    I wish I had a wood turner like you around here, Gary. We have trimmed off chunks of a much-loved multi-trunk maple in our yard, due to storm damage, and it would have been great to keep a bit of that old friend in the house.You are lucky in your lovely elm!

      Thank you Nan, when friends have a tree cut down or it falls down I like to turn them something from the tree to remember by.

      Thank you J'Lyssa. very interesting I just finished one that I was going to make opposite of this. I had a few people think I should have went the other way. I still think this piece is best the way I did it. You will see in the video this Friday that the wood made the choice on what it should be. Hard to explain but you will see in the end. And I really like what it became.
      Thanks for watching,

    Simply stunning Gary. The shape is great, the grain & the burl area are great & the finish is amazing. Nice to have that tree handy in your back yard for when you want to 'chew on another piece of Elm'. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад

      Thanks Don I do love the shape as well. Knowing your back ground I have a question for you. Before I ask I will say I chose this shape because I believed the piece would look best this way. I have had a few comments that told me I made it upside down. Now I read and respect all comments so it did not bother me one bit.
      So how do you think it would look the other direction? I have made lots the other direction but I wanted the light wood on the bottom as well as the burls. I do have plans of making another one that direction if I have a piece with the correct colors.
      I guess your mind says all are made the other way. Mine says there are no rules on this.
      Thoughts?

      Thanks Tanya, there is a huge void at the base from where it had split but I have had it checked out by 2 tree services and they say it is plenty strong. So it will stay where it is. The back side of what you saw has even more burls that stick farther out. I have finally learned how to look at them without seeing nothing but nice burled bowls.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад

      Thank you Andy, the wood is amazing looking an a joy to turn. Seems we need to have it trimmed a lot because it grows fast. And now they have taken down a row of Arborvitae that was behind it and a huge Cedar tree. So our Elm will get more light and probably grow faster. Sadly behind us was the original farm house of our area and now it will become a small development of houses. There will be 10 houses instead of one and they took down over 80 trees...progress!
      Happy New Year my friend,

      Thank you Billy the wood is amazing and I have been watching that tree grow for 48 years. Tried to cut it down about 35 years ago because of bad damage from an ice storm. But it grew back and that is why it has burls. Pretty sure the damage on the tree is why.
      The Acks over any finish is about the only way I use it. Lacquer oil base poly and shellac plus the water based poly. I love that water based poly. It dries really fast. Yesterday it was about 36 outside and with little heater going in the shop I was lucky to have 45 degrees. I put on the Polycrlic and it dried like it was summer time. Amazing stuff. And I like how it is clear and does not tint the wood. I do like some woods to have a tint but not this piece of Elm and not the Maple I did yesterday. Give it a try you will love it.
      Take care my friend,

      Thank you Jon. It is a very special wood and highly sought after.
      A few years ago I could have gotten a number of dump trucks full of English Walnut. A nephews in laws took down a large walnut orchard and was just burning the wood in big piles. I took a lot and probably should have taken more.

    Turned out great, Gary! Good choice on the finish and design changes. Next burl, turn the same shape, but put the lighter colored burl to the top, and the dark heavier looking heart wood to the bottom.
