    I appreciate the review. Do not assume its laughable. Alot of us are new and live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford good kits and want to prep. This makes something possible rather than nothing. Its important! Ty!

      Glad you enjoyed it. I was more talking about the gear snobs who think if they dont spend 400 bucks on a cook set and 500 on a knife that it means certain death in a SHTF situation lol I fully understand paycheck to paycheck, when I started prepping that was how it was for me. Thats the main reason I cover affordable stuff!

      A decent cook kit is the polish mil surplus mess kit runs about $10.00 I like it much better than this kit in regards that it's pot is deeper to cook more for yourself or two people . I live out west and plan on supplementing my food supply with wild edibles along the coast and inland . Someone who is bugging out may not have a retreat to stay at and in most instances it is advisable to be nomadic and in a small group to not over hunt a area or have to have a big fire to cook with.

      The Stanley pan with an MSR SS plate as a lid is heavier but doesn't warp like this kit.

    I bought one a couple years back to throw in the car. Nice little kit, which one can stick in small containers of pepper, salt, and seasoning salt(Lawyer's). I also have matches, some chicken and beef bullion cubes, some Lipton Instant Cup of Soup and some Real Lemon packets. It's compact and easily to store and being stainless steel is a bonus.

    What I have done is gone to the metal shop near me and bought a round piece of copper small enough to fit inside the kit. I use this as a heat diffusor by putting that piece of copper over the stove, and then the pot on top of that. It spreads the heat out to the whole bottom of the pan and keeps that one super-hot spot in the center from happening.

    I just got through cooking stroganoff in this thing. This little set is incredible for the price. The stainless steel is thin, but that's what you want in a backpack. Light and yet strong enough to do the job. The other thing is that they designed the handle on the pot quite a bit better than my old set. If you pull that handle up it locks into place and you can pour from the pot without having to grab the hot side to keep it tilted. Amazing for 6 bucks and well-thought-out

    Just bought this today as part of my emergency cooking gear. Also got the Ozark Trail stainless steel grill to use as a cooking table for my fold-up wood-burning stove.
    These are high quality, yet inexpensive cooking ware. A great value too!

    You know, if the knob on the pot lid unscrews, you could probably replace it with a small steel eyebolt and really boil up some water or melt some snow if needed. Also, these would be great to toss into a "Stuck on the Side of the Road" Kit. That way, if anyone breaks in and steals your Kit, you haven't lost an expensive set. Thanks for the Video and Take Care.

    For the water boiler/cooker, use the Stanley cook set (with cup graduations) he has demoed here along with the stainless steel cup for $20. To use with this system, he has made a stove out of a silverware basket which is usable with liquid fuel stoves or twigs/sticks. That will be $25 total if you can't find the silverware basket cheaper.

    Thanks for updating us on Ozark trail's latest offerings. I discovered the brand's merits only late last year, as I put together one of their double-walled steel bottles and a small cup into a cook-and-carry water package that replaced a much more cumbersome system. All for less than $15.
    I need cooking gear next, to go with my stove, so this review is right up my alley.

    Even though this video is 3yrs old I been having this set for 5yrs and still use it til this day. I did make one mod not using the plate what I did was drilled a hole in the center and added a knob to make a lid for the skillet using the plate. Not a bad piece of gear after being season good.

    Much cheaper than what is offered on Amazon. If the handle tends to not stay put, find a small stick about the length of the handle and slip it in and that will keep the handle extended. I got that idea from Blackie Thomas. Again another good video and review. Thank you very much.

    Luckily I was in a Walmart at the right time I bought 2 ozark trails 2 pot sets on clearance for 7 bucks each . Added a stainless cup to each kit , built a large and small tomcat stoves for each kit , also made custom windscreens for each pot out of tin cans , all nested together in the original size of the purchased kit with room for scrubby, and spice straws ,, absolutely love the kits , also have 2 Stanley pot cup sets with nesting cups , and 4 32 oz stainless single wall bottles with nesting walmart stainless cups ,, screw gsi and nalgene prices ,, got the bottles at an outlet store , for 7 bucks each ,, cheapest price online was 15.94 for the same bottle ,, correction they are 40 rove brand bottles ,, . I'm setting pretty for some off the beaten path time ,, Thinking seriously about these for the fry pans and plates to complete everything ,, and what does two small pots hurt to have extra ? Lol.

