The Exiled BCM(A) and Armed Struggle tells the story of the establishment, training and operations of the Azanian National Liberation Army (AZANLA), an armed wing of the Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPO) that operated largely inside the country under the political leadership of the exiled Black Consciousness Movement of Azania - BCM(A).
The BCM(A) which founded AZANLA was headquartered at Harare, Zimbabwe. It is the BCM(A) that guided all the diplomatic efforts that enabled AZANLA forces to obtain training and support from Libya, Eritrea and other countries that were instrumental in the supply of the required military hardware. It was the same BCM(A) that enabled AZANLA to be housed and to operate from Botswana and Zimbabwe.
The BCM(A) was dissolved into AZAPO at a congress that was held at Shaft 17 in Johannesburg in October 1994 . It was at this congress that the BCM(A) formerly handed over all its assets including the AZANLA forces to the political authority of AZAPO, thus making AZANLA to be officially an armed wing of AZAPO.
The story of AZANLA is here told by General George Biya who was the second General Commander of the AZANLA forces. He took over the leadership of AZANLA upon his return from military training which he obtained in Libya. He immediately setup camps along the South Africa/Botswana border thus enabling AZANLA to enter the country with ease as and when they needed to conduct operations.
Commander Mbulelo Ketye who obtained his commando training in Libya was deployed back in the country upon his return to establish and run the internal network that enabled the facilitation, recruitment, screening and training of young people who swelled the ranks of AZANLA. He was responsible for anchoring the support stuctures of AZANLA as it operated inside the country.
General Pitso Hlasa who was together with Commander Mbulelo Ketye at Libya commando training assumed the leadership of the AZANLA forces upon the arrest of General Biya and became the General Commander. He setup camps on the South African side of the Botswana/South Africa border, and a number of bases inside the country. He was responsible and guided most of the training and operations that took place inside the country.
