I see a lot of comments mentioning Ben Simmons, so I’ll have you know that I also made a video covering his story: ruclips.net/video/HK_qr0uri4I/видео.html
Can we compare Markelle to Drose they have went through the same thing just different ways, aside from the shoulder, they both have/ had mental blocks after something (Drose jumping Markelle Shooting) But developed a game easier for them and smarter to how they play, now drose wasnt a bust and markelle isnt really a bust he is just a flower that hasn't fully bloomed and needs the time and opportunity to be that #1 pick
@@derangederedx9794 my definition of a bust is a player who hasn’t met expectations after 5 seasons, but his play before the acl tear was great, plus he barely played for his first 3 seasons so I’m gonna give him 2 more seasons
In hind sight, it looks to me as if something is wrong within the Philadelphia organization. Folks was a top prospect and busted, now Simmonds is experiencing similar problems? Someone explain what is going on.
God bless him. I really admire his story of starting out as everybody's golden kid, taking a hit beyond voluntary control then climbing slowly back up to his former self.
I don't think he climbed back to his former self. His former self should've been an all-star. He is far, far, far, away from that. Right now, he is just a serviceable rotational player
@@jeffreyware8778 well, i guess, it's very slowly and with no end in sight then.. i read it as he took a few years (slowly) to climb back to his old-self (now).
“Voluntary” is key though.. Some respectable members in the NBA think that he actually had a BMX type biking accident in the off-season that was undisclosed and kept from the 76ers. That disrupted his shoulder and inevitably forced him to get more medical help. Don’t know if it’s true but it would help explain a lot of the confusion.
It's really weird that he looked so fluid shooting in college and then over a single summer, it's like he got paralyzed and had to relearn how to walk or something. I think someone got into his head about his shooting form and it got stuck really deep in there. A lot of guys have weak jumpers coming out of college and start working with a coach to tighten up their form, but this is a case where it looks like it completely backfired.
@@Yungchris760 I mean, look at Lonzo Ball. His jumper was weird in college but it was effective. He got to the pros and had to change some things, now it looks quite a bit different. It happens all the time, but I really think it got way too deep into Fultz's brain and he started questioning everything.
@@logicaldude3611 lol yeah probably given it’s the 76ers The same organisation that cant help Simmons develop his shooting The way fultz shot the ball is similar to how Simmons shoots so kinda makes me question who the hell is the 76ers shooting coach? Lmao
I feel terrible for the kid, but he’s still got upside. He can play a solid all around game, maybe in the mold of DeMarr Derozan. And in the coming years, with lots of practice, he might just get his three back.
He wont be close to Demarr. If lebron James just never existed dude might have 2 rings. He woulda definitely been to 2 finals at the very least and he was the best player on that team that just kept getting spanked by the cavs.
@@greggyp8265 Demar is the best midrange shooter in the league. Not sure how you go from not being able to shoot to being compared to someone who is elite at a certain aspect of shooting.
The shoulder injury is no joke. I have a similar issue with my left shoulder. Whenever i raise it above my head, it feels the same as a jammed finger. Just a straight jolt of pain and the feeling of bone on bone when moving a certain way. My hat goes off to him for playing through that.
Markelle’s injury at the beginning of last year’s regular season tore me up so bad. With the way he was playing, he would’ve definitely been in the conversation for Most Improved Player 😔
That's a bad correlation analysis Fultz and Simmons 3pt problems are 2 completely different situations Fultz is still a mystery what really happened Since day 1 so without any influence from the 76ers he had a different jumpshot from college In fultz case there seems to be a mechanical injury problem Ben Simmons simply didn't train and was never held accountable and probably a bit of psychology Fultz is clearly willing to work on his jumpshot but he physically struggled to move his shoulder as he used to Ben Simmons will refuse to try to shoot
@@westbrick6393 they're two people who struggled to shoot 3 wearing number 20 or higher for Philadelphia And both number1 pick Everything else is different between the two I don't see how this little coincidence is proof about Philadelphia not training 3pt shooting well Two different problems with different situations that as you said actually have different outcomes Fultz 3pt ain't a big mess like Simmons
Hes a bust let's move on! A number 1 pick and when he was in Orlando in was front page news when he scored 15 pts!! The guy never should of been a number 1 pick all he does Is play a few games gets hurt for the rest of the year and so on. He'll be out of the league in a couple years I would think.
@@niggato23 I'm not the right person to ask as a sixers fan I never liked him and after his horrific playoff performance I dont even want him in Philly anymore.
I feel badly about all the shit he got. He was really just a kid, and it seems like he had a lot of personal issues going on. He's still only 23, so his story isn't over yet. He was playing better in Orlando, so I hope he continues to grow as a player. I completely understand why he was intimidated by big market teams too.... I couldn't imagine being a young, 19 year old player, playing for one of the most passionate/intense fanbases in the league. Just thinking about that makes me nervous. It definitely humanizes him for me. Sometimes we forget that these players are humans too, with problems and anxieties just like all of us.
@@mrpzpdx he shot 40% from 3 on 5 attempts a game in college, how can u say he didnt shoot well. Also he is a very good passer and always has been so yes he is a point guard

