The PROBLEM with Wonder Woman VILLAINS

- Wonder Woman is regarded as one of the most important and iconic superheroes of all time, which includes a catalog of characters from both Marvel and DC Comics. She is without a doubt the most recognizable female superhero, yet most average fans have very limited knowledge of her mythos-especially her supervillains. While many can easily name a variety of adversaries for Justice League members like Superman, Batman, The Flash, and even Green Lantern, Wonder Woman’s rogues' gallery remains relatively obscure. Cheetah, Circe, Ares, Silver Swan, and Doctor Psycho are among the few who have been adapted to serve as antagonists in various media. The DCEU/Zack Snyder era of DC had Wonder Woman face off against Ares, while James Gunn’s first canonical project in the new DCU, Creature Commandos, features Circe as a threat to the Creature Commandos. DC Animation has also had a tendency to nerf or depower some of Diana’s most formidable villains.

@@damired I am not talking about versus
How does Harley Quinn have a animated show with 5 seasons before Wonder Woman?
Because her show is a spin-off of Batman
Because DC didn't originally own Wonder Woman. They leased her from the Marston Estate. That's not a good excuse, I admit, but that's the main reason. She should have had one back in the 1990s, with Mattel footing most of the bill no less, but no, the Estate would profit too much! So Mattel just repainted the unsold toys for the canceled cartoon and made TWO more cartoons out of them. A Wonder Woman series, even a bad one, would have almost certainly been more successful. As stated, it's not a good excuse, but sometimes corporate executives can be petty.
HQ is nothing without Batman's cast!
Could be they don't know what to do with an overpowered demi-goddess who can defeat Ares?
Make her a woman with skills and magical items that enhance her abilities and then we'll see whether villains can defeat her.
Popualrity, she's a Batman character so of course she's more popular than Wonder Woman who as important as she is, never gets solo adaptations or long running ones.

Ares used to be my favorite villain in DC because of Wonder Woman's run after Crisis on Infinite Earths with George Pérez, I believe. After the New 52, his depiction changed a lot, and he became less cool. But in Rebirth, he became so pathetic that I can't even take him seriously anymore. In the first arc, he's already more of a loser than a god of war, and later, he gets his ass kicked by Wonder Woman because he doesn't know how to use a rope. And maybe it's an exaggeration, but he basically loses the fight because he did not know what to do when Aphrodite broke up with him. Truly pathetic. I read some more arcs where he didn’t show up and eventually dropped the comic. Can you guys tell me if he’s still like this in the current runs?
@@vamosimbora5324 He's not currently, not if Tom King writing the series lol expect way more pathetic Supervillains. Cheetah being known as the universal jobber villain does not help, especially when you tell everyone she's supposed to

I've been told that Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman have two types of "arch-villains". One that they have a very deep personal relationship to and one that's just very iconic. Cheetah, The Joker and Lex Luthor fall under the latter category.
Circe should’ve been her arch nemesis 🤦

She really deserved an animated series. Batman and Superman got original villains like Harley Quinn, Livewire, Mercy and Volcana. On a sidenote, Absolute Wonder Woman has being peak so far. Each issue keeps being better than the last
Absolute Wonder Woman has been so good. I love how, right away, you can see how her nature as a warrior and a symbol of compassion aren't in opposition, but in union. You can really see how well Kelly Thompson understands Diana's character!
First we get My Adventures Superman, and last year, we got Batman: Caped Crusader. So, here's hoping we will finally get a Wonder Woman animated series, something that takes inspiration from the DCAU years.
@mcurran6505 take very little from the DCAU years. They really didn't understand her and have admitted to it...or at least when Dwayne MacDuffie wasn't around they didn't.
If you need DCAU inspiration for the new series with Diana...take only three things. The John Byrne run (the run they use when they actually bothered to care as they were clearly using this to tease Hippolyta in the JSA maintaining Pre-Infinite Crisis canon since JLU ended right as Infinite Crisis began) as the main Wonder Woman side, the 2000's Greg Rucka run for the dayjob as Diana Prince and of course get Susan Eisenberg to be around somewhere with the combining lines being Perez 80's run/2009 WW movie as the origin and Phil Jiminez 00's run to tie it all up in a nice little bow to set up the Simone Run's wild adventures.
Fun fact: Volcana was brought back in the Harley Quinn show and added to the comics
Director Boyd Kirkland, one who directed and written Batman tas, pitched a Wonder Woman tas in 1994 but unfortunately was rejected.

At this point it's intentional
I call cap on it being "paradoxical" to have Wonder Woman be written as a bad ass warrior yet wise and kind. I mean seriously, it's just a matter of having her stand her ground at times of conflict, yet still being able to be coolheaded enough to use reason when that's an option, and be sweet when the situation allows it. It basically describes most paragon heroes really, nothing innately paradoxical there.
Hell if you go off Myths, That is a Greak hero, Hercules was kind and strong, he broke people out of hell literally against the will of the Gods, He fread Prometheus and Altlas from there Punishments, he build pillers that hold the world up for Altlas nobody asked him to do that he did it because it was right. Cheetah and Circe are two of my favourite villains because of both how simple they are, but are made in a way to pose a threat to their respective protagonist (Wonder Woman). Circe is like the magical equivalent to Wonder Woman's strength, while Cheetah is like the animalistic, monstrous opposite to WW's more measured and compassionate manner.
