At first, I thought my brother's automatic 2014 camry just could not pass cars on the highway and was built to just cruise along for fuel economy until I tried it's manual mode to downshift and rev it higher. The jerk from downshifting is easy if you understand engine braking and how gear speed relates to throttle pedal. Best displayed in 1st - it is very sensitive and as soon as you take your foot off the gas - you slow a lot. That's because the throttle closes and the air supply gets down to minimal. Same happens when you downshift - the throttle position in 3rd grants a different speed than the same position in 2nd.
    So unless it's a hard braking where you need that extra deceleration from the engine braking, you can downshift w/o jerk by "catching" the downshift with additional throttle input and manage it from there avoiding unintended engine braking.

      Happy this video helped! Looks like the channel Modern Muscle has a good one, when you search "sports mode automatic transmission". Sport mode should just make the throttle more sensitive and in manual mode that should be it. Reason being, in automatic sport mode the car will let the car rev to a higher rpm before shifting into the next gear. However, in manual mode you can shift whenever you like. Your car manual may additional information.

    Very good video Idk if certain cars are different but my corolla SE 2020 actually will tone bc it doesnt down shift for you only if your that high of a gear so if your on five and just starting lime you did in the video it will notice and tone and if not it will take over but pretty much cancel the manual mode in essence until your fully stopped then you can continue to upshift again but yeah its pretty cool and its really manual in my car the feel and all its amazing sometimes I want hop in the car and drive just bc its so fun! If you get a sporty car this is the way to go especially if you like to accelerate hard and race around you can control the shifting so you can really crank it up hitting a yield ramp to get onto the highway its alot better then relying on the automatic to floor the pedal and pick up the speed which is usually fine but it just alot more fun and more engaging

    • @TheF90Crew
      @TheF90Crew  3 года назад

      Yup, most cars have a tone for downshifting if you are two high in rpms and even a tone if you are trying to upshift to low in the rpms! It does making driving that much more fun and to people who have never used it, its like unlocking a feature you never knew you had. Exactly, you can select the gear you want and be ready to accelerate so this really comes in handy when passing someone. Thanks for watching!

      11:35 I noticed you were downshifting while trying to stop and went to 2nd gear. When I tried to go to a stop I downshifted to 1st gear maybe around 10mph (without pressing the brakes) and the car slowed down on its on like I press the brakes, does that mean I downshifted too early and should’ve slowed down more in order to downshift to 1st?

    • @TheF90Crew
      @TheF90Crew  2 года назад +1

      @@250tsar Downshifting will cause the car to slow down, the term is called "engine braking". Since the engine is matching the rpms to the lower gear selected, you feel that slow down braking effect when downshifting. In some transmissions it is more pronounced, especially if you downshift to 1st gear since its such a short gear. 10 mph should be fine. I rarely downshift to 1st gear and let the car do it, depends how I'm feeling. Its just more rough. In a manual car, you would go into neural for a stop anyway and take off in first gear so its really rare to downshift to 1 st gear overall.

    Thanks for these awesome videos on manual mode. One question that wasn't covered - when going downhill I used to use D3 on my old car going like 30mph (steep hill) but I honestly never paid attention to rpm. So on manual mode what rpm and what gear would be best to use to avoid breaking so much?

    • @TheF90Crew
      @TheF90Crew  2 года назад +1

      To avoid using the brakes or brake pedal you can use a downshift to 'engine brake". So, if you downshift from 3rd to 2nd you will start braking. The thing is, with a downhill you will start speeding up and the RPMs will climb. I still think since the car chose 3rd gear in automatic mode (D3) your best bet is to stay in 3rd gear in manual mode as well. Are you trying to avoid using the brakes, why if so?

  • @thebeautyshop69
    @thebeautyshop69 2 года назад +1

    Amazing video thanx just on thing I can’t understand, when u say u want to pass someone u switch to lower gear for acceleration but when I do that it feels like the engine is working hard but the car is not moving as fast as in higher gear so how do u pass him which leads me to the question when u say downshift to pass do u mean u downshift for the power then when u get that higher rpm u up shift to get the car really going?

