IIRC, "Hang Castle" is Tomoya Ohtani's only musical contribution to Sonic Heroes. As for "Mystic Mansion", that was composed by Naofumi Hataya & Jun Senoue.
I'm so glad you checked out these themes together! I don't want to spoil anything for you with VGM vibes so I'll keep this brief, but I did mix those tracks myself and I will say that the song doesn't always transition at the same point as it does in my vid, but I did my best to emulate that at a point in the song which made sense. As for the version at the end where they're mixed together, it is not like that in the game itself but there was a physical version of this game's soundtrack that did something similar but I couldn't find it online very easily, so I decided to replicate it myself to the best of my ability :) Mystic Mansion is an absolute banger also, it's definitely one of my favorite Sonic tracks but I think I have like 100 of those 😂 Sonic Heroes has an energetic OST overall but it does go for a few different moods that I enjoy quite a lot. I'm excited for you to hear more of its soundtrack in the future, as well as more Sonic in general of course!

@@misterbin00 and unfortunately neither is the one in Mystic Mansion, unless you progress through the level in the right speed. Else you might get one part over and over and over and over til your ears are tired-
You cannot fathom the amount of excitement I felt when this popped up in my reccomended tab. I LOVE these two songs, a couple of my favorite Sonic songs that I enjoy listening to every October
Mentioning Tomoya Ohtani... I just went to a Sonic Symphony show in Boston last month, and he actually ended up being there, playing bass guitar. He wasn't even on the guest list, so it was a very pleasant surprise. I ended up being able to give him a high-five! Dude's one of many musical prodigies that has worked on this series.
one of the coolest parts of mystic mansion is that the song is divided into sections and the song progresses with you troughout the level but in a very seamless way, which is quite novel for a 2003 3d platformer
Hang Castle and Mystic Mansion are interesting because of how they do dynamic music. this gimmick is unique to these two levels only I think.... Hang castle is easy to see, the stage flips, the music changes, sadly it doesn't cross fade or anything, the music just restarts when it flips, there is a sound effect to helps with the sudden restart tho Mystic Mansion is substantially more interesting, the song is composed of multiple tiny short segments, it is not as easy to see when the transition happens since it is all so smooth, the game actively waits for the right moment to make the switch from a segment to another and if you are two fast it can skip around to the next segment as well since they all transition into each other at the loop point, there is a indication of where it tries to transition, it is always right at the end of a loop so they have a "riser"/"symbol" (or whatever musicians call it) right at the end of the loop, 13:31 is when you can hear a transition between two segments that exist for different purposes, could say where they plan but really a jump of intensity like that is self explanatory a lot of the time
Mystic Mansion is a recent obsession, I've heard it for years, but I never really sat down and listened to it, as I didn't really grow up with Sonic Heroes. But it's so good, clean like you said, but it just keeps throwing stuff at you and it just feels so cool.
I have been a Sonic fan all my life and I've gotta say, no matter how obscure the themes get for vgm live, you're probably gonna need to save a spot for our blue blur
Hang Castle is basically the game's anti-gravity level without actually being anti-gravity. The OST version of the song has a more unique way of merging the two songs. The cool thing about Mystic Mansion's music is that it's segmented and coded to play each segement depending on which area you're currently in. Hang Castle and Mystic Mansion are my two favourite Zones in Heroes.
Sonic heroes is ho0nestly my favourite sonic soundtrack, and that's saying something given how good sonic music is in general. There isn't a single song in the game that's a miss.
One interesting thing about Mystic Mansion is that each section of the song will loop and dynamically cycle based on what area of the mansion you are in.
Mystic Mansion has specific parts in the mission that repeats certain parts of its soundtrack, the soundtrack itself is short, but other than looping the whole track, some parts are being looped to help with the flow and the mood of the level itself.