The fact that they have undergone so much disrespect is a little aggravating. They look good, with glimpses of greatness, but are then loaded with heaps of disrespect. Cheetah in Catwoman: Hunted felt like quite a terrifying threat to begin with, Catwoman having no real way of contending with her... until she does. Circe looks so good in Creature Commandos, but getting beaten like that kinda implies they could quite easily beat Wonder Woman in a similar manner.
People think with gunn in the helm that he will make more project about wonder woman which is funny. CC came out and almost all the people i know knee at this moment he wouldn't do it.
I think a big reason why more people don't know of Wonder Woman's villains is that the Lynda Carter show refused to use any of them. If you look at the Adam West Batman show, that made so many people fall in love with his large rogues gallery. By the time the Tim Burton Batman movie was made, people were already well aware of who all these characters were. And those movies just added on to it. For the Lynda Carter show, people remember Wonder Woman but they don't remember any of the villains because they were just nameless gangsters. It was a huge missed opportunity.
The show did use Fausta Grables and Paula von Gunther...neither of whom DC brought over to the Silver Age comic books, and didn't bring back even when the show used them...Okay, Silver Age used Paula von Gunta, who was a German rather than Golden Age Paula von Gunther, who was an Austrian, but Gunta showed up so little they might as well not have.

I absolutely love your Wonder Woman videos, you really show your actual comic knowledge compared to those who just parrot what adaptations portray. I especially love how you directly rebut the idea that Wonder Woman is hard to write for.
While I'm not as big a Wonder Woman fan as others, I'm glad you're showing people why she deserves the same level of respect as Batman and Superman. I hope one day she gets her own animated series.
Weirdly, I've noticed that a lot of her villains are doctors or scientists? Doctor Psycho, Doctor Poison, the weird egg guy etc
That's because in the Golden Age comics, Wonder Woman was a trained nurse. Her first civilian disguise, as Diana Prince, came because she happened to look just like an army nurse named Diana Prince, so Wonder Woman bought her credentials, as original Diana Prince needed the money to go to Brazil and Wonder Woman wanted to stick close to Steve Trevor as much as possible.
Wonder Woman was also a premier scientist and mechanical engineer in the golden age comic books, so was a "doctor" in that sense as well, though I don't know if she actually earned a doctorate. Point is, she'd use her medical skills to help her allies, to help the victims of various foes, and match her scientific knowledge against there's, though she tended to hit mental road blocks when it came to nuclear physics and quantum mechanics. Good thing Paula von Gunther defected! The Silver Age Wonder Woman was much less of a nurse and a scientist, but the a lot of the "Doctor" villains carried over anyway, cause a lot of the Silver Age Wonder Woman stories were basically just redrawn Golden Age ones, even if it didn't make sense in the newer continuity, because the newer DC continuity didn't care about making sense. Even Post Crisis, there are still some here and there. You can almost always expect a Doctor Poison, as she was really the first super villain Wonder Woman faced.
Yep, same with Spider-Man and Superman. It's the consequences of the Golden and Silver Age.
@@insupportofjunhado and she had magical villains as well, like Ares...I mean she's always got to deal with that guy since she is the Agent of Peace...and she's sick of it.
As for the Silver Age stories? Well they tried reinventing several times but they were trying to introduce either a more magical or martial arts based version before the bronze age blended it to magical-standard like she's meant to be, somewhere between Clark and Bruce. The Bronze Age also tried to introduce Orana as a possibility replacement as well...and it would actually make more sense if they had done what they did with the rest of the JSA and Aquaman of the All-Stars for Wonder Woman.
I mean it would make way more sense for Wonder Woman continuity-wise especially if Diana Prince is told that because she chose to marry Steve Trevor and give birth to Lyta who will eventually be Wonder Woman that it disqualified her from being Wonder Woman past the retirement of the JSA. Orana steps in, trains Donna they take the silver age and bronze age stuff that doesn't apply to the Martial arts era and Orana "dies" in the Crisis, Diana steps back in as WW because Lyta isn't ready after the crisis (because Hippolyta realizes that marriage doesn't automatically disqualify anyone from being a hero since the "this is a game mentality" got retired with the crisis) and then retires again when Lyta's old enough to choose...Lyta chooses in 1999 to marry Hector and leave to go be mommy to Daniel causing the title to be passed to Artemis Grace who trains Cassie after Artemis Grace falsely wins against Donna for the title of Wonder Woman...when Artemis admits to cheating, Donna claims her rightful place as Wonder Woman and brings forth actual change in the system by not just having Cassie as her sidekick, but her own son Robbie. Robbie then becomes Wonder Lad, later Darkstar as an independent young hero with the abilities of Wonder Woman and eventually Wonder Warrior...and he is the boy who said... "Oh hey boys can like Wonder Woman without being weird."
Ok, now name all the doctors and scientists Batman superman and Spider-Man face. It’s such a non observation 😂

I just realized peter drinklage would be the perfect casting for Doctor Psycho
By his own logic, he has to pass on the role though as Psycho could be taken as a toxic (or "fantastical") portrayal of dwarves dehumanizing them.

But you wrote "Drinklage" 😂🤣
I think the whole “She can’t use her powers if her hands are bound” is a sort of nod to when Wonder Woman was first introduced. Whereas if you tied her up with her own rope she becomes useless. But I could just be talking.
