You just have to look past the garbage exterior of the modern music to really find the good stuff. Our modern pop music is trash. Same thing happened to country. But look into the modern rock and folk music scene. There is some really phenominal and groundbreaking music being recorded these days.
@@tirsahingalls2776 will do, am familiar with some of them. But I've got to say, I've been into music since just prior to the Beatles came to America, but by the late 1980's I just about gave up on anything new that was coming out or on the radio. Around that time I realized that between 1963 and 1989 there was more than enough great music for me to digest and assimilate. The exception of course is the Blues, there are some blues guitarists and blues bands out there that are truly top notch, equal to the new breed like Joe Bonamassa. But thanks for the list.
@@bobgarr6246 a lot of that is survivorship bias. The 60s and 70s produced a lot of trash too, people just forgot those tracks after a couple years and never played 'em again, while the real gems have stuck with people, and their fans will drag the albums out of an old cabinet to share them with their friends. The same is true of music from the Baroque and Classical periods, and for Jazz and Swing, and for movie soundtracks--a lot gets written, but only the really good (or memetically awful) sticks in the popular conciousness for longer than their initial 15 minutes of fame. The same will be true of the last few decades too, it'll just take time.
Apparently,Music from 70's & early 80's are truly the best..Notice how many TV Commercials use for example Queen,Rolling Stones, Aerosmith,SuperTramp sound track..Not to mention the use of that era in many, many well known Movie's.. Obviously someone likes that music to have it in there Movies & Commercials... Best music ever!!!
...she was one of the first artists to ever be on the country, pop, AND R&B charts at the SAME TIME. Check out the documentary that just came out about her called "The Sound of My Voice." Literally, she's 73 years-old and has Parkinson's disease, so she is no longer able to sing, and given her prodigious talent, that is such a tragedy. She was the first woman to pack arenas (back in the 70's). She sang on broadway (Pirates of Penzance), she recorded standards with Nelson Riddle (Rosemary Clooney & Frank Sinatra, etc. songs), she sang with Aaron Neville, and was a trio with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris...AND she sang mariachi music. Linda Ronstadt is also Mexican American....a LOT of people don't know that. Forget Selena, Linda was THE ORIGINAL Mexican American superstar icon. More people need to know about this national treasure.
Linda was iconic. At the top of her game she changed genres against all advice. She did theatrical, also Hispanic music to honor her heritage. And also did the old standards to honor the music her parents loved. She dated then 70s governor Jerry Brown. She was a woman who followed her own path. She was amazing and iconic. Love her story, it's inspiring
It's is an absolute JOY to see you discover the music and the phenomenal artists from the late 60s/70s and through the early 80s. YOU will be the one to make today's artists rethink what is real creativity and true talent and you'll keep these "old" artists alive for generations to come. I thank you for that (and of course, the memories). Stay safe and keep discovering. ✌
Linda Ronstadt is a national treasure. Dolly Parton is too. They got together with Emmylou Harris and did an album. I think it was called Trio. They had some absolutely breathtaking harmonies. You should check it out, even if you don’t react to it, just for your love of beautiful music.
The perfect song from start to finish, vocals, backing harmonies, lead vocal power, and instrumentation. She took a great classic song and turned it into an even greater classic song! And that's something, considering how iconic the Everly Brothers' version was.
Yeah, they do a great job in telling the story in the movie The History of the Eagles. Don and Glenn had become part of her backing band but wanted to start they're own band. Instead of getting mad at them, she helped them and told them they needed to get Bernie Leadon in their band. Don said she was so gracious about the whole thing when she could've been upset with them. But that's how classy she is.
This is a very early performance in her career, when she was considered more of a country/rock singer. That voice is unmistakable no matter what the material was. Thank you for these great reactions. Her variety of work is endless. 😀
I'm an old 56 but Linda Ronstadt's music has just shaped my own taste in music. Since the pandemic, I have been doing karaoke live shows for my friends on Facebook and I always squeeze in one of Linda Ronstadt songs every weekend. She's the bomb!