There was a darts player in England called Eric Bristow. He won everything, then out of nowhere he could no longer let go of the dart. The mind is a strange and powerful bit of kit.
The part where he says "It feels like someone is holding my arms down when i shoot" is the crux of it all. That sounds like chronic injury. This "thoracic outlet syndrome" was probably starting to develop toward the end of his college career and it didn't really manifest until he got to the league. Super unlucky for him, wow.

Andrew Wiggins playing the part as one of the top stars on the Golden State Warriors title run this year gives me hope for Fultz. I hope he can recover.
Wiggins was just highly overrated from the jump. The pressure put on these No.1 pics is much greater nowadays, as opposed to when Kobe and LeBron entered the league.
I feel like the stuff with his mom was a bigger deal than you made it out to be; based on the source you brought up (which I read when it came out) she was super controlling and their relationship was terrible, and some even said that one of the main reasons he went to Washington for college was to be as far away from home as possible. As much as the injury(s) hurt his shooting form/confidence, he was going through hell in his personal life and that had to have a huge mental effect as well
It really looks like it's a mental thing. That thing with his mom really stands out. He knew he was drafted for how sweet his 3pt-shot looked and associated it with his value as an NBA player. Suddenly, he hates the fact that being in the NBA made his life suck, now he hates the thing that took him to the NBA. It sounds like a sub-conscious thing to me. I bet if you erased the 3pt-line, he could hit long 2's from 3pt range easily.
@@dangelobelton7819 I don't doubt it, I'm just not sure that's the MAIN issue now and even then. In theory his long 2 point shot should translate to similar form at the 3pt line but it doesn't.
It’s a yips injury. A loss of control in neuromuscular function in one’s extremities. Most common in Baseball and Tennis players. That’s why he keep changing his shooting form and body mechanics it’s the usual therapy for yips. Roy Hibbert had the yips and he’s out of the league now.
"Thoracic outlet syndrome" is PERMANENT NERVE DAMAGE. He's changing forms to try to avoid the worst of the agony, but some people just aren't built to do some things, and in my opinion - just mine - these kids who were playing so much, so young, have really accelerated their own decline. The nerve damage is probably MOST painful doing exactly what basketballers DO most, like, jump shots and free throws? Have you noticed just HOW MANY Heisman Trophy winners now just... disappear? I know, football; but 2011 - RGIII wins as a junior - 2012 Johnny Manziel wins as a freshman; 2013 Jameis Winston, freshman. All of them superstars way back in HIGH SCHOOL? Superstars at 17, mentally and physically their health is ALL BURNT OUT - at the age of 25. Fultz is trying to "play through the pain" like how Real Men do - so hopefully he can at least afford a snazzy wheelchair and a real comfy coffin.
Loved to see him in that comeback arc this last season. He just had the best season of his career and what’s crazy is he’s still only 24. Everybody is acting like his career is over and he’s a bust, but he’s still got a lot of potential ahead of him.
He may not be the golden boy but he's in the NBA and a part of the rotation and he will get a few contracts out of it. Whether he reaches the basketball potential we know he has or not, he's already very successful. Take a look back at NBA history, so many guys in his position were already bounced out the league by this time. At least Fultz has the guts to keep pushing and trying
People don't realize how much skill it takes to get in the NBA, even the worst NBA player in history could destroy some random college player with one arm, and don't even think about them going against your average joe
When I was in college at U of Tenn, almost every day we would throw frisbee in our apartment parking lot. One day, on about my 5th throw, I held on to the Frisbee too long and threw it straight into the ground. Funny, right? I did it the next 9 throws and had to change my entire grip in order to get the Frisbee to go more than 10 ft. To this very day, I can't throw a Frisbee like I used to could. My grip is entirely different. No idea why, no idea what caused it, but I literally forgot how to throw a Frisbee. The mind is a fascinating thing.
If there was ever a tragedy in the NBA by injury, it's Rose. Genuinely think that if it wasn't for his ACLs, he would be discussed in the top 3 or 5 players in history.

