Congratulations to your friend for such a score! Years ago, I picked up an original M31 German mess kit for 8 bucks. It had approx. 20% of the original paint remaining, but other than that, no damage whatsoever. I still have it in my collection.
One of my camping backpacks is items from thriftstores. Some of it is military surplus, some is old camping gear and some are repurposed household items. Its the one most fun to camp with
Thrift stores and flea markets are awesome. Got an m 45 mountain sleeping bag for 5 bucks at salvation army about 3 years ago. A full set of alice web gear at flea markets over a 4 year period.
In the British Army we had mess tins of aluminium with a handle - you could make your own lids or use the smaller inside the larger one as a kit option, not the lightest either- the spirit blocks were used too, always more than one with BCB burners. They are easily available online from UK Preppers store and otherplqces, don't pay over £7/$8 for them unless with the plce belt order pouch, even then not over £12/$13
Thanks for the vid. As far as Aluminum cookware is concerned, it's okay for cooking certain foods. Anything with tomato sauce isn't recommended. I boiled water in an Aluminum pot on the kitchen stove and the interior turned really dark, almost black. It took a lot of scrubbing with abrasive cleansers to get it shiny again.
I've been looking for the French 3-piece; those rectangular pans look like they'd bake bread or serve as a dutch oven. Great luck finding what you found!

Nice. Stuff like this rarely turns up in thrift stores around me. Almost never.

The handle is used with the big pot. Sportsman’s guide had these years ago, wish I had bought more than one.