I see it as way for gunn to bury the situation quickly because let's be honest it is bad excuse almost as he had to think of it on the fly
Wonder Woman has such an underrated rogues gallery of villains, full of potential to be expanded and developed if more DC media chose to expose and flesh out her villains and Diana's relationship with her villains in a more interesting way to show how compelling they can be. I swear villains like Circe, Cheetah, Doctor Poison, Giganta, Silver Swan, Veronica Cale, Doctor Cyber, Doctor Psycho, Blue Snowman, Egg-Fu, Greek Gods... even Angle Man all have potential, and they really dont need to nerf a lot of them as they can be as much of a threatening villain to Wonder Woman pose genuine threats worth of an Amazon princess instead of getting killed or defeated so easily that it makes them feel less threatening such as Circe or CHeetah as you mentioned.
I really hope Wonder Woman in the DCU will be handled better than she was in the DCEU as they actually showcase how multi-faceted of a character she can truly is rather than just being seen as a bloodthirsty warrior when she is so much more than that and is a compassionate, caring princess, ambassador, hero of peace and love that believes in mankind and willing to fight for it
I'm more for power ups. Some of these villains need a power up. Angleman has potential but his reliance on his triangle is just.... Dr Poison has potential too and also Cyber. But I really want to see First Born return. He has a cool backstory like a God of War type character.
I like the inside out man, he looks cool. Instead of a teleporter gone wrong for a Wonder Woman show I would say he insulted a God (Apollo, Hera any would do) and they turned him inside out, and being turned into a monster in myths makes you stronger. He is mad at all the Olympians and that includes Diana.
@@EgbutaJustin I can see your point as I wouldn't be against the idea giving some of her villains power ups like Silver Swan, Earthworm or Dr Poison. However I do feel like Wonder Woman should have some villains that are not super powered to have a balanced ratio of villains who are diverse in being either physically or intellectually threatening like Veronica Cale, Angle Man, the Sovereign, Maxwell Lord who for the most part are non superpowered villains
Egg Fu and Blue Snowman are the ones that can definitively stay at home.
Blue Snowman is just "yet another ice tech-based villain". There's only so much of those you can have in your universe before you're asking yourself "What's the point of them all?". Mr. Freeze works because he's a cryogenics scientist. Captain Cold works because he works specifically on the offensive application of cryogenics. Killer Frost doesn't use "ice science", she has actual powers. Icicle and Blue Snowman are already in the "They only work as random fodder for the Secret Society of Supervillain" field... and considering WW has a problem of her villains only being used as fodders, I'd honestly use the former rather than the latter.
Egg Fu is really just a joke character based on a pun and kind of a racist caricature. And, unlike similar characters who started that way (like The Mandarin) he never evolved into something greater on his own. There's the New 52 version, but that's a completely different character with ties to Apokolips.
Also, both of them have very stupid names. What kind of stupid idiot chooses to become a mercenary and uses as a name "Blue Snowman".
@@drakegrandx5914 You do make some fair points, and in retrospect, I can see good reasons why Egg Fu is probably a character better left back in the past, or at the very least, I would hope good writers find good ways to reimagine the character and his motivations and probably rename him for the better so that he's not defined as a racist caricature of a different era of history. I was thinking of reimagining Egg Fu as the MODOK of DC Universe with a different name and motivation that isn't problematic, but at least keep the egg gimmick like Dr Eggman from Sonic or Egg-Head in Marvel Comics.
Regarding Blue Snowman, I do very much see your point, as DC already has a lot of ice-themed villains like Mr Freeze, Captain Cold, Killer Frost and even Icicle Jr all work in unique ways with different motivations and backstories to make them more distinct as independent characters. But, I do agree Blue Snowman just feels like an ice villain that doesn't have a lot to differentiate themselves from other ice villains, nor do they have a lot to them that makes a good villain to Wonder Woman specifically. Plus, I do agree that the name Blue Snowman is a bit of a silly name that's not very intimidating. However, I do have a unique idea to reimagine Blue Snowman by taking inspiration from the Five Nights At Freddy's franchise by making Blue Snowman an animatronic robot snowman who was once beloved by kids as part of a theme park mascot. Still, the animatronic robot would be haunted by the spirit of a dead little girl who would've been murdered, similar to Elizabeth Afton (aka William Afton's daughter), who got trapped and haunt's the Circus Baby animatronic robot in the FNAF lore. Its not the best idea, but I think it would be an interesting moral dilemma for Diana to fight a robot haunted by a child's ghost and give Diana a chance to showcase her compassion at the idea of such a horrific fate for a little girl. That would be my idea to reinvent Blue Snowman in a way that keeps the ice villain theme and the idea of a robotic snowman doesn't sound so outlandish for a Wonder Woman villain
Hot Take: she has the coolest villains who just need a good Sinister Six type story. 🤷
I’d love to see a Villainy Inc adaptation
Real
I honestly dont think WW's villains suck i just dont think their presented well nor are their threat level's consistent as writers tend to try reinvent Diana and her mythos and at times ignore past set ups and as result her villains consitency never grow. It doesnt help some of her villain's are at times treated like jobbers
I forgot that Cheetah is Wonder Woman's arch nemesis. I keep thinking it's Ares cause he is infinitely more badass and an opposition to Diana's ideals. Cheetah is usually portrayed as a goon, fodder or barely a character in animation and film. Yeah I don't read any cheetah vs Wonder Woman comics besides that one where they fight on the island. Where Cheetah kick's Diana's ass and won the fight. So if there are any cheetah fans out there why do you see Cheetah as Diana's arch nemesis instead dog Ares? honest question.