Damn this is a rough story. I played tennis for many years and some matches I would feel like I forgot how to serve. The state of mind you get in to really be in the zone is a fleeting thing. Feeling your body vs over thinking. Some days I’d be serving bombs for three straight set full of aces and every once in a while just forget and be unable to toss the ball normally or synchronize my arms and legs and double fault a few times and then once my confidence was lost it would just snowball and get worse. Shit is a horrible feeling. Can’t even imagine suffering from that with all the pressure of being a no 1 draft pick in the nba damn.
yea, his mom definitely didn't help matters at all either. but the bigger issue is he's literally suffering from nerve damage. that's what thoracic outlet syndrome is. that means his arm is literally incapable of functioning correctly anymore. not very easy to diagnose either, as it won't show up as structural damage.

The instructors had a hard time improving the mechanics of shooters who had experience before coming to the military. lol I dont know about that, I play in an adult league and if I am not shooting enough during the week my shot isnt consistent at all, but you re right I have never completely forgotten how to shoot. If I remember right Fultz had an injury to his shoulder in the summer league his rookie year. I think it jacked up his muscle memory because yeah he cannot shoot for beans now
I respectfully disagree. I used to have a great shot but my mechanics were bad, it lead to my shot getting blocked more than it should have. It was very inaccurate. Once he was diagnosed on Dec 4, 2018, everything that Markelle went through before then was very explainable. It was 100% physiological problem of a compressed nerve in the right thoracic outlet at the base of his neck. Instead Dylan chose to deny his n-TOS and suggest he was lying or had some mental condition. Most Sixers fans still don't know the truth, thanks to medically inept people like Keith Pompey. And for Markelle to go through 10 months of daily PT was remarkable. There was no mention of the Performance members spreading lies to the media. They were eventually fired. They botched the Zhaire Smith episode also.

Yeah man, he had a great comeback at orlando but fuck injuries man. It's sad that he's having a great season but suddenly he tore his acl. I hope he can be back soon..
You can’t shoot like that in college and say the increased three point line mentally affect his shot. Based on his transition from college to the NBA seeing his form drastically change from smooth to horrid is due to some physical change.
he's suffering from nerve damage, which is what thoracic outlet syndrome is. that's why when he's having to rely on arm strength for a shot he just doesn't have it, because the nerves sending the signals through his shoulder are being compressed and not getting through correctly. results in muscle weakness, pain and numbness.
It’s so ironic how fultz was picked over lonzo because of Lonzos odd shooting form but it was fultz that ended up with all the shooting problems mentality and physically while Lonzo completely changed his shot to become a consistent shooter
Can we take a second to note how his mother was behaving? That's some incredibly fucked up shit she was doing. She isolated him from his support people and those who might have been support people. Having your mama, the one person who's supposed to be in your corner constantly overstep, trample on your boundaries, refuse to recognise you as an adult, attack and harass the people helping you and create tension between you and a star team mate must be incredibly difficult on your mental health. Really excellent video, engaging, comprehensive and great cuts. This story has always stuck with me, too. Wishing Fultz all the best, which I believe is the sentiment of most people
I've had major shoulder surgery. A shoulder injury will mess you up mentally. You never know when or if you can take certain shots. Easily pulled muscles. One minute all is good, 30 secs later you can barely lift ball over your shoulder to shoot. Even on street ball level, It will mess you up mentally
See I was thinking about something. The shoulder injury it’s like he was guarding his shoulder…. Ive always wondered why he didn’t go back to his college shooting form?
It’s a sad story. He will have a fruitful career as a role player, and who knows what comes of it. However, he was a #1 draft pick overall. This means very high expectations. He did not and has not fulfilled these expectations. It’s almost easier to be the underdog and work your way up, because nobody expected you to succeed anyway.
One of the most inaccurate representations ever made. It was from the standpoint of someone trying to discredit and make fun of Markelle's physiological disorder, called neurogenic-Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Miss TJ McConnell in Philly. Still giving 110% every second he's on the court. I loved him as a Sixer. And knew video was going to show Tatum killing it! Favorite player after Kahwi!
Why do team managers keep trading away players that are known to give maximum effort on every game? which, from what ive seen, its what Philly fans like and respect.
JJ went through something similar at the start of his career. He came in and his shots were going in and out and people were writing him off. He probably was empathetic to Fultz because of that experience.
The fact that Ainge only moved onto Tatum after Josh Jackson refused to work out with them makes me really wonder if he knew something. Was he just not interesting in drafting a guard?
I really empathize with him having to deal with this apparently psychological block while the media and fans scrutinized him everyday over something he seemed like he couldn’t control. I hope he does great with the magic.

