There were those who liked to claim Taylor's appeal was only in his entertainment value,with the dancing and movement, but those people were dead wrong. It's his voice, it's always been his voice. For country week, I'd have given my right arm in retrospect to hear him sing Charley Rich's "Behind Closed Doors."
I may be in the minority but I like Taylor's version of Country Roads. I remember him saying that he was doing it in honor of his grandfather and other miners because of a recent mine collapse. He was trying to show respect for them and their families. They never mentioned that on the show. Usually he would put more enthusiasm in the song but he wanted to show respect. I thought his vocals were great even though his usual charisma may have been less.

You know, I'm a bigger Taylor Hicks defender than most. While I do think that he's probably on the not-as-strong end of winners when compared with others, but I personally really like his character has a performer and I think he has a good voice. I still take him over Lee DeWyze and Nick Fradiani any day, and I also prefer him to Phillip Phillips. But I have to admit I couldn't see myself putting him much higher than that when compared with all the others. And although he had quite a few really great performances, this was one of the couple where I'm gonna have to side with the Taylor Hicks haters. This was pretty bad. Granted, most people were this week, but this was honestly his weakest imo. Personally, I think he's lucky that fan-favorite Mandisa did even worse than him that week.