Both your guesses for how the flipping mechanic in Hang Castle works were right: the switches are orbs you touch. The music change isn't seamless and technically there's loading but it's hidden by a ghostly visual effect that obscures the entire screen so you don't really see the loading. I don't mind it though. Mystic Mansion is definitely my preferred of the two, even if that level drove me insane as a kid. Sonic Heroes isn't formally split into Acts but effectively it is. There's different level themes (ghostly castle, ocean, city, jungle etc.) and each theme has two levels which basically function like Act 1, Act 2. The first level is usually much easier than the second (and Sonic Heroes has four different teams you play as which serve as difficulty modes). So Hang Castle is basically "Act 1" which introduces a lot of the level manipulation mechanics (which mainly consist of just level flipping) and Mystic Mansion is basically "Act 2" takes those mechanics further (where things in the level change position or change shape).
Wow You guessing that the state flips is really cool! The stage does literally flip when you hit certain switches and it plays the alternate theme when you’re running through upside down terrain (you aren’t upside down but the state doesn’t.) It has a very fun Halloween town styled stage. And I can only imagine the flip idea comes from the vibe of existing in the living world and the underworld parallel to each other.
@@JessesAuditorium Yeah I think I missed that. I started noticing you were talking about wanting to not have context and there being no notes for Mystic Mansion. I wasn’t expecting you to respond so fast before I could edit. lol Keep it up, by the way! You’re such a chill dude!!
Sonic CD made the thing of stages having different songs (4 in total, time travel and good or bad future end for Act 3), then Sonic 3 & Knuckles made it so each Act of a Zone is different themes (while still having some resemblance), after that each Zone has a different name (Stages) and will have all levels a different song unless sharing the same level (like Adventure with Tails playing Sonic's stages) (Unleashed being an exception because of the Day & Night levels) but in Heroes is the closest you can take them as "Acts" even if they are not referred as such, because you get 2 levels that shares a common theme before a boss and changing locations. Edit: Everytime I listen to Heroes' OST, I cannot unhear at the background *_"ANNIHILATION!!!"_* and blast the screen with missiles and gattling gun shots Edit 2: I'm pretty sure Jun Senoue is the composer of 90% of the game... obviously the other part being Crush 40.
Sonic HEROOOOOESSSSS My very first Sonic game, I'll always have a love for this one. You play as 4 different teams, each with a "speed", "fly", and "power" member (example, as you guessed, is Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) It didn't call things "Acts" in this game, but each location theme is two level sets, followed by a boss, repeated 7 times
I love the Heroes soundtrack. Especially Mystic Mansion, though the game has several tracks I love more (but the soundtrack is stellar). Also gonna recommend Alundra's "Nightmare" for the spooky vibes video. Can't think of a song that would be more deserving for it than this one. It's a contender for most unsettling song in all of gaming.
Sonic had halloween stuff for 3 games in a row and I kinda low key miss it. Adventure 2 had Pumpkin Hill, Heroes had These 2 stages in this video, and shadow had Cryptic castle. All 3 featuring pumpkins in some way.
If I could give an analogy for your ears, When I hear Mystic Mansion I think of the Streets of Rage 3 intro & Futurama brewed together to concoct this witch potion of a beat
there is an enemy made just for these stages who's whole purpose is to jumpscare you and then laugh at you for getting scared. So yeah definately at the lighter side of spooky
4:45 The noise in the first upload is definitely the upload, I assume they ripped the songs from the console version. There's an official OST upload with the full quality (minus RUclips compression). That is what happened in the 3rd _third_ of that upload! =P Hang Castle is by Tomoya Ohtani, Mystic Mansion is by Jun Senoue and Naofumi Hataya! =)

Mystic mansion is just ASKING for a dope haloween dance routine. Some real Thriller stuff. It is prety fun and not scary. Which is funny because there are ghosts in Sonic games too.
With Mystic Mansion, the transition is so freakin' cool: You have to figure out a way through the Mystic Mansion, and it will loop you through the same room again and again until you find the right way to the next room. The music reflects this, and so each segment of the song will loop until you move to the next room, where the loop is lifted and it will transition SEAMLESSLY to the next part of the song and start looping again.
