MUSE Bass Riffs - Chris Wolstenholme's Bass Tone Recreated

- Hey guys!
First video on my new channel is a compilation of some of my favourite Muse basslines.
All the bass in this video is solely recorded by me through various effects pedals, into a MarkBass SuperPro DI Box, and an M-Audio FastTrack Pro Interface.
The drums were either taken from Multi-Track recordings or recreated by me. The guitar in Hysteria and SS is also from the Multi-tracks. There is no other bass in the video other than what I recorded myself.
Pedals used:
-EHX/Sovtek Black Russian Big Muff
-Gromtech Effects Aminato (Human Gear Animato Clone)
-Prunes and Custard clone
-Boss OC2 Octaver
-Boss LS2 (x2)
I will be putting together some tutorials on how to get various sounds soon, so let me know which ones you would like to see first!
Thanks for watching and please subscribe :)
A few people have been asking me, you can buy the Gromtech Human Gear Animato Clone here:

If you have any questions regarding any sounds feel free to email me at musebasssounds@gmail.com
"Hysteria" is one of THE classic basslines of our time.
Best bassline ever!
Hysteria has been voted as the track which features the best bassline of all time.
@@luh8389 By whom? When?
@@luh8389 it's on par with the intro to n.i .b
Fury..omg..you know when your face turns to a frown and you aren't even sad...that sound did that to my face bro.
AKA the "stank face"
When the bells kicked in at 2:59 I half expected to hear Too many puppies by primus
Griffin Young I literally thought the same thing
Muse did a Too Many Puppies intro to Futurism once ruclips.net/video/Dql3GZbrnig/видео.html
Same
Personally I'm not the biggest Muse fan, but I'm a HUGE fan of Chris Wolstenholme! He's such a credit to the bass guitar.
That Futurism tone though....my god, its so good.
i liked the sound on fury
Elijah Lanning The notes seem to bloom
Big muff on Fury ?
Sounds great! You really saved the best for last - Futurism sounded AWESOME!!!
Alexander Wright oh no, spoiler😱
How have I never discovered this channel until now? This is perfect
I would like to see a video on Histeria. Chris Wolstenholme plays powerful bass.
Great job! This is probably the most spot on Muse Bass tones video I've seen on RUclips and I've watched all of them lol. Keep it up look forward to your future videos!
Fantastic Muse bass tones. Well done mate.
Man this is pure eargasm
This video is going to be on repeat when I get my bass 🤘🏼
Please show us the effects you used in each song, so we can know the different tones and how to get it
That was really good apart from Uprising. The sound was a bit muddy in places too. But Futurism was bang on.
For uprising use two channels. 1 clean one with an octave, the animato, big muff, prunes and custard
I always liked the tone and effect on Unnatural Selection, you recreated it really well!
*„I will be putting together some tutorials...“* I guess nothing's coming :(
Dude please i need more this is awesome
This is AWESOME. It sounds so good!! The only thing that made me sad is that you included the verse but not the chorus of The Handler, which is one of my favorite bass lines ever.
Dude, we need more of this!
amazing bass sounds! incredible sustainer
On some parts, the sound is too deep. I think it's because the PJ's pickup. But overall, u did a great work! I would loved to see behind the scene of how u set the effect pedals of every Muse's songs.
Ronald Arnoldi The mud on some parts is because, as the uploader mentioned in another comment, the strings are shot up 10 year old factory things. Still a class video!
I watch this and it makes me happy. Nice work
Would like to see how to get the Dead Inside or Stockholm Syndrome Sound first. Good Work ;)
Stockholm is just the big muff
Love the "Futurism" surprise at the end :D !
I miss Hyper Music, amazing video dude
Great job, I would to like to see you cover Deadstar and Muscle Museum
Really pretty good. A bit dark in places…but really good spread of tones…3 channels on each???
bassmandudge thanks!
I was using 10 year old factory strings in those recordings, might be the reason for a bit of darkness - and it could've done with a bit of EQing
3 channels on most, KOC and SS had 2 and I think that's all
Sonudcheck Muse Bassist Chris Woolstenhome Bass Guitar Tone Muse Ömer Şafi Aktaş En Sevdiğim Yabancı Müzik Grupları Muse Live At 2
I like the sound you made, technique and performance. Please go ahead on how to make this grate Muse bass guitar sounds.
When Fury came on, it made me wanna drop down to my knees and bow to an invisible Wolstenbeast
Tutorials for sounds when?
Tone in the handler is dope.
Map of the problematique ?
My favourite Muse song actually! But the bass is not the most exciting to play :P
i prefer exo politics
I would like to listen to Handler full version! The beginning sounds so cool
I might make a full cover sometime soon :)
Would love to see more about your pedalboard! Great video.
Morgan Griffitts I'll be uploading a video with my pedalboard soon! It's changed a bit since I made the video but the sounds is still the same. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email, i put some contact details in the bio :)
Cool thanks again man! Lookin forward to it.
A beautiful bass indeed, is this a Spector ?
Iskandar The Great just a cheap j&d luthiers bass haha. Can't see the logo because I taped the broken battery cover on the head 😬
Iskandar The Great no this is Patrick

As much as I love Chris Wolstenholme's playing, I seriously thought you were going to start playing _Too Many Puppies_ by Primus at 2:58