Bro in that era from the late ‘60’s to the early ‘80’s we all listened to a diversity of so much great music, from Rock, jazz fusion country-rock,soul blues
It all comes down to the fact that there are two kinds of music. Good music, and what everyone else listens to. Everybody has a different idea of what music is good. If it doesn't hook you, it's nothing.
Linda was the "Queen of the Covers." This was originally done by Dee Dee Warwick ('63- did not chart), Betty Everett (#51 Hot 100 '63), and UK's Swinging Blue Jeans in '64 (#3 UK, #97 US)
Recently PBS broadcast her story. Took me way back standing in front of a a juke box playing her first hit ‘Different Drum’ and I turned to my friend and said this girl is too good and she’ll be out of this band and into something great for a long time. Rock, Mex, Opera, with the Eagles and other bands-an angel or a devil that voice could do anything. She’s quite ill now and can’t sing. Her gift has been stolen from her but how lucky we are to have all the best of her. Jamel, I appreciate you’re putting yourself out there and listening to music you never imagined you would hear, let alone appreciate and better yet, send it back to us with your smooth moves, big smile and sharing your own love for the music of my young days. Much love, brother.
@yes man That's the part that gets me in her version. That "No" near the end just kills me. The Ooh right before the No just adds to the emotion of it. And you guys saying the anemic original by Little Anthony is superior to this are just wrong.
I bought a DVD set of the best of “Midnight Special” and it is full of great performances from beginning to end. The 70’s rocked...then, the 80’s happened, lol
Jamel, since I found your channel last week, I feel like I'm seeing these performers through new eyes and am hearing tunes that I've heard hundreds of times through new ears. You've reawakened my appreciation for so much of the music that grew up with. And the way youtube has some very old live performances available for us is wonderful. I remember watching a youtube video of Nat King Cole in black and white from before I was born that just blew me away. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Ms Linda was always so beautiful and graceful.. her unique way of singing and how she controlled her voice her persona is one of a kind! Always so beautiful…delivered as female with grace, respect and entertaining. One of a kind!! Legendary!!
Never trying to outdo anyone else in her band.. always a shining in her own beautiful self… she is the true definition of musical harmonies talent!! I love you linda
Ritchie Hayward on drums from Little Feat. That reminds me - Willin' - Linda Ronstadt's version of the Little Feat song - is EPIC Jamel - you have to do some Little Feat. Especially from the Waiting for Columbus Live record as well as the studio albums. The groove is Sooooo deep. Fat Man in the Bathtub. Time Loves a Hero. Spanish Moon, Dixie Chicken, Oh Atlanta, Rock and Roll Doctor.
Linda Ronstadt was my “go to” for songs after a breakup. She gave the perfect voice to my feelings - whether I was angry or even better, when I was feeling really really Blue. ☮️💟
That woman's voice is pure power! She is a Latina, and recorded the best selling Spanish language album called Canciones de Mi Padre (songs of my father) Great old Mexican songs!
Great to see the entire band including tbe backup singers fully breathing life into a special performance. They all know they have a gold standard up front.
"She looks pretty tall" She's actually only about 5' 2" - gotta love those 1970's platform wedge high heels that everyone, even the men, wore back in the day. :-P
That is surprising. Every time I've ever seen a photo of her from her early days, with or without shoes, she always looked like she was kind of tallish. I would have guessed 5'6" to 5'9".
My brother used to wear them in the 70's and he was about avg height. Here's Linda next to Obama for height comparison. www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/7a7061d259ecf4cf203d84331e6df54f06a3030a/c=15-0-2265-3000/local/-/media/2018/06/07/Bergen/Morristown/636639696345038623-ASBBrd-07-15-2016-PressMon-1-B006-2016-07-14-IMG-LL-Birthday-Ronstadt-2-1-DEF0B7GE-L845431501-IMG-LL-Birthday-Ronstadt-2-1-DEF0B7GE.jpg
Nancy Berry Really? I saw in her bio that she's part German, part Hispanic raised in Tucson, AZ. She's slender but looks as tall as the guys she plays with...but then the camera changes a lot of things...