I'd guess he suffered some kind of nerve damage on his shoulder right before the workout, and his agents and staff decided not to disclose it in order to secure a paycheck. Maybe he tried to rework his shot around the injury and it messed up his muscle memory. Maybe he never fully recovered and if I had to, I'd guess he had something pretty serious and his body junst couldn't return to what it once was.
@@nocapstold7294 thoracic outlet is where the nerves and blood vessels in your shoulder are being compressed by your collar bone, resulting in weakness of the arm and difficulty in making fluid motions. his description of feeling like someone was holding his arm down when he was trying to shoot fits the description of the injury exactly, as that is how people with it talk about having problems raising their arm. it is a chronic problem that literally just gets worse over time, and doesn't even have to have been the result of an injury at all. it also wouldn't show up as a structural problem, exactly as the 76ers said during their press releases. that he is even capable of playing at all is extremely impressive.
i actually doubt it was an injury that specifically caused it, as it can creep up on you over time like it did my wife. basically she was fine until one day it had built up to the point that it hurt, and then it progressively just got worse from there. she has no injury history that would have caused it. and his nerves may not actually be permanently damaged, if they can find a way to relieve the compression from his collarbone, since that's what is pressing down on the nerves/blood vessels, resulting in the problem.
Yea I played fairly high level sports and I see myself in him, not that I was that elite but I was elite when I believed in myself but nerves and stress could take that away if not properly managed. It only gets worse with each step up unless you have the right support system and the moment you think about something with fine mechanics is the moment you fuck it up. Dawg he’s 23 😐 he has plenty of time to find his game and progress in the NBA. He’s actually been playing noticeably better and looks like he’s getting accustomed to the league he’s playing in
@Sean Jones 23 is definitely young in the NBA. Any team in the nba and analyst would consider somebody who is 23 a part of the “young core”. @Sean Jones miles bridges is not a superstar player. Even for the general NBA player 23 is young. The average nba age is over 26 years old, meaning 23 is 3 years below the average NBA players age. 23 is young in the NBA dude, no matter how you’re trying to spin it.
I think it was a mix of the yips and the injury. Although the yips are more common in baseball, it’s still performance anxiety. He had a lot of pressure being the first overall pick; it explains why he was really good at moving mid ranges, because he didn’t have time to think about the shot. Which is why he entered the league with a different shooting stroke. He didn’t tell the 76ers because they could void his rookie contract for injury violating a clause in contracts
This was a dope vid !! It’s easy to tell that Fultz is a true hopper, he has a feel for the game that only the real ones have. The ability to get by guys without being insanely quick, the knack for finding his window to pull up, the deceptively explosive finishes around the rim. That stuff can’t be taught. It’s a shame that whatever happened to him happened. Fultz was due to injury, MCW was never a good shooter anyway he had one decent season shooting the ball and the rest his career not even close, and Ben Simmons just refuses. 3 completely different situations
Lets not forget jimmy butler said the organization was dis-functional. I think it really is the sixers messing their players up unintentionally. Just not a solid office.
His mid-range is always, ALWAYS beautiful, it's his FT and 3P that blocks him which are both more static shooting motion. The reason why his pull-ups look that beautiful is because he doesn't really to rely on the power coming out of his leg, he can basically jump, stretch his body, and shoot rather than systematically transferring power from his legs and nobody even realize this point at 76ers. Now with the Simons issues I do think 76ers' training staffs are insanely bad
he's suffering from nerve damage in his shoulder, that's what thoracic outlet syndrome is. which is exactly why he's having problems with the static shots, since so much of that comes from the shoulders as opposed to the legs. good diagnosis, not necessarily the right root cause.
In high school I made 45 3’s my junior year then going into my senior year my wrist started feeling tight and I had less grip in my shooting hand. I got X-rays and it turns out my ulna bone grew too long and made my tendons in my wrist and forearm tight and inflamed and made me had less grip. My shot sucked my senior year and I only made 26 3’s.
Holy shit, this is the only other time I've heard of this happening to someone else. I broke my arms playing football in middle school, had screws put in to fix it. A year later I have little to no mobility in my wrist and can't roate it. My ulnar styloid had grown 3x the length itshould have. My doc said he had never seen anything like it
He showed so much potential with the Magic that I can say confidently that he will be back better than ever. If he can get to 80% of NCAA Fultz, he's going to be an elite player.
@@killkuriosity Bro isnt even at his past college self, and he averaged 20 ppg, with 92% from the line, 80% of his college self would prob make him a all star in my opinion.
your memory isnt stored in the nerves in your shoulder tf you talking about? you could argue that the injury forced him to change his shot but to say the injury cause memory loss is just dumb
you see this in baseball a lot where players forget how to throw the ball and loose timing when to release the ball from their hand, they wind up throwing the ball wildly in the air or even straight down to the ground where their standing when it should be going to a teammate to make a play... purely mental from anxiety/stress.. these motor actions are automatic like breathing but after the first time it occurs the player can't help but think about it everytime he performs the action again. it's why Fultz can still shoot while in motion as his minds preoccupied and not obsessing about how to shoot properly
unfortunately, that's not it. he's dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome, which is compression of the nerves and blood vessels in the shoulder by the collar bone. it's basically nerve damage. it results in muscle weakness, numbness, and pain, and can degenerate to the point that you basically can't use your arm at all. that's why in shots where he's generating force from his legs he's fine as his hands and arms are just guiding the ball. when he has to generate the force from his arms/shoulders he basically can't get one arm to work correctly, which results in the screwed up shooting motion. feeling like someone is holding his arm down when he tries to raise it up is a classic symptom of this.
As a person who has had mutiple surgeries on their shoulder I can vouch and have sympathy for the difficulty and mental blocks that he has had for such a young player to go through.
No joke, he should talk to Charles Barkley about the “yips.” Charles got them so bad in golf, but he finally found a coach that got him to be able to swing freely again.
@@92cgray I think it can happen in any sport. I remember I had a terrible throw in men’s softball one game. Then I started to overthink how I grip the ball. I threw the ball off to the left for like a month 🤣. Was like someone took my accuracy from me.