    I bought 5 of this sweet little SS kit. I'll take SS over aluminum most anytime. I thought they would be nice give-a-ways when someone forgets theirs. I'm keeping two for myself and my hubby for short day walks in the woods. The pot w handle is 0.5 quarts (2 cups). If your recipes call for 2 cups of water you can just go-shy a little and usually will be fine. That will give you some boil room on the pot. The plastic cup is 7 oz. Again shy of a full 8oz if you do use it for dry or wet measuring. All in all it's not bad for what it is. There are times when I would grab that instead of my Trangia 27 cookset or my Trangia 28 Mini just for the extra lids and pot handle.

    Thank you for the review. I have the same set in aluminum and I don't like it. As you said, the pot is very small and it took me a long time to boil enough water to refill my water bottles. I also had trouble cooking in it. Even though I had a good layer of cooking oil, things burned and stuck to the pan. In my opinion if you're trying to cook for several people, you may want to consider something bigger and better. However, in a bad situation I think I will be lucky to have it with me. It does work but maybe just not as I wanted.

    More info:
    I liked your video and found it helpful because I have not yet used my new mess kit like yours. Some points you missed: The description on the box says locking frying pan handle. Well...it locks when you close the kit for storage but not when it is open. I fixed the open floppy handle by clipping a paper clip onto the pan where the handle meets the pan. Use a black spring paper clamp not the wire thing called a Gem clip. It's not heavy duty but neither is the pan. Also the pot bail locks when it is in the up position. I looked specifically for this function because s free-swinging bail on a pot of boiling water is dangerous and ineffective. Good video.

    • @Iridium242
      @Iridium242  5 лет назад +1

      I pushed that metal clip forward on the pan and it did lock open (or at least it felt like it in the video) I will have to check again to see if for some reason I was mistaken on that. I have not played with it since the video as my wife had a stomach bug and I was taking care of her... She is better now so I will check on it. I was thinking of replacing that bail on the pot, but yeah you do make a good point, I dont want that pot swinging around and yes it does lock when upright. Thanks!

    Your pan looks about like mine did after I tested it out recently and then washed it. I had the heat turned up to high at first and scorched the oil pretty quickly. LOL

    Trade the plastic cup to one of those compact rubber cups and you can put quite a bit of stuff in that pot!

    I like that it's now SS instead of aluminum 👍 TFS

      Yes it's much more durable than the aluminum but not much otherwise. I don't worry about the aluminum causing health issues like Alzheimers, etc. At my age, I don't care anymore.

      I'm not so concerned about the durability of the SS, or the health concerns of the Aluminum. I'm looking at clean up....the way I clean up, the SS is better than the Aluminum 👍

    I was about to buy this when I saw it. but the SS seemed too thin for my liking. I did see the larger set though from OT that is also SS and $23. It comes with a large skillet and pot. Maybe you can review that. Seems like a really good deal with heavy use.

      Yup, I plan on doing as much ozark trail cook sets as I can find in the local walmart here. BTW the skillet is thin but the pot is very thick, I plan on cooking with this set tomorrow over an open fire and with a tripod for the pot to see if it holds up!

    I have a similar kit made by Stanley except mine have two cups with it and two plates which I can eat in. I have spoons which I can use to eat with which was not included with the mess kit. The skillet would have cleaned up if you had put butter or oil in it before cooking your meal.

    • @Iridium242
      @Iridium242  5 лет назад +1

      I put some butter in but i think I had the heat too high, its nice and shiny now, I cleaned it up, but will be testing it more in the future, its cheap enough so if it gets stained, not a big deal. :)