@jknetwork6211 The reason Cheetah is often considered her rival on the same way Clark has Lex,Bruce has Joker,Hal has Sinestro and Barry has Thawne is because she's existed almost as long as Diana and they've been tied together ever since and in most iterations they were close friends where Cheetah(Barbara Mirnerva)admired her however she was manipulated by a god and became a Cheetah and Barbara developed a deep hatred towards Diana for not saving her and failing her and in most iterations shes into the Amazonians history and Diana's weaponry like the lasso of truth and unlike others doesnt care about redeeming herself or letting Diana help her. Plus she's consistently the most Wonder Woman villain to get pushed in most adaptations because she simple and easier to execute compared to the rest of her Rogues and the reason they dont go with Ares as her rival is due to the fact Ares is a Greek Methology adjacent character with the whole one note God of War aura and many fans never considered him the most interesting even tho he has his moments
They are not terrible, they are just very inconsistent in various forms of medias, and even Diana herself is also inconsistent.
@@Antiprincipl3I agree their genuinely not bad at all and have so much potential to be more but the lack of consistency and care in maintaining any set ups hurts them and Diana herself like you said has the same issue
@@Kalel2.0 yeah, exactly. Like for example; circe in creature commando, I like creature commando but Circe was almost not even a threat at all, so I don't know how she's even going to last 2 minutes against Diana.
Wonder woman mythos have truly never been fleshed out outside of comics, her story, her villains or her adventures, but truly the thing thats always bothered me is her supporting cast, cause is truly nonexistent to the general public.
You ask some ramdo about Batman's cast and they know robin and batgirl, you ask about superman, supergirl and superboy, hell even krypto is mentioned, but when you ask about Wonder Woman..... Crickets. Wondergirls have always been either removed (donna) or reduced to secondary characters (Cassie) in the adaptations of their respective teams, if they didnt change directors in DC I don't think Yara would have ever seen the light of day, homegirl has been ABANDONED after they didn't know what to do with her and now that lizzie unfortunately arrived to the picture, girl will have to FIGHT to make and appearance. And thats another thing, Amazonians are all about sisterhood but in the (awful) WW ongoing you get lizzie being taken care of by the supersons? Seriously? Not by Donna, Nubia or Cassie? I get the whole legacy trinity thing, is cute and all but I'm starting to wonder if Diana disowned all the wonder girls after Lizzie was born or smth.
Wonder Woman had a daughter as a recurring character before Superman and Batman did. Giving her a new one to tie to their sons was silly. We're kind of still waiting for her first daughter to be reintroduced, and it's your fault for putting her in Futures End on Free Comic Book Day, DC! Wonder Woman didn't just have an island of other Amazons, she didn't just work inside army intelligence, have a private volunteer charity group/music band/army/detective group in the Holliday Girls, but she also had underwater cities full of allies, a blacksmith business, a boutique, a charitable foundation not related to Holliday College, an embassy. She shouldn't just have one of the most expansive supporting casts of DC, but the Wonder Girls should have their own expansive supporting casts just by being associated with her. Volume six just abruptly condensing it all and saying look at Lizzie play with Jon and Damien was weird. Seigfried was too busy to baby sit?
crazy title bro
Not the first time either.
It’s how he gets clicks.
At times, Wonder Woman's connection to Greek Mythology has been a double-edged sword. Because yes, it opens up a great deal of storytelling possibiities, but it's also a major contributor to the aforementioned chronic housekeeping the title is subject to. That is, she tends to be at the whims of the culture's wider relationship with Greek myth. When she was first created, I don't think William Moulton Marston particularly cared about fidelity and didn't put much thought into the implications the head of the classical pantheon because the most toxic.
Starting, I want to say around the time George Perez rebooted the character he tried to be more "accurate" and of course Greg Rucka was also very interested in the subject matter, and it just became unfashionable to go back to more "retro" takes. Xena also had a huge influence, to the point some think Xena was a Wonder Woman expy, when the two were originally very, very different characters. The explosion of sword and sandals movies like Gladiator and 300 also further, sort of cemented her into that archetype. Interestingly, it didn't completely happen with Thor , I think because Norse mythology just never had as much a presence as Classical mythology, and Kirby was just too inflentual and beloved to dispense with his vibes.
What are you going on about? Everyone knows Dionysus was the god most likely to get alcohol poisoning!
Norse is in now and I say becoming more popular than Greek myth.
I wonder who would be next .
@ Becoming? Norse mythology has kind of been the basis for fantasy writing since people started writing it down. For better or worse, it simply isn't as well documented as Greco-Roman mythology, because the Norsemen weren't as big on the whole writing thing. There's a lot more Norse inspired dragons than Greek ones. A lot more stories about elves, dwarves, giants, trolls than nymphs, fauns, satyrs, agathodaimons. Maybe when it comes to gods, and specific heroes like Heracles, individual, named monsters like Medusa, because again, more of that stuff is actually written down, but that's about it. More named individuals get used from Hellenism. Norse themes, imagery and conventions are a lot more popular otherwise. More yggdrasil than celestial sphere. More kraken than cetus. More Valhalla than Elisia. More Hell than Hades.