The best theory I’ve heard came from an ESPN radio show. Brandon Robinson reported, and apparently Markelle Fultz had a motorcycle accident and injured his shoulder. His initial contract outlined that he wasn’t supposed to doing anything that would put him at risk of injury, which included riding a motorcycle. Him and his agent had to cover it up.
Everybody blaming it on things like confidence and mental issues are crazy lmao, you think anxiety is the reason his shoulder doesn’t lift all the way up? 😂😂 Its obviously an injury that’s the only thing that makes sense.
Definitely not just a shoulder injury. Anyone with a shoulder problem either would not play until it healed or wouldn’t shoot the mind bendingly bizarre way he was shooting. This was mostly mental. Glad he seems to have overcome it and figured it was only a matter of time.
Why did his midrange needed to turn to threes? The dude just needed to continue working on the part of his game that was strong and build his confidence. The threes would have came eventually as his confidence grew. Look at what is happening to Ben, same issue dude can play but this talk of no three points shooting is killing his confidence
Exaclty… seems like rookie Bosh or DeRozan would also get eaten alive by 6ers “fans”! I will compare it to how us Knicks fans treated Barrett… NYers can be assholes and aren’t the best fans but we understood that shooting is a multi-year process. no Knicks fan was mad when Hanlen didn’t have RJ shooting perfectly out of college… or when he was cold to start this last season… or even when his 40% 3pt shot fell to 29% in the playoffs… we’re hopeful for next season… you must give young players time to perfect their skills!
@@t-mofisher8922 What fans need to look at is progress, not everyone just jumps in the league and balls out, theres a figuring out process. Look at Jaylen Brown, when he first came into the league he averaged 6.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.8 assists. The last two years is when he started to average over 20 points, 6 rebounds and three assists. If we were Phili fans we would have been shipped him out and missing out on one of the best young two way players in the game. You've got to let the talent grown but more importantly let it grow for their play. Simmons and Fultz didn't work in Phili because of skill, they didn't work because of who they are player wise.

