one review less). I’m actually not sure if there is a single release on the website’s entire catalogue with a higher average rating. Outside of that particular community, though? I hardly _ever_ see it mentioned. Strange.
      Excuse the mini‐review, but my god is _Steineiche_ just brilliant.

    Really Peak Paysage d´Hiver. All his experience with the previous records, was completed here in perfection. The high point in this case also means, that it never got as good again after that. You could really tell from the last two albums. Maybe he should have ended the project with "Das Tor".