@insupportofjunhado u mean inspire.
Norse mythology have less movies and show than Greek in the last centuries.
Now I notice more representation of Norse mythology itself.
Norse is more popular now then Greek in my view.
Most of the comicbook creators of this period enjoyed a classical education where the greek gods were introduced. That's why there are so much greek gods-inspired heroes from that period. However, owing to Moulton's weird psyche, WW's take is a rather uncomfortable one, displacing the amazons from Ares' tutelage and putting Heracles (who is traditionally heroic and liked) on the vilains' side. The end result is a confused character made out of fragments from other, established ones, instead of being her own thing. The Marvel approach would have been to 'comicize' Nike (for exemple) instead.
Here's a comparison idea of how these top Wonder Woman villains are similar compared to well-known Batman & Superman villains:
1. Cheetah/Joker/Lex Luthor
2. Circe/Penguin/Brainiac
3. First Born/Bane/Doomsday
4. Ares/Ra's Al Ghul/General Zod
5. Giganta/Killer Croc/Parasite
6. Dr. Psycho/Hugo Strange/Ultra Humanite
7. Eris/Posion Ivy/Livewire
8. Phobos/Scarecrow/Prankster
9. Deimos/Clayface/Bizzaro

You can't fool me; M, I am familiar with your game.
My favourite Wonder woman villains are Circe, Veronica Cale, Silver Swan and Gigantia. I wish they get more love and attention in media. I have an idea of a Wonder Woman animated series with these villans being the main antagonists and Wonder woman teaming up with Donna Troy, Cassie Sandsmark and Yara Flor to defeat these villans.
New 52 Wonder Woman wasn't that bloodthirsty in her own comic book. Those writing all the other New 52 books didn't get the message. She wasn't as restrained as her Pre Flashpoint self, as she wasn't sent out as an ambassador, but she was seeking answers to mysteries, not fights. Now if she was a battle maniac in all the New 52 comics fine, if she had a cooler head in all the New 52 books fine, but New 52 Wonder Woman suffered from wildly inconsistent writing.
I liked creature commandos but I wish they didn’t use Circe they should have switched her with like you said Felix or enchantress they could have taken out her heart or something
Such a lame way to introduce Circe, i'm side-eying Mr. Gunn for that but still hopeful...
They made Circe and Amazon. Way to make the world smaller than it needs to be right out of the gate. Two mystical islands? Nonsense? What's an archipelago? Is that something you can eat?
Creature commando sucked
For real. Maybe they didn’t use Enchantress because we already saw her in the 2016 Suicide Squad, but come on. Circe got taken out by a rodent and a glowing skeleton. That immediately diminishes her as a threat
@ that didn’t happen anymore it’s a reboot the only thing they keeped was peacemaker and suicide squad 2021 and maybe blue beetle and there changes some of those event to fit the new universe
I was literally just thinking the same thing today about how CC completely screwed up Circe and how powerful she is. Now if she shows up in a new WW project I’m going to need them to boost her so she actually poses a threat.
Exactly
Great video! My favorite WW villain has to be Circe and it’s a shame that no adaptation has properly depicted their relationship despite her being so powerful and mythological. She’s a great mirror to Diana’s mission of peace where she represents discord and spite- a pure hater. I love that the upcoming Monolith WW game will feature Circe as the primary antagonist invading Themyscira so hopefully it boosts WW’s credibility on-screen.
Right? I finished the ye Phil Jimenez WW run recently and there was a scene where Circe was just screaming at Diana saying how she hates her, her family, her friends, her race of Amazonians, and her gods. Just this unrelenting Hatred and screwing up of Diana’s life. That’s some Joker, Lex Luthor, Reverse Flash, Black Manta shit right there. That’s why I’m my opinion, Circe is Wonder Woman’s greatest Nemesis.
I am a day late but I am here. First off I just wanna say tanks for the lovely League content. I knew OF wonder woman basically since I was a kid. I know she's badass, I know she a Sweetheart and I have always seen her as part of the trinity. The Scales that balance Superman's Hopefullness with Batman's Introspection with her own Benevolent Human dichotomy. Loving but Strong and Caring but Stern. Your videos has flagged me to recognize DC really has given wonder woman the short end of the stick and I've been doing personal writing projects (and research) to try and craft more things to share about her.
It used to be that Wonder Woman handled her enemies “the proper way” by reforming them. She even brought them to a place called Reformation Island.
It seems that Wonder Woman adaptations aren’t very kind to her enemies. Ares did okay, but lost the Greek mythology milieu he’s made for. Cheetah was botched. I don’t think anyone remembers that Doctor Poison was in the first movie. Maxwell Lord . . . I liked his depiction better than it has been in comics lately. But I’m old-fashioned enough to think he shouldn’t be a villain and should still be managing the Justice League. Even if it’s the “big guns” version.
But you hear this about a lot of heroes. People dumped on Superman’s RG constantly. And people wrote off Flash’s Rogues to the extent they were decommissioned before Geoff Johns brought them back.