@@qthelost I think what adds to the illusion is the high waist & slender silhouette of the pant legs, which flares out at the bottom. She's wearing high heels but look how long the length is, almost touching the floor to where you can barely see her shoes. I'm just a tad over 5' 6" & back in my youth when I wore super high heels on occasion, it would push me past the 5' 10" mark. But for work I wore about 2 inch heels which put me at about 5' 8". When co-workers would run into me off hours, running errands or out for a meal, a few were surprised that i was shorter than what they're used to seeing during the week, because I was wearing flats or sneakers instead. :-P
I grew up listening to Linda and being one of her biggest fans. I saw her live over 50 times! Her voice was so pure and clear and a huge range to boot. Betty Everitt was original recording of this song but Linda made it a Multi Million platinum hit. She was only 5 feet tall but her voice was 10 feet high! She is sick now with parkinsons and can't sing anymore but thank god we have her voice on all her recordings
cutin' the rug was before even our time: "Cutting a rug" comes from the 1920s and the 1930s when couples would dance the jitterbug. When done continuously by many couples in one area it would make the carpet appear as though it was "cut" or "gashed".
That was Jose' Feliciano that introduced her. You should do a reaction to him. I recommend his cover of the Doors Light My Fire. He gave Light My Fire a second life back in the day. He’s an amazing guitarist and performer.
Almost every song she's ever done is a cover song. She's just so good at it she turned that into 3 number one albums (out of 30 studio albums) and over 100 million records sold. This live performance is a must see decades before they officially recorded as Trio, Dolly, Emmylou Harris and Linda. ruclips.net/video/8zkrS1dfOVE/видео.html
I used to never miss "The Midnight Special" on tv on Saturday night as a teenager. Yeah, I had absolutely no social life. Some things never change. Smh.

There was a recent special about Linda on CNN called "The Sound of My Voice." You REALLY should make a point to see it. You'll be amazed at her career. Simply a national treasure. SIRIUS XM 70's channel on my radio in my car I get to listen to this type of music. Sirius XM can also be streamed online too I believe. Linda Ronstadt was celebrated as A Kennedy Center Honorary Recipient in 2019 for her life in music. So many music awards that it would take me all day to type them all here. She now suffers from Parkinsons disease which limits her from singing much these days. Research her awards for music. One of the best female voices in musical history. I remember when I first heard her. Loved the duet she sang with Smokey Robinson. You have to see that. She had so much vocal control she could sing with anyone.
I'm with you. The music today can't compare to the music we had in those days. And there was so much really good music that we got spoiled. Now we all tune into the oldies stations because we can't stand today's music. Linda Ronstadt was a great artist, she had real chops. I'm a fan.
@@Tall-Cool-Drink The thing with disco is if have heard one song you have heard almost all of them. K.C. and the Sunshine Band. The Hollies, The Kinks, The Rascals, The Temptations, Chicago, The 5th Dimension, Mamas and the Papas, Jefferson Airplane, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, The Beach Boys, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Animals, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, The Beatles, The Stones, The Dave Clark Five, Blood Sweat and Tears, The McCoys, Janis Joplin, Booker T and the M.G's, ? and the Mysterians, Sam and Dave, Ike and Tina Turner, The Who, The Monkees, Carol King, The Byrds, Jan and Dean, The Everly Brothers, Lou Reed, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, The Blues Project, The Moody Blues, Cream, Sam the Sham and the Pharohs, The Box Tops, The Turtles, Tommy James and the Shondels, The Lovin' Spoonful, The Trogs, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, The Yardbirds, Hermans Hermits, The Righteous Brothers, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, The Left Banke, The Association, Buffalo Springfield, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, The Spencer Davis Group, The Cyrkle, Dusty Springfield and so many many others that can not be overlooked. The 60's and 70's were a period of some of the best music ever recorded and it's fantastic that so many people born after that time have discovered just how good and enjoyable it was !!! You should find and listen to a few songs from each of the above listed artists and see what you think for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
Still modern day jammers dude. Check out, Andrew Bird, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Of Monsters And Men, Grizzly Bear, Cherry Poppin Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Band, The Dead South, The Decemberists, Death Cab For Cutie, Nyles Lannon, The Pouges, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Fleet Foxes, and litteraly scores more bands and artists.