I watched him at Washington university his shot was smooth. He got with some trainer that changed his shot and shooting motion. Plus he did have a shoulder injury that hindered him also
the shot got changed because of the nerve damage that he started suffering from. that's what thoracic outlet syndrome is, the compressing of the nerves and blood vessels of the shoulder, resulting in lack of muscle control, muscle weakness, numbness, and pain. it starting to show up in his life would absolutely have resulted in his shot starting to change without him doing anything, which is probably why he had those bad shoot arounds predraft.

It’s almost guaranteed 1 of 2 things happened, either A. He did get injured and they just missed it, happens all the time. Or B. They tried to force him to change his shot that far into his career and it basically ruined not only his shot and form but also his confidence
it's an injury, thoracic outlet syndrome is the compression of the nerves and blood vessels in the shoulder by the collar bone. he's suffering from nerve damage.
I think it could be the 3P line being longer (Or at least part of it) because he shot .467 % from 16 to the 3P line last year with 10 % of his shots coming from there

Just my thought also. He used to have a very high set point. That's probably the best way to shoot close to mid range but falls off the further you are. Especially from nba 3pt range

I spent 8 years in the military and coming out of basic there was a trend that was very noticeable. The instructors had a hard time improving the mechanics of shooters who had experience before coming to the military. While the ones who had never shot in their lives usually picked up the mechanics quickly under supervision. Sure aiming down the sights and hitting a target within 30 meters is simple. Like Call of Duty. But once it gets to 300 meters it's not so simple. You can look down the sight and shoot all day and not figure it out. Maybe the rifle needs rezeroed. Maybe you have poor mechanics. Sometimes it can be as simple as learning the wrong things alone that make it very difficult to learn from someone else.

He got diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) and it was never a case of the yips. It's a pretty serious nerve injury which caused his jumper to fail him. Landry Fields had the same diagnosis and if you compare his jumper to Fultz's they are exactly the same.
And Fields was a solid NBA role player too for a bit there.
I think it's weird to be concerned about his jump shot when he is an amazing driver. People act like if you can shoot a 3 you don't deserve to be in the league look at John Wall Ron Artest or hell Shaq. Dude's amazing on 2k for me why? Cause I don't force him to shoot. Beyond that his mid range looks great. The NBA is such a toxic paparazzi filled twitter hell nowadays. The fact that his trainer was putting up tweets all the time about his struggles is kinda messed up. He's basically milking likes by using Fultz's struggle. Things between trainer and player should be left in the gym. It's disgusting how twitter is ruining Fultz's career.

Such an odd story... anyone who's been playing ball since they were a kid will tell you that shooting is like riding a bike... it develops from habitual learned behavior into instinct. Even at 40 yrs old I can go 6 months without shooting a ball but when I do pick one up it is essentially the same shot I've had since I was 15. Definitely seems to be a combination of injury/mental, but it seems like the mental completely took over at some point.
Great video and I hope Markelle comes back stronger from the knee injury.
I think i have the same problem as fultz cause sometimes my shot is very good then some days my shot is horrible like i can tell it’s not the same
Sounds like fultz has a serious case of the yips
I posted this comment elsewhere but it's fitting here: When I was in college at U of Tenn, almost every day we would throw frisbee in our apartment parking lot. The mind is a fascinating thing.
lol I dont know about that, I play in an adult league and if I am not shooting enough during the week my shot isnt consistent at all, but you re right I have never completely forgotten how to shoot.
I tried to change my mechanics to shoot properly and while it looked way better, it just never went in. Tried to change back to my original shot and i could never get it back. Now i completely suck at shooting when i was pretty decent for years
This is a well put together documentary
I really hope Mr. Fultz gets his shot back. That’s real shitty. He’s still a good player. I used to be able to make jump shots as a teenager. Going to basketball summer camps. However once life got in the way I stopped shooting, practicing I lost my jump shot. I tried getting it back a couple years attempting 100 3 pointers, only making 20.

