I wish I had a wood turner like you around here, Gary. We have trimmed off chunks of a much-loved multi-trunk maple in our yard, due to storm damage, and it would have been great to keep a bit of that old friend in the house. You are lucky in your lovely elm!
Thank you J'Lyssa. very interesting I just finished one that I was going to make opposite of this. I had a few people think I should have went the other way. I still think this piece is best the way I did it. You will see in the video this Friday that the wood made the choice on what it should be. Hard to explain but you will see in the end. And I really like what it became. Thanks for watching, Gary

Simply stunning Gary. The shape is great, the grain & the burl area are great & the finish is amazing. Nice to have that tree handy in your back yard for when you want to 'chew on another piece of Elm'. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Thanks Don I do love the shape as well. Knowing your back ground I have a question for you. Before I ask I will say I chose this shape because I believed the piece would look best this way. I have had a few comments that told me I made it upside down. Now I read and respect all comments so it did not bother me one bit. So how do you think it would look the other direction? I have made lots the other direction but I wanted the light wood on the bottom as well as the burls. I do have plans of making another one that direction if I have a piece with the correct colors. I guess your mind says all are made the other way. Mine says there are no rules on this. Thoughts? Gary
Thank you Neil! I am looking forward to turning more of the pieces with burl. But I have a stack of the wood that does not but it is still beautiful. Not only does the water based finish dry clear it is so easy to use. Have a Great New Year, Gary
Thanks Tanya, there is a huge void at the base from where it had split but I have had it checked out by 2 tree services and they say it is plenty strong. So it will stay where it is. The back side of what you saw has even more burls that stick farther out. I have finally learned how to look at them without seeing nothing but nice burled bowls. Thanks for watching!
Hi Gary... I really like this hollow form... the contrasting colours and the burr wood looks amazing... good choice with the finish... that tree in your garden is just going to keep on giving... great video... take care...All the best.....Andy
Thank you Andy, the wood is amazing looking an a joy to turn. Seems we need to have it trimmed a lot because it grows fast. And now they have taken down a row of Arborvitae that was behind it and a huge Cedar tree. So our Elm will get more light and probably grow faster. Sadly behind us was the original farm house of our area and now it will become a small development of houses. There will be 10 houses instead of one and they took down over 80 trees...progress! Happy New Year my friend, Gary
Thank you very much! Those burls are very interesting. I was going to call this video Burl Hunting. But I did not have to hunt very long. Take care, Gary

Thank you Gord it is an amazing piece of wood. Well the coffee did not help one bit so the coke probably wont either. I suppose if you added something to either one of those it would do something for the thought pattern...but it would make it worse...lol Happy New Year buddy! Gary
Turned out great, Gary! Good choice on the finish and design changes. Next burl, turn the same shape, but put the lighter colored burl to the top, and the dark heavier looking heart wood to the bottom. I think that would be even more showy for that beautiful burled elm wood. Happy 2021. Hope it is your best year ever!

Hi Gary, Beautiful!!! The contrast in the colours is fantastic. I didn't like the original shape either. The final shape works so well and those burrs are amazing. Happy New Year my friend. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw and you are right. The contrast of the colors are amazing. Yeah the original shape was not working. My thinking process was not working so well back then. Those burls are really strange. Most have little holes in them but some have closed up. Probably because they are fairly fresh growing. Happy New Year, Gary
Can’t argue with your thinking Gary, thought sure you were going to double turn it around but your shape is spectacular.beautiful grain coloring. Happy New Year Buddy!

Love the burls!! Happy New Year Gary!
Thank you so much!
Happy New Year,
Gary
That is a stunning piece, Gary. Beautifully done , my friend. I didn’t know that drinking coffee might help you like something better. I don’t drink coffee but do you think Coke might help with that? LOL! Great video, buddy! Happy New Year, my friend. Stay safe!
.....Gord
Thank you Gord it is an amazing piece of wood. Well the coffee did not help one bit so the coke probably wont either. I suppose if you added something to either one of those it would do something for the thought pattern...but it would make it worse...lol
Happy New Year buddy!
Gary

Incredible
Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it Stan it has become one of my favorites.
Thank you Valerie and that is a good idea. I do have a few pieces that look similar to this one did on the outside. Plenty on the tree but I am not climbing up there.
For sure 2021 should be better than this last one. Happy New Year,
Gary
My goodness, Gary. That is spectacular. Between you and Phil, I've got my dose of inspiration for the week. I hope your new year is off to a positive start!
Thanks so much Perry. Once the new shape showed up all the hidden beauty showed up as well.
Well so far one things is positive...2020 is gone.
Happy New Year,
Gary
Looks beautiful
Happy new year to you and your family!
Thank you Santo and a Happy New Year to you and yours,
Gary
Hello
Très belle pièce avec un bois d'aspect moche
Mais la découverte est superbe 👍
Merci beaucoup Damien. D'accord, le bois est un peu moche à l'extérieur mais juste plein de beauté à l'intérieur.
Merci d'avoir regardé,
Gary
Great job 👍
Thanks so much...happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary, Beautiful!!! The contrast in the colours is fantastic. I didn't like the original shape either. The final shape works so well and those burrs are amazing.
Happy New Year my friend. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw and you are right. The contrast of the colors are amazing. Yeah the original shape was not working. My thinking process was not working so well back then. Those burls are really strange. Most have little holes in them but some have closed up. Probably because they are fairly fresh growing.
Happy New Year,
Gary
That is truly beautiful, thanks for sharing! 👍🏻
Thank you very much...happy you liked it.
Happy New Year,

Can’t argue with your thinking Gary, thought sure you were going to double turn it around but your shape is spectacular.beautiful grain coloring. Happy New Year Buddy!
Thanks kid! Others have said they thought I would flip it again and it would look good that way. But I was set on going this way and It worked out.
Happy New Year my friend,
Gary
WOW!
Thank you Louis!
