UNBOXING Fake PRS from China

  • My third PRS chinese copy guitar and fourth guitar from China un-boxing and playing straight from the box without any modifications or set up.
    So again on this one similar to Maggie [See first PRless vid] there are issues with the frets with some high/low frets causing buzz and insufficient neck relief adding to the problem.
    I will probably use this guitar to put up some demo videos on how to set up and cure the issues she has.
    In the meantime I need names for this guitar and your suggestions are very welcome...
    For more info on guitar stuff and particularly Chinese made copy guitars please do take a moment to view my channel@ / chinaguitarsceptic

    I enjoy your videos. I bought a Les Paul Standard from a Chinese builder that was much better than the real 2015 Standard that went back to Guitar center. I do my set ups because how in the world would anyone know what I like. Most off a fret buzz is just an adjustment. I put a new bone nut on my new real Gibson Studio. I went with a brass nut on my Chinese Standard. I can say my Chinese Standard is a 100% in all categories. I picked it to death and it is great. Thank you for helping me grow ball to order one.

    Thanks for your videos, I have been through more than a few Chinese guitars and you are voicing all of the pros and cons that I have experienced. I have a gorgeous 00045+ that plays and sound very good and another all Koa Dreadnaught that I have sanded off the finish and the sound has improved 100% on that one. My favorite though came from a seller named Sean who kept me posted with pics and details all along the way and had been recommended by lots of buyers. The guitar is excellent and it is reminiscent of a 50s Kay but not an exact copy. Keep up the great vids.

      Thank you brother I'm so happy when people actually get me and the point of my channel. I'm not anti Chinese just anti trademark infringement and anti ripping people off. Way too much illegal rubbish coming out of China when they could be making Harley Benton type quality and building quality brands of their own.

    Hi there, I've watched a few of your vids and I'd like to say thanks for making an impartial video on the build quality and sound of these guitars. Videos about these counterfeit guitars seem to promote a lot of ranting and shouting and people denouncing one another. Having seen your videos and others I think I'll give these a miss, but I wanted to say thanks for being genuinely informative!

  • @Chinaguitarsceptic
    @Chinaguitarsceptic  11 лет назад +1

    Yup PRS as much closer in the middle. The D and G tuners on my SE are pretty much touching but on the copies you can get a finger between them. Similar on the core PRS guitars.

  • @Chinaguitarsceptic
    @Chinaguitarsceptic  11 лет назад

    Yes I agree. I was surprised that the action was so low. However it has settled a little bit as I have not had time with a production on this week to do any work on her and so she has sat for a couple of days settling. The 7th 12th and 15th frets are definitely the high ones AGAIN!! I hope to get chance to do a little work on her tomorrow and maybe post a video. However I have some Tesla Sharks from IronGear to try out first in Mitzi!

    These are pretty interesting videos, thank you very much. I've always wondered how the eastern low paid workers are able to create so good looking instruments so cheaply. And I'm not talking about these copies, but all kinds of tight budget instruments of all brands out there. But apparently there's reasons for the low price, setting up takes quite a few of hours to complete.

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  10 лет назад +1

      Yes they are not finished or QC'd properly. However speaking to some of the sellers it is one of a very limited number of jobs that the poor can find to keep food on the table. It does not excuse the fake trade and I still maintain that they could create a market with their own brand name if they tightened up on quality control. It's a shame both that they have to live that way under the Chinese rule and that I doubt many folks who work in US guitar factories have to work so hard to put food in their kids mouths. Secondly that their tat is flooding the second hand market with copies so close that some would be fooled. Buyer Beware! :o) That's why I started having my own logo put on and will do from now on.

      It was a pig to get set up. The Chinese guitars are rarely if ever worth the money unless you want a project. That is when it is great to have your own logo on the headstock - not only does it make it legal and you can sell it, but you deserve your name on it as you will have done MOST of the work to make it a useful guitar :o)

    Oh, forgot to mention; I like laminates if maple or other hard woods, you actually end up with a deeper tone much dependent on the body wood. Keeps the tone deep and sweet. With a full maple cap, sometimes the sound is to brite, like a real PRS

    I've listened to Mr. Reed talk about all the work, tonewoods, and electronics he puts in his guitars that justifies the outrageous prices dumbasses will pay for those guitars. I have bought three chinese guitars and love each one of them. My first was a copy of a Martin D45 except the copy has a cutaway. Also with there are no Martin markings on the guitar. My name appears where the Martin logo appears on the headstock. It is a great guitar. The second guitar was a tele copy. It does a good job too. My Third guitar was a PRS custom 24 copy that I haven't completely set up yet. I can't stop playing it long enough to work on it. Like all Chinese guitars seem to need, setup work was and is necessary. I also put new pickups in the tele that I had ordered and received before I received the guitar. The PRS took forever to get here due to custom inlay work I requested for the fingerboard.(which was done quite well. No birds or tree of life or anything like that just some old world runes that I thought looked kinda cool.) Like I said, I've been happy with all of them.