    • @TheF90Crew
      @TheF90Crew  2 года назад +1

      When you downshift, the engine is "working hard" because it is in higher rpms. You do this because the higher the rpms, the more power the car makes. Do you mean the car moves slower when you step on the gas at higher rpms (lower gear) vs lower rpms (higher gear)? If so, its not really the case, depending on your engine (naturally aspirated, forced induction, ecu mapping, etc.) the car can give the feels of more torque. When I mean downshift to pass, I mean downshift to a lower gear so from lets say 5th gear at 55 mph to 3rd gear at 55 mph, you step on the gas and as the car is accelerating and the rpms reach redline, you shift into the next gear. You need to shift up a gear to go faster. the reason you downshift, is the increase your rate of acceleration. Your car accelerates slower in 5th gear at 55 mph than at 3rd gear at 55 mph when you floor it.

  • @raefong9219
    @raefong9219 3 года назад +2

    Watched the whole video. It’s very helpful. Just one question, how should you engage the gear if you are going 40-50 in a downward sloping road? I tried to lowered the gear but the rpm jumps up to 4-6k. Not sure if that’s right.

    • @TheF90Crew
      @TheF90Crew  3 года назад +1

      Glad you found this helpful. So, on a downhill, you have to remember that gravity is helping you and the car will naturally want to keep accelerating. Do you mean engage the gear as in upshifting or downshifting, the second part sounds like downshifting so in that case when you are going to a lower gear, that's normal. If you downshift from lets say 3rd gear at 3500 rpm and go to 2nd gear, the rpms will be at 4-5k. When you downshift at high rpms, you will go into even higher rpms. So, wait till maybe 2500 rpms and then downshift, this way you end up in 3000 rpms instead. Hope that makes sense?

    • @TheF90Crew
      @TheF90Crew  3 года назад

      Appreciate it thank you! 1000 rpm is pretty low to be shifting and some car may idle close to that rpm. You can shift at and rpm you like in any gear. You can shift at 5000 rpm in 1st gear, 3000 rpm in 2nd gear, and then 4500 rpm in 3rd. All depends on the situation you are in when driving. You don't have to shift at the same rpm. The car in automatic mode does this when driving normally because that's what its set to by the manufacture.

    • @TheF90Crew
      @TheF90Crew  3 года назад +1

      Yes, you can just coast in that gear. You don't always have to be shifting every two seconds. You can stay in that gear as long as you like. 2nd gear is still pretty sensitive when driving around so the car may feel jerky when you get on the throttle, like as if it always wants to accelerate. That's why you upshift to a higher gear, like 3rd or 4th, so you can be more smooth with the throttle application. You can try this out, start off in 1st gear and look how sensitive the throttle is to your inputs, the car wants to go, because the gear is so short. They get longer as you move up the gear. You could argue around town maybe 4th gear for fuel economy but its usually the last 2 gears or so so 6th or 7th or 8th that you will see as fuel economy gears.

But the question that I have had in my mind after yesterday is that, my car is almost at its 10 yr mark. If I drive manual with my car and do these upshifting and downshifting to it (mostly within 2k-3k rpm safety range as you suggest), or in general, is driving manual in an auto gonna hurt the motor/transmission more than I just drive the car in drive mode?

    • @TheF90Crew

      You can do either or. It depends what situation you are in. Lets say you want to pass someone an you are in 4th gear and low rpms, you give the car a good amount of gas but because you are in a high gear and low rpms the car struggles to go quickly. In this situation I would still be on the gas pedal accelerating while downshifting so I minimize the time it takes for me to pass the car. If I am cruising around or I need to downshift and I have plenty of time and just want to enjoy the car or power of the car, I'll downshift with my foot of the gas, wait till I'm in the right gear and then floor the gas. Hi, if you put it on sport mode and you want it to gear up and down automatically, without clicking on the + and - can it happen?

      Most cars will automatically upshift for your and some will not. Two ways you can find out is either searching car forums for your car and see if this question has come up or, while driving the car rev it high while in gear and see if the car upshifts for you or bounces off the limiter. But yes it can happen. The Audi s4 on this channel would upshift automatically while the Mercedes GLC would not.
