    The whole kit came in just under $400. I wouldn’t call it inexpensive by any means. It could be that this store was in California, might have something to do with the price being more than I expected.

      Although, I would NOT go with the Mini now that the Micro is available. It's roughly the same size, has a much better flow rate and is only a few dollars more than the Mini. BUT ... I have not yet seen them at WalMart. In fact, I've only seen one "in the wild" (i.e. - any of my usual outdoor sports stores).

      @@michaelhursey9 I was at a local outdoor store the other day and they were selling the micro for $25. I'd definitely go with it over the Mini. The flow rate is just too frustrating with that one when you're looking to stock up a few litres for the day. It seems to take an eternity. The flow for the Micro is pretty close to that of the classic Sawyer Squeeze.

    As a new hiker it is hard to justify spending the big bucks. Everyone has to start somewhere. The gear that gets you out there is the right gear and you upgrade from there. At least that's what I'm doing. It works for me.

    • @cobbler88
      @cobbler88 5 лет назад +4

      True. I just got into it heavier the last couple of years. There ARE a few better options if you don't have to shop at WalMart, though. You'll probably not want a sleeping bag chewing up that much pack room, for instance, and it probably weighs about 3.5 to 4 pounds. There's a good option that packs down small (and weighs 14-18 ounces, depending on the size) that will be great for temps down into the 40s (depending on how warm you sleep) for $80. But if you're just camping in the summer, just get the $20 camping quilt Walmart now has. It packs down to around the same size and I'd guess that would be fine if lows don't dip below the 50s.

    • @hurmzz
      @hurmzz 5 лет назад +2

      Just be carefull not to waste on the cheap stuff that will last a few trips or less, or the plain useless shit they sell nowadays. Offcourse everybody does it and you’ll laugh about it later, but it’s better not to buy stuff you might need if you see it cheap but wait untill you are ready to buy the quality. A lot of things can be used for multiple purposes and not relying on a dedicated tool only increases your skill with the other tool. And that is priceless.

    A suggestion for dealing with wound covering instead of gauze and tape, get a supply of women's sanitary minipads, and a couple rolls of stretch tape. The pads are sterile and easily unwrapped from their individual wrapper, they also have some light adhesive on the outside that helps to secure them to the stretch bandage and they don't stick to the wound. The stretch bandage helps to provide pressure to control bleeding. We used these to quickly treat my brother in law for transport to the ER when he cut his leg with a chainsaw, the ER staff were impressed with how effective our treatment was.

    • @GrayBeardedGreenBeret
      @GrayBeardedGreenBeret  5 лет назад +1

      Thats good to hear that you were able to take care of your brother in law by improvised means. Sometimes that is what you are down to and you have to use what you have. Having said that, you would have been able to do that same thing with the gauze if you had it. I always recommend people purchase and store actual medical supplies to use and improvise when they have to rather than improvising on purpose. I wouldn't personally recommend purchasing and storing feminine hygiene products for wound care instead of purchasing actual medical supplies meant for wound care. Good comment, thanks for opening up this conversation.

    I live in the Adirondacks and I also use a Sawyer Mini filtration system. My wife and I did some winter camping in the Long Lake region and being the ever resourceful woman that she is suggested I make a lanyard for the Sawyer and wear it around my neck inside of my coat to keep it from freezing and it worked but I recommend blowing out as much water as you can after you use it before putting it back in your coat, don't ask how I know this, lol. Good luck on your outings looking forward to seeing how this gear preformed for you.

      Now that the Micro is available, you'll likely want to switch to that. It's the same size with a much better flow. For my Mini, though, I went to the hardware store and bought a few rubber caps they put over the ends of screws. I place one of those over the non-capped end of the Mini. That keeps my Mini from dripping all over everything once I'm done using it and blowing water out.

Drilled a couple of holes in the rim, a wire bail and it worked. I realize you're going for straight out store bought, just throwing that out there. My Walmart carries self adhesive "sports tape " in wider widths, but you're correct, their first aid section sucks. The Ontario is made just 7 miles from me. Probably 1095, maybe 1075. Have had that same knife that I was issued in the mid eighties. Use it quite regularly ever since, first in the army, hunting, first response. It has never failed with the exception of the stone breaking in half. Since I was using it on operations, I subdued the handle and sheath with Kiwi black leather dye. Been performing good leather care on it and it’s still like new. That particular knife was not intended to have a narrow grind as that could possibly cause a chip or break out on the edge when self extricating from an aircraft (as explained to me in S.E.R.E). They do need sharpened frequently. If I’m not mistaken, Ontario Knife was either one of the primary source contractors or was an alternate fulfillment source.
    On a second note. I read an earlier comment about sanitary napkins as an alternative for abdominal pads. I work in the medical supply industry and they are the same makeup. In some cases they are the exact same product just packaged and labeled differently, at least they are with the major medical supply companies I’ve worked with.
    Third... two Walmart’s less than 10 miles apart in relatively similar sized communitiesare worlds different. The one five minutes closer has one isle of camping, hunting, ammo (no guns) and survival items. The other has an isle for each and guns!
    Great stuff! Enjoy the vids and info looking forward to more!!

