I had little over 20mm hole in my heart. I was with my mom at the clinic since I've been breathing heavily after little exercise, which wasn't normal. At the checkup they listened my heart and asked another medical professional to listen. Three people listened my heart, freaking my mom out at the same time. They accidentally found out I have a hole in my heart. After planning and tests, we were ready to try the umbrella device, which would close the hole. But on my last checkups before the operation, the hole got bigger. They ended up performing open heart surgery on me. My parents freaked out. I was around 4 years, close to 5. My parents were 25 and 26. It's been almost 18 years since I got it fixed. Only have about 10cm scar in the middle of my chest and another little scar under it
Hi Natalie, good to hear that you got treated and are doing well. Can you please tell me more about your recovery experience and if there were any post surgery issues you faced?
@Suchithra_suji I'm not a doctor, but I can provide some general information. A secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) is a type of congenital heart defect where there's a hole in the wall between the heart's upper chambers. The choice between open surgery and a keyhole (minimally invasive) approach depends on various factors, including the size and location of the ASD, as well as your daughter's overall health. Minimally invasive procedures often have shorter recovery times, but your cardiologist is the best person to advise on the most suitable option for your daughter’s specific case. Please consult with a pediatric cardiologist to determine the best course of action.

A hole in the heart, also known as a congenital heart defect, can vary in its severity and impact on your health. The consequences of not receiving treatment depend on the specific type, location, and size of the hole. In some cases, small holes might not cause significant issues and can go undetected throughout a person's life. However, larger or more complex holes can lead to various heart and lung problems over time, such as heart failure, irregular heart rhythms, or pulmonary hypertension. It's essential to consult with a cardiologist or healthcare professional who can provide a thorough evaluation, recommend appropriate treatment options, and discuss the potential risks associated with not addressing the condition. Treatment may involve medication, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery to repair the hole and prevent further complications. The course of action should be determined based on the specific diagnosis and your individual health needs.
When I was a newborn my ASD was small and closed by its own. I am almost 15 years old right now and it hasn't reopened since then. Can it reopen? And if yes will it reopen if I lift weights and in the future move to heavier ones? Please answer. Thank you for reading.
Nah you are good but you should be checking up with a cardiologist at least once a year. But you are fine. I'm 25 just got mine close with open heart surgery. Don't think it will open again