This is why I make my own Wonder Woman animated series and video game for myself
It’s still mind blowing to me we not only got a Animated show for Harley before Wonder Woman, but said show is like on its 4th or 5th season smh
It’s hard being a Wonder Woman fan fr
I know right, like after all these years, we still didn’t get a Wonder Woman show. After so many Batman shows & two Superman shows, they still didn’t get the Diana her show. It really is hard being a fan when they don’t even want to present her a lot. ☝️
Damian Animated Universe did alot of villains dirty. Not just Cheetah.
Her rogues are actually dope and has a good group pf criminals, gods, and magic beings.
Crazy title can't say it's wrong tho
I'm convinced the only reason that people remember Ares is a Wonder Woman villain is because they know him from Greek Mythology.
A movie with Giganta as the lead villain would be hella interesting. DC should have been all over that before Marvel brought Ant-Man to the screen.
Indeed it would be. I’m surprised Giganta hasnt appeared on the big screen yet. Closest to Giganta appearing on the big screen is Ginormica from Monsters vs Aliens.
Cheetah is the only wonder villain besides Areas and Circe. I know of. But Cheetha was the only one I had knowledge until media made me aware of her other villains
I wish Monolith Studios put all of her villains in the game as Boss Battle
I want the Wonder Woman Game #1.
Wonder Woman is one of the most important characters of all time. But the problem is that she...has what Batman and Superman lacked. She needs a good tv shows. Give her a cartoon, PLEASE.
Diana deserves more respect than what DC/WB have given her.
Facts, we still have not gotten an animated show but we got plenty of Batman & two Superman shows. We got a teen titans show before a Wonder Woman show, that’s crazy. I wonder over these years was it ever a discussion in Hollywood to make an animated wonder woman show ?
But saying you can’t be a warrior while also being compassionate and headstrong is kind of wild especially if you're a writer, writing a character is very complex just like real humans can be more than one personality trait.
5:35 Someone told me they stole Wonder Woman's victory over Maxwell Lord to put it in that Superman movie to have him snap Jod's neck.
Ngl Peter Dinklage would make a perfect Dr psycho
He's got experience with comic book roles before I think he can pull off a DC character.
@ absolutely
Cyborg: Atleast she have her own villains
Her villains are very underrated, potential to be among some of the best rogues galleries in comics no cap.
JL/JLU writers dropped the ball with presenting WW to young DC fans, that includes her villains. Those mfs just did NOT understand her and they admit it. I mean DC drops the ball with WW all the time so yeah.
ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN RARE W!
To be fair, JL/JLU was not a Wonder Woman series, but a Justice League series. There's a reason Wonder Woman doesn't immediately join the Justice Society in All-Star Comics #8, despite All-Star Comics being a Justice Society book, and then immediately moves onto Sensation Comics, which is mostly about her, before finally getting her own solo series once she was a proven seller. She didn't have to share the protagonist role with seven other characters. The antagonists didn't have to worry about Superman. There's some stuff that shouldn't have stood, like Supergirl curb stomping Doctor Cyber, or Gorilla Grodd being responsible for Giganta, but again, it wasn't the Wonder Woman show, it was the Justice League show. She, her supporting cast, her villains, none were going to get all the attention they really needed with six other leaguers to showcase.
@@insupportofjunhado well yes, but even with no Flash, GL, Hawkwoman or J'onn series you know which runs are used for who when they meet. When JL did care about WW, it was the then- contemporary Byrne run with a side of Rucka. When it wasn't it was Post-War Kanigher.
@@insupportofjunhado I find Giganta from Justice League/Justice League Unlimited to be underrated.
Wonder Woman is so interesting because she has no iconic story, no iconic run, writers, artists people can just immediately go to and talk about. She's almost like a weird step sibling to Batman and Superman. Everyone knows of her, but they don't actually *know* her.
Another issue is her simply being a female character and studios being completely against a female lead super hero movie for decades. That direct to DVD movie in I think 2009 while pretty good also didn't sell well enough. Hell in the 90s the only female lead super hero thing I can really think of that was popular was Powerpuff Girls unless you want to include some anime like Sailor Moon.
I want a wonder woman resurgence not for Diana, but so Donna can hopefully finally get some respect, or atleast a story that makes sense 😂
Let’s be real here, *ALLLLL* DC characters BUT Batman mythos are sadly underrepresented and lack the development needed. DC seriously don’t give a damn about out any of their heroes if it’s not Batman.
Batman is overrated for my liking.
I remember seeing a Womder Woman comic where she comforts a boy with cancer, I need that kind of love and compassion to be animated and/or shown off!
Seriously they could have used Felix Faust or even it could have been her using her clairvoyance and the dead giveaway would have been her trying to have clay face be the princess after murdering her and also being the puppet Master of the invasion. Which would have made circe more of a Master manipulator and threat versus her just getting wailed on by weasel and having a weak ending with the evil hot princess being evil
The ideas you made are a lot better than what we have. I mean, I love James gunn and his work, but this is really disappointing, not bad, but very underwhelming.
I'm pretty sure DCU Circe is demigod since in comics her father is Helios like mythology.
Yup but they nerf her in Creature commandos so hard.