Incredible video. As a philly fan that lived through this I can truly say, that was a great summary of what happened with the team

You can’t shoot like that in college and say the increased three point line mentally affect his shot. Based on his transition from college to the NBA seeing his form drastically change from smooth to horrid is due to some physical change.
Exactly. If that was the case, he wouldn’t have that same hitch in the midrange area, where he should be more comfortable from

@@terrenceGRN89 he was tweaking like a bird on the court
he's suffering from nerve damage, which is what thoracic outlet syndrome is. that's why when he's having to rely on arm strength for a shot he just doesn't have it, because the nerves sending the signals through his shoulder are being compressed and not getting through correctly. results in muscle weakness, pain and numbness.
It’s so ironic how fultz was picked over lonzo because of Lonzos odd shooting form but it was fultz that ended up with all the shooting problems mentality and physically while Lonzo completely changed his shot to become a consistent shooter
fultz is also dealing with nerve damage, as that's what thoracic outlet syndrome is. really sad problem for an athlete.

I'd guess he suffered some kind of nerve damage on his shoulder right before the workout, and his agents and staff decided not to disclose it in order to secure a paycheck. Maybe he tried to rework his shot around the injury and it messed up his muscle memory. Maybe he never fully recovered and if I had to, I'd guess he had something pretty serious and his body junst couldn't return to what it once was.
Seems like the yips
Or maybe he’s just a bum that has no confidence. Two of the worst combinations you can have as an NBA player…

It’s definitely revisionist history but whenever I see his face, he always looks nervous and stressed
When he was at the free throw line, all eyes are on him and it’s him, the basket and his thoughts. That’s the problem he had, a fear of failure
Definitely fear of failure because of trying to fulfill others expectations. I had similar problem as a HS catcher. There are more than likely some traumatic events in his past also.. Made me hate the game. I feel for this youngster as I am now in my mid 40's and can finally talk about it.

