The essence of sportsmanship is to acknowledge & appreciate the skill of your opponent. Ironically, it was North Melbourne who defeated Carlton by 1 point in the Preliminary Final - the one that *really* gutted you.

His 5th goal was straight through the middle from 80m! .... A legend of Aussie rules football from SA. North overcame a big deficit to win and again broke Carlton's heart in the preliminary final later that season.
He was nowhere near 80 metres out. For starters, 50 metre lines were not in our game during that era. When they were introduced, anyone who regularly watched the football at Princes Park would know that Malcolm Blight would have been no more than 60 metres out from goal when he kicked that ball. The ball would have been kicked near enough to 80 metres because it travelled about another 20 metres back behind the goals after it had passed through them.
@@spiralout2057 Well I mean that's the point right, it's legendary because it used to not happen as often, therefore for the time it was more spectacular, and popularized the idea of going for hangers. After that every kid wanted to do it, and more & more people came through with the ability to go for those types of grabs. One of the most famous AFL kicks, naturally, though the late Fred Fanning holds the record for kick length at 105.5 metres, and he was 17 when he did it. ;-)
That means you've never seen Richmond's/Carlton's Billy Barrot kick a football. As West Aussie, I've seen Subiaco's Brian Sarre and Perth's Graham Ramshaw regularly kick over 90 yards in the 60's. Both were fullbacks and would often go beyond the centre from the goal square on the larger West Aussie grounds. Malcolm's kick was closer to 75 metres on the short 160 metre Princes Park. Malcom was forward of the centre square which means he was about 55 metres out. The player on the mark would have been on today's 50 metre arc. The ball travelled no more than 15 - 20 metres past the goal line, giving the estimtated maximum distance distance of of 75 metres. Given that this was an after the siren kick for a match winning goal, it is still one of the greatest moments in VFL history.
He might of kicked from 50-55 but it went thru well above the post. gotta be worth another 15m. It was like he was launching a little satellite into orbit.
Exactly. When 50 metre lines were introduced into our game, the one thing that I can remember is the exact spot on the ground at Princes Park where they would have been located. Malcolm Blight would have been no more than about 60 metres out from goal in the position on the ground where he kicked the goal from. The kick would have travelled about 80 metres because it must have gone at least 20 metres back behind the goals after it had passed through them.
Don't be fooled. The ground didn't have 50 metre lines marked on it at the time. That's because most footballers today don't know how to kick the ball long. They don't even know how to hold the ball correctly for a torpedo. I miss the dropkick. The good players would kick the ball 80 metres and further. Seen a number of dropkick goals from the centre of grounds 175 metres long. Still Malcolm's Torp is longer than my best dropkick or torp. I could kick the ball 60 - 65 metres. The best kick I have seen is Graham Ramshaw. Graham won a national log kick competition in 1968 with a drop kick that travelled 88 yards (80 metres). I've seen him kick the ball over 90 metres.
Who cares who won it? Seriously.. it's long ago and the result doesn't matter. But that goal was amazing. I come back to watch every now and then and marvel at it.

Its an awesome kick no doubt, but guy on the mark is around where the 50m is these days. Blight started his run up a long way out which added to the illusion. I'd say he was around 60m out when he kicked it, which is still a bomb.
Has to be at least 75 metres, maybe 77-78m. Went through the goal half way up. Longest I've seen. Assuming the oval was marked out correctly of course.
Malcolm was forward of the centre square when he kicked the ball. Princes Oval is 160 metres in length, which means he was less than 60 metres from goal when the ball was kicked. Judging where the ball landed, it was still an impressive 70 to 75 metre kick.