Bro changed it from mommy to woman thinking we wouldn't notice
one of a reason i like wonder woman is she's willing to use deadly force when necessary.
but hey im just a casual wonder woman comic reader💁🏽♂️
Title made me shed a tear … a man of culture 🥹
Bro knew what he was doing with the first clip and old title
She’s the best character ever. My favourite character and its a shame NO ONE has come close to justifying and depicting her. The pre new 52 era was the best wonder woman era. Only comics can do her justice.
They could easily retcon Circe being weaker than usual by explaining that the Amazonians/Themyscirans sealed her full power. Easy. Done.
I dunno of this is accurate but my impression is that Wonder Woman kinda struggles cause she doesn't necessarily fit the cookie cutter superhero mould like Batman and Superman do. She has elements, sure, but a lot of her lore seems more mythological and political rather than fighting baddies robbing banks. I'd theorise that's what maybe makes her a hard sell and why some of her more interesting appearances have been team up stories.
My hot take is that Poison Ivy would make for a really interesting WW villain, more so than she does a Batman one anyway. Maybe even give her a Clayface as a cute nod to her being made of clay, but I'd also want to avoid just grafting elements from Batman on to her so idk.
Poison Ivy started as a Batman villain, but Rob Kanigher initially didn't know what to do with her, and tested her out as Doom Patrol villain and a Wonder Woman villain as well. Poison Ivy didn't have any plant powers or political opinions back then though. Ivy's only power was climbing up walls like a bug...or like ivy...and her only goal was just to pull off heists. Eventually Poison Ivy moved back to Batman, got seduction powers, then poison powers, then plant powers. In last year's Valentine's Day special, "Say Yes To The Mess", she tried to go after Wonder Woman again, but it didn't go well for Ivy.
@insupportofjunhado I didn't know that! Wall climbing powers is odd... but kinda makes sense in a dumb villain way
I’m not crazy on Greek Mythology.
Giganta and Cheetah are both awesome
Giganta is my favorite.
I really liked the take they did on her in justice league unlimited where some of her powers came from her artifacts and being the anointed champion of Hera but the rest of her powers came from being Aries's daughter. It was a fun take that instantly granted her a more complex relationship with one of her big bads.
Also Doctor Domino has a fanstasitc character design (Wonder Woman has like 4 Doctor villains funnily enough)
based doctor domino enjoyer
JUSTICE FOR THE PRINCESS!!!
Man this Wonder Woman video game needs show her off right now
Exactly plus, when is that game going to release ?
@ We really don’t know all we know is it’s being made
To make her villains more cooler:
- Circe needs to be more powerful as a supernatural magic threat in the dc universe on par or stronger then Shazam and Zatanna
- Cheetah idk but i will say her origin story is confusing and messy(boring too)
- Giganta idk
- Doctor Cyber can like the be like the Riddler for Wonder Woman and have cool huge story arcs surrounding the guy.
- Silver Swan should be Wonder Woman newest rival since shes closer to Cheetah and she is like how Deathstroke is as strong as batman and they have mutual respect.
- Ares can be like Hush but he gives no clues, he is a global threat. he hurts wonder woman closest friends and becomes her friend just to backstab her.
I feel the haphazard over-use of Cheetah is part of the problem. She's the only WW villain that some writers can think of, but there's not that many stories that can be told with her as a major focus. She comes across as WW's answer to Kill Croc being used as the Joker.
I agree, and I'd take it a step further. There's four Cheetah, and one gets overused in comparison to the others on top of Cheetah also being overused compared to other antagonists.
I love wonder woman. I'm reading Absolute WW, it's my second comic of her and im already obsessed, tho my dad was a fan of her Tv show from back in the day so we watched it on DVD and stuff. She always had a special place in my heart and this video really encapsulares what I think. I'd love a WW animated series, or anything featuring her as a protagonist.
No love for giganta 😢
Giganta is quite an underrated character.
@@bighand1530 absolutely agreed 👍
@@Sonicman4155 My favorite version of the character is from Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.
I had a stroke trying to decipher the thumbnail, it looked like WW had to left hands
Wonder Woman in the thumbnail is thick.
I hope that Wonder Woman game is really good. It feels like we could be close to Wonder Woman finally truly breaking into mainstream appeal. A good game and animated series coming out at around the same time could do wonders for her! She should be just as obnoxiously overused as Batman and Superman.
4:33 the crazy thing is historically she *does* run through her rogue’s gallery, just not through murder. Most of the time she either legitimately reforms her enemies (by taking them to Themyscira, where the justice system actually works) or she just outlives them (the original Cheetah died of old age).
My Top 10 Wonder Rogues
1) Circe
2) Barbara Ann Minerva/ Cheetah
3) Ares
4) Doctor Psycho
5) Doctor Poison
6) Veronica Cale
7) Vanessa Kapatelis/ Silver Swan
8) Adrianna Anderson/ Doctor Cyber
9) Giganta
10) Angle Man
Honorary Mention: Blue Snowman, Hades, and First Born
Note: NO MAXWELL LORD, NUFF SAID!!!!!
Giganta is my favorite from your list.
@@cje499 circe, Veronica Cale,Silver Swan and Giganta are my favourites from that list. If wonder woman gets her own animated series I want these villans to be the main antagonists.
Alright man, dang. I’ll watch Creature Commandos! These days every time I click on one of my man’s videos, he be talking about “spoiler alert” and I gotta waiting 5 minutes before I can put the ear buds back in my ears.
Circe got washed doesn’t mean she can’t get stronger!