Loved the Midnight Special. Love Linda Ronstadt. I love that you love it. There's a lotta love here right now.
...she was one of the first artists to ever be on the country, pop, AND R&B charts at the SAME TIME.
Linda was the HIGHEST paid female rocker of the 70's. Astounding voice, I own "all" of her albums which I purchased as they came out!
As a Latina child, she was who I looked up to❤ She's one of kind. She makes me proud to be a Latina! A true talent
Canciones de Mi Padre
When I will be loved - her version of The Everly Brothers.
Louie Caporusso Jr yes!
The perfect song from start to finish, vocals, backing harmonies, lead vocal power, and instrumentation. She took a great classic song and turned it into an even greater classic song! And that's something, considering how iconic the Everly Brothers' version was.
Amen!
Wow -- thanks for putting this on my radar!
I love Linda Ronstadt.
LINDA RONSTADT sang whatever she wanted. Country, Rock, Folk, Mexican...this lady could sing anything.
She’s the reason we have the eagles. They were her band if I’m not mistaken or backup singers but she did get them they’re start.
Let's not hold that against her.
She actually introduced Glenn Frey to Don Henley.... and history was made....

@@dannytse8767 Great video! I've seen the movie but I haven't seen that interview.
This song made her famous! I have every album she made. She sang every kind of music!!! Loved her voice!❤❤❤
I like her version of ‘tumblin’ dice.
Linda is the best! Her live concerts were AWESOME!
I love this guy!! His reactions are priceless! ❤❤❤
I’ve watched this performance so many times and every time I fall in love with the lady in yellow. She’s on a whole different level
I grew up on both versions and love them both...Linda gift and the way she delivered the song was priceless.....her voice was just pure and flawless
Jose Feliciano introduced Linda in this video. He’s an amazing musician you should check out.
Love José!
Feliciano--blind, too.
god, i thought that was tony clifton but i knew that was wrong
I'm like Jose Feliciano...yall dug in the archives!
Awwww I loved Jose back in the day! Didn't realize it was him, thank you!
Linda was the first woman to hit the rock, country and R&B charts....with this song righthere.
Look for Linda doing "Hurts So Bad" originally by the Imperials.
Randall Spangler yes!
Little Anthony and the imperials are so good that you should check out the original version of hurts so bad. Respectfully Brant Heavner 😊😊
@yes man That's the part that gets me in her version. That "No" near the end just kills me. The Ooh right before the No just adds to the emotion of it. And you guys saying the anemic original by Little Anthony is superior to this are just wrong.
one of the best female vocalists ever! and gorgeous!
I bought a DVD set of the best of “Midnight Special” and it is full of great performances from beginning to end. The 70’s rocked...then, the 80’s happened, lol
Oh God, where did you bought it? Please tell us🙏🙏
I have nine DVDs of all the Midnight Special shows. It’s a fabulous collection.
I think Jamel would LOVE Little Feat!!
Makes me want to make that run from Tucson to Tucumcari and Tehachapi to Tonopah on a motorcycle.
Ah I just posted the Ritchie question befor I read this. Let's hear Feat reactions, certainly.
Here is another one of my favorite female singers, great voice
L❤️VED The Midnight Special ~ Oh My Soul Jamel “Did you see that sister in the yellow cutting the rug”!!GREAT REACTION!!! You’re a HOOT!
