This idea makes a lot of sense, though he didn't explain it quite as easily as I've seen others do... Essentially, an ever expanding universe, as it cools off and dies, starts to look the same mathematically, as an infinitely small, and compressed universe. They both converge on the singularity, where things eventually break down, and infinitely large/small/hot/cold, lose all meaning, and become 1. They are the sane thing, and start a new expansion, or are the end of a previous one. Twister theory is the name of this idea if I remember right.

Penrose mentioned something about photons that I have always thought about. I am not learned enough to take it further, but if I look at a tree outside, I see the tree because of photons hitting my eye. From my perspective, the photon was created and aimlessly bounced around and deflected in the massive sun for as much as 40,000 years before leaving the Sun, hitting the tree then hitting my eye. It hit my eye 40,000 years later. From the photons point of view it hit my eye instantaneously as it was created. We talk about the future, but the photon is already there according to its self.
it bakes my noodle, that one.

    This interview is fantastic!
I've recently been thinking about this idea of conceptualising infinite time and infinite space as a bounded shape for the exact same reason! It feels like the future is such an unbelievable eternity away but that's all depending on your reference frame and perception of time, so an infinity of distance is irrelevant from the right perspective.
While it is still grim for us being stuck waiting around for everything and trapped in the boundary, this idea suggests a way to think about time and space externally to time and space, and it is beyond exciting to hear these same thoughts from this wonderful man.
What a time to be alive!