Nah no villain gets hoe'd like Ceetah does jesus christ 💀
Fighting Nightwing and Catwoman 😭
You forgot to mention Giganta and her ability against Wonder Woman.
I think my favorite thing about Giganta, after the crisis event, is Diana? Win some, lose some. Cassie? Nice kid, too bad it's my job to smash it. Donna? Its existence is an insult to me!
Giganta is an underrated character.
My Girl Diana and her rogues need more love fr
Cheetah is one of my favorite DC characters, and I HATE how they're forced to tone her down or nerf her. The WW84 design sucked too, and I'm PRAYING Cheetah is done justice in the DCU. Make her actually scary again, James Gunn!
Also, WW84 kinda ruined Wonder Woman’s character for me.
Couldn’t agree more that Diana is just missing that one good iconic animated series to really show what her and her villains are made of. Obviously I grew up with the iconic BTAS, STAS and the 90s Spider-man, and they are my go to mental check for what an adaptation does to this day, they’re my litmus test, they define how I perceive some of these heroes and villains. And Justice
League WW is fine but ultimately lacking.
I wouldn’t have known Cheetah is magical unless I watched this video or looked it up on Wikipedia. And of course everyone knows Ares that it’s almost boring to consider him because of course the god of war is a bad guy, big whoop. Dr. Psycho has plenty of potential, but the first time I ever heard of him was the DC Universe MMO that came out in, like, 2011 or something.
Sometimes it feels like people don’t know what to do with her because they have the same misconception of “boring-ness”, that they do about Superman but can’t see that because they think being a woman is different enough. But like Supes, she and her villains can be interesting, they just need to be given a chance in the right hands. I want to be able to have easy go-to rogues for Diana the same I can for Spider-man or Batman.
Could you imagine the DCU adapting War of the Gods? It’d be wild
Can you make a video talking about the new absolute universe? It’s so good!
Giganta is my fav villain of Wonder Woman
Same here. My favorite version of Giganta is from Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.
I think this Absolute Wonder Woman run will absolutely revive her iconic status as a pillar of the genre. It has perfect captured her characterization thus far and has set up a personal conflict with the Pantheon.
Never really cared for the character outside of the 2009 animated film.
Fair enough. Though she was on the higher side for me in Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. I think I might be a bigger fan of Gal Gadot than her Wonder Woman.
I really want a show where it also shows the underrated Wonder Woman villains.
Like Silver girl with the wings, doctor poison, etc.
8:13 Also I remember playing the game and being shocked at the stabbing.
Vanessa Kapatelis, the cyborg Silver Swan.
I consider Giganta underrated.
Hope they develop circe in future
Problem is they never quite got down what Diane's main struggle is. I'd argue Circe is the best WW villain. Girly prefers to manipulate men and sometimes women into doing what she wants instead of handling it herself. Just the opposite aura altogether.
Nah that title is crazy 😭
I don't know much about Wonder Woman but I like how her more modern interpretations shows her with a sword and shield. She's compassionate but isn't afraid to cut someone's head off if need be. Plus it just help her be more unique compared to other 'flying brick' characters.
I think the biggest problem is that Cheetah, Wonder Woman's most famous enemy, doesn't seem as interesting or powerful as Joker or Lex Luthor. I mean, think about it:
1. Joker believes that all humans are deep down as evil and insane as he is, they just need to be pushed to the edge. He considers Batman his literal opposite, a tragedy to his comedy, and he wants to break him so that he can prove that even such a noble hero like Batman can be corrupted.
2. Lex Luthor is Ubermensch. He genuinely wants the best for humanity but only if he is the one who rules over humanity. He hates Superman for two reasons-because he thinks humans will end up being too dependent on Superman's help and they won't be able to evolve and because he is jealous. Superman could easily proclaim himself a god emperor of mankind thanks to his powers, but he refuses because he is too kind and humble. Luthor's ego doesn't allow him to acknowledge that somebody who is stronger than him can be altruistic, so he wants to turn the public opinion against Superman and defeat him so that he can become humanity's de facto ruler.
3. Meanwhile, why is Cheetah evil? Because plant god turned her into a cat monster? Because she suffers from mental illness? Because she was always evil and the curse merely made her more evil? Even the writers don't know whether Cheetah is supposed to be sympathetic or loathsome. Why does she hate Diana? Sometimes, it's because she blames her for her transformation, sometimes because she is jealous that Diana is so popular and beloved and sometimes it's simply because she is an obstacle.
Also, let's face it. A naked cady lady is not as intimidating as a mobster clown or a businessman dressed in powerful armor.
This naked cat lady destroyed Superman on 3 separate occasions, destroyed Flash 2 times and solo'd the JL in new 52. she's FAR more terrifying than an overrated psycho clown and a bald guy in armor who always get their butts kicked. at least with Cheetah she besten WW several times
Came because of Wonder Mommy in the video title. Stayed for the friends we made along the way
Wonder Woman needs an animated series. She also needs a clear theme in it with a foil to here character (Circe or Ares). Heck, I did research a while ago, I saw that she had a deeper rogues gallery they can totally dive into (characters not seen in decade).
BTW, lackluster conclusion for Creature Commandos s1.
10:30 Amen to that! That way, we could attribute her defeat to “playing dumb” so that she could get to Waller.