    Great idea about the exercise mat. I hadn’t considered that before. I need to start thinking outside the box more often. Unfortunately not all Walmarts are created equal. Some stores have better stuff than others. Some are better at maintaining stock than others. Fortunately there is always Amazon when Walmart falls short which is often these days. Great video! Can’t wait to see the gear you purchased in use.

      I am lucky enough to have at least 6 Walmarts within about a 30 minute drive. So if I have to, I got options. It also learned not to rely on their app concerning availability. It often says they have items in stock but really aren’t.

      One note on the mat. It looks like the same mat I got for exercise from Walmart, complete with thath slide-on carrying strap. It's a good bit heavier than the cheapie blue mat usually found in the camping area, and (at the WMs I've been to) about twice the cost. It depends on what your trade-offs are regarding maybe a little more comfort and taking on more weight.

    When I look at gear I'm reminded of Mrs. Gatewood, who hiked the AT in 1955 with a raincoat, an army blanket, and a shower curtain. She was 67 years old. I think of her list and think that I'd add a pot and a water kit. I thought she used a metal pail to carry things. If so that would work as a water kit in a pinch.

    Thanks for the video. Shows that a huge investment is not required to get out and have some fun on the weekend. When my kids were young I took them camping several times every summer. All our gear came from Canadian Tire (equivalent to Wal-Mart). Did not take much money to enjoy the outdoors.

    Good job with the gear selection. Somethings at walmart are tough to compromise on. For serious first aid from walmart I get a box of 4 inch gauze pads and pull 20 of them out of the pack, 2 gauze rolls. A roll of cling tape, and a piece of a straw with about 15 inches of waterproof medical tape on it. All of that fits into a quart size ziplock with a pack of cellox type of clotting agent. Makes for a great little trauma kit. Keep one in all of my bags, and the glovebox of our cars.

    • @dukemaggiola6036

      I also think in terms of larger than band aid injuries, at Walmart I found a clotting product by the guy who makes pillows, you've seen his commercials, 3 pak for 5 bucks, been fortunate, haven't had to use yet !!!

    • @ungratefulpeasant8085
      @ungratefulpeasant8085 5 лет назад

      Just so were clear, never use a pad unless you have nothing else. They are not steril, and who knows what they may leave in the wound. Tampons are also a bad idea, they leave particals behind that can, and will cause infection.

    I'm a section and day hiker, so my needs are a bit different from TGBGB. On the subject of the Sawyer Mini, I always keep one on me. When it's below freezing, I routinely wear a vest over a long-sleeve shirt with a jacket over both. I keep my Sawyer Mini in an inside vest pocket so that it can't freeze. I've never had an issue.
    If you do carry plastic bottles with the Sawyer (I do.) then I would personally recommend Smart Water bottles over nalgene type bottles. They thread right onto the Sawyer. Carry two and you can use one as a "clean" bottle and the other as a "dirty" bottle.
    I'm really looking forward to seeing how the gear performs!

      You’re experimenting has matched mine for many things. This kit is no exception. I have to put this on the back burner a bit because so much of it was inadequate. I have to film why and how I fixed or attempted to fix all the problems I had just from getting it ready for the field. Some was good but some key items were crap

  • @500VulcanRider

    One thing I would recommend for your first aid kit is a couple of feminine napkins, they are sterile and very good for stopping bleeding and protecting small wounds

    • @GrayBeardedGreenBeret
      @GrayBeardedGreenBeret  4 года назад

      False. They don’t stop bleeding, they absorb it. I would never carry or recommend carrying an improvised means for potentially life-saving first aid when you can carry actual items meant for the purpose. Tampons and maxi pads are for feminine hygiene, nothing more.

    First-aid suggestion (outside of Walmart): A roll of good electrical tape (not Harbor Freight-quality). 3-M or Scotch brands - Get it at an electrical supply house. $4 - $5 dollars a roll. STAYS PUT. Be careful not to wrap it too tight. We use this on job-site cuts w/ paper towels (clean the cut out under flowing water 1st). Great for stopping bleeding on finger/ forearm cuts. Wrap it, tape it and keep on going. ~30 foot roll.

      I had the Ozark Trail kit, but just haven't had to boil that much water at any given time so I actually put it in a bag to donate the other day. I then got the $15 Stanley kit with the green resin cups that will never be used. But once I saw I could get a 750 ml titanium pot with lid and measurement markings from AliExpress for $20, that was it although I do still have the Stanley kit.