Now with the Simons issues I do think 76ers' training staffs are insanely bad

you see this in baseball a lot where players forget how to throw the ball and loose timing when to release the ball from their hand, they wind up throwing the ball wildly in the air or even straight down to the ground where their standing when it should be going to a teammate to make a play... purely mental from anxiety/stress.. these motor actions are automatic like breathing but after the first time it occurs the player can't help but think about it everytime he performs the action again. it's why Fultz can still shoot while in motion as his minds preoccupied and not obsessing about how to shoot properly
unfortunately, that's not it. he's dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome, which is compression of the nerves and blood vessels in the shoulder by the collar bone. it's basically nerve damage. it results in muscle weakness, numbness, and pain, and can degenerate to the point that you basically can't use your arm at all. that's why in shots where he's generating force from his legs he's fine as his hands and arms are just guiding the ball. when he has to generate the force from his arms/shoulders he basically can't get one arm to work correctly, which results in the screwed up shooting motion. feeling like someone is holding his arm down when he tries to raise it up is a classic symptom of this.
As a person who has had mutiple surgeries on their shoulder I can vouch and have sympathy for the difficulty and mental blocks that he has had for such a young player to go through.
yea, nerve damage is no joke. real shame that he's dealing with that.
No joke, he should talk to Charles Barkley about the “yips.” Charles got them so bad in golf, but he finally found a coach that got him to be able to swing freely again.
Yeah thats what i be thinking everytime i see it
I’m glad I saw your comments I was asking if there was something equivalent to the twistees in gymnastics.
@@92cgray I think it can happen in any sport. I remember I had a terrible throw in men’s softball one game. Then I started to overthink how I grip the ball. I threw the ball off to the left for like a month 🤣. Was like someone took my accuracy from me.
i get it when i compete in long jump, when i overthink about jumping off the board i always miss it but if i just dont get nervous im pretty good
@@harvey9508 I’m actually a track and field coach. I’ve coached state champion triple jumpers. Try focusing on making the beginning of your approach as consistent as possible. Make sure you build up to top speed the same way every time and you will hit the board more consistently.
I solved the mystery if you get drafted by the 76ers you forget how to shoot cause Simmons used to shoot good in hs lol
Simmons is beast in hs and somehow 76 steal his skill
He’s so unique. His style of play and pace is so cool to me.
Everybody blaming it on things like confidence and mental issues are crazy lmao, you think anxiety is the reason his shoulder doesn’t lift all the way up? 😂😂 Its obviously an injury that’s the only thing that makes sense.
Agreed these people trippin 😂
I heard it was a motorcycle injured that he kept away from the team so his contract wouldn't get taken back
They’re looking for something crazy to believe it’s always been a physical nerve thing but nooo these mfs need some bs to believe
Definitely not just a shoulder injury. Anyone with a shoulder problem either would not play until it healed or wouldn’t shoot the mind bendingly bizarre way he was shooting. This was mostly mental. Glad he seems to have overcome it and figured it was only a matter of time.
@@Keivz your mental can take away your ability to lift your arm? Lmao I guess I learn something new everyday
I believe in Fultz. I believe that he'll come back more determined to be better than he was before.
He was already doing great last season then he got injured again,I really wanna see this kid be a star and outshine his draft class especially Tatum
@@HellusRaizen as I Celtics fan I do too, I want to see this man be great
Its not his fultz.
@@heavyhitter5538 cold piece
He’s playing well for a bench role. Idk if he’ll ever be a starter with no 3 ability but he’s doing his role pretty damn well
Why did his midrange needed to turn to threes?
Because midrange shots lose basketball games. You might as well go try to get the MLB to bunt again.
@@mskcrc The amount of factually incorrect information that just came out of your mouth is too high sir. Please sweep it up and dispose of that. Thank you.
@@nbareactz yeah I bet you think bunting is good too because cOntExT
I watched him at Washington university his shot was smooth. He got with some trainer that changed his shot and shooting motion. Plus he did have a shoulder injury that hindered him also
You watched him where??
@@MonarchTerp The team that played North Carolina University in the NCAAs. Washington University…. Seriously, sad.
His trainer had been his trainer since highschool. No one new.
the shot got changed because of the nerve damage that he started suffering from. that's what thoracic outlet syndrome is, the compressing of the nerves and blood vessels of the shoulder, resulting in lack of muscle control, muscle weakness, numbness, and pain. it starting to show up in his life would absolutely have resulted in his shot starting to change without him doing anything, which is probably why he had those bad shoot arounds predraft.
He’s ONLY 23 years old, kid still has potential averaged 13ppg 6apg with the Magic before his ACL injury and his per 36 is 17ppg 7apg
PATIENCE IS KEY! Guards take little more time to develop than others
So what youre saying is... trust the process?
Come on were going on 5 years now! Every year it's some new problem or injury. A #1 pick only averaging 13 isn't very good either and just very mediocre. Hes too soft and at best might be a good role player in the years to come. Hes been a huge bust so far and so far there hasn't been anything hes done to prove otherwise.
Chauncey billups
It’s almost guaranteed 1 of 2 things happened, either A. He did get injured and they just missed it, happens all the time. Or B. They tried to force him to change his shot that far into his career and it basically ruined not only his shot and form but also his confidence
it's an injury, thoracic outlet syndrome is the compression of the nerves and blood vessels in the shoulder by the collar bone. he's suffering from nerve damage.
My man's low-key rapping 22:27
Even goes with the beat playing in the background!!
LOL
HAHAHA HAHA
AYO U RIGHT LMAO
I think it could be the 3P line being longer (Or at least part of it) because he shot .467 % from 16 to the 3P line last year with 10 % of his shots coming from there
As someone who went to DeMatha and played Varsity basketball at DeMatha my heart ❤️ goes out to this young man. It shall be well.
NGL I graduated from UW 2016 and went on to the corporate life and the first time I heard of him was during the draft process. He had no buzz around the city so I was always surprised he went number 1. Tatum was always the best player
Still is ✌️