Great songs with some awesome bass lines but what about Muscle Museum or Uno of even the title track Showbiz?
Sei un grande, very nice from Italy! Respect for you
for me chris is up there with geezer. .
he's got the chops
@Muse Bass Sounds would be interested in discussing these sounds with you as I think we might be able to help each other out. Also, did you make your own Prunes & Custard clone or buy a ready made one? Cheers
Nice tones, but I think, you should put a compressor at the end of your chain to make the fuzz tone more smooth
Reapers and the main riff from Natural Selection please.
Where can I get a bass like this?
Wow you nailed them! I'm using big muff with mxr 6 band eq and kind of having trouble getting the original tones :(
Are those active pickups?
What is your guitar name?
Sounds cool
Bass guitar*
Its a j&d Luthiers bass
I always try to listen for the bass in songs but I always focus on the guitar and I’m like Chris where are you
what combination of pedals do you use in hysteria
Subscribed!!!!!
For this- "I will be putting together some tutorials on how to get various sounds soon, so let me know which ones you would like to see first!"
Naveen Kumar Mavi thankyou! I'm hoping to have some ready soon. I'm planning on doing one for Fury + Plug in Baby, one with just the simple Animato tones (hyper music, bliss, etc) to start off with. If you have any particular requests let me know and I'll try include them :)
It's been 3 years. Could you give us a written guide maybe?
I will get around to it one day!
Very good. Please, could you describe the settings you used?
Please describe settings for fury.
the big muff (the white) sounds similar like the black russian?
where's supermassive black hole?
BTW nice cover. what is that riff in the end of the vid?
Futurism
@@louie8604 oh which album?
@@Rusli1659LPSoldier I think it was a Japanese only bonus track on origin of symmetry
@@louie8604 oh Ok.
Whats that bass
Santiago Rios Arango just a cheap no name bass I got in Aus. Cost me about $200 I think
Awesome tones dude.
Why do you need two LS-2s?
Please edit the typo in the title. Great vid btw
Wher did you got that drums playing on the back? (Excellent video).
Thank you so much 😄, I play the guitar and this would be so helpful!!!
Hello what is the config and gear for Dead inside sound ?
Thomas Zimmermann Black Russian big muff and animato clone. Will try post a new video soon showing how to get the sounds
Buenísima!!
Come on man don't just leave us hanging, I gotta see how you got that handler tone
Nombre de la ultima canción?
for the handler for 7 and 8 fret play them on e and a string together it sounds better
Nathan McDonnell you can't play both on e string, it would only play 8th
Sorj Ternkiurn He said E and A string together
Time Is Running Out???
The Handler and Dead Inside, although I'm pretty sure it's an Akai Deep Impact he uses on Dead Inside, but I'm curious what you came up with.
Dead inside is identical to Hysteria: Clean and a hint of Big Muff, that's it for the bass guitar! That tone is supported by a synthesiser part mirroring the bass exactly. You could immitate the sound with a Deep Impact, but Chris really doesn't use it much, it's a VERY distinctive sounding pedal, you can hear it a mile off. Synth parts are so variable that Muse use them quite frequently to add high end to the bass (as per Hysteria, TIRO, Dead Inside).
There's a video of them live at the Mayan 2015 I think, you can REALLY clearly hear the synth part, it's turned up a little too loud in the mix. It's obviouisly mixed in far, FAR better on the studio version to the point where you can barely hear it, it becomes one with the bass (as they intended it to). Same goes for Hysteria! There's the odd show where they turn up the synth track too high, and you can hear it's absolutely identical to the album, backing up Chris playing the usual Muff/Animato/Clean rig. The modern tone is a bit weak and treble light, but on the odd ocassion they've absolutely NAILED it... Glastonbury 2004 was THE best Hysteria bass tone I've hear. Sounds to me like they actually ran the synth track through his amp, as if it were a bass guitar, which made it sit perfectly with the bass.
daemonsca I used animato big muff and clean. I have a deep impact and I can't get as close as with those pedals. Pretty sure it was recorded with muff and animato :)
Are all the pedals turned on when used?
This is awesome!! But I'm beginner! Need tablature. Please!!!!
what was that very last one?
A year later, no tutorials at sight
xMtysx02 had a tough and busy year (sick family etc) but I have been working on some stuff and am planning to upload some new videos in the next couple of months :)
Muse Bass Sounds chill brother!! And keep it up! Sick video tho
What settings were used on the pedals?
WHERE ARE THE TUTORIALS ON THE DIFFERENT BASS PEDAL TONES!!?!
I am interested in the Gromtech Human Gear Animato Clone!
Brenden Yao link is in the description Branden :)
Panic station is fun to play also
q pedal o efecto usaste para los sonidos de tu bajo en el video ?¡?¿ gracias
Jorge Coronel for most of the songs, it was Gromtech Animato, Big Muff, and Boss LS2 (to mix)
what is that bass guitar model
question!! how to you get rid of fret buzz??? i cant hear it at all here but in my music its so prominent
Your bass is needing a set up
@@TooManyEyesJoe Should I take it to guitar center and ask them to set it up properly?
@@epochatlantic4591 your frets are probably too high or you’re just not pressing hard enough
@@verse5981 im definitely pressing hard enough
@@epochatlantic4591 then you probably have raised frets. You should definitely go to a guitar center to get it checked out though
😍
Is he always playing on distortion?
Process please
Dude!!!! Help how do I get the hysteria tone?!!
what effects are u using?
how much would that cost in pedals ?
I can't do that thing on uprising :(
❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏻
Qué pedal usas? :)
What pedals are u using ?
Jorge Salcedo mainly Big Muff, Animato Clone, and Boss OC2. And I used a BOSS LS2 to mix the muff + animato together
How can I get some of these tones?
Tutonial for uprising plz😀
How did yo recreate those tones?
Which guitar is this?
What bass is that?
Why did you only ever post one video?
Abhinav Kashyap been super busy, life got in the way of making more - but I am planning on uploading some tutorials in the next few weeks !
Setting for histeria... please!!!
There's only one video to watch/listen to? Come on dude... get creating.