      Roy Colley Hey Roy. Sorry for the delay been so busy at work. My favourite overall is the Martin D45 as it plays best. However my favourite to keep is Purple Haze because it has my logo and is not a fake just a custom copy of PRS style - this is what I will be doing from now on. :o)
      Of the les pauls [which are all better than expected] the original Greenie Moore with the cracked neck is my favourite as it has the slimmer 60's neck which I like. Probably why it got cracked though! :o) Cheers buddy :o)

    There are SO MANY really high quality copies that can be had (copies looking like the real deal but having the real mnfctrs name; Edwards/Burny/Tokai, etc) vs counterfeits (like these in the video) at good prices, that these are just a shame. I don't own any Gibson LPs currently but have owned several. I've worked on guitars out of a shop for several years up until a few years ago and one of my favorite LPs EVER was a Burny that I purchased from a client. We did the service work for 2 Guitar Centers in the area and had 7-8 LPs in to get setup before they went up for sale & at the time we had a client's 58 and 61 (real vintage Gibson's). We got snowed in and had to stay at the shop for a couple days, we got a little... buzzed and extremely bored so we decided to do some A/B comparisons with a set of PAF's I recovered from a destroyed 61 ES335 and a few sets of Thro-backs on the new LPs vs the clients vintage ones. Long story short; the Traditionalis got closest to the vintage vs new Standards and a Custom. Testing the Burny was an afterthought, we were both shocked, literally mouths agape at how much better the Burny sounded. A year later the owner called me and asked if I knew anyone interested in buying the Burny, I said yes; ME. It was one of my favorite guitars ever. A little heavier than the Gibsons were (it was a solid body, no chambering or weight relief), I replaced the pickups and stoptail/bridge and the tuners; the tuners weren't bad but I wanted the keystone type. Everyone who heard or played it wanted to buy it.
    Know ahead of time, the lawsuit copies many times aren't exactly like the originals. Edwards makes a great copy, but their 335 copy for instance uses solid Maple tops and backs vs Gibson's laminate. You'd normally think you'd want solid vs laminate, but the Gibson being the guitar that's being copied had a different tone both acoustically as well as plugged in. I believe they also have a longer neck scale.
    The Tokai from the late 70's early 80's, which are like the benchmark of lawsuit Gibson's; (there's a well known story of Billy Gibbon's using a really nice '59 Standard in a record that was actually a Tokai and the producer or engineer was blown away) have a narrower neck @the nut. But my point is that if you're willing to buy a counterfeit knowing it's a not real, you really should check out one of these. They can become a bit overpriced on eBay now, but if you search the web you can find them pretty cheap.

    • @timwhite5562
      @timwhite5562 8 лет назад

      Follow up; the pickups I pulled from the 335 were actually had a bridge PAF, the neck was a PPA. By this point Gibson's patent went through, but they still used old stock before they started putting in the newer pickups. You'll find early on that later guitars still have the older components. The same with Fender. There are some 65's out there with pre-CBS necks, bodies, etc

    I'd be careful... When i was in the jewelry industry, i noticed the Chinese would use any old metal they could find to cast parts. Example: after nmh batteries were no longer in use, they were used to cast the jewelry... Along with a higher lead content... Anyways, wash your hands after handling... Especially before eating.

    To me it doesnot matter with action or buzzing fret things cause it's not too difficult to set up.. cause setting up will not cost you thousands of $ compared to the original ones

    I'm having some difficulty understanding why one would want one of these knock off guitars when there are plenty of good guitars from reputable sellers available at reasonable prices. For instance I purchased a Fender manufacturer Squier Strat for $299 at Sweetwater. They set it up and it sounds great. I mean for only $299 why bother taking a chance with unregulated Chinese factories? However,, I have to admit to loving these videos. I guess all of us are hoping you'll come across something extraordinary. And to those who insist the Chinese guitars are illegal they are not. Please understand they are not illegal as they do not have the PBS name on the headstock nor do they meet the specs of the real deal. Drop the rock already. If one were to alter the fake and try to pass it off for the real deal that would be illegal.

    Yeah it is a subjective taste thing with all guitars [they're like art], but thank you glad you liked it. :o)

    Listen. I get the PRS purist complaints here, but I live on a fixed income due to disability and can't EVER afford to save for a $600 low end PRS (all at one time) let alone something REALLY nice. If I can purchase the looks, and bit by bit over time apply a proper set up, add better pick ups, better tuners, etc until it's a properly reliable and playable guitar? That's EXACTLY what I'm going to do...

    I want a Prs but lefty guitars in Prs are super expensive. And I'm a sound man for a living so I think I can make the copy sound like the genuine article. Korean version custom 22 and 24 don't come in left henaded

    plug it in that all I care about,,,the sound

  • @Chinaguitarsceptic
    @Chinaguitarsceptic  11 лет назад

    Look is all subjective anyway but you couldn't be more right that it's the electronics, pups and wood that make the sound. If you record who cares what it looks like. If you play live the fidelity of most PA's is not great so look tends to be more important than sound. Unless you are only using an amp then the amp and all the above count too.

    Apologies if this is a question you get a lot, I'm new here and young foolish and all that... but... What do you do with all these guitars? All of a sudden your videos just started popping up in my suggestions, and I already see a whole bunch of Chinese Les Pauls and PRSs that you've posted. Holy moly. Obviously you aren't selling them, that would be ridiculous. Do you just have a giant storage shed full of Chinese knockoffs or something? Haha

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  9 лет назад +1

      flips220 Nope I am eating them buddy! They taste great with marmite spread :-) LOL no seriously I have 13 including 4 of my own brand and one that I'm just editing the unboxing. After this I am giving them away on my channel, but only the ones with the Milton logo's on them. Just no more space! :-)

      Chinaguitarsceptic Ah, awesome. That's pretty cool of you to do. Thanks for the answer. One more question though... Does putting marmite on your guitars make for some tastier licks? j/k

    If someone wants to buy a fake PRS from China or any other brand, ask the vendor to remove the PRS logo of the guitar. At least it will keep them a little bit honest