Great to see the entire band including tbe backup singers fully breathing life into a special performance. They all know they have a gold standard up front.
"She looks pretty tall" She's actually only about 5' 2" - gotta love those 1970's platform wedge high heels that everyone, even the men, wore back in the day. :-P
Seriously? She looks like she's 5'9.

Linda’s voice is fantastic. But I couldn’t take my eyes off the singer in gold. Fantastic!
Old school music is where it’s at 💯💯💯😎🤘🎧🎸🔥✌️
Staying up to watch the midnight special was a weekly highlight of my youth. And I had a crazy crush on Linda Ronstadt ✌🌍🎵
Just Linda's voice sends chills up my spine.
One of my favorite singers. Amazing voice, range and technique.
That was Jose' Feliciano that introduced her. You should do a reaction to him. I recommend his cover of the Doors Light My Fire. He gave Light My Fire a second life back in the day. He’s an amazing guitarist and performer.
Skunk Baxter on congas, Andrew Gold on lead guitar...what a band.
I am so loving you listen to this outstanding music! If we all got together and listened to good music, the world would be a better place!
You always look like you are having such a good time!
Almost every song she's ever done is a cover song. She's just so good at it she turned that into 3 number one albums (out of 30 studio albums) and over 100 million records sold.
This live performance is a must see decades before they officially recorded as Trio, Dolly, Emmylou Harris and Linda.

"Lose Again" is another incredibly powerful song she did that was written by Karla Bonoff, as was "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me." There was a recent special about Linda on CNN called "The Sound of My Voice." You REALLY should make a point to see it. You'll be amazed at her career. Simply a national treasure. Thanks for the great reaction . . . again!
I was just a young kid in the 70’s and I had it bad for Linda! She had it all, the looks the voice, amazing
You and me both. Son. You and me both
The power and rawness of her voice really shines through in her natural habitat -- on her mariachi cd. You have to hear that!

She did have such a beautiful voice. She did so great on Rock & Roll songs like, this one. Great reaction, Jamel. Thank you!
Watch Linda with Aaron Neville singing live on award show...I don't know much. Alot of chemistry!
I did 👍🏾
That's Candi Staton back there with the moves. She was quite an artist in her own right. Huge Linda Ronstadt fan, so thank you for this! Love your reactions!!
It is easy to connect to the music of this era because it is real., it is not washed through a computer and sanitized. It is real, artist actually had to be great on stage as well as great in the studio.
Loved the Midnight Special. Never missed it. So much talent displayed on that show. Really groundbreaking
The incredible and magical Andrew Gold on lead guitar! You’d know his tune “Thank You For Being A Friend”. He’s got some mega jams!! ✌🏻💙
Her cover of "Heat Wave" is really good
I absolutely love her voice, was such a great artist
"Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield. Xo to you Jamal
Yesssss!!!! I love this song!!!
I'm with you. The music today can't compare to the music we had in those days. And there was so much really good music that we got spoiled. Now we all tune into the oldies stations because we can't stand today's music. Linda Ronstadt was a great artist, she had real chops. I'm a fan.
You would have loved the 70s.
Music wise, I'm lucky I grew up in the 70s.

When they discovered disco Barry Gibb sounded like someone had clamped him in a delicate spot in so many of their songs. But I agree about todays music in general. It's not good.
No matter how great and wonderful these songs and artists are, and this performance was spectacular, Jamal, having you hear with me to listen and enjoy it all, makes a world of difference... Bless you and yours, you're my buddy......
Smokey Robinson version against Linda Ronstadt version of “Tracks of my Tears” please.
Listen to Aretha's version of Tracks of my Tears. Puts Smokey's and Linda's to shame.
Gary Dodgson If you haven't heard it, don't knock it.
Ooh Baby Baby! I love both Smokey's and Linda's version!!
Gary Dodgson There are so few men who can sing in has high an octave as Smokey. Male singers like him really need their own category.
